CNE 597 HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT


Course 597 is a required course for students wishing to earn the Masters Degree in School
Counseling, Licensed Professional Counselor, and Marriage and Family Therapy tracks. It
should be taken early on in the course sequence in the first block of courses. There is no
prerequisite other than admission into the Counseling Program.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides an overview of theory and current research
concerning the growth and development of individuals over the life-span. The major intent of
the course is to relate theory and research to present concerns of those who work in the
helping professions. Theoretical Models related to the cognitive, physiological, psychological,
and social development of humans throughout the lifespan are applied to present day
situations.
PURPOSE OF THE COURSE:
The course is presented to teachers, administrators, counselors and others who are in the
helping professions. Assignments will require that those taking the class involve themselves in
child and adult study situations.
OBJECTIVES:
This course was designed to meet various objectives and competencies (course objectives,
CACREP Objectives [Counselor Accreditation for Counseling and Related Educational
Programs], SBEC Standards [State Board for Educator Certification Standards for the School
Counselor Certification - TExES] and National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education

[NCATE]. This was done to ensure that students have covered topics in this course that will
prepare them for exit and certification examinations as well as licensing requirements.
The class calendar will note how the class activity, topic, or assignments will fulfill the objective
or competency required. The following abbreviations will be used: CO= Course Objectives, CA
= CACREP objectives, SB = SBEC and NC = NCATE competencies and standards.
Course Objectives

The student will :

1. Demonstrate knowledge of the factors that affect human development. These include
biological, social, socioeconomic, moral, and multicultural aspects.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of major issues related to the development of self-concept,
self-esteem, as well issues involved in sex role expectations,
dependence/independence/interdependence aspects and changing social values.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of the implications for guidance of children and youth
throughout the school year situations.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of characteristics and applications of learning and motivational
theories.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of the family and its role in determining how children and youth
develop.
6. Demonstrate knowledge of the responsibilities of the family, school, and other
institutions of the society for the development of a life-long work ethic.
7. Demonstrate knowledge of the function of the personality throughout the lifespan.
8. Demonstrate knowledge of the later stages of the lifespan.

Bring 4 colored pens and 10 acetate transparencies with you to every class meeting.
Some assignments will be conducted on Blackboard. Please make sure you have an
account and that you know how to use the system. Please check Blackboard daily for
instructions on web-site changes, web-site links, information, etc.
If you are a student with a disability that may affect your academic performance, please
contact the professor as soon as possible or you may contact the Director of the
Counseling Center as chair of the Committee for Continuing Assistance for Disabled

Academic honesty is expected in this class. Violations will result in course failure.
Attendance. Spring & Fall attendance policy. Students are permitted to miss one
class (3 hours) with no penalty, but a call to the professor of the class is expected. A
second absence will require that the student submit a letter to the Counseling Faculty
explaining the circumstances of the absence. The faculty will decide if the second
absence should be excused. If it is not excused, a deduction of a letter grade for the
course will occur. Subsequent absences will result in automatic letter grade reductions.
Summer attendance policy is different. You will be permitted one excused absence
(one class period). Subsequent absences will result in a deduction of one letter grade
per absence.
Late assignments will be penalized by one letter grade for each 24-hour- period they are
not turned in.
Unless otherwise noted, assignments are due in hard copy on 8.5 by 11 paper.
The syllabus is subject to change pending notification.
MEANS OF EVALUATION
Evaluation # 1, 2, 3, will be multiple-choice tests and a few short essay questions. They are
worth 25 points a piece for a total of 75 points.
Participation Grade: You will be responsible for a mini-presentation every class period. The
concept will be assigned to you the previous class. Every class period you will participate in
small group and large group discussions where you will engage in a variety of activities leading
to integrating the knowledge learned. Some of those activities are: word webbing, letter
writing, concept mapping, case studies, etc. You will earn 1 point for the mini-presentation and
1 point for the small group/large group participation. You will earn 2 points total per class period
for a total of 25 or 26 points for the entire semester.
