eading activity (reading for comprehension)

LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE
OBJECTIVES: BY THE END OF THE ACTIVITY Ss WILL BE ABLE TO - use their knowledge of the
English language to complete the text of the poem
-use the new vocabulary in new contexts
TIME: 15'
Lead in: T informs Ss that they will receive a poem written by E. Dickinson, but in a cloze-type
exercise.
Initiate: T gives Ss the poem with a blank instead of some words that they will have to guess.
I HIDE myself within my 1................,

You, unsuspecting, wear me too
And 3.............. know the rest.

That, fading from your 5.................,

Run the activity: T asks Ss to try to guess the missing words however crazy their guesses are. Ss
make guesses and in order to help them, T starts by giving them some clues. First, T gives the first
letter of each word, then the second one until Ss guess all the words.
1. f...., 2. b....3a....4 m....5 v....6f.....7 l......
Feedback: T asks Ss to use the words in sentences of their own.
Follow up: T asks Ss to write a short story using words from the poem.

pre-Speaking activity-Tess..
Level: UPPER INTERMEDIATE
Lead in: T gives Ss a fragment from Tess and the part from the movie that matches the fragment and
informs them that they are going to focus on the differences between the fragment and the movie.
(the scene when she is found at Stonehenge)
Initiate: T asks Ss to pay attention to details both in the fragment and the movie.
Run the activity: T asks Ss to read the fragment and then they watch the scene of the movie
together.
Feedback: T asks Ss to give their first impresions related to the readind of the fragment and the
watching of the scene.
Follow up: T asks Ss to make a scheme for the speaking activity to come.

Pre-writing
Lead in: tell ss that they will study a midsummer night' s dream by w.s.
Initiate: t asks ss to take a piece of blank paper and start writing about the topic :ideas, words when t
says "start". They should not put their pencils down at all, not stop writing, not worry about spelling,
grammar.
Run the act: ss perform the task. T monitors and encourages the ss.
Feeback: at the end of the act, ss will have a page of writing. A lot of it will be rubbish, but there will
also be good ideas. Give the ss time to read what they have written and make correctation .
Follow up: t asks ss to read the fragment from " a midsummer.." and give points to their ideas.
Level: upper-intermediate

post-speaking activity
Lead in: T informs Ss that they are going to reconsider the scene from Stonhenge and give it another
end.
Initiate: T gives each S a sheet of paper in order the Ss to recreate the scene.Ss will have two
possibilities: one, to write and then read about their scene; two: to draw and speak about their
scene.
Run the activity: T asks Ss to recreate the scene and helps them, if necessary.
Feedback: T asks Ss to name the best recreation and asks the recreator to motivate his/her choice
of the events.
Follow up: T asks Ss to write 15 lines about Hardy's choice of Stonehenge in his novel.

speaking activity
Lead in: T informs Ss that they are going to speak about the differences and the similarities between
the fragment and the scene from the movie.
Initiate: T gives Ss a number of stages to follow in order to make a comparison between the book
and the movie.( setting, actions, characters, description etc)
Run the activity: T forms pairs. Each pair will have to give 2 similarities and 2 differences they have
noticed between the fragment and the scene from the movie. The other Ss participate as in a sort of
debate.
Feedback: T asks Ss to give pros and cons related to the book and the movie.
Follow up: T asks Ss to focus on Stonehenge in order to describe it in the next activity.

post-writing
lead in: T asks Ss to prepare their letters because they will read them aloud.
initiate: T organizes the class as for a debate. Ss prepare their texts.
run the activity: Ss read the letters and after each letter, the colleagues, together with the T discuss
on the letters(grammar mistakes, pay attention to the words they used, add some new ideas)
feedback: T asks Ss to give impressions about the activity.
follow-up: T asks Ss to write 10 lines about what he/she found wrong/right in a colleague's letter( to
be a critique)
