The Chamber of Mines of Eastern BC is hosting the annual Mining Conference
in Nelson this year at the Prestige Lakeside Resort & Convention Center.
November 1st to 4th, 2016

Geologist), Glenn Hendricks, Sean Kennedy, AMEBC, BCGS, Geoscience BC,

Documentary Film
A New Economy
An energized group of Nelson co-operatives is preparing to host the Kootenay premiere of a new documentary
film. A New Economy highlights the demand for changing traditional economic practices for the good of both
humanity and the environment.
The film screens on Thursday, October 20 as part of
Co-op Week. The film, A New Economy, explores what
might happen if working together for the common good
were to become the most common business model. It follows several organizations that strive to build a more cooperative future. By putting humanity before the bottom
line, they are carving a new place in an economy presently
dominated by profits and big business. The screening is
being organized by a group of dedicated Nelson co-operators, including representatives from the Upper Columbia
Co-op Council, Nelson & District Credit Union, Kootenay
Co-op Radio and the Kootenay Co-op.
People are looking for alternatives to traditional business models, says Zo Creighton, coordinator of the Upper
Columbia Co-op Council. They want to see enterprises
that are sustainable, democratic, socially conscious and
rooted in their communities. They want businesses that
put people first and are guided by values and principles,
not just profits. And they want businesses that contribute
to creating better communities, a better Canada and a better world. In short, they want a better way to do business!
Thats why a group of like-minded co-ops in Nelson
and area will be using the opportunity of Co-op week to
highlight the many ways in which co-operatives and credit
unions make things better, not just here in the Kootenays,
but also in BC, Canada and around the world, she adds.
A New Economy is focused on the new economy movement and the hundreds of global innovations being
funded and developed through unconventional models by the many people working toward a new economy,
including co-operatives and credit unions. Co-op Week
will take place from October 16 to 22 with International
Credit Union Day on October 20. This years theme for
Co-op Week is Our Co-op Advantage.

The purpose of the Fund is to provide local financial support for

important projects that will contribute to the conservation of our
valuable natural areas. Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund
(KLLCF) funding is available for conservation projects that result in the
reduction to a known threat to biodiversity. The themes for the Fund
are water conservation, wildlife and habitat conservation, and open
space conservation.
Projects that are technically sound and effective, and provide
value for money through partnerships with other funders will
be given priority. Proponents must be a registered not-for-profit
organization, First Nations band or local government. Unqualified
groups or organizations may partner with a qualified organization. A
Technical Review Committee will review project proposals and make
recommendations to the RDCK for final funding approval.

No, the Nelson Public Library wants to hear from the
communities it serves through an online survey. Everyone who completes the survey will be entered into a draw
for great prizes, including a three month pass for free
parking anywhere in Nelson, tickets for Kokanee Mountain Zipline, Whitewater Ski Resort day passes, tickets
for the upcoming production of Baskerville: A Sherlock
Holmes Mystery at the Capitol Theatre, or Wild Woods
Yoga passes, among other things.
Feedback from our communities will help the Library
make decisions about its collections, including finding
the right balance between traditional books and online
resources; the facility and how to best use the existing
space; and what programs and services are most relevant
and can be delivered within the Librarys budget.
We want to know if the ways that people are using the
library are changing and how they see their needs evolving, said Stockdale. This will ensure that we not only
meet current needs, but are prepared for the future needs
of the greater community.
All residents in the region including those who dont
have library memberships are encouraged to complete the
survey. The Library serves residents of the City of Nelson
and Areas F and South H through taxation and other residents in the region through paid subscription.

access can drop into the library during open hours and
staff will be happy to help. The deadline for completing

Site C Dam Controversy

Tour In Nelson
Construction of the Site C Dam on the Peace River is

one of the most controversial projects in BC. The Sierra
Club of BC is hosting a public talk in Nelson on Friday,
October 28 as part of a province wide tour on the issue.
The Site C Dam is a $10 billion plus issue for the people
of BC. Its an environmental travesty and a blatant violation of First Nations self-determination. People all over
BC need to be talking about Site C, says Ana Simeon
Sierra Club organizer and one of three speakers at the
Nelson event.
Joining her are Julian Napoleon from Saulteau First
Nation and local activist Candace Batycki with the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative.
The Peace Valley can provide fruits and vegetables for
one million people and abundant traditional harvests of
trout, moose, berries and medicinal plants for the regions
First Nations. How can we support the people of the Peace
Valley and stop Site C?
The public talk will be held on Friday, October 28 at
7 pm in the Nelson United Church, 602 Silica Street.
Admission is free, any donations collected go to support
Treaty 8 First Nations legal challenges to the Site C Dam.

David Michael Wiebe

It is with heavy hearts that we announce
the passing of David Michael Wiebe
on September 26, 2016 at the age of 69.
David passed at his home in Kaslo, BC.
David was a beloved father, brother,
uncle, grandfather and a dear friend
to many. He was born in Winnipeg,
Manitoba on February 25, 1947 and
was the first child of Jack and Martha
Wiebe. David spent his youth in various
cities as the family followed his fathers
military career throughout Canada and
abroad. After leaving home, he did not
pursue a traditional form of education; rather, as he would often say, he
broadened his cultural, intellectual and spiritual education by
traveling the world.
After years of traveling, his love of music brought him to
Edmonton, AB where he opened and operated two well-known
used music stores, Sound Connection and Southside Sound.
Eventually, while seeking a quieter life away from the big city,
David discovered the Kootenays. He first owned property in
Ferguson, BC, a small ghost town near Trout Lake. He finally
settled with his family in Kaslo, BC in 1993. During this time
he also opened Local Motion Music in Nelson, BC.

After selling his music businesses, David

spent his time in Kaslo doing various
contracting jobs and developing his masonry skills. Many of his beautiful rock
walls can be found throughout Kaslo and
the surrounding area.
During Davids 69 years and in the many
cities he lived in, he left a lasting impression on many people. David will likely
be most remembered in the community
for his passion and advocacy for Kaslos
youth, specifically for his involvement
with the Kaslo Youth Centre as well
as the immense time and effort he put
towards fundraising, planning and constructing the Kaslo Skate Park, which opened in 2007.
To his friends and family he was always the guy who would
lend an ear and provide support if someone found themselves
in a tough situation. To many, he was like a second dad.
David will be remembered and deeply missed by his daughters
Marlena Paul (Kevin Paul) and Sarah Pradl-Wiebe and their
mother Gabriele Pradl, his brother Ron Wiebe (Deanna Ramsey), his granddaughter Ellie as well as extended family and his
many friends in Kaslo and elsewhere across the country.

This public nominations process is part of a larger initiative, the South Asian Canadian Historic Places Recognition Project, that focuses on the stories of individuals
who identify themselves as having heritage based in the
South Asian regions of India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh,
Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Maldives and Sri Lanka. Recognition of places with historic significance to South Asian
Canadians will serve as an opportunity to celebrate British Columbias diversity and acknowledge this communitys important contribution, both past and present, to
the prosperity of the province.
Public input, through the nomination process, will
result in an important inventory of historic places that
will be added to an online, interactive map. A selection
of nominated historic places will be officially recognized
by the Government of British Columbia and placed on
both the BC Register of Historic Places and the Canadian
Register of Historic Places.
We are looking for a variety of places from across
British Columbia, from buildings to entire landscapes,
in small communities, as well as larger cities says Amy

Open to every British Columbian and beyond, the
nomination process encourages people to describe what
they believe has meaning for the history and development of the South Asian community in British Columbia. Nominations can include large and small buildings
of any type, entire districts and neighbourhoods, landscapes, cemeteries and even abandoned sites that are
being reclaimed by nature.

Regional District of Central Kootenay volunteer fire departments are showing off their assets in a new calendar for a
good cause to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
The calendar is a fun way to raise awareness of and
money for this devastating disease while celebrating
our hardworking and dedicated firefighters, said Chief
Andrew Bellerby, the RDCKs regional fire chief. The calendar features personnel from many of the RDCKs 18 fire
halls in a variety of scenarios and settings.
Everyone had a great time contributing to this project,
said Chief Bellerby, who added that he hopes the calendar
may inspire some residents to join the fire service. Our volunteers give so much to our communities and to charity,
said Bellerby. They hold an annual Fill the Boot campaign
to benefit Muscular Dystrophy Canada. This calendar will
help with that fundraising effort. With the holiday season
approaching, the calendar makes a great stocking stuffer.
The calendars are available for purchase for $10 at any of
the RDCKs 18 fire halls or any RDCK office.

Taking Charge of Our Health
Environment Expo In The Park
Do you care about the natural world? Are you looking

for simple actions that you can do to protect our environment? If the answer is YES, then you need to make it to
the Environment Expo In The Park on Saturday, October
15, at Rotary Lakeside Park in Nelson.
The Central Kootenay Invasive Species Society (CKISS)
is hosting the Expo and invites all Kootenay residents to
attend. We want you to get inspired to care for and protect
our ecologically diverse area.
What to Expect? The casual Expo is designed to be fun
and informative for people of all ages. The event will kick
off with nature inspired face painting from Grasshopper
Lane Artworks, live bluegrass music from the band The
String Birds and a BBQ lunch.
A planting party will be a highlight of the event. Event
participants will have the chance to join CKISS staff in
planting native shrubs and grasses within the park in
order to boost the health of the ecosystem. All of these
activities will be free of charge.
The conclusion of the event will be the CKISS annual
general meeting. We encourage you to attend the relaxed
meeting to find out what the CKISS accomplished in
2015, highlights of 2016 and how you can get involved.
Who will be there? A variety of displays will be set up
from a range of environmental organizations that are
working hard to conserve the natural world. We encourage you to visit each display to meet conservationists in
your community and pick up valuable information on a
diversity of topics. The organizations that will be showcased are:
Friends of Kootenay Lake, West Kootenay Eco Society,
Kootenay Community Bat Project, WildsafeBC, Kootenay Native Plant Society, Royal BC Museum: Species at
Risk Mini Museums, Fish and Wildlife Compensation
Program, BC Invasive Mussel Defense Program, Central
Kootenay Invasive Species Society.

Pennywise
Thoughts are things. Mind is the builder. These are quotes

from the Bible and Edgar Cayce that indirectly allude to
an intimate connection between our beliefs and the state
of our health. That the values and beliefs we hold dear to
our hearts could be detrimental to our health would seem
outrageous, if my own body had not provided proof.
My body has been my laboratory and teacher in how
false beliefs can lead to early onset of potentially severe
arthritis, the need for prescription lenses and arch supports, chronic constipation and back pain.
During the past 36 years of daily emotional processing
(Gestalt) in order to liberate myself spiritually, mentally
and emotionally, my body slowly and miraculously began
to rejuvenate itself. After more than 50 years wear, I was
able to discard my eyeglasses and arch supports; back pain
and constipation are ancient history now. My blood pressure is that of a 21 year old, my pulse of a 40 year old,
there is new hair growth on either side above my forehead and the incisor tooth in need of a root canal 30 years
ago is slowly returning to its natural colour. In August I
turned 78 years old.
The workshop arose from my desire to share the incredible learning and its practical applications I have gleaned
from my work and my dreams. Most specifically how
to align oneself and ones life with the universal laws of
creation.
Participants will be actively involved in measuring their
use of spiritual, mental and emotional energy against the
model of the universe. They will learn how to create environments (home, work, etc) and relationships for themselves that are beneficial and rewarding. The universal law
of free and fair exchange will guide you in determining
your donation at the end of the workshop.

Literacy-Training Program At
Nelson Public Library
According to Decoda Solutions for Literacy, more than

half a million people in British Columbia have challenges
with literacy, but it doesnt have to be that way: research
provides strong evidence for the contribution parentchild interaction especially reading makes to childrens literacy and language development, setting them up
for a stronger future.
A Storytime Workshop on Saturday, October 22 from 1
to 3 pm is aimed at early childhood educators, childcare
providers and anyone who works with children in the community. This is a free professional development opportunity that comes with a completion certificate at the end.
No one is born knowing how to be a storyteller, says
the Librarys Literacy Services coordinator Melodie Rae
Storey. As librarians, weve learned how and we want to
share our secrets.
The workshop is free of charge, but registration is
required by calling 250-352-6333.
