Pythagorean Theorem
Nasr al-Din al-Tusis Proof of the Pythagorean Theorem.
Nasr al-Din al-Tusi (died 1274 AD) was a renowned Iranian Muslim
Mathematician.
Pythagorean Theorem
"In any right triangle, the area of the square whose side is the hypotenuse is
equal to the sum of the area of the square on the two other sides."
This theorem is commonly called the "Pythagorean theorem" in western
countries, named after the Greek mathematician Pythagoras.
However, the theorem was well known long before the time of Pythagoras.
Megalithic monuments from 4000 BC in Egypt, and the British Islands from ca.
2500 BC showed right triangles with integer sides. The Middle KingdomEgyptian
papyrus Berlin 6619, written between 2000 - 1786 BC, shows a problem whose
solution is a Pythagorean triple.

The cuneiform tablet Plimpton 322 (Mesopotamia between 1900 and 1600 BC)
contains a table, listing in the two middle columns numbers that satisfy the
Pythagorean Theorem. However, the merit of bringing this knowledge to Greece
and, even more, having shown that the theorem holds for any rectangular
triangle is attributed to Pythagoras, as attested by Cicero (On the Nature of the
Gods III. 88) and Plutarch (Symposiacs VIII). Thus it was rightfully named after
the philosopher by Proclus (412-484 AD).
