2014 Convocation in Colorado Springs Evening with the FAAO's Program:

Title: "Treating Trauma Osteopathically Through the Experts Eyes"


Wednesday, March 19, 2014, 7 pm 9 pm
Background: Patients that have undergone trauma are a challenge for even the most
seasoned clinicians. A panel of experts FAAO physicians will share their insights and
recommendations for evaluating and treating patients that have experienced trauma
with an osteopathic perspective.

David Coffey, DO, FAAO
Headache, Neck Pain, Eye pain and the differential diagnosis
involving the Ophthalmic Division of Cranial Nerve V and its
response to Trauma and Eye Disease.
Present a "keep it simple" approach to treating infants and children:
o The emphasis on Condylar Decompression as the
fundamental treatment modality following trauma to the
head.
o This will follow treatment to the whole patient with BLT and
cranial osteopathy emphasizing balance to the diaphragms
o The need for balancing the autonomic nervous system
following head trauma of an infant using the sacrum and the
occiput.

A discussion on trauma resulting from disease states, such as
infection, organ injury and vascular involvement. This will support a
relevant discussion on visceral somatic patterning as well as
diagnostic and treatment approaches.
Diagnostic approach (take a global view of the body using the
acceptable body template of CCP)
Treatment approach (bring the body back to the acceptable body
template then to holographic neutral/treat strain-stretch the tissuesreposition the bones)

o Program begins with Keynote Speaker, Dr. Coffey
o Each subsequent presenter will have 8-10 minutes to share their individual
pearls on how they approach patients that have had trauma.
o This can be a short PowerPoint, discussion or demonstration [with video
support].
o Possible points to share:
Consider recommendations for a general approach to the traumatic
patient
What diagnostic features allow the osteopathic physician to
determine where the key sites of somatic dysfunction
Are there sites of somatic dysfunction that must be released prior to
treating the "key lesion?"
Is there a special case or scenario when treating the trauma patient
that exemplifies approaching the challenges in osteopathic
management?
