October 6, 2016 Mr. Edward Rauscher, Chairman Town of Ipswich Board of Selectmen 25 Green Street Ipswich, MA 01938
Dear Mr. Rauscher:
The Ipswich Agricultural Commission has been informed that the Town is considering plans related to the pending transfer of ownership of the property known as Pony Express Farm, located at Essex and Candlewood Roads. This is a particularly significant property because of its size, location, and potential for multiple uses. These could include active and passive recreation, open space, wildlife habitat, and agriculture. We understand that the Town is considering many, if not all, of these possible uses for the land. At its meeting on September 7, 2016, the Agricultural Commission discussed some of the issues regarding the change in ownership and the future uses of the farm. As you know, a portion of Pony Express Farm has been in agricultural use for many years, primarily for the growing of hay. We believe that it is in the best interest of the Town and the Ipswich agricultural community to ensure the continued availability of this portion of the property for farming. Therefore, the Commission voted unanimously (member Royce Knowlton abstaining as an abutter) to write to the Board of Selectmen urging that, in the acquisition of Pony Express Farm, the Town take all possible steps to ensure that the portion of the property currently in agricultural use remain in such use. Thank you for your time and consideration of our request. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at your convenience. Sincerely,
Jay Stanbury, Chairman
