Description
Students read two input texts similar to those used in Part 8. They then complete some notes
and using these texts before discussing their answers and negotiating a compromise.
Similarities with the exam task are drawn out throughout the activity.

Procedure
1. Introduce the topic of parties by asking students who has been to a party recently,
where it was, what they did at the party, who was there etc. Ask students if they
prefer friends or family parties.
2. Tell students that they are going to read an invitation to a birthday barbecue from a
girl called Sara, and a note from a friend arranging to go to the party together. Divide
the class into two groups, A and B..
3. Give each student a copy of the students worksheet. Students in Group A should
have worksheet A, and students in Group B should have worksheet B. Students can
work in pairs or threes within their group.
4. Ask all the students to look at the two texts on their worksheets (Exercise 1). Check
what type of texts they are (an invitation to a party and a note from a friend). Point out
that in KET for Schools Reading & Writing Part 8, they will be given one or two texts
similar to these (input texts) which they will have to read and understand. Allow a few
minutes for them to read the texts now and talk to their partners about anything they
need to check. If necessary, check that students understand the meaning of the
words in the invitation. E.g.
barbecue: Where do you have a barbecue? (outside) What do you usually
cook on a barbecue? (meat, fish) Do you like barbecues?;
Let me know if you can come: Do you have to answer the invitation?
(yes); Which words mean tell me? (let me know).
5. Now look at Exercise 2. Point out that in Part 8 of the KET Reading & Writing test,
they need to use the information from the input text or texts to complete a note, form,
diary entry, etc. In this activity, they will do a similar task by completing a their own

notes about the party with the information specified in Exercise 2. This is similar to
the exam task. You may wish to show the sample task from p.20 of the KET for
Schools handbook now, so students can see the exam layout.
6. Point out to students that for each question there are two or more possibilities in the
advertisement and/or the note. They must read carefully to decide which of the
alternatives their friend suggests, and which the friend doesnt want. The same
applies to the Part 8 task in KET for Schools Reading & Writing. Allow a few minutes
for students to complete the diaries and to check their answers in their 2s/3s.
7. Tell the class theyre going to meet up with their friend and confirm the details of
getting to the party. Practise the language of making and responding to suggestions/
arrangements with the class. For example:
Why dont we meet at 1 oclock?
Im afraid I cant.
8. Re-organise the class into pairs with one A and one B. They should role-play a
conversation about getting to the party, using the information in their notes. They will
discover they have different information, and they need to agree on the arrangements
for going to the barbecue (they will have to compromise).
