Indian aggression threat to region: Sharif

ISLAMABAD, Sept 30:
Terming Indian aggression
as a threat to the entire region, Prime Minister Nawaz
Sharif today warned that Pakistan is also capable of executing surgical strikes and will not
allow anyone to cast an evil
eye on it.
Chairing a special Cabinet
meeting to review the security situation in the country,
Sharif said that Pakistan will

take all necessary steps to protect its people and territorial

integrity in case of any aggression or violation of the Line of
Control (LoC).
He said that Indian aggression constituted a threat to the
entire region and Pakistan
would take all measures to protect its territorial integrity, The
Express Tribune reported.
No one will be allowed to
cast an evil eye on Pakistan,

Sharif said, adding that Pakistan was fully capable of executing surgical strikes... The
nation is standing shoulder-toshoulder with the valiant
armed forces to defend the
motherland.
His comments came a day
after India conducted surgical
strikes on seven terror launch
pads across the LoC with the
Army inflicting significant
casualties on terrorists pre-

paring to infiltrate from PoK.

Pakistan has dismissed as
fabrication of truth Indias
claim and termed it as a quest
by India to create media hype
by rebranding cross-border fire
as surgical strike.
Sharif said that all steps
would be taken to prevent LoC
violations or aggression and
added that Pakistans resolve
to establish peace remained
strong. He said the leadership
and people of Pakistan are united in their resolve to counter
any aggressive Indian designs,
adding that Pakistans commitment for peace must not be
construed as weakness.
Sharif also raised Kashmir

North East Students Organisation (NESO), an umbrella
organisation of student bodies
of the region, has opposed the
Citizenship (Amendment) Bill
2016 in its entirety, arguing that
the region would not take additional burden of illegal migrants
belonging to any religion.
The organisation today also
asked the Union Government
to take up the issue of adequate
protection to religious minorities within Bangladesh, with
the neighbouring country.
Addressing the media here,
NESO advisor Samujjal Bhattacharyya said that since Prime
Minister Narendra Modi has
praised Bangladesh for its
good governance and it is also
a friendly country for India, the
Centre should ask Bangladesh
to ensure the safety and security of the people facing religious persecution there.
Bhattacharyya also rapped
the political parties of the State
for not putting up a united front
against the Bill, which he said
would pose a threat to the existence of indigenous people in
Assam and the Northeast.
NESO has written to Dr

rejecting the Indian claims of
carrying out surgical strikes,

6 THE ASSAM TRIBUNE, GUWAHATI

MESSAGE FOR TODAY
Courage in danger is half the battle won.
PLAUTUS

Proper perspective
The retaliatory action taken by the Indian Army within
Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, in which 6 terror camps were
destroyed and 35 terrorists killed, has to be seen in a
proper perspective. First, given the anti-Pakistan hysteria roused in the nation after the cowardly and brutal attack on an Army camp at Uri, resulting in the death of 19
jawans, the possibility of retaliatory action was always on
the anvil. While politicians of all hues, and segments of
the national media, were baying for blood, the Army in a
low profile statement had asserted that it would punish
the guilty at a time and manner of its own choosing. Obviously, the anti-terrorist operation just launched was a telling illustration of this assertion. Secondly, contrary to what
the back-slappers of the ruling regime might claim, this
was not the first time that the Indian Army had exacted
reprisal for the killing of comrades. There had been similar
forays before, the only difference being that the NDA Government has taken pains to well publicise the latest one.
Thirdly, the Indian Army had crossed other borders for
instance, the India-Myanmar border during anti-insurgency operations though these have not received similar
publicity because of the paucity of political mileage. Moreover, the India-Pakistan border is in a state of perpetual
volatility, so the latest intrusion must be viewed as yet
another episode of a seemingly never-ending narrative.
The danger of seeing something more in the incident
is obvious, for any tit-for-tat, confrontation posture resulting in escalation would be self-defeating for both the countries. India needs to play down, rather than play up, the
incident, for a lesson has been well taught, one that hopefully has conveyed the warning that India would not tolerate or forgive the killing of her jawans. Significantly,
while Pakistans politicians have condemned what they
term as unprovoked and naked aggression, the Pakistan Army has been on a denial mode, stating that there
was no intrusion by India and it was simply a case of firing
by Indian troops which was strongly and befittingly responded by Pakistani troops. Equally significantly, though
there is largescale mobilisation of troops and evacuation
of civilians along the border, neither side has officially
repudiated the ceasefire inked in 2003. The USA,
briefed on the nature of the incident, has backed Indias
endeavour at combating cross-border terrorism she
needs to be persuaded to arm-twist Pakistan into restraint.
At the moment China, saddled with her own economic
compulsions, is amenable to keep her nose out of a tussle
that cannot be said to be her concern. Prudence on the
part of both nations and the opening out of diplomatic
channels will prevent any escalation and lead to the kind
of hostilities that will prove to be a distraction in their
mutual efforts at fighting poverty.

Pachyderms in peril
Even as the Indian elephant continues to be on a slippery
ground owing to largescale habitat destruction, accidental fatalities such as train hits and electrocution continue to extract a
heavy toll on the magnificent animal. The latest such incident
in which a mother and her calf were killed by the Rajdhani
Express near Dimapur goes to show how human negligence
and insensitiveness have combined to give a deadly blow to
long-term conservation prospects of this living heritage of the
country. It is shocking that the train was speeding at 100 kmph
along a stretch of known elephant corridor when the accident
occurred. This is all the more deplorable given that the stretch
in question was barely 800 metres, and slowing down the train
would have definitely prevented the tragedy. The recurring
nature of this disquieting phenomenon exemplifies that we are
yet to accord due priority on securing the right to live of our wild
denizens. Following a number of train accident-induced elephant fatalities, the Forest Department, WTI and NF Railway
had made arrangements for intensified vigil along forested
tracks, with 16 areas of the State having elephant corridors
identified for the purpose. Apparently, as the elephant deaths
would testify to, the mandated mechanism of slowing down
trains and providing prior warning about elephant movement
on or near the tracks is not being adhered to. The Railway
authorities and the Forest Department in particular need to
take serious note of the developments and ensure greater
coordination in the implementation of the precautions necessary for preempting such tragedies. The Railway authorities
would also do well to construct elevated tracks stretching along
the vulnerable portion used by elephants.
It is a sad irony that the elephant is being pushed to the
brink in what is regarded as one of its last bastions. The
raging man-elephant conflict -- among the gravest conservation challenges confronting the State has shown
little signs of abatement with fatalities mounting on either
side. The developments are fraught with ominous portents for the regions plummeting elephant population.
Despite all the hue and cry, unfortunately, little practical
intervention has gone towards protecting elephant habitat and corridors something that ought to have been the
single-most important priority for the authorities. Rampant destruction of forests going on under the very nose
of the Forest Department and the State Government has
been fuelling the man-elephant conflict. Forests that once
constituted ideal elephant habitat now lie either totally
destroyed or highly degraded and fragmented due to
widespread tree-felling and encroachment. The few remaining elephant corridors are being annihilated to accommodate our so-called development. The situation
exposes the hypocrisy of the Government which asserts
about protecting elephants while doing nothing to prevent destruction and degradation of elephant habitat.
Unless the Governments actions go beyond meaningless ritualistic exercises like holding of elephant festivals, the future of this heritage is doomed.

The American nightmare

t this precise moment,

the international community is staring at the
prospect of the so
called American Dream turning
into an American Nightmare!
The protagonist behind the possibility of such a transition is a selffunding, maverick, wannabe President named Donald Trump. When
he first announced his candidacy for
Republican nomination, practically
no one had given this brash, loud
mouthed creator of the reality TV
show The Apprentice the ghost
of a chance. Yet here he is now, on
the threshold of a possible victory,
riding on a wave of disillusionment
of White working class and a segment of the younger generation
with the policies of President
Barack Obama.
Almost eight years back, when
Barack Obama was elected US
President, the international community had assumed that Americans had matured enough to overcome sectarian prejudices and
elect the first African-American
President. Yet Obamas election
and his liberal agenda seem to have
touched a raw nerve amongst a section of White Americans, leading to
right wing counter-movements
such as that of the Tea Party. Also,
Obama had been blamed by a swath
of the middle and working classes
for loss of jobs for Americans, lowering of pay, as well as general debilitation of the economy.
Public memory being proverbially short, these segments had conveniently forgotten the crisis that had
gripped America throughout the 8year-long tenure of Republican President George W Bush, who with his
gung ho attitude had plunged America into two needless and costly wars.

and young voters see the Democrat nominee as representing the
Washington establishment with
connections to powerful corporate
and political figures. They fear that
if she is elected, crony-capitalists
might have a field day and there
would be a disruption of the social
welfare measures initiated by her
predecessor Barack Obama. While
she was the US Secretary of States,
the Clinton Foundation received
sizeable donations from her acquaintances, which raises suspicion
that there was quid pro quo involved. Hilary is also not very likeable; while actions such as her using a personal email account for
sending classified official correspondence poses a question mark
on her reliability.
These and other factors have
neutralised the lead in opinion polls
which Hillary had earlier enjoyed
and currently both are running neck
and neck, with Trump even having
a slight edge in certain key States,
thereby enhancing the chances of
what the international community
perceives to be a nightmare from
occurring. Time and again, Trump
has taken advantage of the shortness of public memory to keep
changing stances, thereby proving
that it would be a disaster if he is
placed at the helm of arguably the
most powerful nation in the world
whose consumer market defines
how economies of many other nations are managed.
Trumps rise has also coincided
with the prospective renewal of the
Cold War between the West and
Russia, with a country like Syria becoming a victim of the rivalry. That
the temperamentally volatile Trump
will be the man who controls the
nuclear button is a fearful thought
indeed. One can only hope that the
American voters are able to put the
global good above personal prejudices and prevent the nightmare from
being enacted in real life.

On graceful ageing
Prof (Dr) Anku Moni Saikia

ince 1991, each year

October 1 has been observed globally as the
International Day of
Older Persons. The United Nations General Assembly voted to
establish this day in 1990. The objective of this celebration is to raise
awareness about issues affecting
the elderly as it has been realised
that understanding about the whole
process of ageing is very much crucial for aging gracefully. A theme
has been selected every year to
focus attention of the society towards that issue. Take a Stand
Against Ageism has been chosen
as the theme to commemorate this
year to reinforce the stand against
ageism. The ageing population has
been increasing day by day and this
global phenomenon has affected India too. According to estimates, by
2050, one out of every five will be
60+ and by 2150 AD, one out of
every three will be 60+ in the
worlds population. In India, the
older persons who are 60 years and
above represent 8.1%(2010 census) of the total population and is
projected to reach 12% by 2031
and 17% by 2051. The oldest (80+)
among the older in India are expected to grow faster than any other age group in the population. We

Letters
to the

EDITOR
Sir, We are passing through an
alarming phase, when a large
section of students in Assam
cannot write or speak in Assamese
correctly. However, the Jatiya
Vidyalayas are playing a pioneering
role in safeguarding the interests of
the Assamese people and culture.
It is noteworthy that during the
course of their immense contribution to school education across
Assam, the Jatiya Vidyalayas have
always preferred the vernacular
medium of instruction.
We hope the Assam Government will reward schools (both
government-run and private
sector) which perform well and
produce good results by imparting quality education while
maintaining their social responsibility and commitment towards
the State. The Government

have been successful in adding

years to life, and now, we need to
help them in adding life to years.
Ageism or age prejudices very
much exists in every nook and corner of the society. Knowingly or
unknowingly, we do consider our
elders as a separate and homogenous entity. They are often treated
differently considering that they
are weak, inefficient, dependant
and unproductive. These negative
characteristics may be true for
some older people, but not for all.
We often fail to understand the contribution and productivity of our
elders as only paid work counts as
productive, which is a very wrong
way of measuring productivity.
Older people contribute to the society in a range of ways. Older
adults are often considered incapable of learning new things or adopting new behaviour. Of course, because of physiological changes that
occur with ageing, they may take a
little more time to learn or adopt
new things. While all people need
to cope with this adoption of changing roles in the family and community, some derogatory vocabulary
is often used to describe our
elders. It affects the self-esteem
and self-confidence of our seniors,
who have contributed so much to

the society in various ways. If

elders are not able to take care of
themselves, and if they lose autonomy and independence, then
their quality of life will be seriously compromised. Because of negative attitude and perception that
prevails in the society, elders become easy prey of abuse and neglect. The elderly should be considered as resources because of
their long experiences, knowledge
and its practical implications. It is
high time to change the mindset,
otherwise active and graceful ageing will never be a reality.
Lack of awareness and knowledge on ageing leads to this kind of
prejudice. Growing old is a natural
process. Some may feel positive
about it; some may feel anxious,
whereas others may have mixed
feelings. It is observed that the elderly sometimes assume that they
have physical impairment or incapability or memory or intellectual
impairment due to their age. They
are at times pre-occupied with
death. Sometimes, even physicians
attribute diseases to old age. This
is why many illnesses or symptoms
often go under-reported, unnoticed
or unrecognised and hence untreated. This leads to various kinds of
disease and disability. Everyone
needs to understand that older people get sick from disease, not from

old age. However, cultural values

and traditions also determine how
the society views older people and
how older people view themselves
Firstly, elders need to change
their mindset and cast off the traditional view of aging which has been
described as a continuous process
of decline. For active and graceful
aging, the elderly must be healthy
as well as productive. Health and
productivity in old age depends on
a variety of factors. Different health
promotional activities should continue even in old age. One of the
myths of aging is that it is too late to
adopt healthy behaviour. On the contrary, engaging in appropriate physical activity, avoiding addiction, eating healthy with judicious use of
medications can prevent many diseases. Physical activity is the single-most significant means whereby individuals can influence their
own health and maintain a high quality of life into old age. Age is not an
obstacle to physical activity. Although no amount of physical activity can stop the ageing process, but
it can minimise the physiological
effects of sedentary lifestyles and
can prevent development and progression of chronic diseases.
Secondly, elders should be
aware of their rights, services and
privileges. We all need to understand
that we all will go through this proc-

ess. Inclusion of the phenomenon in

the curriculum will surely help to
prevent plantation of the seeds of
ageism. Positive and healthy values
need to be instilled early.
To prevent ageism, training of
healthcare providers is crucial. We
need a pool of physicians, paramedical staff to cater the growing needs.
Several factors contribute to the
discrimination in the healthcare system. Age discrimination in healthcare settings can result in undertreatment or over-treatment. It
must be realised that chronological
age is not an important determinant of health of the elderly. Universal access to different social security schemes is a much-needed
step to prevent age discrimination.
Unless the elders become financially
and functionally independent, active
life will only be a dream.
Increasing opportunities for participation improves status of elderly in the society.
Media has a great role to play in
shaping the minds of young people
by building positive images of older persons. It is high time to fight
against this social disease. It may
perhaps be apt to conclude with
Katharine Grahams quote: No one
can avoid aging, but aging productively is something different.
(Published on the occasion of
International Day of Older Persons)

Due recognition to Jatiya Vidyalayas

should therefore patronise the
Jatiya Vidyalayas, which is leading
the way for promoting Assamese
language among the students of
the State at the school level.
Local MLAs too need to give
the required push, while a survey
should be carried out for schools
belonging to both the Government and private sectors. Instead
of rewarding one school for
producing a topper, comprehensive plans to support institutions
which have been rendering
valuable service over the years
should be considered.
Without proper recognition, a
number of private schools which
have put in commendable effort
towards development of education, may feel that their efforts
have been in vain. A large
number of Jatiya Vidyalayas are
working hard for the growth of
Assamese language, literature,
culture, sports, art and craft
without any Government

assistance whatsoever.
The Government has to
ensure that these institutions are
brought under the purview of
development schemes to ensure
survival of Assamese culture.

Public resentment
Sir, Through the columns of
your esteemed Daily, I would like
to draw the attention of conscious
citizens and the authorities
concerned towards the SBI, PBB,
Chowkidinghee branch, Dibrugarh,
located at the ASTC complex. The
aforementioned bank started their
business 2-3 years back and since
then has been rendering service to
the customers of the locality with
full satisfaction. Senior citizens find
themselves very comfortable as
the atmosphere of the bank is very
congenial and the existing manager
is very customer-friendly. Other
office staff are also helpful, though
it is a pity that entry through the

staircase upto the first floor, where

the ASTC canteen is located, is
very filthy, which can be realised
only when one visits the bank
branch. While public resentment
over the issue is growing with
every passing day, may we request
the authority concerned to take
immediate action to ensure a
dignified ambience for the
customers while approaching the
bank. Yours etc., JAGADISH
BISWAS, Dibrugarh.

Poor network
Sir, Cell phone service quality is
deteriorating day by day. Nothing
can be heard properly while
communicating. Phone calls cannot
be connected. Cell phones replaced
landline service due to poor
connectivity of landline phones. We
have already damaged the
environment by high frequency cell

Eviction at Kaziranga
Sir, The recent eviction drive
at Kaziranga and its adjoining areas
has been welcomed by all rightthinking people. However, though
the action was much delayed,
nevertheless the new Government has taken a firm decision on
vacating the forest land from the
clutches of the encroachers. It is a
pragmatic decision taken by the
Government as the green cover
has reduced markedly over the
years. It is well-known that
reduction of forest cover will
adversely affect human habitation
too. Yours etc., DR HARENDRA
NATH PATHAK, Golaghat.

Guwahati star struck on ISL eve

THE ASSAM TRIBUNE, GUWAHATI 7

Mahalaya observed
STAFF REPORTER

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 30: To

recognise the North-easts
immense contribution to football, the opening ceremony of
the Hero Indian Super League
(ISL) will celebrate the cultural
diversity and spirit of the eight
northeastern States Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram,
Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim.
The North-east region has
consistently groomed talented football professionals who
have represented some of the
biggest clubs in the country as
well as the national team.
NorthEast United owner
John Abraham today accompa-

nied ISL founder and chairperson Nita Ambani to Guwahati

ahead of the much-awaited
opening ceremony.
Abhishek Bachchan, Alia
Bhatt, Jacqueline Fernandes
and Varun Dhawan too also
landed in the city today with
the latter three slated to put
up a spectacular performance.
Mumbai City FC owner
Ranbir Kapoor, Kerala Blasters FC owner Sachin Tendulkar and Chennaiyin FC owner MS Dhoni will be reaching
the city tomorrow.
The opening ceremony will
have a local North-east flavour
with the famed Shillong Chamber Choir, which has enthralled audiences across the

globe, slated to perform. The

scintillating ceremony will see
over 500 artistes and drummers from the North-east
come together to perform
amidst a spectacular show, an
organizing official said.
Indias only Olympic silver
medallist PV Sindhu who
brought glory to India at the
Summer Olympics 2016 is the
star attraction at the grand
sports event.
Bollywood stars Alia Bhatt,
Jacqueline Fernandes and Varun Dhawan have been putting
in long hours into the intense
practice sessions for the opening ceremony act which promises to be a cracker of a performance.

Gates to Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium will open at 3

pm, with the spectacular starstudded opening ceremony
featuring Bollywood stars to
commence at 5:30 pm.
One can catch the opening
ceremony on Star Sports 1,
Star Sports HD1, Star Sports
2, Star Sports HD2, Star Gold,
Star Gold HD, Star Jalsha
Movies, Star Jalsha Movies
HD, Asia Net Movies, Vijay
Super and Hot Star (deferred
live) from 6:15pm.
The first match of Hero ISL
between home side NorthEast
United FC and Kerala Blasters FC will kick-off at 7 pm
sharp. The two teams missed
out on qualification to the
semi-finals of the league and
they will be looking to go that
extra mile this year.
North East United FC owner John Abraham does not believe in superstitions but he
will surely love to know the
fate of teams who host opening ceremonies in the Hero
Indian Super League (ISL).
When Atletico de Kolkata
hosted the opening match in
the inaugural ISL in 2014, they
ended up finishing as the ultimate champions, while Chennaiyin FC emerged winners of
the second edition of ISL after
hosting the opening match in
Chennai. Quite a coincidence!
This year, the special honour of hosting the opening
match has been bestowed
upon NorthEast United, and
previous trends suggest the
region, along with the owner,
should be jumping in joy at the
opportunity.
The Bollywood star though
is relatively calm. I am not a
superstitious man, but when
it is a happy co-incidence like
this one is, we all hope that
our dreams....the dreams of all
the fans of the North-East can
come true this year, said John.

GUWAHATI, Sept 30: A slew of festivals announce the advent of autumn and
the change in nature that unfolds slowly.
The biggest festival of the season, that is,
Durga Puja is the most awaited festive
occasion by all sections of population irrespective of caste, community and lan-

guage. A rather elaborate and extravagant

affair, the fervour that Durga Puja triggers is seen in no other festivals.
The countdown for Durga Puja officially began on Friday with the observation
of one of the most auspicious occasions
of the Hindus the Mahalaya. Along with
the rest of the country, the citizens of
Guwahati also observed the auspicious

occasion of Mahalaya, which precedes the

Durga Puja celebrations a week ahead.
Many people in the city got up at the
crack of dawn to observe the rituals related to Mahalaya. Some people also observed fast today and sought the blessings of the divine. This day was also significant as many performed shradh of
their parents and forefathers.

opening of the Kaziranga National Park
from tomorrow for visiting tourists,
many wildlife biologists felt that there
would not be any kind of adverse impact
on the ecology and for that matter the
grass habitat of Kaziranga.
While speaking to this correspondent,
Dr Pranab Bora from WWF-India said
there would not be any problem from the
ecological point of view, since tourists
would go for safari either on elephants
or jeep, which would follow only
specified tourist roads inside Kaziranga
National Park, like in previous years.
Secondly, the tourists are not allowed to
go walking inside the park areas, so there
will be no chance of any damage of vegetation inside the Park. There are some
restrictions where the tourists are not

allowed to even to get down from the

safari vehicles except at some watch
tower points. There will be no difference
by preponing of the schedule by a month.
Another wildlife biologist who has
been working in Kaziranga and other
wildlife parks and sanctuaries of Assam
for a long period of time, especially in
attending to wild animals in stressful
conditions, but did not wish to be named
said that there would not be any negative
impact on the ecology of Kaziranga but
added that some kind of regulations are
needed especially in the last part of
December and the first week of January
to streamline the jungle safari when the
inbound tourists of both international and
domestic level are exceptionally high.
Meanwhile, the Kaziranga Development and Jeep Safari Association and
owners of private elephants safari have
expressed serious reservation over the

reported statement made by the

chairman of Balipara Foundation, Ranjit
Borthakur, saying that there is no point
in dragging the issue unnecessarily.
Ananda Gogoi, secretary of the
association said that the government
must have done its home work before
opening the park. So whatever
Borthakur had said was baseless and
urged him not to create unnecessary
controversies. This would only create
confusion among the tourists who had
already booked their hotel rooms at
Kaziranga. The Assam Government had
a long time back announced its intention
of opening of the Kaziranga National Park
from October 1. Photic Bora, a senior
functionary of private elephants safari
association said that the Government
had definitely discussed the matter with
wildlife experts before taking a final Activists of the All Assam Adivasi Students Association staging a dharna in front of the Lakhimpur DCs office over various
issues in Lakhimpur, on Thursday. UB Photos

he Assamese film Kothanodi involves a very crucial

re-imagining of some elements from four tales of
Lakshminath Bezbaroas
Burhi Air Sadhu, forming links between the (changed) tales, and perhaps,
most importantly, cinematically utilising all potential for horror and the macabre. In brief, it is a brilliant horror film,
not quite the thing for little children
perhaps, although folktales, when they
exist in the oral medium, are often considered suitable for children.
Every art has its own muse. Hence,
cinematography and folktales work
with their own rules and in their own
direction. The changes that the tales
undergo in the film are occasioned by
the needs of cinematographic logic as
the director perceives it. There is no
use making any noise about
these changes, but the point is
to see how the changes work
for the film. The changes that
the director makes seem to be
driven by his desire to give a
certain character to the film,
rather than to let the film merely re-enact the tales. My understanding is that in the case
of Kothanodi, Bezbaroas tales
are revisited but changed in
such a manner that the film becomes a tale of foreboding
menace and horror. The director needs to be congratulated
for giving us a film that actually frightens, and a film that is so unlike those
endless Bollywood (and even Hollywood) movies where high-pitched horror scenes ultimately evoke irritation
and boredom.
In the film, the Tejimola story is
handled in such a manner that the el-

ements of cruelty and horror are magnified, and there is also an addition of
a subtle undercurrent of the uncanny
and the occult. In the folktale, Tejimolas stepmother is a stock-character,
being one of many such folktale characters who are particularly cruel to the

unforgettable impressions of terror.

The part dealing with Tejimolas transformations and her ultimate resurrection remains entirely unused in the
film. On the other hand, the film involves the addition of a particularly evil
dimension in the form of a demonic

children of their co-wives. Her punishing and killing Tejimola in the absence of Tejimolas father is described
quickly in the tale, and the remaining

lover or accomplice that Tejimolas stepmother is shown to have.

Parts of
Champavati

part of the tale concerns the repeated

resurrections of Tejimola in the form
of a gourd plant, a pomelo tree, a lotus
plant, a common mynah and finally as
Tejimola herself. In the film, the acts
of punishing and killing of Tejimola are
emphasised and handled very skilfully, the sounds and the visuals creating

the folktale, are also largely left out

to focus more on the dark, grim aspects
of the tale. In the folktale, there is a
rather long section in the beginning describing how Champavati gets to marry the god in pythons disguise, and also
a long section afterwards when the rak-

mrapali (Society for ARTS), a leading sociocultural organisation organised the second
Culture Colloquium Autumn 2016 on
September 25, 2016 at the Amrapali
Institute of Arts, Guwahati. This annual
event showcases thoughts and notions that preach and
promote arts and cultural concepts at various levels of
the society. This year, there were four invited speak-

speech by Tikendrajit Sarmah, retired associate

professor of the North Guwahati College, Department
of Anthropology, and present Education Consultant of
Amrapali (Society for ARTS). Sarmah shared the indepth nuances of earlier human inclination towards arts
and their interest in executing as well as preserving it.
Guest speaker Marami Medhi stressed upon the
concept of establishing performing arts as a major
learning subject for upcoming talents and
students, suggesting that it should not just be
considered an extraChandana Deka curricular activity.
As dance is a
threshold to gain knowledge in many co-related
subjects like mythology, history and literature,
itll definitely enhance a sincere learners
viewpoint, and in turn would benefit the self
and the society at large.
Dr Saiful Islams
speech revealed many
unknown contexts of
yoga asanas and that of
naturopathy, which one
can practice daily. The
only requirements are a
systematic lifestyle and
regular commitment to
it.
Pranaame Bhagawati
emphasised upon the
implementation of arts
at different levels of
the society. She spoke
of the need to have arts and aesthetics-oriented
classes within the classroom, and highlighted that
learners would benefit more from field trips and
cultural events.
Amrapalis venture of conducting such an initiative is,
indeed, laudable.

accompanied by the
Amrapali associate

The evening started off with an exchange of thoughts,

easy to simply ascribe that possession
to plain jealousy or complicated psychopathology or the occult, but thanks to
her brilliant acting, the fury of what possesses her or is inside her comes out
with all the violence that the cinematographic medium allows. Adil Hussains
role is not a challenging one, given his
immense capabilities, but within the
given role, he has performed exceptionally well. Seema Biswas as Bonolotikas mother is formidable, and her remark to the priest, who had refused to
conduct her daughters wedding with
the python, still rings in my ear, with
all the sarcasm and the taunt conveyed
in just a few words. Urmila Mahanta in
the role of Keteki does a very good job,
silently expressing the angst of a woman living on the margins of society. One interesting visual surprise in the film is the little European-looking child Keteki
finds as her own at the end
part of Bonolotikas
of her story. But what else can be

arama Prakriti Puberun Sarmas solo exhibition

at the State Art Gallery held last month his fourth
solo show overall was replete with colourful landscapes based on the North Easts picturesque hilly
terrain and pristine beauty of the villages. The paintings have depicted Mother Nature in her many moods
from the pensive sky on the verge of breaking down, to
the happy greenery, or from the contemplative, vermilion
sunset to the undulating contours of the sleepy hills. The
scenes essayed in them are the ones we all are familiar
with. Whats important, however, is how the artist has retained the essence of natural beauty of this region in his
paintings, in spite of adopting a tricky but exciting method
of colour application.
The use of spatula,
referred to as knife in
common artistic parlance, in colour application is not as frequently seen as the use of
brush, despite the
former having some advantages as it allows
you to work with greater speed and freedom.
While making a landscape, using a knife, of
course, does not guarantee total liberty.
When an artist wishes
to retain in his landscape some resemblance to Nature, then the use of knife
would require great skill and experience
on his part. In such landscapes, the relative distances between different objects (termed perspective) as well as
the viewers standpoint are also given
importance. In contrast, in a landscape
where the objects have been abstracted almost beyond recognition, the use
of spatula would not probably be as challenging.
It is in this area that Puberun has really come up trumps:
since most of his landscapes are not very far from reality, his
attempt to achieve a corresponding effect required utterly
skilful use of spatula. He has obviously chosen to make his
paintings using the knife because of the advantages it offers. The use of acrylics was an added advantage because
their quick-drying quality suited his style in this series. But,
it is clear that such control over a technique of colour application has not happened overnight; it is a result of several

thinking and skill that went into creating some moments of real terror and
an all-encompassing sense of gloom,
of something dark and dangerous lurking behind the facade of everyday life.
I was also wondering of other possibilities of exploring other dimensions
of our folktales. It is possible to re-imagine many of our folktales not only in
the brilliant manner in which Bhaskar
Hazarika has done in his film, but also
in other ways, evoking, for example,
not horror, but laughter.

years of close association with the art of painting.

This is apparent in the paintings where Puberun has
shown water-bodies or accumulated water in the marshlands, exemplified by the landscape that shows reflections
of a small row of trees surrounded by flooded areas. It is
the reflections in the water, to be precise, where the artists skills have truly been revealed. The decision to adopt
this method, and in particular, Puberuns penchant for short
dabs and dashes of colour resulted in most of his paintings
getting an impressionistic touch. Sparing use of the brush
in a few areas notwithstanding, the entire series of landscapes is marked by the uneven, patchy colour application.
At times, some patches are so broad and the knife-work so
fast and aggressive that certain areas create the impression of being deliberately left half-done.

Natures
bounty

Apart from a couple of paintings

where the artists desire to emphasise the freshness of the verdant landscape resulted in monotony, Puberun has taken care
to do away with it in most of the
expansive areas.
A couple of landscapes by him are qualitatively different
from the rest of the series, because of the flatter, largely
vertical dabs of colour, which have reduced the objects like
hills and trees into abstracted remnants of the reality they
represent. The layers of colour on the surface and those
beneath them also enhance the aesthetic value of the landscapes. To achieve all these effects with such minimum fuss
is truly remarkable. In his latest works, this is exactly what
the artist had set out for.

in a Rohit Shetty production.
Akshay and Paresh will come together on screen after a

Akshay and Rohit will collaborate on a film.
A source said,

that during her career even she had to be a part of
songs with vulgar lyrics.
Are we listening to the lyrics? These lyrics were
written by men and not women. Should we be listening to these songs? Should we be allowing them?
Juhi asked, addressing the issue of commercialisation of women in the Hindi film industry.
She also hit out at the media, saying that when
people voice out against such songs, journalists start
talking about freedom of speech and expression.
Even I had to do one or two such songs.
Do you think I was happy doing that? When

group of young filmmakers during the 80s and

witnessed a new era of
filmmaking. These filmmakers once
again popularised parallel cinema with
new style and content. This body of
films created a feel good aesthetic of
Bengaliness. They had the capacity to
understand the complexities of relationships, the intricacies of emotions and
the silent struggles that are inherent in
everyday family life in India, and they
tried to sketch the same with a realistic
flavour. Among them, the name of Rituporno Ghosh (August 31, 1963 - May
30, 2013) is prominent. His
films have combined the artistic features of Satyajit Ray
with the newly emerged middle-class Bengali cinema. He

infatuated with a famous (fictional) filmstar Rohit Roy, tells her mother (Urmila) how much she would like to marry

Ghoshs understanding of the complexities of womanhood can be seen in
Dahan (1997) and Bariwali (1999),
where he focussed on the ongoing struggles of a woman in a public and private
place. If Dahan represents the social
taboos or reactions towards molested
women, Bariwali tells the story of a

prelude
Sanskrit Literature in India is divided into the
Vedic period (1500 BC-200 BC), when the Vedic
form of Sanskrit was in use, and the Sanskrit
period (200 BC-1100 AD), when classical Sanskrit had developed from the Vedic. Notwithstanding the chronological continuity of Indian
writings, the spirit of Sanskrit-period literature
differs greatly from that of the Vedic period. The
chief distinction between the two is that Vedic
literature, consisting of the Vedas, Brahmanas,
and Upanishads, is essentially religious, whereas classical Sanskrit literature is, with rare exceptions, secular.
In the Vedas, the lyric and legendary forms
are in the service of prayer, or exposition of
the ritual; in Sanskrit epics, such as the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, didactic, lyric,
and dramatic forms have been developed far
beyond their earlier state for pure literary, aesthetic or moral purposes. In Sanskrit literature

New light on Buddhism

Dr Tapati Baruah Kashyap

he relevance of Buddhism in Assam,

its growth and origin, is an interesting subject, not only for research scholars, but also for the common masses. Dr Boby
Das, who teaches history at Sonapur College,
has come out with a significant book titled
Buddhism in Assam, which is an outcome of
her PhD research carried out under Prof AK
Thakur of the North Eastern Hill University,
Shillong. Buddhism, which prevailed in ancient Assam from its earliest times to the
13th century AD, is a major area for study,
with very little research work actually having
been done so far.
Divided into six chapters, the book focusses on the various aspects of Buddhism in Assam and also comments that though the exact
time of the origin of Buddhism in Assam is
not clear, the earliest evidence of its exist- Buddhism in Assam
ence can be ascertained from the stupas found Dr Boby Das
in the Surya Pahar area of Goalpara district. Aayu Publications, New Delhi
The study finds that there are as many as 25 Price: Rs 2500/votive stupas of different shapes and sizes, cut out of granite boulders. A number of
caves are also found in Paglatek, Jogighopa and at Pancharatna, along with one monolithic stupa. It is believed that those caves were used by the Buddhist monks during the
early period.
The author also says that apart from the Buddhist remains of early centuries, several
references are found in the early Buddhist work Aryamanjusrimukulakalpa, about
the prevalence of Buddhist practices in Assam. As pointed out by Dr Das, very few
know that traces of Buddhism are also found in Hajo, Gurmou, Madan-Kamdev, Abhayapuri, Pratapgarh, Da-Parbatiya, Golaghat, and in various parts of Guwahati, including Kamakhya, Sukreswar and Odalbakra.
Dr Das, during the course of her study, brings forth several interesting facts regarding the emergence and prevalence of Buddhism in Assam. Though politically, Assam
was situated outside the periphery of the empire of Asoka and Kanishka, two great
kings who had immensely helped in propagation of Buddhism, yet Assam not only
maintained socio-cultural contacts with the Indian mainland, but also played a major
role as a trade route with Tibet, China, Bhutan and Burma, regions where Buddhism
prevailed. As such, Buddhist settlements, caves and monasteries are to be found in
almost all the important trade routes.
While attempting to draw a picture of similarities between Hinduism and Buddhism
in the last part of the book, many interesting facts have come to light, which will
definitely help in taking up further research on those aspects too. The author deserves
praise for throwing new light on Buddhism in Assam, which also attracts people
belonging to diverse faiths.

Mouchumi follows the Haiku style of poetry. Her poems are short, two or three
words per line and a maximum of seven to nine lines, though the original Japanese
Haiku style of poetry consisted of three lines only the first line of five syllables,
the second of seven and third of five. Haiku poetry deals with Nature, while
Mouchumi deals with Nature as well as life. Brevity is the soul of wit, they say.
Mouchumis poems are not meant to be witty, they are philosophical but full of life.
The first poem in the collection, Jibon (Life) in which the poet speaks about life
being a carnival of happiness and sorrow, sets the tone for the rest of the poems.
The poems are all about life in all its dimensions the race, experience, rage, faith,
search for God, creation, etc.
The poems have been translated into Hindi by Jyotish Kumar Deb, into English by Bibekananda Choudhury, into Bengali by Mitali Bhattacharjee and into
Nepali by Kavit Regmi. The translations are competent and do succeed to a large
extent in carrying the feel and flavour of the original Assamese poems. The
illustrations in the background are superb and the printing seamless, adding to
the beauty of the poems.
The style adopted by Mouchumi in this anthology is engaging. A line of two to
three words, a poem of at the most ten lines will surely interest readers in this age
when attention spans have dwindled and interest in literature has flagged.

NEW DELHI, Sept 30: Taking Karnataka to task for its

repeated defiance by flouting its orders for release of
Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu,
the Supreme Court today
asked it to discharge 6,000
cusecs water from tomorrow
till October 6, warning no one
would know when the wrath
of the law would fall on it.
The apex court gave the last
opportunity to the Siddaramiah government to release
6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu from October 1-6, despite a unanimous
resolution passed by both
house of Assembly.
Karnataka despite being a
state is flouting the order and
creating a situation when the
majesty of law is dented. We
would have proceeded to take
steps for strict compliance of
the order but we have directed Cauvery Water Management Board to first study the

ground realities and submit a

report, a bench of Justices
Dipak Misra and UU Lalit said.
Karnataka shall not be bent
upon to take an obstinate and
stand of defiance as one does
not know when wrath of the
law will fall upon them, the
bench said while directing the
Centre to constitute the Cauvery Water Management
Board by October 4.
It ordered all the stakeholders Karnataka, Tamil Nadu,
Kerala and Pudduchery to
give names by 4 pm tomorrow
of their representatives to be
included in the board which
would be chaired by the Union
Water Resources Minister.
We assume that Karnataka
being a part of the federal structure of the country shall live
upto the occasion and not show
any deviancy till report of
ground reality is submitted by
the Cauvery Water Management Board, the court said.

Afghanistan defends
surgical strikes
NEW DELHI, Sept 30: Afghanistan today backed Indias
surgical strikes on terror
launch pads in PoK, terming it
as an act of self-defence, and
in a strong message to Pakistan asserted that time has
come to take tough and
risky decisions to deal with
the menace of terrorism.
Afghanistans Ambassador to
India Shaida Abdali said his country does not make distinction
between terrorist groups and
is against all such organisations
that pose a danger and threat to
any country in the world.
When asked about Afghanistans stand on the surgical
strikes undertaken by India in
PoK, Abdali told reporters at
The Foreign Correspondents
Club of South Asia,We hope
that no one will allow its territory as a safe haven for terrorists to be used against neigh-

bouring countries.
If terrorist groups continue to exist without action, no
wonder self-defence against
such terrorist groups will be
in the form of action that we
saw, he said, referring to the
surgical strikes conducted by
India on seven terror launch
pads across the LoC with the
Army inflicting significant
casualties on terrorists preparing to infiltrate from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Abdali said it was high time
we take tough decisions and
they may be risky but are
needed to be taken to end terrorism.
He said such decisions may
have a cost but the cost is worth
it because we have to end this
continued terrorism that affects our people, our lives every day and is taking our vision
backward day by day. PTI

The bench reminded Karnataka that it is bound by Article 144 of the Constitution and
aid in compliance of the order of the Supreme Court.
On plain reading of Article
144, it is clear as crystal that
all authorities are bound to
work in aid of Supreme Court
and they are bound to obey the
orders of Supreme Court but
unfortunately Karnataka being
a state is flouting the orders of
the court, the bench said.
At the outset, senior advocate FS Nariman, representing Karnataka, referred to the
communications between him
and the Chief Minister Siddaramiah.
Senior advocate Shekhar
Naphade, appearing for Tamil
Nadu, expressed anguish on
behalf of the state saying Karnataka has already made up its
mind that it is not going to
comply with the apex court
directions. PTI

PATNA, Sept 30: The Patna

High Court today quashed the
government notification completely banning liquor in the
state, saying it is ultra vires of
the Constitution.
A division bench of the court
quashed the notification of the
state government to stop consumption and sale of alcohol in
the state. The April 5 notification is ultra vires to the Constitution, hence not enforceable, the court said.

of writ petitions filed by Liquor
Trade Association and many
individuals challenging the liquor law in Bihar brought by
Nitish Kumar government
with stringent penal provisions.
The Nitish Kumar-led
Grand Secular Alliance government had first banned the
manufacture, trade, sale, consumption of country-made liquor since April 1, but later
imposed a blanket ban on all
types of liquor including foreign liquor in the state. PTI

Electric motorcycle maker
Tork Motors today launched its
first model T6X at a promotional price of Rs 1.25 lakh.
Powered by lithium ion batteries, the T6X can reach a top
speed of 100 kmph and runs 100
km on a single charge, Tork
Motors said in a statement. The
battery can be charged up to 80
per cent in an hour and fully
charged in two hours. Depending upon the usage of the bike,
the battery life can last up to ap-

Tork Motors Director Kapil

framework is firing up growth in

gone down by approximately
50 per cent over the last 3
years, has enabled us to work

Pakistan is running full
speed to develop tactical nukes
in their continuing hostility
with India, the former secretary of state told a close door
fundraiser in Virginia in February, the paper reported, citing 50-minute audio that appeared on the website of The
Washington Free Beacon.
During the fund raiser, responding to a question on modernisation of nuclear weapons,
the daily said, Clinton went
beyond the question to warn
of an emerging nuclear arms
race, naming Russia and China
as well as Pakistan and India.
This is one of the most dangerous developments imaginable, Clinton said.
Such remarks from the
former secretary of state gains
significance in view of an interview of Pakistani Defence
Minister Khwaja Muhammad
Asif to the local TV channel in
which he threatened to unleash nukes against India.
If our safety is threatened,
we will annihilate them (India), Asif had said.
The United States appears

Asifs recent statements on
use of nuclear weapons.
Nuclear capable states
have the responsibility to exercise restraint regarding nuclear weapons and missile capabilities, a state department
official told PTI when asked
about the statements being

Earlier, Defence Secretary
Ashton Carter had said while
India has generally shown responsible behaviour with nuclear technology, China conducts itself professionally, nuclear weapons in Pakistan are
entangled in history of tensions. PTI

CROSSWORD - 5791

HAPPY BIRTHDAY for Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016:

This year you demonstrate great strength. Good fortune heads in your
direction as well. You could be prone to excess of all types. Your selfdiscipline will make or break your year. If you are single, you might have
too many potential suitors to choose from. At times, you might not be sure
which way to turn. Follow your heart, not your mind. If you are attached, the
two of you will have many great times together, although your tendency to
go overboard could become an issue between you. Try to rein yourself in
more. A fellow LIBRA enjoys your sense of humor.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Defer to others, and make an effort to deal with their
issues. You might hear news from someone at a distance that could
affect your plans. Your sensitivity to a partner or loved one will help you
understand where he or she is coming from. Tonight: Invite others to join you.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
A partner who tends to look at the negative side could be
closed down. You might not be sure how to handle this person in
situations like these. Try to look at the big picture rather than get caught up in
details. A trip might be necessary in the near future. Tonight: Play it low-key.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20)
A new beginning becomes possible when you see the
reaction of a loved one to your fatigue with what has been going
on. You might feel as if you have given too much of yourself, and this
person could feel the same. Let your playful ways melt barriers. Tonight:
Be childlike.
CANCER (June 21-July 22)
You tend to be happiest at home hanging out with friends
and loved ones. One-on-one relating becomes more important
than in the past. Know where you are coming from when dealing with a loved
one who seems to be transforming. Tonight: Indulge in a favorite meal.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
Keep conversations moving. Spread your upbeat style, and
help others let go of their negative moods. A close friend stumbles
out of negativity and is able to let go of a problem. The two of you will cast an
aura of magic on those around you. Tonight: At your favorite haunt.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
You will want to say no until you are sure of the pros and
cons of an expenditure. A loved one will want you to OK the idea
so much that he or she might coax you into it by leaving out an important
detail. You will have to decide if the cost is worth it. Tonight: Pick up the tab.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
You smile and draw others toward you. You help people
enjoy themselves and let go of what is on their minds; you
seem to be able to help them feel cared for. Those in your immediate
circle cant help but get into the moment when you are around. Tonight:
Whatever you want.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
Your sensitivity heightens when dealing with a volatile or
changeable situation. This matter might not affect you directly, but
somehow you will be involved. Allow your imagination to flow, and you will be
amazed by how quickly ideas come up. Tonight: Head to the movies.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
You could be off-kilter until you join friends. Your creativity
might be crucial in helping you get past a money issue. Somehow,
this colors the moment. Be aware of your limits and honor them. In the long
run, you will be a lot happier if you do. Tonight: Have some fun.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
You might be saddled with an abnormal amount of responsibilities. You have said no and expressed your annoyance, yet
somehow your message is not being received. Consider distancing yourself
for now. Let a friend plead your case. Tonight: Another late night.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
You have a lot going on. You might be unsure about how
much you need to get done, and it could prevent you from hopping
in the car for a drive to a favorite place. It is possible that others have
expectations that cannot be met. Tonight: Do for you! Do whatever you want.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)
You see life from a different perspective than many others. You appreciate a loved one much more than he or she
might be aware. Make special time to celebrate that this person exists in
your life. Tonight: You owe no explanations to others if you decide to go
your own way.

GUWAHATI, Sept 30: Spirited 3 Star Club

Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi Trophy Football Tournament, co-sponsored by the Assam Tribune
group here at the Nehru Stadium today.
After a gruelling dry first session East Bengal went ahead in the 83rd minute through

equaliser in the added time (90+4). In the first
half of the extra time Bimal Ghatri Magor netted the all important goal in the 99th minute.
The Kolkata outfit was more aggressive

in the first session but the Nepal boys gradually

took control on the ground and started raiding

NorthEast United take on

Kerala Blasters in ISL opener
SPORTS REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 30: The third edition of

the Indian Super League (ISL) is all set to kickoff with hosts NorthEast United FC taking on
Kerala Blasters here tomorrow. NorthEast
United and Kerala Blasters go head-to-head at
the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium in Sarusajai here, in the opening fixture of the Indian
calendars most watched football tournament.
NorthEast United finished at the bottom
of the league table in the first year and although there were some encouraging performances last season, they could not qualify
for the play-offs.
Infact, both teams seek to put behind an
unsuccessful 2015 ISL, with neither of them

having made the play-offs for the semi-final

during the regular league. NorthEast United FC seems to be determined to turn the
table this season and achieve their target of
first qualifying and then securing the title.
Earlier in an interview to The Assam Tribune, NorthEast United FC head coach, Nelo
Vingada had stated that reaching the play-offs
would be the ultimate goal.
Kerala Blasters head into this game with
the onus on stopping NorthEast United rather than grabbing a win themselves. Depleted
severely due to player unavailabilities, Coppell has a series of decisions to make even
before the team have kicked a ball.
Match starts at 7 pm.

India flounder, disciplined Kiwis grab Day 1 honours

KOLKATA, Sept 30: Indias
vaunted batting line-up failed
to recover from the early
blows dealt by New Zealands
concerted bowling effort and
wobbled to 239 for 7 on the
opening day of the second
cricket Test here today.
Barring Cheteshwar Pujara
(87) and Ajinkya Rahane (77),
none of the batsmen came
good after skipper Virat Kohli opted to bat on the relaid
pitch of the historic Eden Gardens stadium, hosting Indias
250th home Test.

Ravindra Jadeja (0) and

Wriddhiman Saha (14) were
holding fort for the home side
when stumps were drawn at
the end of the 87th over due
to bad light.
The Kiwis, who were dealt
a blow this morning when regular skipper and top batsman
Kane Williamson was ruled
out of match owing to illness,
showed tremendous resilience to put up a fine first day
show.
Medium-pacer Matt Henry
was the Black Caps top wick-

et-taker with a haul of 3/35 in

his miserly 15 overs, while
off-spinner Jeetan Patel,
brought into the side due to
the injury-forced exit of Mark
Craig, chipped in with two
wickets.
India, who will regain the
top spot in ICC rankings if
they seal the three-match series in this match, did not
make a very good start and
lost their top-three batsmen
even before the score had
touched 50.
Pujara and Rahanes

dogged fourth-wicket stand

of 141 was the high point for
India today.
For the in-form Pujara, it
was his third half-century
from as many innings but a
lapse in concentration ended
his patient innings of 87 that
came off 219 deliveries and
was studded with 17 hits to
the fence.
From being 46/3 in a jittery
first session, Pujara and Rahane batted with grit and determination under the blazing
afternoon heat and energy-

sapping humidity.
The duos stand spanned
three hours and nine minutes
but the Kiwis made an impact
in the final session snapping
four wickets.
Pujara was set up brilliantly by left-arm pacer Neil Wagner, who put a short cover for
him, and the Indian holed out
to Martin Guptill.
However, it was not a good
day at his favourite ground for
Rohit Sharma (2), who was
dismissed by Patel. The righthander also looked to have

hurt his left shoulder while

attempting a single.
For the Kiwis, it was a tale
of two comeback men as first
24-year-old Henry (3/35),
who had replaced their pace
spearhead Tim Southee created quite a flutter by removing both the openers
Shikhar Dhawan (1) and Murali Vijay (9).
Off the second ball of his
first over, Henry bowled Dhawan who tried to cut in an angled delivery only to drag the
ball back to his stumps.

Replacing Lokesh Rahul,

Dhawans stint lasted just 10
balls with the scorecard reading 1/1 in the second over.
Vijay also perished to a beauty from the youngster playing only his fifth Test.

Ibrahimovic propels
Man United to victory
DUBLIN, Sept 30: Zlatan Ibrahimovic headed in a 69thminute winner as Manchester United got their Europa
League campaign off the ground with a laboured 1-0 home
win over Zorya Luhansk.
Beaten 1-0 at Feyenoord in their Group A opener, Jose
Mourinhos side struggled to break down their unadventurous Ukrainian opponents until the introduction from
the bench of Wayne Rooney.
The England captains mishit shot was headed in by Ibrahimovic to leave United a point behind group leaders
Fenerbahce, who visit Old Trafford on October 20.
It was difficult, said Mourinho. We had our chances in
the first half. We could have scored and it would have been
a different match. But we didnt.
They kept organised and had plenty of players behind the ball, but with players ready to do something
on the counter-attack. It was difficult and we needed to
win.
One week, three defeats. One week, three victories.
But I was not depressed by the defeats and I am not over
the moon with three wins.
It was a far from fluent United performance, but it maintained their upturn in form following the recent run of
three straight defeats that had destroyed their early-season momentum.
Zorya, UEFA group-phase debutants, became Uniteds
100th continental opponents and they threatened to create
a sensation when Zeljko Ljubenovic ballooned over from
Ivan Petriaks cut-back.
In the main, though, they sat back, packing men behind
the ball in a 4-5-1 formation, and United struggled to play
through them.
Ibrahimovic had a shot deflected wide by Dmytro Grechyshkin, but as in last Saturdays 4-1 win over league champions Leicester City, the hosts looked most threatening
from corners in the first half. Agencies
