3. List the various weighted residual methods and explain about each of them.
4. A simply supported beam is subjected to an u.d.l. of w/unit length over its entire span.
Determine bending moment and deflection at its mid span using Rayleigh Ritz method.
5. A wall of 0.6 m thickness is having a thermal conductivity of 1.2 W/mK. It is
insulated by another wall of thickness 0.06 m with thermal conductivity of 0.3 W/mK. The
wall inner surface temperature is 1000 and outside insulation wall with thermal coefficient of 35 W/m2 K is exposed to atmosphere at 30. Calculate the nodal temperatures.
6. A simply supported beam is having the following dimensions: length 1 m, area of
cross section 30 cm2, moment of inertia 100 mm4, Youngs modulus 2 X 1011
N/mm2, density 7800 kg/m3. Determine the natural frequencies using lumped mass
matrix and consistent mass matrix.
7. A tapered steel rod of uniform thickness 25 mm is fixed at its larger width side. The
dimensions are: overall length is 700 mm, larger width is 150 mm and smaller width is 75
mm. In addition to self-weight, it is subjected to a point load of 300 N acting at midpoint of
a plane 300 mm from fixed surface. Using two finite elements, calculate the reaction forces.
Assume E= 2 X 105 N/mm2, weight density is 0.82 X 10-4 N/mm3.
8. Derive the shape functions for a three noded quadratic bar element.
9. A thin plate is subjected to traction as shown. Calculate global stiffness matrix.
10. Determine the stiffness matrix for a CST element under plane stress with co-ordinates of
(20,30), (80,30) and (50,120). Assume E = 210 GPa, =0.25 and t = 10 mm. All dimensions
are in mm.
11. Compute the element matrix and vectors for the element shown in figure when edges 2-3
and 3-1 experience convection heat loss.
12. Derive stress strain relation matrix for a 2D element under plane stress condition.
13. For an axisymmetric element with co-ordinates (0,0), (50,0) and (50,50) determine the
stiffness matrix. Assume E = 200 GPa, =0.25. All co-ordinates in mm.
14. For a CST element under plane stress condition, the co-ordinates are (20,30), (80,30),
(50,120). The nodal displacements are u1=2 mm, v1 = 1mm, u2=0.5mm, v2=0mm, u3=3mm,
v3=1mm. Calculate the element stresses and the principal angle. Assume E = 201 GPa, =
0.25, t = 10mm. All dimensions are in mm .

19. Derive stiffness equation for four noded isoparametric quadrilateral element For the
isoparametric quadrilateral element shown, determine local co-ordinates of point P which
has Cartesian co-ordinates of (7,4).
