A Walk In The Woods _________________

A common question I hear when discussing timber harvesting

with landowners is Will the loggers clean up all the mess?

The mess left over after logging- the branches, twigs, leaves,
pieces of tree trunks, and stumps- is also commonly called slash,
or coarse woody debris.

Most of what we see as a mess actually plays an important role in

the forest. The most important items by which to determine the
success of a timber harvest are 1) clean water, 2) intact soils, and
3) a healthy, thriving stand of trees, or conditions conducive to the
regeneration of new trees. The material left over- the coarse
woody debris- basically presents an aesthetic issue, rather than an
ecological one. Conversely, this leftover material provides many

benefit of providing habitat for

a wide range of species. With
our regions past history of
large scale forest clearing for
grazing and agriculture, with
the associated soil erosion and
compaction, our forest soils
would benefit from more nutrients added back to the site
through decomposing woody
material.

All of this is not to say that logging debris everywhere is a

good thing. If its in an area
where aesthetics are very
important, or it impedes travel
along trails and other access
routes, it should be cleaned up.
Log landings, (the area where
harvested wood is processed
and loaded on trucks), usually
have the slash cleaned up, and
the area seeded and mulched.
Sometimes, however, it makes
sense to knock the slash down

low or pack it down, and leave

it in place. The slash protects
the soil from erosion, and there
is less risk of introducing seeds
from undesirable plants.
A Different Perspective

With all of the benefits of

coarse woody debris, perhaps
we should use a more positive
term to describe it. Coarse is
rough, and debris is trash,
both somewhat negative terms.
Ive heard some call it retained
organic material, which to my
mind is much more positive.
Retained means it was done
on purpose, organic means
its natural, and material is
neutral. So, rather than seeing
the leftovers of logging as a
mess, view them as natural
material left for a positive purpose.

One night in Boston, a friend

We dont need no stinkin terrorists. Police say a fearful 11year-old Georgia girl who took

she needed the knife to protect

But, wait, theres more! Theres
a relatively new plastic surgery
procedure that is on the rise
and its altogether even more
bizarre. The number of men
enquiring about scrotox, thats
having Botox injected into your

year, according to the experts
(there are experts on that?). The
operation, which can cost up to
nearly
$4,000,
helps
ease sweating, lessens the
appearance of wrinkles and
makes the scrotum appear larger by helping the muscles relax,
the Metro reports. It is already a
staple on the menu at clinics
across the US, and with the UK
around three years behind the
plastic surgery times, experts
say they expect to see a surge in
interest in the coming years.
Mark Norfolk, clinical director

Im writing to express my heartfelt thanks to all who supported

me in the Republican Primary
for State Senate District 2. I
thank my opponent for running
a spirited campaign, and ask
those who supported him to join
with me so we can win on
November 8th. Thanks also to
Sen. Forrester for her outstanding service in Concord, laying
the groundwork for us to deal
with the serious issues were
facing: businesses leaving, job
losses, stagnant wages, a deadly drug crisis, declining population, and an underprepared
workforce.

Everywhere I campaigned, you

asked what can be done to revitalize our economy. Simply put,
we must dramatically change

continue to win out over us for

Thank you for your support in the

Primary Election

On November 8th, I want to again earn your vote by

committing to ensure that that the County Attorney's
office will keep the protection of our residents foremost
in mind by vigorously prosecuting criminal offenders,
protecting and speaking for crime victims, and
supporting prevention and treatment efforts, as well
as alternative sentencing programs, as we tackle the
drug epidemic. We will continue to work in cooperation
with the local police, the county sheriff and the state
attorney general, while being fiscally prudent and
protecting the interests of all taxpayers and residents.
We have a great record of accomplishment here in
Grafton County and I look forward to building on that
strong foundation as your County Attorney.
Thank you again for your support.

put his feet in, Ahmeed slipped
in - without seeming to mind up to his calves. He smiled a
wide grin even as the chilly
water surprised him.

Ryan and I were down at our

swimming hole with some visiting students interested in
exploring aspects of placebased writing. A diverse group,
Ahmeed arrived with a particularly fresh story of his own: he
had landed in NH just three
days before, escaping the war in
Afganistan. His English was
passable, but when the students
took time for some personal
journaling, he chose to do so in

dialect of Afgani. Ahmeed and

his fellow students - from all
corners of the US and beyond,
including two students from
China - gave us fresh eyes on
our own endeavors here at the
homestead. We shared our own
history and that of homesteaders before us, our motivations,
joys, challenges, and projects,
as well as the sporadic writing
projects
in
which
we
engage...including this column!
The students were astute, asking about the transition from
normal conveniences to our
non-electric, human-powered
lifestyle; about the connotations
of home; about lessons learned
and future plans; and - most
simply and most profoundly:
why?? We asked our own questions of the students, too, seek-

WORSHIP 10:00AM
Pastor David J. Moore

Morning Worship for July & August

9:30 AM Regular Worship

11:00am

Dear Friends, Philippians 4:7 states,

And the peace of God, which
surpasses all understanding, will guard your
hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. There is
a lot going on around us and if we are not
careful we will get caught up in it, causing
much fear and anxiety. But take heart, for
Christ has conquered the world!!! He is still
sitting on the throne! His plans have not
changed, because He changes not! If you turn
to him and give him all your cares, He will
take them and exchange them for a quiet
peace that even you will be surprised about!
Get in the Word! Read it, study it, you'll be
glad you did! God bless you all.

WARRENBLACKSMITHSHOPMOVEDTONEWLOCATION

The Will Nicol Blacksmith Shop was built in 1903 by Will and his brother. The shop was on the same lot throughout the years. It did get moved
around on that lot. His grandson, Larry, has the original sign and a few ledgers his grandfather kept. The sign and ledgers will come to the
Warren Historical Society in the spring. The building was donated to the WHS by Pat and Ab Wilson. It was moved from the Wilson residence,
to its new home behind the Warren Historical Society on Thursday, September 22nd. It will become a part of the current museum. Theres much
more to do before it can be opened to the public however, and the Society will need to raise $7,000 to $8,000 more to finish the job completely. A
very large thank you to the many who have made it possible to keep a large piece of Warren history alive... Black & White photo courtesy of WHS;

USDA Designates Grafton County In NH As A Primary Natural Disaster Area__________________________

The U.S. Department of

continues.

The Caledonian-Record

All counties listed above were

designated natural disaster areas
on Sep. 15, 2016, making all
qualified farm operators in the
designated areas eligible for low
interest emergency (EM) loans
from USDAs Farm Service
Agency (FSA), provided eligibility requirements are met.
Farmers in eligible counties have
eight months from the date of the
declaration to apply for loans to
help cover part of their actual
losses. FSA will consider each
loan application on its own merits, taking into account the extent
of losses, security available and
repayment ability. FSA has a
variety of programs, in addition
to the EM loan program, to help
eligible farmers recover from
adversity.

Other FSA programs that can

provide assistance, but do not
require a disaster declaration,
include
the
Emergency
Conservation
Program;
Livestock Forage Disaster
Program; Livestock Indemnity
Program; Emergency Assistance
for Livestock, Honeybees, and
Farm-Raised Fish Program; and
the Tree Assistance Program.
Interested farmers may contact
their local USDA Service
Centers for further information
on eligibility requirements and
application procedures for these
and other programs. Additional
