standards which are; Standard 2: Elements and Principles-create a composition that
demonstrates symmetrical or asymmetrical design and Standard 2: Elements &
Principles-Construct a composition using negative space.
*The students will learn about positive and negative shapes, and how to use positive and
negative shapes in a well-balanced cut-paper design.
Learning Objectives (the lessons objectives and learning outcomes for meeting curricular
and student
Line
FA2.1A.5
Identify and use contour lines
FA2.2A.5
Balance-Identify and use asymmetrical (formal balance).
*shapes-We will cover what makes a shape in the Power Point; a shape is made up of lines or
a continuous line, a shape has an inside and outside. The student will be evaluated on on the
care given to creating their shapes in the Notan design.
Exhibiting Artworks (be thoughtful) : (bulleted)
*The students will assist in creating a display of their Notan designs in the art room display
case.
*1 or 2 of the most successful Notan designs will be published in the school magazine.
Assessment Procedures : (assessments used before, during, and after the lesson) (bulleted)
Before :
*Ill will assess the students knowledge of what positive and negative shapes are based on
previous knowledge of positive and negative shapes used in their Name project.
During:
*Walk around and help students that need help with their designs. The students will
demonstrate how to cut shapes from black construction paper to create their Notan designs.
After : (please attach assessment tool to end of this lesson plan)
*The teacher will use the rubric to assess the students designs.
Lesson Structure and Procedures: The sequence of events of the lesson elements. Please
list each sequence by day or class period.
Consider: * Four Studio Structures * Eight Studio Habits of Mind * Procedures should be
linked to objectives * Materials Management
Day / Class #1
Preparation Before Class (materials management):
*6X9 black construction paper, I per student
*12X18 heavy stock white paper, 1 per student.
*glue sticks, scissors, pencils, kneaded erasers.
*Connection to Prior Learning:
Knowledge of design, and positive and negative shapes from the previous Name project.
*Engagement / Opening
*The students will watch a Powerpoint based on Notan design.
*The students will watch the teacher give a live demo on how to create a Notan design.
*The students will be responsible for cleaning up their own individual work space 10 minutes
before end of class.
*The students will put paper scraps in the recycle bin.
*The students will place all their cutouts in their individual envelopes to be collected by the
teacher.
- Collect unfinished Notan cutouts and store in the students envelopes.
-Second class, the student envelope will be passed out to the students with all their Notan
cutout pieces.
*The teacher will collect the students folder and store the folders until next class
Eliminate Class #2 if only one session is needed, repeat as many times as needed for multiple
days / classes
Day / Class #2
Preparation Before Class (materials management):
Clean-up:
*The students will place their completed Notan designs in their student folders.
Conclusion:
*The students will be told 10 minutes till the end of class.
*The students will have a completed Notan design.
*The students will have a better understanding of positive/negative, black and white
symmetrical design.
*Balance in design.
*The students are responsible for cleaning up their work spaces 5 minutes until the end of
class.
*The students will line up before exiting the class.
Resources and Supplies: (include all supplies per student; be specific as to amount and size)
(include hard copy materials such as handouts, prints, PPTs, etc.) (plan for storage)
(bulleted)
*6X9 black construction paper, 1 per student
*12X18 white heavy stock paper, 1 per student
*glue sticks, scissors, pencils & kneaded erasers, enough for the class.
*White board/ dry erase markers
Accommodations/ Modifications
*A student thats having difficulty with the concept of shapes will be assisted by the teacher.
The teacher will help the student pencil in the shape before cutting the shape out.
*The teacher will allow extra time for this student.
*A student that needs modification can create a simplified design, less detailed-simpler
shapes, but still keeping with the theme of Notan design.
Increase in Rigor:
*The Notan design can have more complex shapes, for example, cutout shapes within
shapes.
*A second Notan design can be created that with a different theme from the first.
Classroom Management: (strategies consistent with the learning needs of the lesson that
also meet student behavior needs to help keep students actively engaged) Includes: behavior
management plan, time management, transitions, and lesson/class wrap-up
Behavior Management Plan :
*The teacher will use the BIST system for a student that is acting out.
Ex; Can you stop throwing your marker/talking and not working on your project? Etc..
If the answer is anything but yes, the student will need to sit in the safe seat so that the
student can concentrate/focus on their work.
*Students can use their I Pads to listen to music streaming from YouTube with the IPad
flipped over.
*If the student is watching videos instead of working, the IPad will be taken away.
Time Management /Transitions:

*The students will cleanup and store their projects 5 minutes before the end of class.
*The students will line up and exit the class.
Lesson/Class Wrap-up (same as conclusion)
*The students will have a completed Notan design.
*The students will have a better understanding of positive/negative, black and white
symmetrical and balanced/design.
Extensions : (activities for early finishers that extend students understanding of and thinking
about the learning objectives by applying their new knowledge in a different way)(bullet,
minimum of 2)
*The student will create a bold black and white design on paper with thick and thin sharpies.
*The design will need to show an example of a bold black and white design making good use
of positive and negative shapes.
Follow-Up to Todays Lesson : (quick activity for review or building on todays learning that
will deepen student understanding and interconnect concepts; may be incorporated in next
session as connection to prior learning or throughout the unit)
*The follow up to Today's lesson will be the next art project, Surprising Sculptures, using
paper with cut outs, curl, fringe, slot and joint, fold, slit, score and bend, to create paper
sculptures as a continuation of using positive and negative shapes but in a 3-dimensional way.
