Homework #1
1. A glass window with an area of 0.557 m2 is installed in the wooden outside wall of a room. The
wall dimensions are 2.44 m by 3.05 m. The wood has a k of 0.1505 W/m-K and is 25.4 mm thick.
The glass is 3.18 mm thick and has a k of 0.692 W/m-K. The inside room temperature is 299.9 K
and the outside air temperature is 266.5 K. The convection coefficient h i on the inside wall of the
glass and of the wood is estimated as 8.5 W/m 2-K, and the outside ho is also 8.5 W/m2-K for both
surfaces. Calculate the
a. Heat loss through the wooden wall
b. Heat loss through the glass window
c. Total heat loss
d. Inside and outside surface temperatures of the wooden wall
e. Inside and outside surface temperatures of the glass window
2. Benzene is condensing at atmospheric pressure (101.325 kPa) on the outside of a 25-mm-OD
steel pipe, and air at 288 K flows within at 6 m/s. The pipe wall is 3.5-mm thick. h i = 20 W/m2, ho
= 1200 W/m2, km = 45 W/mC.
a. Calculate the overall heat-transfer coefficients based on both the inside and outside
surface areas.
b. Calculate the heat transfer rate per meter of pipe.
c. Calculate the inside and outside surface temperatures of the metal pipe.
Vapor pressure (Pa) at temperature T (K) can be determined through:
For benzene, C1 = 83.107, C2 = -6486.2, C3 = -9.2194, C4 = 6.9844(10 -6), C5 = 2
