ME6603-FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS

VII Semester Automobile Engineering
Duration: 1 hr 40 mins

Max. Marks: 60
Answer all the questions

Part A (6 X 2 = 12)
1

Write down the expression of governing equation for free axial vibration of rod and
transverse vibration of beam

What is meant by transverse vibrations?

State Fouriers law of heat conduction used in FEA.

Write a shape function for 1-D quadratic bar element.

Give at least one example each for plane stress and plane strain analysis.

List the characteristics of shape functions.

Part B (2 X 8 = 16)

For the constant strain triangular element, assemble strain displacement matrix.
Take t=20 mm and E=2105 N/mm2

(8)

Derive the shape functions for a beam element

(8)

Part C (2 X 16 = 32)
9

Determine the extension of the bar shown in Fig. Due to self weight and a
concentrated load of 600N applied at its end. Given b 1=200 mm. b2 = 100mm
and t=20 mm. Use two spar elements to solve the problem. Take E=210 5
N/mm2 and = 0.8 10-4 N/mm3..

(16)

9 b A circular fin 0f 40 mm diameter is fixed to a base maintained at 50C as shown

in figure. The fin is insulated on the surface except the end face which is
exposed to air at 25C. The length of the pin is 1000 mm, the fine is made of
metal with thermal conductivity of 37W/m K. If the convection heat coefficient
with air is 15 W/m2 K. If the convection heat coefficient with air is 15 W/m 2 K.
Find the temperature distribution at 250, 500, 750 and 1000 mm from base.

(16)

10

For the plane strain elements shown in figure, the nodal displacements are given
as u1 = 0.005 mm, v1 = 0.002 mm, u2 = 0.0, v2 = 0.0, u3 = 0.005 mm, v3 = 0.30
mm. Determine the element stresses and the principle angle. Take E = 70 Gpa
and Poissons ration = 0.3 and use unit thickness for plane strain. All coordinates
are in mm.

(16)

10 b Derive the Shape functions and strain displacement matrix for constant strain triangular
element.
