Orientation
by Jose F.A. Santiago | 4-Maranaw &
Paolo Palanca | 6-Rizal

T he Co-Curricular Orientation was held at the covered

courts last June 14 with the Ateneo Grade School (AGS)
Middle School students, faculty and staff from 1:40-3:00pm.
The event introduced students to the many different clubs
they can join on June 21, the first day for Co-Curricular Ac-
tivities (COCA). It was hosted by three talented grade sev-
en students: Lance Calub, Itos Ladesma and Bastin Adrias.

But you may be wondering where all these activities

come from. The COCA started many years ago, since the
time of my uncle who studied in AGS in the 60’s and the
70’s. Today, in addition to the 43 regular clubs, four new
clubs were launched: Model Rocket club, Phi Epsilon Al-
pha, Drum club, and Palarong Pilipino. During the event,
members of clubs like Taekwondo, Karate Do and Muay
Thai demonstrated their martial arts skills. The students
had a blast watching these and the other presentations.

Iel Mirasol, an AGS graduate, also gave an inspiring talk

about his experiences in ISAIAS, a religious and social ac-
tion club, and explained what students do in ISAIAS. We
learned that members of this club go to public schools and
share their time, knowledge and talent with the students in
these schools. Truly, they are being young men for others.

And with that, the orientation ended. The students talk-

ed amongst themselves about the clubs they were plan-
ning to join as they exited the covered courts. Here’s look-
ing forward to fun and learning in your respective clubs!

Miting de
Avance
by Dicot C. Alvarado | 5-Edsa

S ince it’s a wonderful new

school year, everyone in Middle
School knows what that means. Yes, it’s the
time for the exhilarating event, the Miting de
Avance. In case you don’t know what this is, the
Miting de Avance is the exciting and suspense-
ful time when we elect our class officers and the
Ateneo Grade School Class Officers Movement
(AGSCOM) council who will partially lead the school.

There are 5 main officers from the AGSCOM coun-

cil: the president, the First and Second vice presi-
dents, the secretary, and the treasurer. Their job is
to make well-thoug0ht-of decisions for the inter-
est of the students and the school. They should
also be good role models to their fellow students.

Those who are nominated must have good aca-

demic and deportment grades. Once chosen, they
may form parties with interesting names or just be in-
dependent candidates. They should also prepare
campaign materials to boost their chances of win-
ning and a speech during the Miting de Avance.
Their speeches must contain their stands or what they
plan to do for the entire school. This year’s Miting de
Avance took place last July 5 in the covered courts.
Don’t forget that voting for our officers should not be
based on their popularity but on their leadership skills.

If you think being a class officer is tough, being AG-

SCOM officers is an even tougher job because their re-
sponsibility involves all students in the Middle School, not
just their classmates. This school year’s new AGSCOM
officers are: President Raul Alberto Arellano III, First Vice
President Kevin Henson, Second Vice President Francisco
Rigor Ventura, Secretary John Maverick Cuyugan, and
Treasurer Robert Andres Puno. Class officers have already
been elected for each class. Let’s hope that we voted
wisely and that our new officers all become great leaders. The Induction of Class Officers

Animax… Fun to the max:
Grade 6 Class Night
by Glenn S. Torres | 6-Tandang Sora

A nimax Fun to the Max is the title

of the grade 6 class night, which
took place last July 6. It was named by
Rod Jacob Cortex of 6-Agoncillo. The
class night is a break from school work
and an alternate world of pure fun.

After dismissal, some students swam in

the pool while others stayed in the class-
room playing board games and cards.
Others rushed to the food stalls for bar-
beque, pizza, and drinks. When the pro-
gram began, our Headmaster Fr. Fermin
and Assistant Headmaster Mrs. Amante,
together with teachers from other grade
levels joined us in the covered courts.

During the program, many of us were

really excited to present our dances
and cheers. We spent all week practic-
ing for this night. There were games for
everyone. My favorite was the Balloon
Burst. Unfortunately, my classmate burst
our balloon too soon. When the program
was about to end, Mrs. Castañeda, our
Grade Level Coordinator (GLC), gave us
some last minute reminders. After that,
we were free to bond, enjoy and have
fun with everyone in the grade level.

Bigay Puso Launch

E ach grade level that belongs to the Middle School had their separate Bigay Puso Launches
around July and August. We had our launch in the grade 4 last July 9 while both grades 3 and
7 had theirs last August 14.

For our launch, the administrators had prepared a slideshow

presentation. Our teachers also told us the values of giving and
sharing.

Now, what do we do? We give and share what we have to our

less fortunate brothers and sisters. Each peso we spare means a lot
to them so, every time you see the Bigan Puso alkansya, ask yourself,
“do I have any pesos to spare?”

Fending off bullies

W elcome back to school, fellow Ateneans! It’s time to

face another year of new lessons, teachers, friends,
and guardians. In case you’re wondering what guardians
are, they are bodyguards you’ll be needing to have
around you due to the number of bullies around campus.

Bullies have been around since the world has been

created. Even biblical characters like Mary Magdalene
were bullied! Bullies have been known to be pests. They
distract us in everything that we do, like when we are
eating during lunchtime. They suddenly slap our back
hard to get our attention. Even though bullies are not the
type of pests that go away with repellants, people still
find ways to make the world a bully-free place. Sure, a lot
of us have been bullied and just like the others, we try to
find ways to make them go away. We’ve come up with a
couple of ideas.

Violence? No, of course not. Whoever said that violence

solved anything? When we think about it, wars bring about
more destruction than salvation. Bullies are considered
nuisance in school as opposed to being revered as kings.
They’re looked down upon because the only thing they
can do is throw curse words at you and punch you. Not
much of the intellectual types, you see. Sure, maybe for
guys like us, it’s very normal to brag about our egos and
get them large enough. If you got it, flaunt it. But, we
say don’t flaunt it too much. You’ll end up too pompous.
Remember, they’re only insecure, that is why they pick on
people.

When faced with a bully, first thing that you do is to Make friends with
gather up a lot of friends. Bullies can’t really stand up for
themselves at times when they are on their own. Next, everyone, even
don’t get near the place where they usually hang out, with bullies.
as they are pretty territorial. By doing this, you stay away
from trouble. Third, if in case you encounter one, ignore
him or talk to him about his problem with you. If you talk to
him, though, you should know when to stop and restrain
yourself from getting angry and pulling a punch or any
violent act. Remember that too much of something is bad
enough. If things get really sticky, well, it’s time to tell a
teacher, a counselor or your parents. They’ll do the rest.

Remember that there are bullies almost everywhere.

They will always be around. Whether we like it or not,
we’re all going to have to learn to live with them. Think of
them as obstacles that will make you stronger and more Don’t be shy.

Lessons from COMELEC
by Kokoy Sevilla | 7-Pignatelli

H ELLO??? KOKOY??? Wala... binayaran lang naman yan...” These are few
of the phrases that my batch mates used to tease me during and after the
Ateneo Grade School Class Officers Movement (AGSCOM) elections last July.
But being appointed Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Chairman was ac-
tually one of the greatest experiences of my Ateneo Grade School (AGS) life.

A COMELEC Chairman means so many things. Not only does it mean leading
a group of people to count votes after the elections but it also means being an
example of responsibility and respect for others. As soon as I learned that I was
the one chosen for the position, I was ecstatic. I was so excited to know that I was
going to be part of a group of students who were going to lead the elections.

I was entrusted with three main tasks during my term of office and I en-
joyed all of those tasks. My first task was to be the Master of Ceremonies for
the Miting de Avance of the Middle School (MS). When I found out that I
was going to lead the ceremonies, I was pretty nervous at first but soon af-
ter, I thought of it as an opportunity to introduce myself to the MS commu-
nity as this school year’s COMELEC Chairman. During the event I did my best
to deliver my message as Chairman so that each one of them will know
“My experience as what to do during the affair. After the occasion, I thanked God because I

- Kokoy Sevilla   The third and most important task I had was to tally the votes of all the
MS students and proclaim the names of the winning candidates. After
the COMELEC members and I summed up all the votes and knew
who the winners were, I felt a certain amount of gratification in-
side because I knew that my batch mates and I did a great
job during the whole election period. When the time came
to announce the names of the winners on July 10, I read the
names of each winning candidate with pride and satis-
faction because I felt that we, in the COMELEC, worked
hard to determine the winners for the AGSCOM election.

This experience taught me two very important life les-

sons that I think each and every person can apply to his
or her daily life. These are teamwork and trust. Teamwork
– because a person cannot do everything by himself, he
will always need a helping hand every once in a while; and
trust – because a person can only help other people and
build friendships with them if he trusts them and vice versa.
This experience in my life taught me so many things and that
is why I thank God that He gave me this chance to serve my
fellow Ateneans as this year’s AGSCOM COMELEC Chairman.
