observations with patients

a stronger understanding

Why is this a problem?

21.9 million people or 9.3% of


the population are affected by
diabetes in the United States
Hypoglycemia is when there is
a deficiency of glucose in the
blood stream.
Severe hypoglycemia causes
brain fuel deprivation and can
lead to unconsciousness.
Untreated this can lead to
death.
'Dead in Bed Syndrome' is a
common fear in individuals

with accurate values according to
literature

Problems to Consider
Hypoglycemia:

Sudden death of patients because of


dropping heart rate during the night is
a possible result of lower blood sugar

Devices on market:
No current devices that measure heart
rate and blood glucose while patient is
asleep
Alert Challenges:
Alerting patient to low heart rate in
accordance with glucose values
Alert emergency only when patient is
unconscious from low heart rate
Physiological Challenges:
Greenlight absorption measurement
(used in wrist monitor devices)
accuracy has not been compared to
traditional heart rate monitors

Target Audience
Individuals of any age, gender, race
and ethnicity. The user will be a
diabetic, either a Type 1 or Type 2.
This device is aimed at all diabetic
individuals.
