An a-maize-ing way
to raise awareness

Bump, set and spike to a win

Seneca Psychology Club Haunted

Corn Maze Challenge will raise money
for the National Alliance on Mental Illness
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
October is filled with fun
things to do to celebrate fall and
Halloween. However, October is
also a time to bring awareness to
a lot of health-related diseases
and conditions such as breast
cancer, Down syndrome and mental illness.
Seneca High Schools Psychology Club is mixing the fun of October and the need to spread mental
health illness awareness together
with a Haunted Corn Maze Challenge on Oct. 27. The Haunted
Corn Maze Challenge, held in
partnership with V & V Adventure Farm, will raise awareness
about mental illness and money
for the National Alliance on Mental Illness in a fun way.
"I am beyond excited for the
Haunted Corn Maze because it
will be a great community event,
and hopefully a successful way to
raise money for NAMI. Between
the bonfire, food, corn maze and
prizes, it's sure to be spooktacular, said Seneca junior Julia
Collins, the Psychology Club's

communications director.
Each year, the Seneca Psychology Club, made up of Seneca students and led by advisor Sean
Kennevan, organizes an event to
raise mental health awareness
and to raise money to donate to
National Alliance on Mental Illness. The club's mission is to
raise mental health awareness so
everyone becomes more educated
on the prevalence of mental illness in the U.S. and what can be
done early on to help those individuals and their respective families in need. The club partners
with NAMI since it is the nation's
largest grassroots mental health
organization. The club also works
directly with NAMI FACE of
Burlington County, which works
with individuals and families
from the local community.
We are raising money for
NAMI to raise awareness for
mental illnesses in our community. One out of five American
adults suffers from a mental illness (according to NAMI statistic), and we are trying to help that

report also stresses the need for
volunteers.

4 THE SHAMONG SUN OCT. 1218, 2016

CANDIDATES

MEET
THE

Every week, The Sun will ask the candidates in the Nov. 8 election for committee to respond to
questions pertinent to local issues. You can find responses online at www.shamongsun.com.
This weeks questions: 1.) What are your feelings on the recent municipal budgets and tax rates
in Shamong? 2.) What do you think can be done to attract new families to move to Shamong?
1.) First, feelings dont come into play
when we talk about budgets and tax rates.
The numbers will always tell the story. I
recently went back to take a look at our
municipal budget from 10 years ago, I
wanted to see how different the numbers
looked from an aid perspective. Since
2006, the amount of financial aid Shamong receives from the state has dropped
by almost 50 percent per year, and the
amount of money will continue to decline for the foreseeable future. Financial
decisions at the state level continue to put

pressure on all of usas you

have recently seen, the state
transportation fund, empty. The
future gas tax increase by 23
cents; I am not sure when any of
this will end. This is why we will
continue to manage our budget
on a daily basis. If we cant
figure out a way to pay for it,
the right way, it will have to
wait.
2.) Unfortunately or fortunately, depends on how you want to

1.) Shamong's taxes remain one of the

lowest in all of New Jersey, and I am committed to keeping it that way. It's important to realize that the great majority of
our local taxes go to the county and
schools, nearly 96 percent of our taxes
are mandated and beyond our control. We
run Shamong Township on the small percentage remaining. With that said, I believe that we are all taxed too much, at
every level of government. Generally, I
believe that the problem is overspending,
1.) I've lived in Shamong Township for
20 years as of this month. For the large
majority of that time, Shamong had no
municipal tax. Those days are gone and
our taxes have been creeping up. Yet, our
township has been sitting on a surplus of
more than $1 million since at least 2009.
That's a lot of money for a town with a
total budget of $3 million, which includes
$380,000 in reserves for uncollected taxes.
I should point out that although there are
close to 30 vacant homes in Shamong, the

look at itwe have very little

open development land/new
home construction, available
within our township. For the
most part, one family moves
away, a new one moves in. With
that, our two best assets become
our biggest selling points: 1) The
Shamong Township/Lenape Regional School districts. When
families look to move into a new
area, the first thing they look at
is the quality of the school sys-

tem. We are always fortunate to be at the

top of this list in this category. 2) That
quiet country-community, feel that we
enjoy. However, were still close enough to
drive to the office, in Cherry Hill, the Walmart in Marlton or the action in Philly.
We have great places to play, the Wharton
State Forest, Atsion Lake and the Dingletown Sports Complex. And we are surrounded
by
people
who
truly
care about their neighbors and the town
in which they live its a pretty easy
sell.

not under-taxation. I will continue to work to bring new business

into our town so that we can
broaden our tax base and help
our residents taxes remain
constant, or dare I say, even reduced?
2.) We have one of the lowest
crime rates and we are one of the
safest towns in New Jersey. Our
EMS, State Police and volunteer
firefighters are first-class and re- MICHAEL DiCROCE

spond within minutes to any

emergency. Our school system
and teachers are excellent. Our
roads are snow cleared in the
winter and we now have a 10year road refurbishing program
underway. We have recently updated our ball fields, tennis
courts, new lights and play areas
for younger children, all from
grants without using local tax
dollars. Our neighbors care for

and respect each other and are responsible people without needing, or wanting,
unnecessary government intrusion into
their lives. Our horse farms, churches,
awesome restaurants, our winery,
Atsion Lake, Wharton State Forest, Historical Society and Native American
history make this a little "slice of heaven."
Soon, we will have a new revenue raising cemetery, so you can always stay in
Shamong!

mortgage companies will often

advance the taxes to retain their
position as a first lien holder. I
know this from 27 years of experience as a bankruptcy lawyer.
The reserve figure of $380,00 is
much too high. Realistically it
should be reduced 50 percent.
Our taxes were raised again this
year. I want to stop these increases and, carefully and cautiously,
JEANNETTE AMODEO
roll them back.

2.) New families are already

here and more are coming. Nine
families have moved into my
neighborhood during the past
year. Six of the homes had been
vacant. Seven of the families
have very young children. In fact
one is just 6-weeks-old. Children
are outside playing and riding
bikes. I dont think I've ever seen
so many people out walking
their dogs before. We live in a

great community. However, there is a

common thread with these property sales
(including the three that were occupied).
They sold for less than their assessed values. The assessments are not consistent,
even within neighborhoods.
This isn't the fault of our tax assessor.
There was too much pressure to reassess
our township too quickly.
Now it's a hardship for many folks, and
fixing the issue may help fill these vacant
homes.

... by teaming up with NAMI,"
said Seneca senior Ally Lardner,
vice president of the Seneca Psychology Club.
The past two years, the club organized the Glow Run in May, and
it was a huge success. This year
Psychology Club students wanted
to do something a little different
and asked Kennevan if they could
do something earlier in the fall so
they could come up with a haunted theme.
After doing a little research,
the club decided that going to the
V & V Adventure Farm would be
fun for all.
The Seneca Psychology Club
believes that holding events like
this can help reduce myths about
mental illness, educate others on
the facts about mental illness and
perhaps, most significantly, shed
a little light on the darkness and
replacing stigma with hope,
Kenneva said.

Boo!!

The Haunted Corn Maze Challenge is an 11-acre spider web designed corn maze. The challenge
is to make it through the maze,
and the first five to finish will receive prizes.
Along their journey, scary people may pop out from the cornfield to make the experience a little more frightening.
In addition, there will be a
NAMI tent set up for anyone to
talk with NAMI members and discuss how they can get involved.
All participants must arrive at
V & V Adventure Farm by 7 p.m.
with their flashlights ready. The
cost is $10 and includes the corn
maze challenge and then some
fun afterward that everyone can
enjoy such as hot chocolate, s'mores and a bonfire.
Other refreshments will be
sold by V & V Farm, which is located at 1339 Old Indian Mills

Road.
If you would like to donate, but
don't plan to participate in the
event, the Psychology Club will
accept checks payable to Seneca
High School; please put Psychology Club in the memo section. A
large portion of all proceeds will
be donated to NAMI.
All are invited to participate.
The Psychology Club hopes
everyone who comes to the event
becomes a little more aware
about mental illness and the need
for early intervention.
The club feels, through education and events such as this, people can help their community and
make everyone's life a little better.

New proposal would regulate marijuana like cigarettes

Richard Donnelly
ceo of newspaper media group

awmakers in New Jersey are

re-kindling talks to legalize
recreational marijuana. But

unlike proposals of the past, the latest

one courtesy Assemblyman Michael
Carroll would treat marijuana like
cigarettes instead of alcohol.
Carrolls proposal, which he proposed in late September, would regulate marijuana just like cigarettes.
People would have to be 19 years old to
purchase marijuana, and it could be
purchased, potentially, at local convenience stores.
In Carrolls own words to Politico:
To me, its already ubiquitous. Anybody who thinks this is somehow
going to increase the availability of
marijuana has never been 19. If thats

the case, then whats a big deal about

having it available at the local 7Eleven?
Such a proposal will likely get
strong resistance from other legislators. Not even states such as Colorado
and Washington, which have laws legalizing recreational marijuana use,
go as far as selling it at convenience
stores.
Most proposals that experts believe have a chance to pass here in
New Jersey regulate marijuana like

alcohol you have to be 21 to purchase, and its only available at specialty stores.
The discussion is probably pointless
for now, as Gov. Christie has repeatedly said he will veto any bill on his desk
regarding the legalization of recreational marijuana. So while hes still
in office until January 2018, its unlikely any proposal would pass.
We can argue the minute points of
Carrolls proposal, and other similar
ones, and while it may be all for
naught now, it will set the stage for
when the potential real fight for legalized recreational marijuana will
begin in 2018 or beyond, when a new
governor sits at the helm of our state
in Trenton.

Students, STEA to host Veterans Day breakfast

All military veterans of Shamong are invited to attend event on Nov. 4
On Friday, Nov. 4, the students of Indian
Mills School in conjunction with the Shamong Township Education Association
will be hosting a Veterans Day breakfast
from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the IMS cafeteria,
112 Indian Mills Road. All military veterans of Shamong, whether they have family
members attending IMS or not, are invited
to take part in this event in their honor.
This is an open invitation for our veterans
so our students can spend a little time
thanking them for their service and provide them an opportunity to share a special moment with friends and make some
new friends at the same time.

The townships education association is

supporting this event through its Project
Pride Program, an initiative that funds
projects to promote the exceptional spirit
and citizenship of schools and students.
Two of IMSs teachers, Kerry Haines and
Karen Clementi, are the catalysts for this
event as a way of thanking those who have
sacrificed through the years for our liberties. This is just one small way we can
show our pride for those in the township
who have worn the uniform in defense of
our country. In past years, students have
written letters to soldiers, sent cards and
letters to veterans homes, and had veter-

Local creepy clown

reports cause alarm
Burlington County Sheriff
Jean Stanfield issued a warning
recently regarding the recent nationwide creepy clown activity.
Recently, people in clown costumes committing illegal or suspicious acts have been reported
throughout the country, Stanfield said. Here in Burlington
County, schools and police departments have also begun to receive
both credible as well as false reports of similar behavior.
The Burlington Township
School District remained open despite receiving "creepy clown"
threats late Monday, Oct. 3.
These creepy clown reports
have caused alarm in communities nationwide and have been
frustrating for first responders,
as many of the reports have
proven to be hoaxes, Stanfield
said. Anyone who makes a false
claim will be held responsible.
While some may view this as a
prank, it is a serious offense that
wastes the time and valuable resources of our police departments. When you spread information that is known to be false and
causes public alarm, it is a crime.
What is particularly troubling
about this growing trend is that it
has become a means for cyberbullying. I ask of all our students
to remember that schools are a
place where everyone should feel
safe, and bullying at school or
from home over your computer
will not be tolerated.
The following information is
offered to assist the residents in
dealing with these situations:
At this time, there is no reason for panic or alarm as a result
of these reports. Some of the incidents reported have been legitimate; however the majority of re-

ported creepy clown incidents

have turned out to be pranks.
For those who see something
suspicious, say something. Report any suspicious activity to a
local police department.
Much of the alarm surrounding the creepy clowns has been
fueled by the internet, especially
social media. The sheriff asks the
public to remember that not
everything on social media is accurate and exercise restraint
when sharing or perpetuating information that may be troubling
or potentially illegal.
There appear to be two aspects to this phenomenon those
who actually dress in clown costumes to commit suspicious/illegal acts, and those who are reporting clown sightings as pranks
to try to cause alarm.
For those confronted with a
creepy clown or any suspicious
person, do not take matters into
ones own hands. Flee if possible
and attempt to contact law enforcement as soon as possible.
We are aware of the threats
that have been made and are taking the proper precautions to ensure Burlington County residents
are as safe as possible. The safety
and security of Burlington County residents is our top priority,
and we take any threat against
them seriously, Stanfield said.

Training required to volunteer

TRAINING
Continued from page 1
pointing, according to Onorato.
Relayed by Onorato, 2,453 requests were sent for donations for
the EMS brigade and only 445 donations were received. Donations
ranged from $3 to $500.
Having to subtract costs for
mailing, as the Indian Mills Volunteer Fire Co. uses a third-party
vendor to send the donation letters, it ended up reaping about
$15,000. According to Onorato, the
fire brigade usually does about
the same. However, the hope is
fire brigade donations will do
much better.
Onorato said the Indian Mills
Volunteer Fire Co. wanted the report of its results given to the
committee and the public in
hopes of raising awareness that
donations are needed.
Their first concern is getting
the word out to people to make donations to the EMS and fire
brigade and to remind the public
that twice a year they come out,
Onorato said.
The Indian Mills Volunteer
Fire Co. also has a second concern with manpower. According
to Onorato, volunteer EMTs and
firefighters are down throughout
the country, including volunteers
for the townships fire company
and EMS squad.
The Indian Mills Volunteer
Fire Co. needs some additional
volunteers and new blood, Onorato said.
To become an EMT in Shamong requires more than 200
hours of training at the cost of

just less than $1,000. For those

who put in the effort, especially
the youth, the company has
helped financially for training on
occasion. However, those younger
volunteers often go off to college
or move out of the township and
dont stay with the company.
Also, to become an officer,
there is additional mandatory
training required by the state. All
of the state requirements make it
hard to get volunteers, Onorato
said.
Theyre trying to find a way to
make things work, Onorato said.
Mayor Tim Gimbel agreed this
is not a great situation to be in,
but said right now there are no
answers. The hope is that relaying the report will get the word
out for donations or volunteers.
For those interested, tax-exempt donations can be mailed to
either Indian Mills Volunteer
Fire Co. or Shamong EMS at 48
Willow Grove Road, Shamong
08088.
For those interested in volunteering, visit the Indian Mills Volunteer Fire Co. and Shamong
EMS
website
at
indianmillsfire.com.
In other news:
Fawn Lake Village has had
seven extensions of licenses to
operate resolutions passed by the
committee over the past few
months. The primary item outstanding by the owners and operators remains the septic system
repair and maintenance, in accordance with an established timeline created in May. Failure to
maintain a sewage disposal system in good repair is a violation
of the township code.
The township engineer re-

ceived updated reports on Sept. 8

and Sept. 30, which provided specific updates as to the status of
septic systems, permits and construction timeframes, and the
original schedule called for submission of TWA permits for the
work to NJDEP by Sept. 16. However, the township was updated
that will not occur until approximately Oct. 15.
As Fawn Lake Village has
missed multiple deadlines, according to the timeline, the township committee previously advised that failure to adhere to the
schedule
provided
by
the
owner/operator could result in
further action by the municipality. Committee approved an extension of the license to Nov. 1. The
township will continue to monitor this process to ensure the required repairs and action items
are being undertaken on a timely
basis.
