V. Atonement
6. We believe that Jesus Christ, by His sufferings, by the shedding of His
own blood, and by His death on the Cross, made a full atonement for all
human sin, and that this Atonement is the only ground of salvation, and
that it is sufficient for every individual of Adams race. The Atonement is
graciously efficacious for the salvation of those incapable of moral
responsibility and for the children in innocency but is efficacious for the
salvation of those who reach the age of responsibility only when they
repent and believe.

Sundays Messenger: Pastor Peter ODriscall

Message Text: Mark 6:45-52 (NIV)
Title: Jesus, the Author of our Storms

45 Immediately

Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of Him to Bethsaida, while He
dismissed the crowd. 46 After leaving them, He went up on a mountainside to pray.
47 Later

that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and He was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples
straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn He went out to them, walking on
the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw Him walking on the lake, they thought He was a
ghost. They cried out, 50 because they all saw Him and were terrified.
Immediately He spoke to them and said, Take courage! It is I. Dont be afraid. 51 Then He climbed into the boat
with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the
loaves; their hearts were hardened.

Excerpts from Pastor Peters message:

Sometimes we are gripped with fear and doubt. In verse 45, Jesus MADE his disciples (King James Version
constrained His disciples) like making your children finish their vegetables, or make their beds, or forced/by
persuasion pushed them in the boat. John 6 - The miracle when Jesus fed the 5,000 and the people were
following Jesus He creates miracles they wanted to be a part of that. He just spoke the words and miracles
happened. They thought, Isnt this the Messiah? Jesus knows what the people are thinking so He didnt want
the disciples to be caught up in this, so He made sure that they got into the boat. Jesus doesnt necessarily seek
out our approval He gently forced them.
He does not seek our approval for His plans for our lives. He doesnt consult us before He allows something to
happen in our lives. We may lose money, or be in a one-sided relationship where the other gets hurt.
March 1978, I was in a bad accident and God didnt say, Hey Peter, you are going to be paralyzed for the rest of
your life is that okay? If I knew then what I know now, I would have said okay. You see, when difficulty sets
in, He just asks us to trust Him.
The disciples didnt want to get in the boat. They obeyed him (even though they didnt want to).
Verse 47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake. A storm sets in. Jesus sees them struggling in
the storm. This was a bad storm, one that the ship needed to drop their anchors/sails. They did not want to get in

the storm They probably started discussing how did they get into this mess? He (Jesus) got us in this mess to
begin with. They were struggling in their obedience. The disciples did what Jesus wanted them to do. Just like
Joseph in Potiphars house or Daniel in the Lions den, or the three Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace. Daniel
wasnt saved BEFORE he was placed inside the lions den He was saved IN the lions den. The Hebrew boys
werent saved BEFORE they were placed into the fiery furnace. They were saved IN the furnace. Obey the Lord
and have smooth sailings??? No!! Prepare your life for the storms. There were no friendly people escorting them
in the lions den or the fiery furnace. Saints are struggling with insurmountable problems. He gives us enough to
bend our knees but not break our backs.
When we are going through the storms, we want to know if God is watching where is He, does He care?
Verse 47: Later that night He saw them straining at the oars. He saw them 3 miles away. They were
wondering if He knew what they were doing was He watching me? He is watching us? He knows everything
about us. How glorious is that!!!
Verse 48 Great difficulty Do You see us, Lord? And after He sees them, He does not come right away. He
comes just before dawn when they had no energy left. He walks on water and they see a figure and assume it is
a ghost. They didnt know it was the Lord. They cried Help US!! They didnt expect the Lord to be there. If you
look for Jesus, He will be there. He can be found in the midst of your storms. No matter what you are going
through. Your entire life is either you are in a storm, going through a storm, or just came out of a storm.
He climbs in the boat and goes to sleep - the storm stops. Sometimes He wants us to inwardly rest in Him. There
are no emergency meetings between God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. HE IS ALWAYS
THERE. The disciples did not understand. They had seen the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000 this was just
another storm. Their hearts were hardened. They, like us, fail to apply our present circumstances to what He has
done for us in the past.
Pastor Peter told us a situation where the crew members where in a ship that was about to go through a terrible
storm, when the captain sent them all down into the bottom of the boat. One of the crew members decided to
sneak up to see how things were going and he saw the face of the captain. His face was smiling (confidently)
although he had both hands on the steering wheel. Thats when the crew member went back down into the
bottom of the boat with confidence HE SAW THE FACE OF THE CAPTAIN. I have seen the face of the
Captain!
Jesus says, Trust Me. I can take care of your physical and spiritual storms. I can get you through the difficulty.
Every time, do we give up because we cant go through? Jesus can give you His peace.

This Weeks Quote:

But He said to me, My grace is sufficient
for you, for My power is made perfect in
weakness.
