ABOUT THIS CD-ROM
The Manager's Workshop (MW) is a simulation in which you play the role of a new
manager at Omega Pharmaceutical and manage five employees who are not performing
at an acceptable level. The MW is an easy-to-use program that has a simple, "p
oint-and-click" interface.
This program does not require installation. It runs completely from the MW CD a
nd should work on any relatively recent Windows or Mac computer. To run the MW,
you need to open a file on the CD that is named "start.htm." You may open this
file either of two ways. From your Internet browser (e.g., Internet Explorer),
go to the menu bar and use File/Open to navigate to "start.htm" and double-clic
k on this file. Or, you can navigate directly to the "start.htm" file on the CD
and double-click on it to launch your browser and open the file (this method ma
y not work on some computers with older versions of Mac OS 8 or 9). Do not atte
mpt to start the MW from any other file on the CD. Doing so will corrupt the MW
session.
When you open the file "start.htm," you will have the choice of viewing an intro
ductory video or entering your office. The first time you use the MW, you shoul
d view the introduction. When you enter your office for the first time, take an
orientation tour of the company and your new job by clicking on the "OMEGA" bin
der on your bookshelf. To take action in the MW, simply point and click on labe
led items. The telephone lets you interact with any of the five employees you w
ill manage in the MW. If you need help at anytime while using the MW, click on
"MW Help" on your bookshelf.
When you open the file "start.htm," the MW will automatically conduct a technolo
gy check to make sure your computer is prepared to run the MW. Most computers w
ill pass the technology check. If your computer passes the check, you are ready
to run the MW. To run the MW, you need a recent version of an Internet browser
(e.g., Internet Explorer) and a recent version of QuickTime (to enable you to s

ee the movies in the MW). The technology check that is automatically performed w
ill let you know if you need to make any changes to your computer and will guide
you if you need to do so. If you would like to update your browser software, y
ou can get a free copy of the current version of Internet Explorer at the Micros
oft web site (http://www.microsoft.com). The MW CD includes QuickTime installer
s that were current when the MW was published. If you want a more recent (free)
version, visit http://www.apple.com/quicktime.
What to do if you have a "cookies" problem. The MW keeps track of your decision
s using cookies (small files on your computer that can record these decisions).
If you have turned cookies off (in your web browser), your decisions cannot be
tracked and the interactivity of the MW will not work for you. To fix this prob
lem, simply turn cookies "on." The method for turning cookies on depends on the
specific browser and version you are using. Cookies are usually managed by the
browser's preferences or options settings. For example, on most Internet Explo
rer versions under Windows, going to Tools/Internet Options/Privacy and specifyi
ng that "cookies" should be permitted will turn on cookies. For Internet Explor
er on a Mac with OS 9, going to File/Preferences/Cookies and specifying that "co
okies" should be accepted will turn on cookies. For Internet Explorer on a Mac
with OS X, going to Explorer/Preferences/Cookies and specifying that "cookies" s
hould be accepted will turn on cookies.
