Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College

Physical Education Program - Lesson Plan Template
Teacher: Boulina (Soon) Rasavong
Grade(s): 7-8th

NASPE Content Standard(s) targeted (LIST ONLY THOSE YOU TARGET IN THE
LESSON):
o S2.M10:

Uses a variety of shots (e.g., slap & run, bunt, line drive, high arc) to hit to
open space

Identifies sacrifice situations and attempts to advance a teammate.

o S2.M1:

Reduces open space by using loco motor movements (e.g., walking,

running, jumping & landing, changing size and shape of body) in
combination with movement concepts (e.g., reducing the angle in space,
reducing the angle in the space, reducing distance between player and
goal).

8 - Opens and closes space during small-sided game play by combining

loco motor movements with movement concepts.

o S1.M4:

Passes and receives with feet in combination with loco motor patterns of
running and change of direction and speed with competency in modified
invasion games such as soccer or speedball.

Passes and receives with an implement in combination with loco motor

patterns of running and change of direction, speed, and/or level with
competency in modified invasion games, such as lacrosse or hockey.

ELL Content Standard(s) targeted:

o ELL Stage IV (Grades 6-8 [Listening & Speaking]):

A student at this level is able to comprehend information shared in social and

academic conversations. The student initiates and responds to conversations
using expanded vocabulary in varied sentence structures. Minimal errors in
phonology and syntax may impede the production of language.

Lesson Objectives (Explicit, observable): By the end of the lesson students will be able to ...
and/or understand
1) The students will be able to demonstrate and articulate orally the fundamentals of kicking using
academic vocabulary.

2) The students will be able to demonstrate and articulate orally the fundamentals of base running
using academic vocabulary.
3) The students will be able to demonstrate and articulate orally the fundamentals of catching using
academic vocabulary.

Organization Student (individual, partners, 3's, groups of?):

The class will be separated into two teams. Everybody gets a turn to kick before flipping
fields.
Formal Assessment/Evidence of Mastery (Include a variety of methods of checking for
understanding & creating a record of student performance): (REMEMBER THAT FORMAL
MEANS YOU END UP WITH A PERMANENT RECORD OF STUDENT PREFORMANCE T
LESSONS END!

As we circulate we will ask students regarding the motions of catching, kicking, and base
running. To be correct, the students must answer with techniques explained during
introduction of lessons.

Check for assessment through observation of catching, kicking, and running bases.
o If students are struggling, students are requested to demonstrate physically and
articulate orally the fundamentals using academic vocabulary.

Key vocabulary targeted: (CCR)

Lead foot
Trail foot
Cradle or Basket
T-form
Stealing
Eye contact

Needed equipment and Set-up:

Baseball field
Kick-ball
Bases
Pictures (example of kicking, catching,
and base running)

WHAT WILL YOU DO TO ENCOURAGE PA BEYOND THE LESSON?

Encourage kids to practice at home or recess. Find friends and have practices applying
motions of kicking, catching, and base-running relative to the game of kickball.

The weather is nice out for kickball, so find friends to practice the skills of kickball and
perhaps have a game too.

Watch baseball games, the concepts and principles are very similar to kickball.

CLASS MANAGEMENT:
Student grouping mgmt.:

Students will remain in their original groups as assigned by teacher.

Teams will be created by a random selection process.

Equipment mgmt.:
All equipment will be placed at its designated areas by instructor.
Mgmt. routines:
Warm up with dynamic stretches in assigned groups.
Behavior mgmt.:
Public praise
Silent warning of deviant behavior (only when others are not watching and engaged in an
activity)
Break from activity after silent warning.
Follow up with deviant student on a 1-to-1 basis after class and discuss issue.
CONTENT SEQUENCE:
Opening/Anticipatory Set: (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to
real life)
Today we will work on the fundamentals of catching, kicking, and base running so we can
play the game of kick ball. Can anyone tell me any key words about motions that relate to
kick ball? Has anyone played and can share their experience?
Introductory Activity/Warm-up segment:
Walking groin stretches.
Walking hamstring stretches.
Walking hip stretches.
Walking quad stretches.
Walking calf stretches.
Open stride lateral jog within a short distance.
Skill Development content - Include Critical Elements, Teaching Cues, and Common Errors you
will likely need to address:

Prior to all skill development lessons:

Teachers will demonstrate the PAIR/CHECK/PERFORM technique, which is a technique for

partners to demonstrate skills and be critiqued by each other, following key words and
teaching cues.

Students will pair up and SHARE/DISCUSS partner expectations, which is a technique

where partners verbally explain/describe lesson objectives with the use of keywords and
teaching cues. Students will follow up with the PAIR/CHECK/PERFORM technique (same
as above).

Teachers will demonstrate the skills of Kicking, Catching, and Base Running prior to all
independent student practices.
o For Example: Kicking- ball will be placed near instructor, pictures of athletes to
increase memory of keywords and teaching cues will accompany demonstration of
the following teaching cues:
1. Maintain eye contact with the ball at all times as the ball approaches your

space.
2. Once the ball is in close distance enough to make contact with your foot,
continue to maintain eye contact with head down and do the following:
a. Take one step with a lead foot.
b. Both arms out in a T-formation for improved balance and posture.
c. Kick ball with trail leg with the in-seam of foot and toes pointed down
and leg fully extended in up-ward motion.

The following steps will be techniques for Kicking:

o Maintaining eye contact with the ball.
o The motion of kicking.
1. Step with lead food
2. Both arms out in T-formation for balance and posture.
3. Kicking ball with trail leg with the in-seam of foot and toes pointed down.

The following steps will be techniques for Base Running:

o Base runner(s) may lead-off, away from bag.
o Base runner(s) must tag-up after a defense catches ball.
o Return and touch the base runner occupied before advancing base.

The following steps will be techniques for Catching:

o Maintain eye contact with ball.
o Establish a strong base with feet apart and knees bent.
o Cradle or basket catches:
o Maintain good base and have arms forearms parallel to each other with fingers
spread.
o Once engaged with ball, fall in direction of ball to avoid the ball bouncing out.
o Hands-only catch:
1. Fingers spread with thumbs and pointer fingers slightly touching forming a
diamond
o Teachers will informally assess through observation throughout the activity area
during independent practices.

Game Content- Include Rule Modifications and progression, rules:

Applying individual and team skills in the game of kickball.
Feedback Statements: (specific positive and corrective)
(Positive): Good job making contact with in-seam of your foot when you kick the ball.

(Corrective): Good job kicking with the in-seam of your foot; lets try the T-form to
improve your balance and increase the chances of a more effective kick.

Closure/Lesson Summary:

By raising your hand, can anyone talk me through the motions of the different skills in
kickball?

By raising your hand, can anyone tell me what was challenging during the different skills
and what can we do to improve from those challenges?

Lesson Extension:

Follow some baseball events on TV and observe the athletes techniques.
