Green Bay wide receiver Trevor Davis was starting to be utilized more in the Packers offense in Week 3 and could be asked to fill in during a long stretch of football following the early
bye week.

Packers face daunting 13-week stretch

Maintaining execution key to winning record
By Chris Caporale
sports@wolfrivermedia.com

Nearly two full weeks removed from an offensive outburst against the Detroit Lions,
the Green Bay Packers are
getting ready to head into a 13week stretch of football without
a break.
The stretch includes three
games over 12 days starting on

Sunday against the Giants at

Lambeau Field.
I think that preparation
comes in the offseason and training camp, tight end Richard Rodgers said. Thats when you get
ready for the long stretch, take
care of yourself so youre not too
beat up coming out of camp and
then the start of the season. They
take care of us here. We just really focus on the games and our

preparation during the week.

Right tackle Bryan Bulaga
wasnt a fan of the early bye, but
with other players injured, he understood how some of his teammates appreciated a week to recover.
However, he also knows how
difficult it can be to maintain a
healthy team for the four months.
The Packers can use the few days
after their Thursday, Oct. 20,
game against the Bears as a mini
bye week, but the next full week

off wont come until the Wild Card

round of the playoffs in January
if Green Bay is one of the top two
seeds in the NFC.
Green Bay had 11 players on
the injury report before the Lions
matchup. That number dropped
to eight after the bye week. Chris
Banjo, Josh Hawkins and Jeff
Janis have all been healed from
injuries along with Micah Hyde,
TJ Lang and Jayrone Elliott.

ON THE COVER: Eddie Lacy, a powerful running back, might take a beating over 13 straight weeks of football. With their bye week behind them, the Packers will need to stay healthy
if they want to make a strong playoff push.

Sam Shields remains in

the concussion protocol,
while Damarious Randall
(groin) and Aaron Ripkowski (back) are recovering from injuries sustained
against the Lions.
Without much time off,
staying healthy for a lateseason run will be one of
the biggest challenges for
the team.
It is what it is. We got
through it, Bulaga said.
Weve got to go straight
through here.
Green Bay plays its
next three games at home.
The Giants, however,
are coming off a Monday
night loss at Minnesota
and had a short week to
prep for the Packers.
Weve been in that
situation before and came
out and won, wide receiver Jordy Nelson said.
There might be a slight
thing because they travel
back-to-back weeks.
The Packers offense,
which was stagnant against
Minnesota and missed opportunities against Jacksonville, looked strong in

Detroit. But there is no per-

fect formula to maintaining

that momentum, especially

after being away for a week.

Its all about execu-

tion. Thats what it comes

down to, Nelson said.

You can carry (momentum) through a bye week

just as you can week to
week. Every game is different. Every scenario is
different.
Wide receiver Davante
Adams pointed out that
game situations dont always relate to how a team
practiced during a given
week.
For the first two weeks,
the Packers mustered just
20.5 points per game before
posting 34 points in Week 3.
Even with the first
two games not being on
the same page as much,
practice was still flowing,
Adams said. We just continue to trust our training
and know weve got the best
guy dealing to us, and weve
just got to go out there and
make sure we get open.
The New York secondary has struggled this season, not recording an interception yet. If Rodgers
and Co. can build off the
first half of Week 3, theres
no reason for the unit to
not be confident.
Were still fired up,
and its still early in the
season, so we definitely got that initial burst
still going, Adams said.

New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham has made headlines this season for his emotional outbursts and comments about officials, but he and
the Giants receiving corps will be a strong test for the Green Bay Packers secondary Sunday at Lambeau Field.

In studying Odell Beckham Jr., Green Bay Packers cornerback Damarious Randall focuses only
on what the New York Giants receiver is doing on
the field.
Its everything else
that Beckham is doing or
saying after the whistle
and off the field that keeps
drawing headlines.
The spotlight is only
going to get brighter on
Sunday night when the Giants face the Packers in a
nationally televised game.

Randall figures to get

the assignment of defending Beckham, a matchup
that might draw extra notice from the officials.
I dont pay attention
to all the off-the-field issues thats going on with
him, that (doesnt have
anything) to do with me,
Randall said Wednesday.
Im just watching his
film, and Beckham is a
great, great receiver.
And a frustrated one,
too.
Beckham drew an unsportsmanlike

ago against Washington,

Beckham had a couple of
meltdowns on the sideline
during the game.
Giants coach Ben McAdoo has said he was not
aware about Beckhams
allegations that he was
being targeted by the officials.
As the focal point of
New Yorks offense, Beckham might be watched
more closely by officials
because of his reputation
for emotional outbursts.
Nah, I just mean, just
like I said, hes a great,
great receiver, Randall
told reporters when asked
if Beckham was a player
whom defensive players can try to get riled. I
mean, I dont know about
all that off the field, all the
emotional things that (you
all) are talking about.
Giants
quarterback
Eli Manning attributed
Beckhams frustrations to
someone who wants the
hard work in practice to
pay off on game day.
And hey, Im with him.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Green Bay Packers cornerback Damarious Randall, left, says he is focusing on what Giants receiver Odell
Beckham Jr. does on the field, not off the field, in preparation for Sundays game at Lambeau Field.

I work extremely hard and

I want to go out there and
play well and move the ball
and score touchdowns,
Manning said on a conference call. Its frustrating when it doesnt go as

smoothly. Weve just got

to, weve got to put it all
together, and play to the
level weve prepared and
to our potential.
The Packers have had
their own problems of late

in pass coverage.
In Week 2, Minnesotas
Stefon Diggs hurt the
Packers secondary for
182 yards receiving and a
touchdown on nine catches. A week later , Detroits

yards and two scores on
six catches.
With top cornerback
Sam Shields out with a
concussion, Randall has
typically drawn the assignment of covering the
opponents top receiver.
The Packers first-round
draft pick in 2015 studied
film of his own play during the teams bye last
week.
I see a guy that was a
little bit off his technique,
a guy that was a little
banged up, Randall said.
He was listed on the injury
report on Wednesday with
a groin injury that limited
him in practice.
Everything thats in
the past is in the past.
Each and every week, Im
going to put each week
behind me and keep on
focusing on how I can get
better, he added.
Getting safety Morgan Burnett back should
help the secondary after
the veteran missed the
win over the Lions with a
groin injury. Burnett was
a full participant in practice on Wednesday.
With Shields likely out

for at least another week,

the Packers defensive
backfield will be tested
again by the Giants, who
are fourth in the league
in passing offense (288.5
yards per game).
Rookie Sterling Shepard and veteran Victor
Cruz join Beckham to give
quarterback Eli Manning
a dangerous receiving
group.
For Packers coach
Mike McCarthy, the upside with having to replace the injured Shields
and Burnett was the experience that younger players such as cornerback
LaDarius Gunter and
safety Kentrell Brice received in expanded roles.
McCarthy is focused
on developing that depth
and flexibility. When it
comes to Beckham, McCarthy said he is just focused on the film, and not
how Beckhams behavior
might impact how the
Packers play defense.
Its obviously an excellent receiving group,
theres no doubt about it,
theyre explosive, McCarthy said. Thats what
were focused on.

Improvements

New York hurting itself in losing streak
The Associated Press

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has gotten frustrated in New Yorks two-game losing streak. Head coach Ben McAdoo hopes an
improved offense steps on the field in Week 5.

Ben McAdoo isnt much

of a numbers guy.
The New York Giants
rookie coach knows that
statistics can be misleading. Take a look at New
Yorks scoring.
They are ranked 27th
in the NFL, averaging just
over 18 points.
Its not good, and certainly well below what one
would expect from a team
that is entering its third
season in the West Coast offense and has Eli Manning
throwing to Odell Beckham
Jr., Sterling Shepard and
Victor Cruz.
McAdoo is expecting
more, and soon. He knows
the problems. The Giants
are gaining yards, but hurting themselves with penal-

ties and turnovers.

I think we are ready to
break out, McAdoo said
Wednesday after the Giants
(2-2) practiced for Sunday
nights game against the
Green Bay Packers (2-1).
When asked if he was
referring to points, McAdoo
said the breakout was going to come in every way,
shape and form.
We are ready to breakout. We are due, he said,
adding he has confidence in
his offense.
Manning felt the Giants did some good things
against a good defense in
their 24-10 loss to the Vikings on Monday night.
We are close, the twotime Super Bowl MVP said.

and just change up everything. A lot of guys are doing a lot of good things. We
have to connect on a few
more plays here and there
and well be in good shape.
The Giants are sixth in
the league in total yards, averaging 375 yards per game.
In their two-game losing streak, the Giants have
hurt themselves. They have
turned the ball over five
times and had 19 penalties for 197 yards. They are
also 9 for 28 on third down,
roughly 32 percent. The defense also has failed to re-

cord a takeaway.
We have all the pieces, said halfback Orleans
Darkwa, who has taken
over as the starter with
Rashad Jennings sidelined
and Shane Vereen (triceps)
out for the season. We just
have to put it all together.
We have had good
weeks of practice. I feel we
are there. We are chomping
at the bit. You see the offense. You see the receivers
we have and the weapons
we have, on the line and in
the backfield. Its just a matter of time.
Left guard Justin Pugh
also feels good about the
offense, noting the mistakes have hurt more

than anything.
You cant keep saying
if this would not have happened or that would not
have happened, and this
would have gone differently, he said. Its not helping
us saying stuff like that. We
have to go out there and execute. We have to do it, and
stop saying were going to
do it.
Defensive end Olivier
Vernon believes the Giants
have time to change things.
We have 12 games left if
I am not mistaken, and we
have time to make our adjustments and play better
ball overall as a team, and
I think everyone realizes
that, he said.

Power rankings: Broncos unmatched at top of NFL

The Associated Press

The Denver Broncos are

one of two teams off to a 4-0
start this season. However,
they are alone at the top of
the latest AP Pro32 poll released on Tuesday.
The defending champion

Vikings received one firstplace vote for 367 points.

Quarterback Paxton Lynch filled in for Trevor Siemian, who left Sundays game with a shoulder injury, as the

Ryan Paces draft classes continue to show positive returns

here is a narrative around

these 2016 Chicago Bears
that the reason they are in
the second year of a complete rebuilding program is
due more than anything to the miserable job of drafting done by the Jerry
Angelo and Phil Emery regimes before them.
While he inherited second-year
players Brian Urlacher and Mike
Brown upon his arrival in Chicago in
June 2001, Angelos drafts from 2002
through 2006 produced a number of
solid players that formed the nucleus
of the 2006 NFC title team.
It was after that Super Bowl loss
that the Bears extended the contract
of Lovie Smith. According to multiple
sources, Smith began to flex his muscles with the personnel department
from that point on and was as or more
responsible for the poor drafts that
followed as Angelo was.
Regardless, there is no question
that the roster Ryan Pace inherited in
2015 included three players he could
build a contender around: Jay Cutler,
Alshon Jeffery and Kyle Long. Four if

Pace has also added undrafted
rookie free agents Bryce Callahan, Jacoby Glenn, Cameron Meredith and
Ben Braunecker, and found rookie
CreVon LeBlanc on the waiver wire
from New England and second-year
starter Harold Jones-Quartey from
Arizona last offseason.
So far, the young GM is doing a
commendable job of finding potential NFL-caliber talent, but there is a
bigger test he must pass. How many
of these kids are potential stars, the
kind you win playoff games with?
Perhaps they all are, perhaps none.
Thats why it takes two or three years
to figure out.
But from what weve seen so far,
I think White, Goldman, Callahan,
Whitehair, Hall and Howard have all
flashed some special traits.
Only time will tell, but if Pace has in
fact found three or four eventual Pro
Bowlers already and that is a huge
if the Bears might have something
special in the front office as well as on
the field.

Your 2016 Los Angeles Rams

on either side of the ball.
Ranked dead last in offense
and 23rd in defense, this undisciplined team has somehow managed to defeat Arizona and Seattle. L.A. is
too poorly coached and too undermanned on offense
to keep winning. Todd Gurley owners should be open
to trade offers while the second-year RB still (possibly)
has some value left.
And its probably time to adjust our expectations of Arizonas offense and Carolinas defense.
Through four games, neither unit seems anywhere
close to its level of play in 2015. Carolina is no longer a defense to steer clear of, and Larry Fitzgerald
and Michael Floyd will move down fantasy boards,
especially if Carson Palmer (concussion) misses
much time. Even with a healthy Palmer, the Cards
look out of sync.

MATCHUPS TO EXPLOIT
New England Patriots

OPPONENT: AT CLEVELAND BROWNS, SUNDAY, NOON

Its rare to see a fantasy matchup with this much
obvious upside. The Browns are clearly the worst
team in the league and the Patriots not only get Tom
Brady back, they will be looking to make a statement
after getting shut out for the first time since 1993.
Maybe this is too good to be true, the proverbial trap
game. Dont look a gift horse in the mouth start
your Pats. Gronk played more snaps last week and
is getting closer to 100 percent. Were going to hold
off, for now, on calling him a must start. Martellus
Bennett will continue to get targets with Brady under
center.
MUST START: Brady, Stephen Gostkowski
SOLID PLAY: LeGarrette Blount, Julian Edelman,
Gronkowski, Patriots D/ST
WORTH A LOOK: Chris Hogan, Bennett
LAST RESORT: James White, Danny Amendola

Philadelphia Eagles

OPPONENT: AT DETROIT LIONS, SUNDAY, NOON

The Lions just gave up 408 yards of offense to a
Bears unit that had previously been averaging 310.
Detroits defense is 25th in yards allowed and is dealing with significant injuries. Philadelphia counters
with an efficient offense that will be well rested after
a bye. Zach Ertz returns from injury and should see a
good number of targets.
MUST START: Ertz*
SOLID PLAY: Jordan Matthews, Eagles D/ST
WORTH A LOOK: Carson Wentz, Darren Sproles,
Ryan Mathews*, Caleb Sturgis
LAST RESORT: Wendell Smallwood, Nelson Agholor

OPPONENT: VS NEW YORK JETS, SUNDAY, NOON

Thus far, the Jets defense has been decidedly middle of the road. After delivering a clunker in Week 3,
Pittsburghs offense erupted against Kansas City. Roethlisberger, Bell and Brown are must starts.

MATCHUPS TO AVOID

Oakland Raiders

OPPONENT: VS SAN DIEGO CHARGERS,

SUNDAY, 3:25 PM
This contest features the highest over/under of the
week (50) and is a favorable fantasy matchup for both
teams. San Diego is much better against the run (7th)
than against the pass (27th). Thats great news for
owners of Derek Carr, Amari Cooper, and Michael
Crabtree. Cooper, in general, has been quiet this season. Crabtree has more receptions (26 to 20) and TDs (4
to 0). Cooper will go off one of these weeks and this
week is as good a bet as any.
MUST START: Carr
SOLID PLAY: Latavius Murray, Cooper, Crabtree,
Sebastian Janikowski
WORTH A LOOK: Clive Walford
LAST RESORT: DeAndre Washington, Seth Roberts
STAY AWAY: Raiders D/ST

Green Bay Packers

OPPONENT: VS NEW YORK GIANTS, SUNDAY, 7:30 PM

Fantasy owners will have to decide if the Packers
currently being ranked 29th in offense is an ominous
sign of things to come, or simply a three-game anomaly. The Giants (11th in fewest yards allowed) have
played solid defense, but Aaron Rodgers, Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb will challenge their mediocre
secondary.
MUST START: Rodgers, Nelson
SOLID PLAY: Eddie Lacy, Cobb, Mason Crosby
WORTH A LOOK: Packers D/ST
LAST RESORT: Davante Adams, Jared Cook, Richard
Rodgers

ALSO CONSIDER
Denver Broncos

OPPONENT: VS ATLANTA FALCONS, SUNDAY, 3:05 PM

The Falcons are clearly better than we expected
on offense. Their 30th-ranked defense is still rather
porous and Denver should score some points in this
one. Trevor Siemian (shoulder) is likely to start at
QB. Demaryius Thomas owners can breathe a sigh
of relief it looks like hes back to being a legitimate
fantasy WR1.

OPPONENT: AT MINNESOTA VIKINGS, SUNDAY, NOON

Minnesotas defense is seventh in yards allowed
and second in points allowed. Opponents are averaging just 12.5 ppg against the Vikes. Thats impressive
enough on the surface, but considering the competition, its a remarkable feat. During Weeks 2 through
4, Minnesota faced Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton and
Eli Manning, respectively. Brock Osweiler will be
scaring no one wearing purple.
Its hard to get too excited about any Texan in this
game. The Vikings are proficient against the run (8th)
and the pass (9th). Houston has a solid D/ST, but Minnesota is so conservative on offense, its hard to see the
Texans generating any defensive scoring plays. Were
calling Lamar Miller a solid play, but this matchup
is well below average. Hopkins owners in smaller
leagues may want to look elsewhere.
SOLID PLAY: Miller
WORTH A LOOK: Hopkins, Will Fuller, Texans D/ST
STAY AWAY: Osweiler, Nick Novak

Los Angeles Rams

OPPONENT: VS BUFFALO BILLS, SUNDAY, 3:25 PM

Hovering around 40, this game features a seasonlow over/under. Its hard to get excited about fantasy
options on either team. Buffalo is allowing a lowerthan-average 3.6 yards per carry, which could mean
another dud for Todd Gurley. You probably have to
play him, but yards are going to be hard to come by.
SOLID PLAY: Gurley
WORTH A LOOK: Rams D/ST
STAY AWAY: Case Keenum, Kenny Britt, Brian
Quick, Lance Kendricks, Greg Zuerlein

ALSO BEWARE
Washington

OPPONENT: AT BALTIMORE RAVENS, SUNDAY, NOON

Washington has been up and down on offense. They
are more likely to be down against a very good defense. The Ravens are yielding a league-fewest 256
yards per game.

Buffalo Bills

OPPONENT: AT LOS ANGELES RAMS, SUNDAY, 3:25 PM

This should be an offensive game it will most
likely offend any fans hoping to see touchdowns. The
Rams defense (23rd in yards allowed) is overrated,
but outside of LeSean McCoy the Bills dont offer
much in the way of fantasy options.

Jim Caldwell benched Golden Tate following a critical
gaffe in Detroits third consecutive defeat, 17-14, to the
Bears, begging the question: Is rookie GM Bob Quinn
considering making changes of his own? Caldwells
Lions are a combined 1-7 in Weeks 1-4 from 2015-16,
and repeat mistakes including penalties and defensive
breakdowns, not to mention Matthew Stafford showing
signs of his former turnover-prone self with four interceptions during Detroits skid, mean Caldwells job
security is once again a hot topic
After playing three of four to begin the season
away from Ford Field, the Lions return home for three
straight, beginning Sunday versus Philadelphia, which
is coming off a Week 4 bye. Unlike the Lions, who desperately miss their two best defenders, DE Ezekiel Ansah and WLB DeAndre Levy, the Eagles are healthy
though they could be without RT Lane Johnson, whose
10-game PED ban is slated to begin this week.
Jim Schwartz brings his No. 1 scoring D to his old
stomping grounds, where the Lions offense, held out of
the end zone in nine of the past 12 quarters, is searching for answers. Schwartzs aggressive upfield D wont
be new to Stafford, but reigning Defensive Player of
the Month Fletcher Cox will be a nuisance for C Travis
Swanson and RG Larry Warford.

After dominating the Giants in all three phases, the

NFCs last undefeated club extended its regular-season
win streak to an NFL-best seven games, yielding an average of just 14.6 points per along the way. Indeed, its
all clicking for Mike Zimmers club, from former firstround flameout Cordarrelle Pattersons evolving role
on offense and special teams to the masterful efficiency
of Sam Bradford to a defense every bit as dominant as
Super groups in Denver and Seattle.
Not only are the Vikings the new team to beat in the
NFC, Mike Zimmer has positioned himself as the favorite for Coach of the Year honors at the quarter-pole.
Zimmers staff has put on a coaching exhibition while
adjusting on the fly with Bradford and after injuries
to Adrian Peterson and LT Matt Kalil. The run game
appears diversified, the O-line is ascending and the
defense, well, its been dominant for a while now and
only getting better. If were Zimmer, the one current
concern wed have is PK Blair Walsh, whos far too erratic to again be allowed to spoil his teams special roll.
Houston has eight giveaways (six by Brock Osweiler), more than all but two teams the NFLs most disappointing pair, Arizona and Carolina. The Vikings are
up to 11 takeaways and a ridiculous plus-10 turnover
differential.

Fresh off the bye, Green Bay continues with the second of a four-game stretch at Lambeau Field, where
the offense found its groove against Detroit two weeks
ago. Their performance after the layoff against a
much stouter Giants defense, albeit with a banged-up
secondary and lack of opportunism, should provide a
better measuring stick for the Packers offense. Any
way its measured, Green Bays run defense has been
nothing short of sensational, permitting a paltry 128
yards through three games the fewest by a Packers
club over such a span since at least 1933.
When Mike McCarthy welcomes old friend Ben
McAdoo, who served on McCarthys staff from 200613, back to Green Bay for the first time since leaving
for New York, hell be familiar with McAdoos West
Coast scheme. But its hard to simulate seeing Odell
Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard, making their
Lambeau Field debuts.
Speaking of OBJ, hell likely line up across from
Sam Shields, whose absence the past two games with
a concussion has stressed Damarious Randall and the
secondary. Shields fabulous recovery speed is critical against a home run hitter like Beckham, whos
too easily unraveled when big and aggressive corners
Shields and Randall bang him around early and often.

PACKERS NOTEBOOK
By Green & Gold Express Staff

MCCARTHY-MCADOO
CONNECTION

As much as Mike McCarthy and

Ben McAdoo tried to downplay it,
the head coaches will be at center
stage when the Green Bay Packers
host the New York Giants on Sunday night.
Their connection goes back to
2003. McAdoo was looking for a job
after the football program at Fairfield University in Connecticut was
disbanded. He made some phone
calls and learned that the New Orleans Saints were looking for an offensive quality control coach. The
Saints offensive coordinator was
McCarthy.
I actually got him on the phone
and talked to him briefly, McAdoo
recalled in a Q&A with Giants.com
in 2015, when he was in his second
year as New Yorks offensive coordinator. He said, I think the position is filled. We have to go through
all the red tape and everything like
that, but we have a pretty good candidate right now. He would let me
know after he got back from Indianapolis if the job was filled or not. I
did not want to wait. I wanted to try
and grab him as soon as I could get
my hands on him.
The position is filled line didnt
stop McAdoo. Nor did a snowstorm.
McAdoo hopped in his car in hopes
of connecting with McCarthy at the
Scouting Combine.
I remember driving in West Virginia over the hills trying to figure
out if I was on the road or not, McAdoo said in that Q&A. It was one
of those type deals. Everyone was
in a state of emergency, and I am
trucking through. It took me about
26 hours to get from Connecticut to
Indianapolis. I had my suit ready to
go, and I was sitting in the mall outside the Canterbury (Hotel) with a
big duffle bag full of binders ready
to show my work. Youve got to do
what youve got to do sometimes.
A year later, McAdoo got the job.
The next year, McAdoo followed
McCarthy to San Francisco, where
McCarthy was taking the reins as
offensive coordinator. A year later,
McCarthy was named the Packers
head coach. McAdoo came along,
spending six years as tight ends
coach, followed by a two-year stint

as quarterbacks coach, before becoming the Giants offensive coordinator in 2014.

Neither coach was willing to
reminisce on Wednesday. McCarthy said his focus was on schematics. McAdoos focus was getting
his team ready following a Monday
night loss at Minnesota.
I havent given it much thought,
McAdoo said during a Wednesday
evening conference call. Its a
quick week for us this week, playing
on Monday night, fast turnaround.
Im sure Ill have some thoughts
and emotions when I walk through
the tunnel for the first time.
And what might those emotions
be?
Well see, he said. Im excited
to get back on the field with these
guys. Im not someone whos overly emotional or dramatic or any of
those types of things. I like to take
care of the task at hand and focus
on my work.

QUARTERBACK MATCHUP

From a national perspective, the

big matchup doesnt involve the
head coaches or the presidential
candidates, who will be debating
on Sunday. Rather, its the quarterbacks. In one corner, its Green
Bays Aaron Rodgers, the two-time
NFL MVP. In the other corner, its
the Giants Eli Manning, the twotime Super Bowl champion.
McAdoo knows them both well.
I think being around franchise
quarterbacks and being around
Brett (Favre), too, I think the competitive drive, the consistency in
preparation, being able to articulate whats happening on the field
and the ability they have to see the
entire field is always something
thats unbelievable to me, and just
how slow the game is for them,
McAdoo said.

MILESTONE MANNING

Manning is two touchdown passes away from becoming the eighth

player in NFL history with 300
touchdown passes and is one win
away from 100 regular-season victories. Plus, when playoffs are included, this will be his 199th consecutive
start. Thats still a long way behind
Brett Favres record 321, but hell
pull within 28 starts of Peyton Mannings second-place streak.

I think Elis a great quarterback, McCarthy said. Obviously,

his production and what hes accomplished in the past speaks for
itself. Personally, the thing Im so
impressed with is that he lines up
and plays every single week.
Thats a tremendous accomplishment in this league. I
think availability is the No.
1 characteristic youre looking for in players, particularly quarterbacks. I mean,
hes a natural. Hes been
playing quarterback his
whole life. We clearly understand his family background.
He has total command of
the offense. Hes very comfortable in it. I think hes
a great fit for the system.
Hes playing very well.

RODGERS TO
RODGERS

The Giants spent almost

$200 million in free agency this
offseason. The Packers lone move
was signing tight end Jared Cook.
Cook, however, figures to miss
the game with a high-ankle sprain
sustained early in the Week 3 win
at Detroit. That means Richard
Rodgers will be back in the saddle.
After catching 58 passes and scoring eight touchdowns last season,
he has five catches for 58 yards and
one touchdown this season.
Rich has done a great job since
Day 1, receiver Jordy Nelson said.
I dont think a lot of people give
him enough credit for what he did
as a rookie. He came in and, for the
most part, got thrust into a starting
position. Thats hard for anyone. To
think of what he had to do last year
in the run game, pass game, protection, thats one of the more difficult
jobs on our team is to get a grasp of
all that. Hes running every route
were running, but hes also having
to block in the run game and also
protect and deal with all the blitzes
and everything. We have all the confidence in the world in Rich. Theres
not a person thats second-guessed
anything when Jared went down,
which we dont want, but its part of
the game. We expect Rich to do
what he does. Hes got great
hands and creates separation and makes the plays
that we need him to make.

WHEN THE PACKERS

HAVE THE BALL

Through the first quarter of the season, the Giants defense looks a bit
like the Packers defense.
New York is a powerhouse against the run,
ranking ninth in rushing
yards allowed per game
(84.0) and third in yards
allowed per carry (3.17).
The Giants, however,
are vulnerable against
the pass, ranking 18th in
passing yards allowed
per game (262.3). They
have no pass rush (31st
in sacks per attempt) and
are the only team in the
league without an interception.
The Giants opened the
vault in free agency to improve this side of the ball.
Cornerback Janoris Jenkins signed a five-year,
$62.5 million contract to
improve the coverage.
Defensive end Olivier
Vernon signed a five-year,
$85 million contract to
improve the pass rush.

Defensive tackle Damon

Harrison signed a fiveyear, $46.5 million contract to improve the run
defense. Plus, they used
their first-round pick on
cornerback Eli Apple and
their third-round pick on
safety Darian Thompson,
who became immediate
starters.
While Harrison has
been tremendous, Vernon
has one sack after piling
up 25.5 over his previous
three seasons with the
Dolphins, and Jenkins
has no interceptions and
two passes defensed after tallying 10 picks and
48 PBUs in four seasons
with the Rams.
The Giants pass defense could be ripe for the
picking. Not only is the
pass rush lacking with
just four sacks but injuries also were a big factor
in Monday nights loss to
the Vikings. Cornerbacks
Apple (hamstring) and
Dominique
RodgersCromartie (groin) were
out, as was Thompson
(foot). That leaves the
Giants potentially down
three of their top five
defensive backs against
Aaron Rodgers and a
Packers passing attack
that showed signs of life
vs. Detroit. Expect Rodgers to steer clear of Jen-

kins unless he can be

baited on a double-move
and attack backups
Trevin Wade and Leon
Hall. Wade, who entered
the NFL in 2012, has no
career interceptions. The
past-his-prime Hall had
22 interceptions in his
first six seasons but four
in his last four.
New Yorks defense
ranks 31st in sacks and
32nd in takeaways. In
fact, the Giants are the
only team in the league
to have not intercepted a
pass. Fixing those numbers would go a long way
toward helping the Giants
spring the upset. While
Rodgers hasnt been
dominant
statistically,
McAdoo sees the same
dominant player.
I think Aarons looking good, he said. I think
Minnesotas a tough place
to play with that crowd
noise, first game in that
stadium is a challenge. I
think they had a challenging opener in Jacksonville. Its tough to prepare
for that heat that they saw
there, but they moved the
ball, they were productive,
it was a big win for them,
and then obviously when
you play in Lambeau,
thats a little different aniSEE KEYS, PAGE 17

Dont be fooled by the

Giants No. 27 ranking in
points per game (18.3).
The Giants have a highpowered attack, which is
operated by quarterback
Eli Manning. Manning
has completed 66.4 percent of his passes and is
on pace to throw for more
than 4,700 yards. He has
one of the better threeman receiving corps in
the NFL with superstar
Odell Beckham Jr., veteran Victor Cruz and
smooth
second-round
rookie Sterling Shepard.
Beckham has caught
22 passes for 303 yards
(13.8-yard average) but
surprisingly hasnt found
the end zone after scoring
25 touchdowns in his first
two seasons. He can be
a one-man highlight film
when hes focused and on
his game. His matchup
with the Packers Damarious Randall will be a
fascinating one and a key
to this game. Beckham
caught just three of nine
passes for only 23 yards
vs. Minnesota, a game in
which the most noise he

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2016

made was a spat with Vikings cornerback Xavier

Rhodes. Randall, however, is coming off two
subpar
performances.
Shepard, who has 20 receptions for 263 yards
(13.2 average) and two
scores, operates out of
the slot. The slot is where
Cruz has done most of
his damage throughout
his career, but hes had
to move to the outside to
accommodate the rookie.
Cruz has 16 grabs for 245
yards (15.3 average) and
one touchdown.
Injuries are a factor
on offense, too. Tight
end Larry Donnell, who
caught 63 passes with
six touchdowns in 2014,
suffered a concussion
against Minnesota. Veteran running back Rashad
Jennings missed the Minnesota game (thumb) and
versatile Shane Vereen is
on injured reserve (triceps). If Jennings is out
or limited, the Giants will
lean on Orleans Darkwa
(100 yards, 4.3 average),
pass-catching but fumble-prone Bobby Rainey
(seven catches vs. Minnesota) and fleet-footed
rookie Paul Perkins (67yard catch vs. Minnesota)
in the backfield.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Giants special

teams are prone to big
plays either way. Kicker

17

Josh Brown is one of the

best in the business. Hes
6-of-7 on field goals this
season after making 30 of
32 last year for an NFLbest 93.8 percent success
rate. Punter Brad Wing
boasts a gaudy 49.7-yard
average but a net of just
37.6. He has booted four
touchbacks and opponents have averaged 12.7
yards per return. Returner Dwayne Harris
is a weapon, with a 25.8yard average on kickoffs
and 10.0 yards on punt
returns. However, his
muffed punt last week
spotted the Vikings a 7-0
lead. He had touchdowns
in both phases last year.
Other than Ty Montgomerys heads-up play on a
sideline kickoff against
Detroit in Week 3, Green
Bays return game has
made no impact. The
Packers have lost the
net-punting battle by 5.4
yards per kick.

COACHING

Green Bays Mike

McCarthy is 114-63-1,
including an 8-7 record
in the postseason. Two
of those playoff losses
came at the hands of the
Giants the 2007 NFC
Championship
Game
and the 2011 divisional
playoffs, both at Lambeau Field. Ben McAdoo
is 2-2 in his first season
with the Giants.

Rudolph emerging as go-to

target for Sam Bradford
QB-TE duo growing bond
over previous five weeks
The Associated Press

Kyle Rudolph split

wide to the left and was
matched up against Giants cornerback Trevin
Wade.
As the Minnesota Vikings tight end ran a
slant into the end zone,
Wade was all over him.
But in his short time in
Minnesota, quarterback
Sam Bradford has quickly
learned that even when
Rudolph is covered, it
doesnt mean hes not
open.
The 6-foot-6 Rudolph
shielded the 5-foot-10
Wade behind him, giving Bradford a big target
for what proved to be a
much easier scoring pass
than it probably should

have been. The two have

formed a fast connection,
and Rudolph is exhibiting the difference-making
skills that have occasionally been masked by injuries.
Rudolph has 19 catches for 221 yards and three
touchdowns, tied for the
NFL lead among tight
ends. He has caught a
TD in each of the three
games quarterbacked by
Bradford, who was acquired just over a week
before the regular season opener to take the
place of the injured Teddy
Bridgewater.
It shows the confidence that Sam has in
me to throw balls in those
tight windows when guys
are draped on my back or

in close proximity, Rudolph said after a 24-10

victory over the New York
Giants on Monday night
improved the Vikings to
4-0. If he has the confidence to throw it to me in
those situations, I have to
come down with the ball.
I take pride in catching it
in those situations.
Rudolph has already
been targeted 33 times
this season, making him
one of the featured elements of the Vikings
passing game along with
receiver Stefon Diggs,
who also has 33 targets.
Hes really good at
being physical, especially through the catch,
Bradford said. So I
think theres times, even
though a guy might be
in good position, Kyle
can use his body to come
away with the catch.

Tight end Kyle Rudolph (82) has formed a fast connection with new quarterback Sam Bradford to help the
Vikings to a 4-0 start to the season.

RUDOLPH
FROM PAGE 20

Rudolph did not practice

on Wednesday and was listed on the injury report with
clavicle and rib injuries.
Right tackle Andre Smith
(triceps), tight end Rhett
Ellison (Rhett Ellison),
Diggs (groin) and tight end
David Morgan (knee) also
did not practice on the first
day of preparation for hosting the Houston Texans on
Sunday.
Rudolph was drafted in
the second round in 2011.
The Vikings were so tantalized by his size, speed and
hands that they took him
despite a severe hamstring
injury that cut short his junior season at Notre Dame.
By the time his second
season was over, he was
emerging as a force. He
caught 53 passes, including
nine TDs, and was named
MVP of the Pro Bowl after
the 2012 season. But injuries limited him to 17 games
total in 2013 and 2014.
He was able to play in
all 16 games last year with
Bridgewater, hauling in 49
passes for a career-high 495
yards and five TDs. Those
numbers could have been

even better had the Vikings

not needed him to spend so
much time blocking to help
a beleaguered offensive
line. This year, they have
turned him loose a little
more often, and they have
needed to on an offense
that is missing All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson
while still working Bradford
fully into the mix.
Coach Mike Zimmer
called what Bradford has
done with Rudolph throwing him open.
I thought hes made
some really good catches
in tight quarters, Zimmer
said Wednesday. Theres
the one third down play
where the ball was a little
low the other day and he
made a nice catch on that.
Kyles got good hands, and
theyre developing a good
rapport.
A big start to the season
only got bigger this week
when Rudolph and his wife
Jordan welcomed twin girls
to the family. He had hoped
to catch two touchdown
passes in the game against
the Giants, one for each of
them.
I guess theyll have to
learn to share, Rudolph
said. Thats their first lesson.-

Bears wide receiver Kevin White going on injured reserved list

The Associated Press

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Chicago Bears wide receiver Kevin White (13) suffered a fractured left fibula and ankle sprain Sunday against Detroit. He will
be placed on injured reserve but could return late in the regular
season.

Chicago Bears wide receiver Kevin White will be

placed on injured reserve
with a fractured left fibula,
costing him much of the season after missing his entire
rookie season with a stress
fracture in the same leg.
White was injured Sunday in a 17-14 victory over
the Detroit Lions. In addition to the broken bone,
White suffered a high ankle
sprain as he was tackled
during the third quarter.
White leads the Bears
this season in receptions
with 19 and has 187 receiving yards. The seventh
overall draft pick in 2015, he
went on IR during the preseason last year because of
left shin injury.
Coach John Fox characterized the latest injury as
a spiral fracture and said
White could come off IR late
in the season.
This injury is not nearly
as serious as the last one,

Fox said Wednesday. Its a

completely different bone in
the lower leg.
White was gradually
picking up the NFL game
and had six catches Sunday against the Lions. Fox
called it Whites best game
and quarterback Brian Hoyer agreed.
Just as a football player,
football awareness, catching
the ball, really everywhere
he was making strides each
week, Hoyer said. So I
know thats disappointing
for him.
Missing most of his first
two seasons could lead to
a problem in Whites development. Fox said his own
experience with Denver receiver Demaryius Thomas
keeps him from selling players short due to missed time
early in their careers.
He (Thomas) probably
didnt do a whole lot until
year three, Fox said. He
had setbacks and he was
injured coming out of college. He had an Achilles in-

jury after that and a finger

injury after that and he had
two surgeries in his first
year and a half of NFL football. Hes turned out pretty
good.
With White gone, Bears
backups Cameron Meredith
and Josh Bellamy will be
called on to make bigger
contributions at wide receiver to provide a counter
threat to Alshon Jeffery
heading into Sundays game
at Indianapolis.
Meredith had four catches against Detroit for 28
yards. A former quarterback at Illinois State, he
thinks that experience can
give him an advantage.
Its started to kind of
fade away, Meredith said
of his background throwing passes instead of catching them. But those little
things, you need to get on
the same page with the
quarterback, know where
they want to throw the ball.
Im excited to get out there
and make some plays.

Hoyer continued taking

snaps with the first team
with Jay Cutler sidelined
due to a thumb sprain. Cutler did not practice again
Wednesday.
On Monday, Fox called
every position performancebased including quarterback. This would suggest
Hoyer can keep the position
if he continues to produce
like he did Sunday with 302
passing yards and a passer
rating of 120.1.
At this point Im just trying to keep doing what Im
doing, keep doing what Im
asked of, Hoyer said. And
when I get a chance to play,
play the best I can.
Inside linebacker Danny
Trevathan, who had thumb
surgery two weeks ago,
practiced Wednesday on a
limited basis with a cast on
his hand. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said its
his experience that playing
with cast doesnt work well,
but its possible Trevathan
could manage it.

Hyder racking up sacks, one of bright spots for Lions

The Associated Press

Kerry Hyder is humble,

not bitter. Motivated, not
satisfied.
Only the reigning Super
Bowl MVP, Von Miller of
the Denver Broncos, has
more sacks this season
than Hyder, a player few
had heard of a year ago.
The defensive end has five
sacks and has been one of
the few bright spots for the
Detroit Lions (1-3) so far.
Hyder quietly waited
his turn to get a chance to
play in the NFL, going undrafted in 2014 and spending nearly two seasons on
practice squads with the
New York Jets and Lions
before getting his shot.
He is making the most of
an opportunity that came
about because Ezekiel Ansah has missed much of
the season with a sprained
left ankle.
Hyder insisted he never
doubted his ability to play
in the league.

It was just a matter of

time, Hyder said Wednesday.
Hyder speaks softly
with a gentle smile, but
practices hard and plays
with relentless effort to
make up for his lack of
imposing size or blazing speed. The 6-foot-2,
270-pound Hyder understands why he was not
among the 256 players taken in the 2014 NFL draft
after he had two sacks as a
senior at Texas Tech.
Im not 6-5. I dont
have the measureables
that people look for, he
said. A player like me just
needs a chance to get in to
show that you can make
plays at this level. It was
hard. Sometimes I would
get anxious and wonder
why I wasnt getting a shot.
My mom and dad would always tell me to enjoy the
process. My dad would
remind me there are a
bunch of people fighting
for those practice squad

spots so make them earn

it if theyre going to take
your spot.
The Rex Ryan-led Jets
gave him his first NFL job,
putting him on their practice squad two years ago.
When the season was
over, Rex wasnt there
anymore and it was clearly
time for me to find a better
situation, Hyder said.
Hyders second chance
came last year in Detroit,
and he took advantage. He
was regularly recognized
for helping the team prepare for opponents as the
look team player of the
week.
He got it several
weeks, Lions coach Jim
Caldwell said. And, he
probably couldve gotten it
almost every week.
Caldwell and his coaches noticed Hyder was in
the backfield a lot so they
moved him from defensive
tackle to end and asked him
to lose some weight. It has
