Health, Hygiene, Education and Livelihood Improvement Program

A Progress Report
2015-16

Standing crops, with all efforts and investment of a farmer, fail due to lack of a critical
irrigation in the peak hours; career of a child spoils in absence of such critical support,
health / hygiene deteriorates without such critical inputs and livelihood of a family
could be improved with such critical intervention. Janakalyan, with the support of
GiveIndia, an online fundraising institution, has initiated an intervention in North
Karnataka to provide such critical support to the needy families to improve their health,
hygiene, education and livelihood status. There are 4 DO (Donation Option) through
which GiveIndia raises funds for the target groups of Janakalyan. These DOs are
narrated below in brief.
Reaching the Unreached
DO-1: Present an Education Kit to a poor child / youth of north Karnataka:
There are many children in villages who could not puchase the required school
stationaries due to poverty at home. The uniform, text books and mid-day meal is
available in the government schools but who should provide them with the necessary
note books, pen, pencils, geometry box, water bottle, bag and such other necessities?
There are many children who drop out of the education system when teachers
pressurises for these stationaries. Janakalyan identifies such deserving children and
provide them with an education kit containing all these items. During 2015-16,
Janakalyan with the support of GiveIndia has helped many children of North Karnataka
as presented in the table below.
Beti Bachao Beti Padao
DO-2: Help build a career of a child/youth from a displaced familly of Bengali refugees
rehabilitated in India after partition:
More than 20000 refugees are residing in Sindhanur taluk of Raichur district; their only
source of income is 4-5 acres of land provided by Government of India 45 years back. Per
capita land availability has reduced while the yield per acre has gone down to any
extent. Many families live in hand to mouth situation. Further, they do not fall under any
protective reservation in Karnataka. The children are generally sent to schools and after
matriculation engage them in driving/ construction works while the girls are married at
the age of 14-15 years. Lack of transportation, lack of hostel facility, security to the girls,
etc. are some of the reasons for dropping out while the important being poverty.
Janakalyan identifies such children/youth from refugee communities and help them with
Rs.2000 stipend to pursue their college education at least till they become 18 years old.
During 2015-16, Janakalyan has supported many children/ youth with the support of
GiveIndia as presented in the table below.

Swacch Bharat Mission

DO-3: Give a hygiene kit (Starter kit) to a family and help improve their health and
sanitation condition:
Hygienic condition is gateway to healthy families and most of the rural families fail to
procure hygiene materials. This leads to ill health which causes more expenses for
medicine/treatment and thus family become poort. The vicious cycle continues. But if
such families taste its benefits, they will never leave the practice. With this objective,
Janakalyan planned to provide with a starter kit to start hygienic practices in the house
with the support of GiveIndia. The kit contains soap, surf, toilet brush, cleanin agents,
scrubber, utensil cleaning cake, detergent cake, buckets, mugs, etc. Janakalyan has
supported about many families during 2015-16 with GiveIndia support.
Rural Skill Improvement
DO-4: Provide an agricultural or artisan tool kit and improve livelihood security of a
family:
Instead of providing fish, teach how to fish is the idea behind this intervention. We
identify the deserving families, who need a critical support in terms of sewing machine,
agricultural equipments, blacksmith kit, carpenter kit, washer-man kit, or such other
traditional artisan kits so that they start earning from very next day. Janakalyan has
helped about many families during 2015-16 with GiveIndia support.

MDO: Help prevent child marriage/ labor through post-metric education:
Most of the girls and many boys from rehabilitation colonies drop their education after
completion of matriculation from village schools due to various factors and become
victims of child marriage/labor. The deadly consequences of child marriage are infant
mortality, maternal mortality, underweight birth, malnourished child, family problems,
suicide, divorce, etc. To address this, Janakalyan with the support of GiveIndia, initiated
an intervention to support these victims with monthly donation support to continue
their post metric education.
Overall, the following individuals/ families are supported since inception of the program
with the support of GiveIndia under different DOs.
