Start of class question: exercise 2C page 38 #8. A plastic crate
contains 100 boxes of pens. Each box of pens weighs 86 grams. The
total mass of crate and pens is 9200 grams. Find the mass of the
crate. Give 5 min. to solve, then show how to do it. Draw crate with
pens, and an empty crate. What do we know? Crate and pens 9200 g.
weight of pens can calculate: 100 box pens, 86 g each. 100*86=8600
(used 100 rule *). How would we find weight of just the crate? Subtract.
9200-8600=600 g.
Index notation: 2*2*2*2*2, there is a simpler way to write it: 2^5,
2=base number. 5=index/power or exponent. We say 2 to the power of 5.
Students write down example with what proper terms. (format is in my
text notes) can show factor tree (write number 63, what factors multiply
together to equal 63? 9*7=63, does anything multiply to =7? No, what
about 9? Yes, 3*3, so 3*3*7=73, or 3^2 * 7 =63.
Refer to table page 39: natural number 2 (answer), product form
(multiply form, 2), index form (2^1), spoken form (two). 4, 2*2, 2^2,
two squared. Etc.
Formative question: can you fill out the table for 3? (5 rows)

large and small things in the universe. Students can use their own

Bowling dice game. www.freeonlinedice.com Draw bowling pins

on whiteboard, number 1-9 in each circle. Using addition/subtraction///*
try to knock all pins down with one roll of two dice. Work in partners, 1
person write while other does math, take turns, can help each other.

Due today: 2B.1 #1-2ac, 3-7 odd letters (page 34). Check A and M work
from yesterday too.
Homework due next Wednesday: Exercise 2B.4odd numbers page 37,
exercise 2C all letters, Exercise 2D 1-5 (odd letters) page 39, Exercise 2E
1-6 (odd letters) page 42.
Self-Evaluation / Reflection:
The lesson went well. I continue to write titles, tell them what to write in their notes. I still need to work on writing
neatly on the board, when I run out of space I need to just erase what is there and start anew. Most understood
index notation, they still need work on two step word problems. I do not think I said ok as much as I sometimes do.
They enjoyed the activity of the numbers link to the sizes of things in the universe, it did not work on mac for them
to explore on their own, but they were able to watch the youtube video. Their homework is sometimes hard to find
in their notebook, so I have asked for them to write titles and clearly state which question you are answering, and
put a sticky on where the homework is so I can find it. I also introduced the three strike rule, if not handed in 3
times they will have detention. We will start from today, I feel that is fairer and will help keep them more
responsible.
