The quality of all integrated circuits and components used for circuit board
construction shall comply with IEC Quality Assessment System for

Conduct in circuit testing of all printed circuit boards to ensure proper


mounting and correct value of all components.

Complete printed board product Burn-In test, 2 hours with full load at
50C.

Functionally test final printed circuit board where all tests and acceptance
criteria are pre-programmed and test results are stored as detailed quality
assurance data.

Combine-test all fully assembled controls for performance and


functionally at the manufacturers factory with fully loaded induction
motors. Analyze the combined test data to ensure adherence to quality
assurance specifications.

Frequency Inverters shall be suitable for use in either a Stand


Alonemode, complete with all necessary protection or able to interface
any system via a Building automation System without problem. The units
shall come in BACNET MS/TP & MODBUS as standard offer and have
built in Open Protocol System or a Protocol which compatible for
convenience of BCS integration.

To conduct the testing at the factories lab and field test upon acceptance
of the unit. The unit shall be tested to meet the relavant standard.

SERVICE CONDITION AND AC SUPPLY INPUT

The contractor shall verify in writing that the motors and variable
frequency inverters operate together as a system. Fully compatible and
without excessive noise or vibration.

The input voltage can be subjected to transients comprising voltage


depressions up to 10% of nominal voltage during motor starting, and to
voltage interruptions during system short circuits. Transient highfrequency voltages of 2kV peak may also be superimposed on the input
voltage as a consequence of system switching operations.

RELIABILITY, SAFETY AND QUALITY

The variable frequency inverters shall be designed to minimize any risk of


short circuit and to ensure personnel and operational safety under all
conditions of operation, inspection and maintenance.

All components shall be of quality and reliability that satisfies the


requirements of a dependable motor speed controller.

.3

The design and selection of components shall be based on achieving a


minimum lifetime of 20 years.

.4

Components materials shall be non-flame propagating, wherever


practicable.

.5

Electrolytes e.g. for capacitors shall be non-toxic and totally free from
polychlorinated biphenyl compliance with ISO 140001.

.6

The variable frequency inverters shall be immune to electrostatic


discharges and fast transients/bursts on either the supply, signal or
control lines in compliance with IEC/EN 61000-3-12.

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

Enclosure and Degree of Protection


.1

The variable frequency inverters shall have in-built cooling fans.

The variable frequency inverter enclosure shall provide a degree


of protection of IP54 in accordance with IEC 529.

The working temperature of the components shall not have a


detrimental effect on any other components.

Variable Frequency Inverter


.1

Provide 415 VAC variable frequency inverter of the pulse-width


modulated (PWM) design that operate directly from three phase,
415V AC, 50/60 Hz power supply. The frequency inverter voltage
range shall be 380-480V AC.

.2

The variable frequency inverter shall generate sine-coded,


adjustable voltage frequency three phase output for complete
speed control of the motors specified in the Contract Documents.
The variable frequency inverters shall maintain a 110% current
overload capacity for 60 seconds with automatic stall prevention to
prevent nuisance tripping during load or line side transient
conditions.

The variable frequency inverters shall not induce voltage line


matching distortion back to the building electrical power supply
and to maintain a power factor of not less than 0.95 throughout its
speed range.

The frequency inverter shall contain as standard within its


enclosure D.C. Link filtering with both inductive and capacitive
elements to control the main borne harmonics. The document
Electrical Supply Industry Recommendation G5/3 limits for
harmonics currents in the U.K. shall be used for the basis of
calculation of total Harmonics Distortion (T.H.D) for the point of
common coupling.

The frequency inverter shall work in conjunction with any I.E.C


standard design motor and shall not require the motor to be
derated, or cause the motor temperature to rise above the class
B rise expected on normal mains operation. The motor shall not
require an external blower even at slow speed running.

The frequency inverter shall comply with E.M.C (Electromagnetic


Compatibility). (R.F.I. control) document IEC61800-3:2004,
Category C1, Class B1 as an integral part of its design, and the
manufacturer must be able to issue a Certificate of Compliance on
request. The drive shall carry the C.E. Mark of Compliance.

The frequency inverter supplier must be able to provide Total


Harmonic Voltage Distortion upon request and must be able to
produce full torque at low speed to operate direct drive fans.

The frequency inverter shall be of sufficient capacity to provide a


quality wave form so as to achieve full output of the motor, without
causing additional heat rise. The operating conditions shall

The variable frequency inverter shall have the following basic


design:.1

Converter
Consists of a modularized diode rectifier and capacitor
assembly which will first convert, then filter and maintain a
fixed DC voltage source from the fixed voltage and
frequency input.

Inverter
Inverter used power transistor semiconductor with a
minimum rating of 1100 VAC on 415 VAC controls to invert
the converter generator fixed DC voltage into a sine-coded
pulse width modulated output. Minimum efficiency at 100%
load and 20% shall be 96% and 92% respectively.

Motor Protection
Frequency inverter shall model the motor in its software to
predict motor overheating without the use of thermistors in
the motor. When the overheat is predicted an alarm shall
be initiated.

Control Logic
Consists of a single printed circuit board and incorporates
microcomputer central processing unit to control all
inverter, converter, base drive and external interface
functions.

Terminal strip for input signals from Building Control


System or remote start/stop and speed control signal
capabilities.

The frequency controller shall be equipped with a RS 485


serial communication port. It shall be supplied with
software to interface with the BCS to display all monitoring,
fault, alarm and status signals. The software shall allow
parameter changes to be made to the frequency converter
settings as well as storage of each controllers operating
and setup parameters. The protocol must be selectable
and shall include the popular protocols available in the
Malaysian market. In addition, a LonMark certified option
must be available for the converter to secure easy
implementation in a LonWorks network.
Short circuiting of the control terminals shall not damage
the control card.

Galvanic Isolation
Full galvanic protection between power and control
components shall be incorporated to ensure compliance
with VDE 0160 P.E.L.V (protective extra low voltage) or
equal to prevent damage to BAS interface. Galvanic
isolation is attained when voltage flashover between two
current circuits is prevented when exposed to a predetermined test voltage. This is achieved by using signal
and power isolation transformer and leakage paths with a
minimum width of 10.4mm.

P.I.D Control
The design shall include a full minimum 2 control (P.I. or
P.I.D) as standard to provide closed loop control direct
from a signal transmitter without the need for external
signal conditioning.

Motor Line Coils


Frequency inverter shall incorporate built-in motor line coils
to limit the rate of rise of the voltage upon initials starting of
the frequency inverter. The motor coils shall be designed
to achieve the following criteria;

Frequency inverter shall have a dual 5%


impedance DC
link reactor or swinging chokes on the positive and
negative rails of the DC bus to minimize power line
harmonics and protect the frequency inverter from
powerline transients. The choke shall be non-saturating.
Swinging chokes that do not provide full harmonic filtering
throughout the entire load range are not acceptable.

Frequency inverter with saturing (non-linear) DC link


reactors shall require an additional 3% AC line reactor to
provide acceptable harmonic performance at full load,
where harmonic performance is most critical.

Features

The variable frequency inverter shall have the following minimum

The VSD shall include a motor flux optimization circuit that


will automatically reduce applied motor voltage to the
motor to reduce energy consumption by up to 10%.

(7) segment digital display motor frequency, current,
voltage, RPM, torque and 4 line LCD readout displaying:
Display able to monitor percentage, Kwhr, Run-hour etc.
The frequency controller shall log and display Total
kWhrs and Total Hours Run by the motor without
additional instrumentation.

The variable frequency inverter shall have the following protective

Heat sink overtemperature protection. If the temperature of


the inverter heat sink rises to 80C, the frequency inverter
shall automatically reduce its carrier frequency to reduce
the heat sink temperature. It shall also be possible to
program the inverter so that it reduces its output current
limit value if the inverter temperature becomes too high.

a start signal without a motor connected.

The frequency inverter shall include a A.E.O. (Automatic Energy


Optimization) as a standard to automically and continuously
monitor the motors speed and load to adjust the applied voltage
to maximize energy savings.

3.0

EXECUTION

3.1

INSTALLATION
.1

Install variable frequency converters in accordance with the


manufacturers instructions. The installation shall be checked by the
manufacturers representative prior to commissioning.

.2

Provide motor starters with thermal overloads on the line side of the
converter. Set the overloads for the full rated current of the motor.

.3

Power cables from the mechanical switchboard to the converter and from
the converter to the motor shall be single or multicore PVC cables (fire
rated cables for fire rated fans application) in an earthed steel conduit
containing only the power cables from the switchboard to the converter
and an earthed steel conduit containing only the power cables from the
converter to the motor.

Earth the converter cabinet and the steel cable conduits to the main
electrical earthing bar using minimum 6mm2 wire.

Install control and instrumentation wiring in shielded cables separate from


power cables. Earth the shields at the converter cabinet only. Do not
multiple earth individual cables.

Provide analog or digital load indication, connected to the converters load


output
terminals
in
accordance
with
the
manufacturers
recommendations.
