notes on Wine tasting

Its a good idea to plan to visit several wineries as every
wine-tasting experience offered is different. With so many
distinctive viticultural areas, one can easily taste many
of the worlds best varietials and winemaking styles
without learning the region. Listed below are five basic
types of tasting experiences. The experience will vary in
style from winery to winery.

Wine Bar tasting

The most common tasting experience is a Wine Bar
Tasting. You step up to the bar where typically a list of
wines being poured is displayed. Expect to pay a tasting
fee between $10-$40. Some tasting bars will offer you the
option to taste a library or reserve wine. Exercising this
option increases the fee, but will allow you to taste very
unique, old or rare wines.

Sit down tasting

A Sit Down Tasting usually requires an appointment
and there may be a slightly higher fee than a wine bar fee.
Seated in an elegant room, you are poured several wines
by your winery host. Expect your host to describe the
unique characteristics of each wine and how it was made.

table Service tasting

A Table Service Tasting, popular at sparkling wine
facilities, is a tasting experience where you are seated at a
table and the tastings are brought to you.

Walk around tasting

A Walk Around Tasting is a combination of a tour and
a tasting. Your host brings along several bottles of wine on
your tour, and may take you to a garden area of the winery

to pour the first round. Then you move to another place

within the winery to sample the next wine. This
experience continues until all the wines are tasted.

Barrel tasting
Another popular tasting experience that can be part of
a tour or a Walk Around is a Barrel Tasting. Your guide
takes a wine thief, a special siphon placed into a hole in
the top of a barrel to extract tasting samples of a maturing
wine. The sample allows you to taste what the wine is like
in the middle of developing its full potential.

Why make an appointment?

Some wineries are so small that they need to know
when you are coming so someone will be there to greet
you. Other wineries have permit restrictions that limit the
number of guests that can visit each day. Others have sitdown tastings that start and end at specific times. Its
always a good idea to schedule your appointments well in
advance of your visit because some of the more popular
wineries fill up their appointments weeks in advance.

WINEOLOGY Intelligence for The Wine Consumer

BY len naPOlitanO

How do i Conduct a Wine tasting at Home?

Wine-themed parties and dinners are a great way
to explore new wines while socializing with others
who enjoy wine as much as you do. While a sit-down,
wine tasting dinner has courses that pair with specific
wines, a casual wine tasting party does not necessarily
have to include dinner, but some food should be
available.
Decide first on a theme. You could create a Pinot
Noir tasting, for example, and assign a different Pinot
Noir appellation to each guest. In other words, one
guest has to bring a Santa Barbara Pinot Noir, another
an Oregon Pinot Noir, another from Sonoma, and so
on. Pick a vintage that is still readily available (usually
released within the last three years). Guests can choose
any producer and price level they want, but its a good
idea to establish a price range. Or, you could provide
all the wines yourself. In either case, be sure there will
be enough wine for everyone to taste 1 to 3 ounces of
each wine.
Once deciding on a theme, plan for having food
that pairs with the wines. You can keep things simple
with just bread, crackers, and a variety of cheeses and
cold meats. Or, be daring and experiment with a range
of small dishes, hot and cold, allowing guests to seek
out perfect pairings. If you choose a theme that results
in a broad selection of winesfor instance, white and
red wines from Paso Robles, vintage 2010youre
bound to find a few great pairings among all the
possible combinations.
Bottles should be placed in full view on a main
table for guests to pour for themselves. Hand everyone
a glass and remind them to take small samples so that
the wines get distributed as evenly as possible.

For past Wineology columns, scan the QR code
with your smart phone application or go to
www.WineCountry thisWeek.com

and search Wineology.

www.WineCountryThisWeek.com

Alternatively, you can get pouring control tops for

wine bottles that limit the volume of each pour.
Another approach is a blind wine tasting where
guests dont know what they are tasting because
bottles are wrapped in paper bags or foil and labels are
covered. Each guest arrives with their pre-assigned
bottle already inside a bag that hides everything but
access to the cork. Assign guests a number and have
them write it on the outside of the bag, easy for people
to see.
Once all wrapped wines are numbered and
arranged on the table, give guests only one hint about
the wines: red wines are in one area, white wines in the
other. Thats all they should know. The varietal, brand,
style or appellation of each wine should remain
unknown to everyone, except, of course, to the person
who brought it.
Allow a couple of hours for everyone to taste all the
wines, pair them with food, and rate each one from
one to ten on a personal scorecard that you create and
hand out in advance. Then take everyones scores
(make sure each card has the guests name), total them
for each wine, and announce the top scoring wines of
the night. Return each persons card so each guest can
compare the score he or she gave with the scores of the
best wines of the party. You can create categories for
best white wine, best red wine, even worst wine. The
most exciting moment comes next, when you remove
the bags and reveal the labels.

Wine Country doesnt get more real than Sonoma Valley, whose rich
soils mark the birthplace of Californias wine industry. Its also the
closest wine region to San Francisco, just 45 miles north of the
Golden Gate Bridge. Cradled between the Mayacamas and the
Sonoma Mountain ranges, Sonoma Valley encompasses a rolling
patchwork of vineyards, quaint farms and 13,000 acres of scenic
parkland. In the center of town, the eight-acre Sonoma Plaza is a
National Historic Landmark, strewn with sprawling shade trees and
bordered by carefully preserved adobe buildings. Up the road in Glen
Ellen, author and bohemian adventurer Jack London lived and wrote
at his pristine Beauty Ranch, now an 800-acre state historic park.
The historic Sonoma Plaza lies at the heart of Sonoma Valley
gateway region to Sonoma County. Sonoma Plazas done it all
Mexican military outpost, eeting frontier republic, Spanish
Mission village. Now a gorgeous historic landmark and slow
culture capitol, Sonoma Plaza radiates romance around every
corner, cafe and cobblestone. Whether youre here for an
overnight or extended stay, Sonoma Plaza oers the pictureperfect start (and end) to your adventures. Its a pedestrian
paradise, so ditch the car keys and discover Real Wine Country on
foot or bicycle. The Plazas old adobe storefronts, meandering
alleyways, sunlit courtyards and historic landmarks hum with an
eclectic mix of restaurants, hotels, tasting rooms, cafes, artisan
boutiques, galleries even a vintage movie house. As for the
nature lover, wildower hikes and stunning hilltop vistas abound
within just a short distance. Anchoring it all is the tranquil Plaza
itself, whose vast green stretches of lawn and immense tree
canopy create a lush setting for picnics, cultural activities and
weekly farmers markets.

Jacuzzi Family Vineyards | the Olive Press

he sun is shining on an endless sea of vineyards. Youre

sipping a luscious glass of Sangiovese and dipping fresh
bread in a bowl of rich, buttery olive oil. A scene from a villa in
Tuscany? No, just another perfect afternoon at Jacuzzi Family
Vineyards in Sonoma.
The Jacuzzi family first emigrated from Italy in the early
1900s to work on the railroad. Eventually, the Jacuzzi brothers
would venture into the aviation business, the spa business and
to the delight of visitors to the Sonoma Valley, the wine
business.
The vineyards lie primarily in the Carneros wine region that
stretches between Napa and Sonoma. Here, the winery sits on
one hundred and ninety acres of lush, fertile land that boasts
rolling green hills and the historic flatlands of the San Pablo Bay.
Concentrating on Italian wines, Jacuzzi Family Vineyards
produces Barbera, Montepulciano, Moscato, Dolcetto, Aleatico,
Aglianico, and Primitivo. There is no need for a passport to be
transported to the wine regions of Italy, just a short drive to
Sonoma will provide all the charm, scenery and magnificent
wines of the country without the time and expense of overseas
travel.
No visit to the Jacuzzi Family Vineyards is complete without
a stop by The Olive Press Olive Oil Tasting Room and Gift Shop.
Dedicated to anything and everything having to do with olives
and olive oil, the shop offers samples of the Jacuzzi Family
Vineyards award-winning olive oil that was inspired by the rich

eynaldo Robledos journeyfrom Michoacan,

Mexico in 1968 to the Napa Valley, to eventually
opening the Robledo Family Winery in 2003 in
Sonomais a testament to the dream that through
passion, hard work and dedication, good things will
come. The first winery established by a former
Mexican migrant worker, the Robledo Family Winery
sells most of their fruit to other wineries, but
produces an impressive portfolio of premium wines
under their own label along with a limitedproduction extra virgin olive oil made from local
Tuscan olive varieties.
During the early years, the family purchased
fourteen vineyards, totaling approximately 350 acres,
in Sonoma, Napa and Lake counties. The family feels
their years of careful attention to soil conditions,
expert viticultural practices and following the natural
cycles of Mother Nature are evident in each bottle of
wine they produce. Everardo Robledoson,
Winemaker and CEOcredits his winemaking skills
to working alongside his father in the vineyards from
a young age, and believes outstanding wine comes

ith so many wineries to visit in the beautiful wine country,

its easy to miss the hidden gems. There is one off the
beaten path that is worth finding: The Larson Family Winery is
located at the intersection of Highway 121 and Broadway, across
from the Schell-Vista Fire Station. Driving through, you will pass
rows of Chardonnay vines taking in the warm California sun.
Nearby, a redwood barn draws you in to experience Larsons
down-to-earth, fun-loving, hard-working, dog-loving, country
lifestyle.
The 101-acre ranch has been in the family since 1899. As

bar, hangs a hand-painted mural, chronicling the history of the
family and the heritage of the property. This colorful painting
takes you back to the days of the Wild West from steamboats,
rodeos, racehorses and polo ponies to the current winery
surrounded by lush green vineyards.
With roots in the western region of the Carneros appellation,
and 70 acres of vineyard to work with, Larson Family Winery
produces more than 10 different varietals. Their most popular
wine is their Three Lab Cab named after their wonderful labs,
Buster, Bubba and Pete; the inspiration for this Cabernet blend.
Larson Family Winerys award-winning wines include Millerick
Road Zinfandel, Millerick Road Meritage, Larson Family
Chardonnay, Larson Family Pinot Noir and Larson Family
Cabernet Sauvignon. These magnificent wines and more are
available only at the winery, online or through their wine club.

Visitors seeking an over-the-top ultra-luxury wine country experience would best steer clear of idyllic, slow Sonoma Valley. Sure, doublewide tractors grace
the two-lane Highway 12, wide-open ranchlands blanket the valley between towns, and wooly sheep keep weeds and grasses minimal in the vineyards. But
no doubt you will also find countless award-winning wineries and world-class restaurants throughout all of Sonoma. Living in Sonoma Valley is all about life,
about taste and enjoying each day. Sonomans are very proud of their heritage and their town. Excellence is what they do its just done in blue jeans.

ome spend the day in the beautiful town of Sonoma and sample
some of the finest Pinot Noir at Fulcrums tasting room. Located
just off the historic Sonoma Plaza, Fulcrum welcomes you to their
new location with an impressive portfolio of award-winning wines.
Fulcrums gathering place is friendly and provides a chic and relaxed
atmosphere, filled with original art works that colorfully tell the
inspiration behind the Fulcrum name.
Here, founder/winemaker David Rossi and staff offer a unique
wine tasting experience of their small-lot production wines which
includes an educational tour through the five distinct vineyard
regions of California: Chalone, Anderson Valley, Russian River Valley,
Sonoma Coast and Lake County.
When David is not in the winery, he is working hard in the
vineyards. With twenty years of winemaking experience, he knows
the importance of applying precise vineyard techniques to a very
small batch of hand-selected grapes. Rossis first vintage, under the
Fulcrum label, made its debut in 2006 and has been going strong ever
since. For Rossi, Its all about balance, (hence the Fulcrum name)
that comes from California fruit and its rich soil. His steadfast
approach is to carefully usher the vineyard into every bottle.
At Fulcrum Wines, you will find the tasting experience intimate
and lacking in pretention. You will learn about the grapes origins and
how they distinctly express themselves in areas of Sonoma and fertile
regions of California. Their tasting menu offers 5 tastes for $25.00
and includes a variety of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Petite Sirah.

Sonoma-loeb Wines
Sonoma-Loeb is new to Vine Alley, which features tasting rooms
located up and down the quaint courtyard row on Sonoma Plaza.
For those wanting to spend a little time strolling the beautiful
European-styled alley, with its Italian water fountain at the back,
Sonoma-Loeb is the place to sample exceptional limited-production
Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from the finest Sonoma County
vineyards.
Sonoma-Loeb has been making wines for more than twenty-five
years. Its story began when John Loeb Jr., United States Ambassador
to Denmark, set out to make wines that balanced the nuance and
sophistication of the Old World with the vibrant character of great
California winemaking. To achieve this vision, Ambassador Loeb
sought out renowned Winemaker Phillip Titus, who has been the
winerys winemaker since the very first vintage.
Over the years, Titus and Vineyard Manager Dave Pirio have
formed longstanding relationships with select Sonoma County
growers highly respected for producing outstanding grapes for the
highest quality wines.
Today, Sonoma-Loeb is owned by the Chappellet family, who
have continued to ensure that the winerys portfolio reflects
Sonoma Countys natural diversity, with vineyards that feature a
variety of elevations, soils, slopes and exposures. As a result,
Sonoma-Loebs wines are sourced from some of the most renowned
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards in Sonoma County,
including the famed Dutton Ranch, a sustainably farmed vineyard
in the Russian River AVA, and the equally esteemed Sangiacomo
Family Vineyard in the Carneros AVA.

della Santinas
l

ocated off the historic square, Della Santinas is a family-owned

.and operated restaurant that has stood the test of time to
become a Sonoma institution. The Della Santina family name
shares a long lineage and history in the Tuscan town of Lucca,
Italy. My father Quirico Salvatore Giovanni Della Santina
migrated from Lucca in 1960.
Residing in the North Beach area of San Francisco, Quirico
became a baker by trade. Later, he was lured to Marin County by
his uncle Adolph to work in the family restaurant: Marin Joes.
After 25 years of successful ownership in a thriving business, he
decided to go out on his own in beautiful Sonoma Valley. Since
1990, we have continued to bring Tuscan country cooking to the
wine country using recipes passed down from my grandmothers
Pia Fontana Della Santina and Clary Gambogi Barsotti.
In 2008, we opened Enoteca Della Santina, a wine bar and
retail wine shop specializing in wines from all over the world.
Enoteca, translated literally in Italian, means wine library a
place for people to enjoy a glass in an Old World ambiance. We
have created a showcase for international as well as local, small
producers.
Our wine club has circumvented the globe looking for value
selections that expand our members palates and knowledge. Day
to day, the bar is a gathering spot for locals and tourists looking
to experience a taste of Sonoma Wine Country living.

laurel Glen Vineyard

l

aurel Glen Vineyard is a beautiful mountain vineyard

.that is well known for producing highly rated Cabernet
Sauvignon wines in the past under the direction of founder
Patrick Campbell. Patrick focused efforts on developing
and producing wines in Lodi and South America and
eventually decided to sell the vineyard. In 2011, Bettina
Sichel, a veteran of the California wine industry, became
the steward of Laurel Glen Vineyard after teaming up with
a group of wine lovers to purchase the iconic estate. She
brings over 20 years of working with the finest producers
of Cabernet Sauvignon and believes that with improved
organic farming, more careful handling of the fruit and
gentler fermentation techniques, the new wines are already
noticeably more exciting.
One key upgrade was the addition of the Laurel Glen
Vineyard Tasting Room which is open daily. Guests are
offered two different seated tasting options. For $20, guests
can taste current release wines. This fee is waived for
members of the wine club. For $50, reserve a Library Wine
& Chocolate Tasting and experience four vintages of the
flagship Laurel Glen Vineyard Estate Cabernet Sauvignon,
spanning at least 10 years of production. Both tasting
experiences offer insight into the rich history of Laurel
Glen as well as their future plans. Bettina, along with her
knowledgeable winemakers and team, are on a mission to
restore the stylistic elegance with a balance of acidity and
fruit ripeness, finesse and ageability to their estate Cabernet
Sauvignon.

New to the tasting room scene, Manzanita Creek is
anything but a novice at winemaking. Known for its
single-vineyard Zinfandels cultivated from local
vineyards and crafted into award-winning vintages at its
Healdsburg winery, Manzanita Creek stands by its credo:
Never Boring Wines!
The winery, which has produced 15 harvests, set up
its first tasting room in 2015 in Kenwood Village along
Highway 12. There, it offers a tasting menu, with pours
from its two labels: Manzanita Creek and Lex Julia,
French Bordeaux varietals.
Though the menu changes almost daily, it will
certainly incorporate at least one of Manzanita Creeks
six Zinfandels, possibly including the winerys Carreras
Ranch old vine Zinfandel, sourced from a vineyard
planted in 1905 in Dry Creek Valley.
Manzanita Creek owners Jack and William Salerno
are brothers who wanted their wine to speak for itself.
They have created a boutique winery to showcase wines
that please themselves, that are authentic to their vision
of precision, perseverance and taking risks.
They produce just 5,000 cases a year, all of which are

Petaluma

Some may consider Petaluma new to wine growing. Its history is better remembered as being the Egg Basket of the World. But Petalumas tradition of
growing grapes goes back 150 years. Over time, chicken ranches turned to dairy ranches. In recent years, Petalumas potential for producing premium
Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah has boosted the vineyard acreage and sparked a movement for a new appellation, Petaluma Gap.
The wind and the fog are the Petaluma Gaps trademark. The Gap is actually a wind gap named after a coastal mountain opening that stretches east from
the Pacific through the town of Petaluma and then roars south to San Pablo Bay.

Creating single-vineyard, single-vintage, small-lot port wine,
Sonoma Portworks is tapping into a growing niche that agrees

Sonoma Portworks, in operation for more than 20 years, is
the only port specialist in Sonoma County. Bill Readings
approach to winemaking is creative and experimental. He takes
this challenge seriously, cultivating fine ports from a single,

Tucked away on Second Street south of downtown Petaluma,
Sonoma Portworks is a quick jaunt off Highway 101. Many
visitors wander in from that road. Others are pulled in by signs

port tasters and port aficionados to take a spin through the
winerys portfolio. Beyond the several ports available to taste,
Sonoma Portworks also makes grappa, a spirit distilled from
port-laden pomace leftover from the port-making process.
Visitors can also try Portworks Sonomic Almost Vinegar, which
is like a balsamic, but more versatile.

Handcrafted Award-Winning
California Cheese Since 1865

Marin French Cheese Company

uilding on a history that spans over 150 years, Marin French

Cheese Company (or The Cheese Factory as they are known
to locals) enjoys the distinction of being the longest continuallyoperating cheese company in America. Cool breezes from the
Pacific Ocean only ten miles away from the historic ranch in Hicks
Valley cascade over the rural landproviding exceptional grazing
pastures for the Jersey, Holstein, and Guernsey cows, yielding the
highest quality hormone-free milk for their cheesemaking.
All cheeses are handcrafted in 20-gallon buckets today, just as
they were back in 1865. Using only fresh milk which arrives daily
from neighboring dairies within 20 miles from the creamery,
their commitment to naturally-made cheeses without
preservatives and additives is a hallmark of Marin French.
Their signature cheese, Petite Breakfast, was created in the
early 1900s due to a poultry disease epidemic, which in turn,
created a shortage of eggs. Jefferson A. Thomson, the founder of
the creamery, sold his fresh, un-ripened Brie to saloons where it
was welcomed by the dockworkers as an alternate source of
protein and as a substitute for pickled eggs. The Petite Breakfast
(as its now called today) continues to be the creamerys most
popular cheese.
Visitors to the creamerys cheese shop will experience free
cheese tastings daily. Theres even a charming deli-caf on-site
with a large variety of cold and hot sandwiches, drinks, artisan
food products and a variety of picnic foods that can be enjoyed
with the entire family. Spread out a picnic blanket on the historic
property either overlooking the picturesque pond, or nestled in

Santa Rosa

Downtown is the heart of Santa Rosa where entertainment, shopping, wine tasting and restaurants keep visitors itineraries full.
Tasting opportunities in downtown Santa Rosa include a new urban winery village called Vintners Square that is home to several small, boutique
but full-production wineries with tasting rooms including DArgenzio Winery. Nearby, the historic Railroad Square has an authentic old town ambiance
and is a favorite place to pass time, socialize and savor the wine country experience with antique shops, fine dining, local arts/entertainment and, of course,
wine tasting. For more information on vacationing in Santa Rosa, go to www.visitsantarosa.com.

Chateau ador
C

hateau Ador is conveniently located just north of

Santa Rosa on Old Redwood Highway, down the road from Willis
Wine Bar in my humble opinion, one of the best restaurants in
Sonoma County and is easily accessible from Highway 101.
When you pull up to the winery, your first impression is of lots of
white latticework at the gate. The white lattice theme is continued
with a large white trellis-like structure, which shades the picnic area.
A goodly handful of black wrought iron picnic tables and chairs are
scattered about under the trellis, creating a relaxing, welcoming
ambience. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic, grab a bottle or
six of wine and relax and stay a while.
Once inside the winery and tasting room is where visitors may see
(and taste) what makes Chateau Ador different from other local
wineries. A long, granite-topped tasting bar spans the back of the
room. A variety of wines and medals from various wine competitions
are proudly displayed around the room. The overall atmosphere is
bright, cheerful and colorful.
Lets talk about the wines. The 2014 Chateau Ador Chardonnay is
varietally correct, with abundant aromas and flavors of baked apple,
citrus and buttered toast, all wrapped up in a juicy, richly textured
mouthfeel. The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon has received a Gold Medals
in each of three wine competitions. At the 2014 Sonoma County
Harvest Fair, Chateau Ador 2014 Pinot Noir and 2014 Chardonnay
Estate Reserve each received a Gold Medal. Gold Medals were also
garnered for their 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2009 Merlot at the
2014 China Wine Spirits Awards (CWSA). In
2013, Chateau Ador 2010 Sonoma County Chardonnay, 2009
Sonoma County Pinot Noir and 2009 Sonoma County Merlot each

Moondance Cellars
l

ocated in the verdant, rolling hills of rural Sebastopol, just off Highway 116
south, Moondance.Cellars is an experience not to be missed. The wines are
excellent and fairly priced, the people, dog and horses are friendly and
welcoming and theres not an ounce of pretension to be found anywhere on
the property. You will come a visitor and leave as a friend. I certainly did.
The whole atmosphere at Moondance Cellars is one of warm,
unpretentious fun. Owners, David and Priscilla Cohen invite visitors to share
in our love of life, and when you visit, you certainly will. Mike, a feisty little
terrier pup and Greeter Extraordinaire will welcome you with all four open
arms, as will the three horses (two quarter horses and one adorable and
talkative mini-horse).
The winery/tasting room, once a pig barn, now well cleaned, is the most
friendly and rustic tasting room I've ever stepped foot in and Ive stepped foot
in more than a few in my long, wine-drenched career. There are cases of wine
stacked along the walls, the bar is two wine barrels, topped with a thick plank
of wood and the whole room has a crazy tilt to it. I loved it. I loved the wines,
too.
Moondance Cellars has a sister brand called Orchard Station (mostly
white wines) and the wines are equally stylish and tasty. Both brands are
available for tasting and purchase in the tasting room and on the website.
Every wine I tasted was excellent, but I only have room to write about a
couple, so Ill write about my favorites:
2015 Sauvignon Blanc, Russian River Valley ($30): This tasty, super aromatic
wine is almost too easy to drink! Aromas and flavors of grapefruit, freshly cut
grass and savory green herbs abound, all wrapped up in a zippy, fresh
mouthfeel. Long, juicy finish.
2013 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley $46: Mouthwatering aromas of cherry,
vanilla, rose petals and spice lead into a silky, sexy mouthful of consistent
flavors, which linger through the long, delicious finish. Mmmm.

Korbel Champagne Cellars

F

or over 130 years, Korbel has been bottling some of the

finest California champagnes from its facility located along
the scenic Russian River Valley. A favorite daytrip destination
for visitors near and far, Korbel is ripe with history, intrigue
and, of course, sparkling wine.
Located just 20 minutes from the rugged Sonoma Coast
and only a five minute drive to the ancient Armstrong
Redwoods State Natural Reserve, Korbel is situated along one
of Northern Californias most travelled and storied scenic
river roads.
Korbel has held fast to the time-honored French
tradition methode champenoise in which the
champagne is fermented in the very bottle from which it is
served. Learn more about this fascinating process by
stopping by the winery for a complimentary tasting and
tour.
Besides sparkling wine, Korbel also produces still wines
found only at the winery or through the Korbel Wine Club,
as well as 4 varieties of California brandy, including newly
released Korbel 12 a California brandy aged for more
than 12 years.
A free 50-minute historic walking tour departs daily
11 a.m. to 3 p.m., from the Korbel Railroad Station, built
in 1876. Each docent-led tour takes visitors through the
antique wine cellar, including a stop in the estate museum to
see artifacts from the winerys inception. Dont miss the short
film on the history of Korbel.

Moshin Vineyards
t

he winery estate on Westside Road in Healdsburg is located in

the heart of Russian River Valley; a premiere growing region
known for producing exceptional Pinot Noir. This is good news
for Moshin Vineyards winemaker and owner Rick Moshin, who
has turned a labor of love into a thriving and welcoming business.
Moshin, a former math professor at San Jose State University
who loves Pinot, began tinkering with wine in his basement.
Opportunity knocked, and he bought the property on Westside
Road, which became his winemakers dream-come-true and fulltime passion. The tasting room opened in 2005.
Moshin specializes in Pinot Noir, known as a finicky grape that
needs to be handled tenderly, but can produce stellar and versatile
results. The winery produces no less than 12 unique Pinot Noirs a
year.
Enthusiastic pourers and other staff will guide visitors through
a tasting of five wines from the rotating menu, highlighting Pinot
Noir and several other small-lot varietals..
Moshin prides itself on its friendly atmosphere, perfect for
first-timers, or those who want to develop their palates in an
educational, nonjudgmental and relaxing setting.
Those interested in the production process can schedule a
guided tour to witness the winemaking process in Moshins fourtier, gravity-flow system. The structural design of the production
system, from crush pad to bottling line, ensures the grapes are
handled delicately and spur-of-the-moment needs are met.

Hook & ladder Winery

l

ocated in the heart of the Russian River Valley, Olivet

Road has been home to the De Loach family for 35 years.
Cecil De Loach was a firefighter in San Francisco for 16 years
and in 1970, he and his wife Christine bought their first 24acre vineyard in Sonoma County and started second careers
as winegrowers. Five years later they made their first wine
and they went on to build one of the countrys most
successful, popular and iconic wine brands.
In 2003, with the De Loach Vineyards brand one of the
biggest in the country, the De Loach family decided to start
over. They sold their eponymous winery and concentrated
on Hook & Ladder, which theyd started 20 years earlier with
a Port. In 2004, they opened Hook & Ladder on Olivet Road
on the first property the family purchased, next to the
historic Barbieri Ranch.
Cecil retired from firefighting in 1982, but there are lots
of firefighter themes at Hook & Ladder, including fire
department patches and t-shirts from visiting firefighters
decorating the tasting room. Now, three generations of the
De Loach family keep Hook & Ladder to just 35,000-case
annually.
As part of their philosophy of keeping it simple to help
keep prices down, the informal and friendly tasting room
occupies a part of the winery itself. As to the wine? Medals,
loyal followers and enthusiastic newcomers to the wines are
further proof that the De Loaches are still making great wine
after all these years.

fun, intimate excursion through select vineyards of the
Alexander Valley in Sonoma County. Owner and wellinformed tour guide Bret LeRolland, is coachman of a

tastings at the stellar Hanna and Soda Rock wineries.
Along the way, our guests relax and socialize, while
enjoying spectacular vistas and interesting historical
landmarks.

Armida has been around for more than 20 years, launched by

Bruce is the maitred of sorts, a jack-of-all-trades, who will be spotted

Armida may best be known for its playful, unconventional labels,

alluring aromas of cantaloupe and meyer lemon.
While they like to have fun, all of the Armida employees also take
their business very seriously, producing fabulous wines from some of
Sonomas best vineyards. Many of the wines come from a single
vineyard such as the Maple Vineyards Zinfandel, a famous old-vine
vineyard on the east side of Dry Creek Valley. Armida is also proud of
its 2012 Il Campo Estate Field Red, sourced from its estate ranch at
the winery in the western hills of Healdsburg.
Most of Armidas wines are only available at the winery, so dont
hesitate to take a picnic up to the winery, where you can enjoy the view
on the oak-shaded deck and indulge in a great bottle of wine, making
new friends on the bocce court. If youre lucky youll get to share a

dutcher Crossing Winery

O

riginally the shared dream of a father and daughter, Dutcher

Crossing Winery in Sonoma Countys Dry Creek Valley has
come to represent a family-first approach to wine and
hospitality. Debra and her father searched for many years to find
the perfect location to realize their passion. Together they
explored many of the worlds premier wine regions, deciding on
Dry Creek Valley. Unfortunately, Debras father lost his battle
with melanoma only three months before Debra acquired
Dutcher Crossing. The last Christmas gift he gave her before he
passed away was the vintage penny-farthing bicycle that has
come to represent their journey together and her journey
forward in the wine industry.
As soon as Debra laid eyes on the Dutcher Crossing estate,
she knew she was home. The quaint charm of the winery evokes
the look of the farming community that flourished in Dry
Creek in the early 1900s. As visitors enter the winery, the wide
breezeway frames a panoramic view of the valleys lush hillsides.
Guests are treated like part of the winery family as they sample a
selection of Dutcher Crossings award-winning wines in the
tasting room or outside under the pergola.
Debra has formed a close relationship with her winemakers
Kerry Damskey and Nick Briggs. They share a common vision
that great wine is handcrafted in a way that is true to the
vineyard, vintage, and varietal. Over the years this vision has
allowed them to develop close bonds with some of the best
grape growers in the area. This artisanal small-lot approach to
winemaking has made Dutcher Crossing wines some of the
most highly praised wines in Sonoma County.

trattore Farms: Wine and Olive Oil

new tasting room, Winery and Olive Mill

rattore Farms recently moved to their estate vineyard after many

years of construction.
The tasting room leads to an outdoor patio with expansive views
of the premier winegrowing region of Dry Creek Valley, synonymous
with Zinfandel. There, owner Tim Bucher sustainably farms 15 acres
of vineyards to produce small-lot vintages of Rhne varietals such as
Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier.
With 10 acres of olive orchards ranging from one to 180 years old,
oil is produced on-site with both Italian stone and hammer mills.
The tasting room is the scenic backdrop for casual or intimate
gatherings. A wood-fired pizza oven, barbecue and culinary kitchen
provide capabilities for gourmet wine, olive oil and food pairings.
Buchers ties to the music industry, as chairman of the GRAMMY
Foundation, bring well-known acts such as The Band Perry. The
Foundation helps support music programs in public schools,
something near and dear to Tim. Trattore also hosts Farm Aid House
Concerts in support of family farms with John Mellencamp performing
in 2015 and Grace Potter who performed at the winery in spring of
2016.
Protecting the environment is high on Buchers priority list.
Trattore, which means tractor in Italian, runs on solar power, and all
irrigation uses recycled water. Coming from a family of Swiss
immigrant farmers, Bucher understands the need to protect the land
for future generations. He uses his background in technology and
engineering to make sure his operations are efficient and
sustainable. But that technology is all behind the scenes. Visitors to
Trattore will feel welcomed like family, invited to take a relaxing
break with a fine glass of wine and a breathtaking view of the
surrounding Dry Creek Valley.

truett Hurst Winery

S

et in the heart of Dry Creek Valley is a special estate

called Truett Hurst. As you drive in, the sheep and goat
pasture is the first indication that this is not in any way your
average winery. Vineyards are flanked by habitat islands for
birds and beneficial insects, and there are bluebird and owl
boxes. Maintaining biodiversity and habitat are part of the
farming philosophy here. Our commitment to responsible
stewardship of this property is matched by the passion with
which we handcraft award-winning Zinfandel, Petite Sirah,
Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel
Ros.
The wines are made by fermenting grapes in small,
open-top stainless steel fermenters. The grapes are punched
down during fermentation, rather than pumped over,
allowing for gentle extraction of color and flavor
components, while avoiding bitter tannins. Then wines are
barrel aged in approximately 30% new French oak, until the
flavors and structure of the wine perfectly balance. The
result: big, bold, textured wines with lots of spice and
jammy fruit.
You can savor these wines in one of the most
comfortable and relaxing wineries in the valley. You have a
choice of Adirondack chairs down by the creek where you
may see Steelhead or Coho salmon. Or hang out on the
patio and listen to music while enjoying the sublime
scenery of Dry Creek, or enjoy a picnic or a slow lunch in
the olive grove. If this is not enough, youll always be served
by the friendly hosts who will make you feel right at home
in this inviting tasting room.
