READING

are true or false. Put a tick () in the appropriate box. Then write next to it the number of
the paragraph where you found the necessary information. One example is given.

The magic world of crystal

1. Pioneers are always way ahead of their time and in their fantasies they create the impossible.
One such man was Daniel Swarovski. At the end of the 19th century, Swarovski founded a
company which invented an automatic cutting machine. As this was the first time crystals could
be cut automatically, the company soon became known all over the world. Swarovskis
necklaces, pins and earrings have become universally popular and his crystal beads decorate
dresses, shoes and handbags. Today this fascinating material is widely used in high fashion and
even in James Bond movies.
2. Swarovski crystals, made from the finest crystal lead glass, are cut and ground with such
precision that they sparkle as brilliantly as diamonds. The lightness and brightness of these beads
set them apart from more common beads but they are not diamonds either. The crystal glass that
Swarovski uses to cut his beads has a high lead content and this produces a more diamond-like
effect.
3. In 1995 the company built a spectacular theme park to celebrate its 100th anniversary.
Designed by the artist Andr Heller, the park is called Swarovski Crystal Worlds and is located
near Innsbruck in Austria. Millions of visitors from all corners of the globe have been amazed at
the exceptional waterworks, the labyrinth and the spectacular lighting of the Crystal Worlds.
Another major attraction is a museum which houses a collection of sparkling crystals and in front
of which is an enormous fountain called the Giant.
4. It was originally intended that Swarovski Crystal Worlds would be a temporary park-museum
but at the architects suggestion it was turned into a permanent outdoor museum. In 2003, the
Crystal Worlds underwent a few structural changes which added more parking space to
accommodate the increasingly large number of visitors. And these changes proved to be timely
since, in 2004, Swarovski Crystal Worlds was visited by a record number of visitors.
5. Andreas Braun, who has been the managing director of the Crystal Worlds since 1994, sums
up the significance of the park for the Swarovski companys development: The Swarovski
group has turned from a purely Business to Business oriented company at the beginning into a
Culture to Consumer company. At the Crystal Worlds you can experience how fantasy and
technology can turn an ordinary crystal into an amazing and extraordinary stone.
6. Every corner of Swarovski Crystal Worlds is breathtaking and unforgettable. It has a blue
entrance hall, thirteen Chambers of Wonder, a caf, a restaurant, a VIP lounge for Swarovski
collectors, an area for special exhibits and the worlds largest Swarovski Shop, where you dont
need to buy a ticket to enter. Andr Hellers green labyrinth, located inside the park, has been
magically attracting visitors from the very start. Since spring 2005, there has been a special hall
where kids can create their own works of art. The area surrounding the park serves both as a
playground and as an exhibition space for sculptors who do not belong to the company.

10

Ex. The largest Swarovski shop is located in the Crystal Worlds.

4.

The Crystal Worlds was reorganized at the beginning of the 21st

century.
The Crystal Worlds park was built to celebrate Daniel
Swarovskis 100th birthday.
Swarovski company owes its success to the invention of a new
type of a machine.
Children work with their imagination in the parks special hall.

5.

The Swarovski group remains to be strictly business oriented.

6.

The highest number of visitors to the park was recorded in

2004.

7.

Swarovski crystal beads are a type of diamond.

I attended Professor Whites lecture yesterday and I found out a lot of interesting
things about the first settlers (0) in America, or the New World as they called it.
You did? I was sick with a temperature yesterday so I missed it. Pity I couldnt be
there. He always tells some good stories (1) in his lectures.
Yeah. I had no idea that the early settlers, especially those from England, didnt
think they would face difficulties and dangers when they got to the New World
(2). In fact, the winters were terrible and theyd never have survived if it hadnt
been for the help they got from friendly Indians (3).
You mean they expected to find brick houses and neat gardens?
Well, may be not, but their new life was nothing like what the Spanish explorers
(4) had reported. They painted a very colourful picture of life in the New World forests full of wild animals, rivers full of gold. The problem for the English
settlers was that life in England (5) had been simpler. When they arrived in
America, they knew nothing about planting crops, hunting, building mud houses,
or making clothing from animal skins (6).
I see, so I suppose the Indians taught them all this?
Yes, of course they did.
That was generous of them, considering that all the English wanted was to take
their lands (7) from them, didnt they?
Well, I suppose so. Although initially there was no shortage of land - there was
enough for everybody (8). And dont forget, the settlers brought iron tools for
working on the land and guns for hunting, and the Indians found these very
interesting (9) And they also brought some of their domestic animals with them.
In exchange for these new things, the Indians taught them how to build canoes for
transporting things by water and how to make snowshoes (10) for getting around
in winter.
And Ive heard that beans (11) were something new for the English and they only
discovered them when they went to America. Strange really, when you think that
we all eat them nowadays. Theyre part of our usual diet.
Thats right. Oh and I forgot their first problem - getting there! The voyage lasted
for months and the settlers had to overcome lots of hardships while crossing the
ocean (12).
Sounds really interesting. I will definitely come to Professor Whites lecture next
time.

Task 2
Speaker One
I got to know Irakli when we were at the Academy of Arts in Tbilisi and afterwards you could
say we were fairly inseparable. We spent a great deal of time together and we even shared the
same studio. And when he was taken to the hospital I looked after him day and night. Some art
critics say that my paintings have similarities with Iraklis and I suppose its inevitable that he
had some influence on me. After all, I was part of Iraklis creative process, and he was part of
mine.
Speaker 2
The first portrait that Irakli painted of me was in 1981. Im especially fond of this portrait
because it clearly shows how I was feeling at the time. It took him several hours to do the picture
and he gave it to me as a Christmas gift. In fact he enjoyed giving away his paintings to
people. He was truly a peoples artist and many of his works are scattered among his admirers. I
think he was a very sensual man, very spiritual too, and he could see far beyond everyday reality.
Speaker 3
Id like to talk about one of Iraklis more remarkable exhibitions. This one was in Paris and it
was a very important exhibition for him. The venue was not an art gallery, but a church at
the Sorbonne University. The French Foreign Minister came to the opening and there were lots
of Georgian emigrants and French people present. It was a great honour to exhibit at the
Sorbonne church; not all artists are allowed to display their paintings there.
Speaker 4
Im often asked why I decided to be a painter and I can see no explanation for it. In fact, I had no
other choice. Being Iraklis daughter, the surroundings I was brought up in consisted largely of a
studio, brushes, paints and my dad using all these in his work. I dont think of painting as my
profession, it is my way of life, what I use to express myself, something like oxygen that I cant
live without. And I still have so many fond memories of my dad working in his studio.
