Academy
E N R I C H M E N T S
Program Overview
Enrichments are a vital and exciting part of the
International Academy experience. Students
are exposed to new, intellectually challenging
concepts and physical challenges delivered in a
positive
and
supportive
environment.
Participants are encouraged to use this program
as an opportunity to develop their personal
interests, sample new experiences and
challenge themselves outside their normal
range of interests.
The Enrichment Program offers a variety of
educational experiences in the arts, culture,
history, language, science, technology and
domestic and international travel.
Each
enrichment course is about twenty hours long
and is taught by a qualified instructor.
Graduation Requirement Enrichments are a
graduation requirement of the International
Academy (IA). Students who attend the IA for
four years must complete six different
enrichments, including one career mentorship.
Requirements for transfer students are reduced
in proportion to the time they spend at the IA.
Freshman transferring to the school in January
must complete five, new sophomores must
complete four, new juniors must complete two
and new seniors must complete one. Every
student must complete one career mentorship.
Recommended Completion Schedule It is
recommended that students in grades nine and
ten complete a minimum of two enrichments in
each of these two years. Students in grades
eleven and twelve should complete one
enrichment course in each year. Students may
use enrichment credit in both eleventh and
twelfth grade to earn enrichment credit and
CAS hours simultaneously.
Enrichment Credit To earn enrichment class

credit, students must actively participate,
complete all work assigned, and meet
attendance requirements. Upon conclusion of
the program, students must submit an online
Enrichment Evaluation/Reflection on Moodle.
Reflective components vary from just the
evaluations to performances and finished pieces
of work. Enrichments must be completed
during the school year in which they were taken.
Attendance Policy Students may only be
absent for up to two hours of a class and must
make up any work they missed. Students with
multiple absences will not receive credit and no
refund will be issued. Exceptions will be made
for documented illness and family emergencies.
Eligibility Students may register for
enrichments at any campus, unless otherwise
noted. Please note that several of the programs
give preference to seniors and juniors.
International and domestic trips may have
additional applications for consideration. Each
individual trip will have its own requirements
and application process.
Mentorships Students may fulfill their
mentorship requirement by either taking an
enrichment program that qualifies as a
mentorship or completing an Independent
Career Mentorship. Mentorship programs are
described in detail on our registration system.
Independent Career Mentorship packets are
posted on our website and are available in the
Enrichment Office. Students may begin their
mentorship in the second semester of their
sophomore year.
Independent Enrichments Current students
who participate in activities planned by outside
organizations that also meet the requirements
of an enrichment program can receive credit as
an Independent Enrichment. These programs
must be approved at least 30 days in advance
by the Enrichment Coordinator. Applications
are available on our website and from the
Enrichment Office.
Self-Designed Enrichments If a current

student participates in a self-directed activity
that challenges them beyond their normal daily
routine and has a strong educational
component, they may be able to receive credit
for a Self-Designed enrichment. These must be
approved at least 30 days in advance by the
Enrichment Coordinator.

Online Registration To register for an
enrichment program, please visit our online
registration system at www.iaenrichments.org.
Here, you will find complete and detailed
information about all of our offerings, including
course descriptions, class fees, locations,
instructors, and more. We accept MasterCard
Visa, checks, and cash. For your convenience
we enter your students information into the
enrichment system for you. Freshmen may
begin registration when they receive their user
name and password after school begins in
August. Usernames are parent email addresses,
so please be sure to provide us with an email
address that is checked regularly. If you forget
your password, please click on Need Help
Logging in on the home page, then Forgot
your Password?. If you forget your user name,
please contact the Enrichment Office and we
will be happy to look it up for you.
Refund Policy The most common problem
students have with enrichments is conflicting
schedules. It is important to note class dates in

your calendar and notify us as soon as a conflict
arises. You must withdraw three weeks prior to
the start date of an enrichment class to be
eligible for a refund. Refunds will also be issued
in the following circumstances: a student
withdraws from the IA before the beginning of
an enrichment; an enrichment is cancelled; a
student is unable to attend due to a family
emergency or illness (a full or partial refund will
be given depending expenses already incurred
for the program).
About Us The Enrichment Office is located in
the International Center at the Okma Campus.
We have an Enrichment Coordinator, Saira Latif,
and an Enrichment Technician. Ms. Latif also
maintains an office at the East and West
campuses to ensure that all IA students have
access to enrichment support. The Enrichment
Office is closed during the month of July.

Dear 9th Grade Parent,

We are thrilled that your child is joining the IA community and look forward to guiding them throughout the next
four years. The IA has some unique policies that are in place to insure the long-term success of our students. During
the first weeks of school your son/daughter will receive the student guidebook which outlines all of these policies
and procedures. Given its detailed nature, the counseling department has highlighted some of the major points
below to ensure you are fully informed, but we hope you read through the whole guidebook.
Freshman Focus:
Please refer to the timeline on the counseling page at www.iatoday.org under What should I be doing this Year to
help determine what your child should focus on as a freshman. This information is also available on the homepage
of your students Naviance account (login information will be provided in late September). We believe students
should focus on transitioning to the IA curriculum, exploring extracurricular activities, and building relationships.
Please help your student develop a strong organizational system to enable him/her to stay on top of the work.
College & Career Planning:
Are you wondering what your son/daughter should be doing in terms of college admission this year? Freshmen will
be provided with a Naviance account in September to utilize as a college planning tool. Counselors will introduce
this to them in a classroom lesson in September. We do not emphasize college planning in the 9th grade, as the
successful transition to high school is most important.
Standardized Testing:
The state of Michigan has changed the standardized testing suggestion for the 9th grade. All 9th grade students will
take the PSAT 9 at school in April on a week day. This is a practice SAT designed specifically for freshmen. There
will be no fee for the test. More information will follow later in the year. No other testing is recommended.
Attendance:
Refer to the attendance policy in the guidebook that your student will receive the first week of school. Remember to
call the attendance line any time your child is absent, late to school, or leaving school early.
Grading Policies:
Please familiarize yourself with both the Grading Policy and the Failure and Low Grade Policy sections in the
guidebook.
Parental Involvement:
There are many opportunities for parents to be involved in the school community. Please refer to the Parent
Involvement section in the guidebook to learn how to become an active community member.

Sophomore Focus:
Please refer to the sophomore to-do list on the Naviance homepage and the counseling section of the IA

Students will be utilizing Naviance to continue their post-secondary planning. Please encourage them to
become familiar with all of the resources available in Naviance. The students were introduced to Naviance last
year and all parents also have their own account. If you need your account information, please email your
childs counselor.
10th graders will take the PSAT 10 in April at school on a weekday. The PSAT 10 is a practice SAT designed
for sophomores. More information will follow later in the year. No other testing is recommended.
IB Requirements:
10th grade students begin selecting IB courses during second semester of this year. Sophomores will work on
their Personal Projects in their MYP Product Team class during the first semester. Please be sure to attend the
IB Information Night in March.

We are thrilled to work with your student as he/she begins the IB journey. This is an exciting and challenging
time for our students. Please encourage your child to maintain open communication with both teachers and
counselors so that we can offer support when needed. The IA has some unique policies and procedures that are
in place to ensure the long-term success of our students. Your son/daughter will again receive the student
guidebook which outlines all of these policies and procedures. Given its detailed nature, the counseling
department has highlighted some of the major points below to ensure you are fully informed, although we hope
you read the whole book.
Junior Focus:
Please refer to Junior to-do list on the homepage of your students Naviance account and on the counseling
page of the IA website to help determine what your child should focus on as a junior.
Optional individual junior college planning meetings will begin in late January/early February. You will receive
a letter explaining the process for making the appointment, if you so desire. In the meantime, your student
should be utilizing Naviance which is an excellent tool in the college search process. We encourage you to
attend the Financial Aid and College Admissions Panel evening programs in the fall. We also encourage the
students to attend the school visits from the college admissions representatives in the fall and also attend local
college fairs.
This is one of the busiest years for standardized testing. A detailed list of what to expect this year is in the
Standardized Testing section of your students Naviance account. Please refer to the ideal standardized testing
timeline to be informed of what to expect. A separate letter will be sent home detailing information about the
October 19th PSAT to be taken at school. All juniors will take a free, college-reportable SAT test during the
Michigan Merit Exam testing period in April - no registration will be necessary.
IB Requirements:
Students will continuously work on their IB Courses. Students will work on CAS hours & reflections from the
1st day of junior year through March 15th of senior year. Juniors will participate in the CAS Kick off Service
project on August 19. We will provide detailed information regarding the complete CAS requirement after our
return in late August. Students will begin working on the Extended Essay in April of junior year and will
complete it in October of senior year. Please encourage your student to use solid time management and
organizational skills to complete these requirements.

College applications are now requiring much of your students free time. Please encourage your student to
continue to utilize all of the resources in Naviance. In addition, your student may want to meet with his/her
counselor to verify applications and final details. Take the guesswork out of it and ask questions if there is any
uncertainty. Be aware of deadlines. Plan to attend the Financial Aid evening program in September and the
College Panel Night in October

Unless a student is re-taking the ACT/SAT or taking SAT II subject tests, the only standardized tests this year
are the IB Exams in May. Refer to the counseling website for more information. Students should be sure to
send test scores directly from the testing organization to the colleges to which they apply (dont wait on this
step).
IB Requirements:
Students will continuously work on their IB Courses with grades at C- or better. Students will work on CAS
experiences & reflections through March 15th. Students will complete their Extended Essay by October of
senior year. Seniors will pick their SL/HL exam subjects and pay for their IB tests early in first semester.

Dear Student and Parent:

On the reverse side please find the application and regulations for a student parking pass for the IA
2016-2017 school year. If you would like to drive to school, you must purchase a parking pass. Please
complete the application, sign it, and bring it with a copy of your drivers license and registration to
Mrs. Bourdeau in the Main Office. Parking Permits will cost $20.00 each and will be available for
purchase after school beginning Tuesday, August 16, 2016. Effective August 29, 2016 tickets/stickers
will be issued to any vehicle without a parking pass. The parking lot will be monitored by staff
members. Any student receiving more than three (3) tickets will be fined and a letter will be sent home
to the parent/guardian.

School Parking Regulations

Rules Regarding Student Driving, Parking and Use of Vehicles are specified in detail in
the Code of Conduct.
1. All automobiles parked on the school grounds must be registered with the school and must visibly
display the current permit.
2. Parking is strictly limited to the student parking area. FACULTY parking is marked accordingly.
3. All students must be licensed and covered by insurance. The school is not responsible for the
automobile or its contents.
4. There is to be no loitering in the parking lot or visitation of car without permission.
5. There will be no driving over 10 miles per hour, or any form of reckless driving on school grounds.
6. Student vehicles may be subject to search if there are reasonable grounds to believe that drugs,
alcohol, stolen property or other contraband might be present in that vehicle.
7. Parking regulations are strictly enforced. It is considered a privilege to park on school grounds.
Suspension of driving privileges, towing/ticketing of vehicles and/or suspension from school may
occur when violations of these regulations occur. Ticketing and/or towing will be at students
expense.
8. Students applying for and receiving permits fully understand their responsibility in following these
rules.
Vehicle Violation Fines:

Driver is responsible for fines. The cost of a fine is $5.00, if paid within 5 days. $8.00, if paid after that
timeframe. Students who wish to dispute the vehicle violation fine must do so within three (3) days to the
associate principal. Fines are to be considered the same as any other outstanding school obligation in
terms of withholding diplomas, report cards, transcripts, etc. Violation fines for various violations to
include, but not limited to the following:
Parking in an unauthorized area
Failure to have a visibly displayed parking pass or temporary pass
Speeding/careless driving
Two violations will result in an after school detention. Four (4) concurrent overdue notices will result in the
loss of driving privileges. Please reference the student guidebook for additional parking regulations.

and I do not have any outstanding parking fines. I also understand that there will
be a $20.00 replacement cost for lost parking passes.

for Troy Youth and Families!
Troy Youth Assistance is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization committed to strengthening youth
and families by preventing and reducing juvenile delinquency, child neglect and child abuse
through community involvement. It is one of 26 Youth Assistance programs in Oakland County,
tri-sponsored by the Oakland County Circuit Court-Family Division, the Troy School District, and
the City of Troy. The Oakland County Board of Commissioners provides major funding for a
professional counselor in each unit. Volunteers work with the professional counselor to plan
and sponsor local prevention programs for youth and their families.
Troy Youth Assistance offers classes, workshops and presentations which focus on
improving parent-child relationships, understanding child development, enhancing
parenting skills, managing family technology, and peer pressure.
We match adult volunteers, one-to-one, with youth ages 5 to 16.
Troy Youth Assistance provides scholarships to youth who would benefit from positive
learning experiences designed to enhance their self-esteem or to develop a specific skill.
Youth, with adult guidance, participate in projects to interact positively with one another
and their community.
Annually, Troy Youth Assistance holds the TYA Youth Recognition Event to recognize
young people in Troy who make positive contributions to their community. Nominations
come from schools, hospitals, churches, fire and police departments, and private citizens
who have made note of a youths community service, heroic actions, or personal
achievements.
