ONLY JESUS OFFERS AN ETERNAL GIFT

Key Scriptures: John 1:6-13; Romans 10:9-13

BIBLE BASIS FOR TEACHERS

John 1:6-13; Romans 10:9-13
It might be hard for us to understand how someone could believe in Big Foot but not in Jesus. God took a huge risk
when he gave us the freedom to believe whatever we want. However, God knew that faith in Jesus wouldnt be real
if we werent given the freedom to choose who or what we want to believe in. Use this lesson to help kids understand
that if they believe in Jesus with their whole hearts, they need to share that belief with others so those people can
have the opportunity to accept what Jesus has done for them, too.
John 1:6-11 describes how God sent John the Baptist to prepare people for the coming of Jesus. John told people
the truth about Jesus. But when Jesus came, people didnt recognize him and rejected his message. Using these
verses, talk to kids about why people might not recognize Jesus today and why people choose to reject the truth
about Jesus.
Even though many people didnt recognize Jesus or rejected him, John 1:12-13 says those who do believe in and
accept Jesus have the right to become children of God. Ask kids to think about why God allows everyone the freedom to make such a huge choice. Encourage kids to share their faith in Jesus with someone else.
Romans 10:9-13 describes the equation for salvation. God made it incredibly simple: If you confess with your mouth
that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Explain to kids that
salvation isnt something we can earn, and theres no other way to get into heaven. We simply need to accept the free
gift of forgiveness through Jesus.

OPENING
Play Christian music as kids enjoy snacks and friendship. Give kids this discussion starter as they eat. Say: Survey
the kids in our group to find out what they think is the most important decision theyll ever make.
Allow time, then ask kids to share what they discovered.
Say: Before we get started, lets play Blackout that is Musical Chairs played in the dark.
Play this game in a darkened room, with only a small flashlight for light. Set up a circle of chairsall facing out. Place
one less chair in the circle than you have kids playing the game.
Ask kids to form a circle around the circle of chairs and stand with their arms folded across their chests. When the
music starts, have kids march slowly around the circle in a clockwise direction while maintaining the crossed-arm
position. When the music stops, kids have five seconds to find a chair. Anyone standing or sitting on someone else
when the lights come on after five seconds is eliminated from the game. After each round, have each eliminated
player take one chair from the circle. (Let kids who are eliminated take turns choosing when to stop and start the
music.) Play until only two people remain.
Say: Now lets play Balloon Pop and stomp out other peoples balloons.
Give everyone a small, easy-to-break balloon and a 2-foot length of string or yarn. Have kids each inflate their balloon
and tie it to one ankle so the balloon is about 10 inches from the ankle. Then announce that kids are to try to stomp
out other peoples balloons while keeping their own balloon safe.

BIBLE STUDY INTRODUCTION

Say: Lets have a Choose Your Savior contest.
Have kids form groups of four, and assign one of the following to each group:
Jesus
Superman
Santa Claus
Alien from Mars
Easter Bunny
Add additional characters if needed, such as the Tooth Fairy, Bigfoot, or Mickey Mouse.
Say: Imagine this: Satellite photos have revealed that a gigantic flying pancake appears to be headed straight
toward earth. You believe your group savior can rescue the world from destruction. Convince us! Introduce
your saviors one at time, and tell us why we should believe they can save us.
Give groups a few minutes to figure out what theyll say. Then allow groups one minute each to present their savior.
When everyone has finished, have kids vote on the savior they believe is most able to save the world.
Ask: Why did you vote for the savior you chose? Why did or didnt you choose Jesus to save you from the
flying pancake?
Ask: Why do you think some people choose to believe in things such as Santa and the Tooth Fairy but not
Jesus? What are some other things people choose to believe and put their trust in?

FREE ADMISSION

Say: It might seem hard for us to believe that someone could believe in Bigfoot but not in Jesus. God took a
huge risk when he gave us the freedom to believe whatever we want. Believing in Jesus is all about choices,
so lets begin our small-group time by making the choice to think about what Gods Word has to say about why
everyone doesnt just believe in Jesus as their savior.

SMALL-GROUP BIBLE STUDY

Form groups of no more than four. Give each child a Only Jesus Offers an Eternal GIft handout. Have groups
complete the Bible study in 15 minutes. Then bring groups back together.

REPORTS
Have groups report what they learned in their Bible study using the following prompt:
Sit in a circle, and pass a gift bag around the circle. As you receive the gift bag, share what you discovered about
receiving or rejecting the gift of Gods Son, Jesus.

CLOSING
Say: Sit, stand, or kneel to pray, or pray with a friend. The choice is yours, as long as you talk to God from
your heart.
Say: Do you believe in Jesus? Not just with the words of your mouth but with your heart? If you do, others need
to hear about it so they can make a choice to believe in Jesus, too. This week, confess your faith in God to
someone this week. Think of a person you know who doesnt know God, and tell him or her how much Jesus
means to you. Share the things you discovered today in John 1 and Romans 10. Show your friend the salvation
equation and the crossroad, and then invite your friend to stop, believe, and receive.
Find the Parent Page for this lesson in the Parent Page folder. Have each child give a copy to his or her parents.
