Aluminium-clad steel
or galvanised steel strands
Aluminium or
Aluminium-alloy strands
Materials
OPGW/OPPC of nkt cables are made of materials defined
in international standards:
aluminium and aluminium alloy: e.g. AL1, AL2, AL3
aluminium-clad steel: e.g. A20SA, 27SA
galvanised steel: e.g. ST1A, ST4A
Optical Fibres
nkt cables integrates optical fibres based on standards of
International Telecommunication Union (ITU) e.g.:
ITU-T G.652, Characteristics of a single-mode optical
fibre and cable
ITU-T G.655, Characteristics of a non-zero dispersionshifted single-mode optical fibre and cable
Other optical fibre types can be offered upon request.
International Standards
Our OPGW/OPPC is designed and produced in accordance to international standards and appropriate normative
references like:
IEC 60794-4 Sectional specification

The Accessories
Product Scope
The quality of the fibre optic protection decisively influences the systems reliability and long-term stability. The
selection of the respective fibre optic joint box technology
for aerial cables has a decisive influence on the performance and service reliability of the entire communication
system.
Design
The fibre optic joint boxes of nkt cables perfectly protect
optical fibres from water and humidity by providing an
extreme high tightness class of IP 67. By the use of aluminium cast housing, a maximum mechanical protection
surrounds the sensitive optical fibre connections.
Benefits of VALCONNECT:

Engineering Works
The services of nkt cables include various tasks beginning with consultation of the clients. Design and calculations are made to prepare a solid basis for the selection
of optimum solution.
The success and acceptance as high-tech partner based
on customer-specific and economical solutions in creating optical cables and their accessories. Customised and
economical solutions are engineered by highly experienced staff using state-of-the-art software for construction
and design, calculations of sags and tensile loads as well
as the nkt cables' high-standard test labs for tensile and
routine tests including a climatic chamber.
Making use of nkt cables expertise and engineering
assistance already during the design phase, is the first
step to finalise a successful project.
Installation Works
Installation works including splicing of nkt cables OPGW
Joint Boxes, OPPC Termination Units and OPPC straight
Joints can be provided by excellent partners.
Supervision
From the beginning of OPGW/OPPC manufacture in 1989,
nkt cables has supervised the installation of their optical
cables on site and consequently has also carried out the
assembling of nkt-accessories, e.g. OPGW joint boxes and
OPPC Termination Units in substations.
Nowadays, most of our customers carry out the abovementioned assembling by themselves or they assign a
local installer as subcontractor. If necessary and required,
nkt cables will support and supervise the installation of
optical cables and the assembling of accessories on site.
Training
We carry out staff training for installation of OPGW and
OPPC as well as the assembling of accessories. This
assembling training will be performed at nkt cables in
Cologne. For nkt cables it is important to keep a close
contact to our customers and to make sure that our
accessories will be well-installed on site.

2006: Grid Monitoring for Overhead Lines
For optimum operation of a 400 kV transmission line
between the Czech Republic and Poland, the VALCAP
