Chapter 1 provides general procedures for required items and suggestions for installation
configuration on various platforms.
Chapter 2 provides detailed instructions for installations, connecting to license server, and invoking
HyperWorks application on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X supported platforms.
Appendices provide additional information about HyperWorks applications, including examples of
step-by-step installations of HyperWorks on various platforms.
The details of installing RADIOSS HMPP, OptiStruct SPMD, and configuration of AcuSolve products are
documented in the HyperWorks 14.0 Advanced Installation Guide.
HyperWorks 14.0 uses InstallAnywhere 2014 SP1 as its installation tool. The HyperWorks 14.0
installers are InstallAnywhere web installers. InstallAnywhere provides a consistent look and feel of the
HyperWorks installation wizard across all platforms supported by Altair HyperWorks products.
In order to run HyperWorks 14.0 applications, you need to connect the applications to the Altair
License Management System 12.2 (or higher, using the latest version is recommended). Details of the
installation and how to start the Altair License Manager can be found in the Altair License
Management System 12.2 Installation Guide. The license packages are available on the Altair web site
(www.altairhyperworks.com) or Altair Connect.
About HyperWorks
HyperWorks is a comprehensive simulation platform for rapid design exploration and decisionmaking. HyperWorks provides a tightly integrated suite of best-in-class tools for all facets of the
simulation process: modeling, analysis, optimization, visualization, reporting and collaborative
simulation management. Leveraging a revolutionary pay-per-usage licensing model, HyperWorks
delivers maximum value and flexibility for customers worldwide.
The 14.0 version of the HyperWorks suite offers many new functionalities in such areas as lightweight
design, composites structures analysis, efficient modeling and meshing, multiphysics and multidisciplinary analysis, structural optimization and design exploration.
HyperWorks comprises a suite of applications that includes HyperMesh, HyperCrash, OptiStruct,
RADIOSS, HyperView, HyperView Player, HyperStudy, HyperGraph, MotionView,
MotionSolve, HyperForm, HyperXtrude, Process Manager, Templex, MediaView,
BatchMesher, TextView, TableView, HyperMath, Manufacturing Solutions, HyperWeld,
HyperMold, solidThinking Evolve, solidThinking Inspire, Durability Director, Suspension
Director, AcuSolve, and AcuConsole, SimLab, FEKO, and Virtual Wind Tunnel, providing
modeling and assembly, robust design and optimization, design analysis, visualization and reporting,
virtual manufacturing, and automation and data management.
HyperWorks 14.0 licensing is based on HyperWorks Units (HWUs). HyperWorks unit licenses are
server licenses. Customers can launch any application within the HyperWorks suite as long as there
are sufficient HyperWorks units to grant the license check out.
To invoke HyperWorks 14.0 applications, after completing the HyperWorks 14.0 installation, you need
to point the applications to an activated Altair License Manager or a valid node stand-alone license by
setting the proper environment variable.
The HyperWorks 14.0 package does not include the license package that sets up the Altair License
Manager. Download the Altair license package from Altair web site and follow the Altair License
Management System 12.2 Installation and Operation Guide to install and activate the Altair License
Manager properly.
In some cases, Altair provides feature based licenses, which allow a particular application to run as
long as the feature exists in the license file. A feature license is a standalone license that does not
consume HyperWorks units.
Questions regarding the software and license installation may be directed to Altair Support. See the
Contact page for further contact information.

Hardware Platforms
Operation system additions
Support for the following platforms has been added:
Installation
HyperWorks 14.0 suite contains several independent product packages. This gives you the flexibility to
download desired packages as needed. Any HyperWorks 14.0 standalone SA update package can be
installed either on top of an existing 14.0 installation, or can be installed independently without the
prerequisite of a 14.0 base. Multiple product SA updates can now be installed concurrently with or
without the 14.0 base.
HyperWorks 14.0 installer brings the robust capabilities and features of the HyperWorks 13.0 installer
as well as the additional support for the HotFix update installation. The HotFix installers are quick patch
HyperWorks 14.0 Installation Guide
type installers that are used to install on top of a prerequisite base installation, unlike the other full
installers. These are marked with the word hotfix in the installer name and include the quick fixes
and features to better suit your needs.
Installation and packaging
Installation/uninstallation
Upgraded the HyperWorks installers to the InstallAnywhere 2014 SP1 web installers
Invoking
Added file associations for .hm, .mdl, and .mvw to open in HyperWorks Desktop.
Added better font size management for the HyperWorks Desktops applications, including
HyperMesh under Linux and Mac OS X user environment where the default size is set to a 9
point font.
Resolved issues
Fixed issues on Windows and Linux only where the Summary panel available disk space
usage reported a -0 on very large hard disks.
On Linux, when installing using the console mode, the Help Configuration prompt will no
longer add another set of double quotes if the Back command is used.
On Linux, there are no longer duplicate installation bars when the Back command is used
from the Summary panel.
On Linux during a console mode install, the installer will now allow users to go back past the
Install Pick List panel.
Correct Linux and Mac OS X read + execute permissions of the sub installers when using
the master installer.
When installing using the master installer, you can now cancel your installation at any time.
In Mac OS X 10.9 and higher the installer will still report -0 on the Summary panel due to
a bug in InstallAnywhere 2014 SP1 under certain circumstances.
Using the Back option during an installer may not reset the installer variables correctly.
On Linux, during a console mode install, when using a response file output the Help
Configuration in the file may not write out correctly.
If there is not enough TMP/TEMP space on the main drive (that is, C: under Windows), then
the installer will prompt for the user to input to a new location. Some Java TMP/TEMP space
will still try to go to the main drive even when selecting this new location.
When clicking on Cancel to stop an installation via the Master installer, the files that were
already installed are not cleaned up, but the files in the TMP/TEMP folder are cleaned up.
You will need to uninstall/delete the installed files from the chosen install folder manually if
Cancel was used.
The HyperWorks installers do not support the use of the default InstallAnywhere
installer.properties files. We request that a unique name is used when using a response
file, (for example, installer_hw12.properties) and to use it with the -f
<path_to_file>/<filename> command line option.
For NETSETUP client installs, a UNC path must be used to get to the server installation path
through Windows Explorer or Windows Network. Note, using mapped drive letters or
variables is not currently supported in the installer.
With some versions of Gnome, there is a bug where the Linux icons are not placed in a
hierarchy. Instead, they are placed in Other with a flat layout, meaning that all the icons
appear at the same folder level in Other.
The installer does not run the Linux icon installation by default; the user must run the icon
installer.
On Windows 8, desktop and Start Menu icons are blank for server and client installations.
This can be resolved by changing the Windows File Explorer policy to Allow the use of
remote paths in file shortcut icons.
Software Changes
Installation/Uninstallation
Upgraded the HyperWorks installers to the InstallAnywhere 2014 SP1 web install
Fixed some grammatical text errors and some installer bugs in the Linux console mode
installers
Invoking
Added better version information to the shortcuts for the Windows 8.1 Start Menu and Metro
style Tiles Menu
Added better font size management for the HyperWorks Desktops applications including
HyperMesh under a Linux and Mac OS X user environment where the default size is set to a 9
point font instead of using a pixel font size
Added Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 support. HyperWorks only officially supports
Windows 8.1.
On Linux during a console mode install, the installer will now allow users to go back past the
Install Pick List panel.
Fixed issues only on Windows and Linux platforms where the Summary Panel disk space usage
reported a -0 on very large hard disks (still an issue on Mac OS X).
On Linux, when installing using the console mode, the Help Configuration prompt will no longer
add another set of double quotes on the user-defined path to installed help if the back
command is used.
10
On Linux, there are no longer duplicate progress install bars when the back command is used
from the Summary Panel.
Correct Linux and Mac OS X read + execute permissions of the sub installers are set when
using the master installer.
In Mac OS X 10.9 and higher the installer will still report -0 on the Summary Panel due to a
bug in InstallAnywhere 2014 SP1.
Using the Back option during an installer may not reset the installer variables correctly if
changes are made and the install session is continued.
On Linux, during a console mode install, when using a response file output command -r the
Help Configuration in the response file may not write out correctly.
If there is not enough TMP/TEMP space on the main drive (for example, C: under Windows),
then the installer will prompt for user input to a new location. Some Java TMP/TEMP space will
still try to go to the main drive even when selecting this new location.
When clicking on the Cancel button to stop an installation via the Master installer does not
clean up the already installed files, but does clean up the files in the TMP/TEMP folder. You will
need to uninstall/delete the installed files from the chosen install folder manually if Cancel was
used.
When clicking on the Cancel button to stop an installation the Add/Remove uninstaller icon may
no longer function correctly and manual removal of the installed files would be necessary.
The HyperWorks installers do not support the use of the default InstallAnywhere
installer.properties files. We request that a unique name is used when using a response
file; for example, installer_hw14.properties, and to use it with the -f
<path_to_file>/<filename> command line option.
For NETSETUP client installs from a server installation location of HyperWorks, a UNC path must
be used to get to the Server installation path through Windows Explorer or Windows Network.
Note, using mapped drive letters or variables is not currently supported in the client installer
NETSETUP.
On Linux and Mac OS X there is an issue with using the Master installer with the variable
DIATEMPDIR to a custom temporary directory location. All sub-installers will try to use /tmp
from the machine running the installers for temporary installer files.
11
Install and activate an Altair 12.2 (or higher, using the latest version is recommended) License
Manager if one does not already exist.
Set an environment variable that points the HyperWorks 14.0 application to an activated and
running Altair license server.
The software to install Altair License Manager is a separate package from the HyperWorks 14.0
application packages. Download the Altair license package from the Altair web site and follow
the Altair License Management System version 12.2 Installation and Operation Guide to install
and start the Altair License Manager properly.
HyperWorks 14.0 and, Altair License Manager software, delivered from Altair in USB/DVD
format or HyperWorks 14.0 image packages downloaded from the Altair web site
(www.altairhyperworks.com) or Altair Connect.
Sufficient disk space for install: Full suite of HyperWorks 14.0 applications and help files needs
4 GB of temp space. The temp files are removed after successful completion of an installation.
The information in this chapter regarding proper media and hardware requirements will help prepare
users for a successful HyperWorks installation. Go to Chapter 2 for detailed information on installing
HyperWorks 14.0 on various platforms.

1.1a
Altair supports a subset of the available HOSTID values from X-Formation as well as hardware license
dongles (USB keys) on some platforms. In order to use a dongle you must have a free/open USB port
on the machine that will be your license server.
If you have purchased a hardware dongle to use for licensing, you must obtain the dongle ID via the
software before requesting your license file. Hardware dongles are supported on the following
platforms:
Windows
OS X
13
In order for the dongle to function properly, you must first install the correct drivers for your platform.
These drives are available from Aladdin, the manufacturer of the key. Download and install the driver
according the directions available at the following URL:
http://www.aladdin.com/support/hasp/enduser.aspx
Once the driver is installed and the dongle is in place, use the almutil hostid command to query for
all the HOSTIDs on the machine and report the dongle HOSTID.
1.1b
Non-US Keyboards
HyperWorks ships with the keyboard configuration set for a US keyboard. Other countries (Germany,
for example) use extended keyboards to generate native characters not present in the US ASCII
character set. Use the following instructions for your operating system to install a local keyboard
configuration.
Windows 7
Follow these instructions to configure your non-US keyboard on Windows:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Click Change keyboards and select the proper one from the drop-down list.
5.
Click OK.
6.
Windows 8/8.1
Follow these instructions to configure your non-US keyboard on Windows:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Select Advanced settings and select the proper one from the drop-down list.
5.
Click Save.
14
You should not mix installers of different major release versions, for example 14.0
with 13.0 installers, updates and hotfixes. Placing the major installer versions in
separate folders prior to starting the installation will help alleviate issues and conflicts
with versioning during installation.
Two procedures are necessary to enable HyperWorks. First, using the installation configuration you
selected in Chapter 1 as a guide, install the HyperWorks software on your machine(s). Secondly, you
must be able to point to an activated license server that allows HyperWorks applications to draw
license units. Details of installing and activating the Altair License Manager are described in the
Altair License Management System 12.2 Installation and Operation Guide.
To perform a full HyperWorks installation, make sure you have downloaded all the files from the Altair
web site before you start the installation or have the USB/DVD HyperWorks media at hand.
HyperWorks 14.0 can be installed via a Graphical User Interface (GUI) mode, silent mode, or console
mode. The following sections describe how to install the software via the GUI, console and silent mode
methods.
The HyperWorks 14.0 Help is a browser-based HTML system that uses ActiveX on Windows and Java
Script on Linux and Mac OS X. It can be installed with the applications or installed alone behaving as
an online help server.
For Help network server installations make sure to have the Help UNC or network path prior to running
the installer. You will be prompted for this information during the install.
15
2.1
2.1a
HyperWorks 14.0 still has the ability to install the individual product installers separately from one
another, also referenced as sub-installers in this document, while also giving you an option to install all
of them at once via the Master installer in a batch-like mode (recommended). The Windows installers
have added the Altair Engineering, Inc. digital signatures for enhanced security.
Reference Table 1.0 below for specific file names and details on the product groups per individual subinstallers.
The HyperWorks Master installer, for example hw14.0_win64.exe for Windows, is a quick and easy
setup installer allowing for various combinations of the independent sub-installers to be installed at one
time. It is done without the need to wait for all the packages to extract prior to setting up the
installation, which should allow for a quick setup to install a complete HyperWorks 14.0 installation.
Using the Master installer is the recommended method for installing HyperWorks 14.0 products.
On the Mac OS X, there are two distinct file types per installer because of limitations in
InstallAnywhere implementations - a zip format and a bin format. The zip format is to be used for GUI
type installs (which actually extracts via Finder archive utility to an app installer format). The bin
format is used when launching the installer(s) from the command line. The bin format is also the
format used for the sub-installers in a Master installer set up on the Mac OS X.
An example of a complete HyperWorks 14.0 install (including Help Files) on Mac OS X using the Master
GUI installer would require the following files to be downloaded and residing in the same directory:
hwdesktop14.0_macosx64.bin
hwsolvers14.0_macosx64.bin

To install Help along with the application, download and place the Help files sub-installers
hwdesktophelp and hwsolvershelp files, which are executable files on Windows and bin file types on
Mac OS X and Linux, in the same residing directory as the HyperWorks Master installer. Help files
contain the help and tutorial model files. The user has the option to select and install complete Help
and tutorials or a combination of the two options.
2.1b
This section describes how to install the HyperWorks application. Complete the following steps to
extract and install the software.
1.
Log in to the machine on which the software is to be installed then insert the USB/DVD, or place
the downloaded files in a temporary directory. Below is an example of a directory with all the
required sub-installers for a complete HyperWorks 14.0 installation on a Windows 64-bit platform,
highlighting the master installer:
For a base Help Files install both the hwdesktophelp and hwsolvershelp sub-installers will
need to be installed together using the Master installer. For Manufacturing Solutions or
Engineering Solutions to be installed, the Master installer will have to be used together
with the hwdesktop and hwsolvers sub-installers.
Please make sure that the downloaded files have read + execute permissions before
continuing with an installation. On Windows, use Windows Explorer file properties to

The HyperView Player plugin for Microsoft Office documents and Internet Explorer is installed and
registered by default with the HyperView Player installation. In case of multiple HyperView/HyperView
Player installations, the user may need to manually register the latest HyperView Player plugin
following the steps below.
1.
Navigate to Start > All Programs > Altair HyperWorks 14.0 > Tools and click Register
HVPControl.
Note: Administrative elevation is needed for this action (right-click and Run as administrator)
2.
On Linux, please reference the web or local Help section for detailed information.
2.1e
Console mode installations mimic the default Graphical User Interface steps provided by the
HyperWorks installer but use only the standard input and output. The advantage to console mode
installation is that Linux users no longer need X-windows (X11) to run the installer.
Console mode allows for text to be output to the console terminal line-by-line. It does not allow for any
formatting, clearing of the screen, or positioning of the cursor. To trigger a console mode installer
from the command line, append the following command parameter to the installer: -i console.
24
2.1f
Silent mode enables the installer to run without any user interaction. A near-silent mode is possible on
Windows and Mac OS X.
On Mac OS X the silent mode can only be used with the bin file type sub-installer.
InstallAnywhere and HyperWorks end-user-defined variables may be set through command line
parameters or a properties response file.
Response files are created and used in silent mode since there is no end user interaction.
The installer runs either on the defaults provided by the installer package or by providing a response
file from which the installer retrieves the values for various InstallAnywhere and HyperWorks variables
used to control the install.
The installer automatically checks the residing directory for a file called installer.properties,
however, this file name and type is NOT supported by the HyperWorks installers and cannot reside in
the same folder as our installs.
The response file will need a unique name in order to work properly with the HyperWorks installers,
example, hw14_installer.properties, will work with the HyperWorks installer.
You can generate a response file from the installer by running through the installer with the following
command line syntax: -r "[FullPath]\hw14_installer.properties". The file will get created once
the installer is complete. To trigger a silent installer from the command line, type the following:
[InstallerName] i silent
You may also call a properties response file from the command line by typing:
[InstallerName] i silent f [FullPath]\hw14_installer.properties
An example of running a silent install using a properties response file located in C:\ResponseFiles
called hw14_installer.properties on Windows 64-bit:
hw14.0_win64.exe i silent f "C:\ResponseFiles\hw14_installer.properties"
NOTE: Use quotes around any directory and pathnames that may contain spaces.
2.1g
Response Files
Response files are used with the silent mode installers to give the default values of an install. The files
contain text in a simple key=value format. An example of a properties response file is shown below:
HyperWorks 14.0 Installation Guide
25
The values in the response files are all referenced from user input taken from a HyperWorks install and
used as default values toward future installs.
26
For example, the INSTALLER_UI value in the above example is set to silent. This negates the need to
use -i silent on the command line as a silent installer switch.
The installer will use double backslashes \\ on Windows platforms for the directory
names and forward slash / on Mac OS X platforms.
Spaces should not be used between the VARIABLE=VALUE statements in the response files

The Altair License Management System (ALM) provides a common units-based licensing model for
all Altair software related to CAE, on-demand computing, and business intelligence. This new system
has been designed to enable HyperWorks Partner Products (selected third party products) to be
licensed via HyperWorks Units as well.
The Altair License Management System is comprised of two components: the License Server and the
Usage Reporting System (URT). The license system is based on X-Formation's LM-X license server. The
URT is a java application that reports anonymous transactional logs to Altair. As part of the license
agreement that enables partner software to be used, product usage must be reported to Altair.
Version 12.2 of the ALM is based on X-Formations LM-X license management system version 4.4.9.
2.3b
In order for applications to use the ALS, the environment variable, ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH, must point
to the appropriate location. Multiple license paths are allowed and should be separated by a semicolon
(;) on Windows and a colon (:) on Linux/Mac OS X. The proper format for a network license location is
port@hostname. If you are using a local license file, simply set the value to the full pathname of the
file.
A few examples of license paths:
On Windows:
ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH=6200@server.foo.bar.com
ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH=6200@srv1;6200@srv2;6200@srv3
ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH=c:\Program Files\Altair\Licensing12.2\altair_lic.dat
On Linux:
ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH=6200@server.foo.bar.com
ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH=6200@srv1:6200@srv2:6200@srv3
ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH=/usr/local/altair/licensing12.2/altair_lic.dat
For High Availability License (HAL) System and/or Multiple Servers setups, list the three servers in the
order: primary; secondary; tertiary.
31
On Mac OS X:
ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH=6200@server.foo.bar.com
ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH=6200@srv1:6200@srv2:6200@srv3
ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH=/usr/local/altair/licensing12.2/altair_lic.dat
Under Mac OS X, HyperWorks will check for the ALM environment variable ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH in
the following locations (in this order):
1. $HOME/.profile
2. $HOME/.bashrc
3. $HOME/.tcshrc
4. $HOME/.cshrc
Where the $HOME represents the users home directory. Notice that these files are hidden files and the
variable needs to be set according to the appropriate command for the SHELL in use.
Examples of license paths:
BASH shell (.profile, .bashrc):
export ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH=6200@server.name.com
C shell (.tchsrc, .cshrc):
setenv ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH 6200@server.name.com
2.3c
Node-Locked License
For node-locked license (a license that is locked to a local machine), you can either place the license
file in the <install_dir>/altair/security/ directory, or set the environment variable,
ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH, to point to the appropriate location where the license file resides. The default
name that Altair products use for this license file is altair_lic.dat.

All HyperWorks applications start by running the appropriate script from the
<install_location>/altair/scripts directory. The scripts directory contains the launch procedure
for each HyperWorks application and tools such as hvtrans. In addition, it contains the /invoke subdirectory where various sub-procedures used by the launch procedures are stored.
The general start command to enter at the UNIX prompt is:
<install_location>/altair/scripts/<script name>
where <script name> is the script name associated with the particular application and the optional
[file name] applies to the applications that require an input file when they start.
For example, to start HyperMesh you would enter the following at the prompt:
<install_location>/altair/scripts/hm

The HyperWorks help system is a browser-based HTML help system. It can be installed with
applications or installed alone on a server. This section describes how to set up and access
HyperWorks help system.
Help systems for AcuSolve, SimLab, solidThinking Inspire and Evolve, and Virtual Wind Tunnel are
always installed on the local machine with applications.
2.5a
The HyperWorks help system can be installed with applications or installed alone on a server. In order
for the help to work properly from applications, you must set up a valid Internet browser and a valid
path to the HyperWorks help installation if help is not installed with the application. Help can be
installed via different ways:
In order for HyperWorks help to work properly, you must set up a valid browser on the machine from
which the application is launched. For Windows and Mac, HyperWorks uses the default Windows (or
Mac) browser. For Unix and Linux, the valid browser is set during the installation time. You can verify
the browser setting stored in the hwhelp.cfg file. The hwhelp.cfg file is located in the
<installation directory>/altair/ directory on Linux/Mac, and the top-level installation directory
on Windows.
If Help is pre-installed on a shared network location, the information will be stored in the hwhelp.cfg
file as well. A typical hwhelp.cfg file should contain the following information:
HW_MSG_BROWSER /usr/bin/firefox
HW_MSG_HELP <install_dir>/altair/help
If HW_MSG_HELP is not set in the hwhelp.cfg file, HyperWorks application will connect to the Altair web
site help automatically.
The help server on UNIX platforms does not support tilde (~) completion of paths.
Please make sure that you use the full path for the items HW_MSG_HELP and
HW_MSG_BROWSER if you set them as environment variables or in hwhelp.cfg. (for
example, use /path/to/help_user/my_help instead of ~help_user/my_help).
38
2.5b
The steps to start help from application Help menu are similar for most applications.
1.
Set up the browser and help environment before starting the application as described above.
2.
3.
Click the Help drop-down list and choose the help for the selected application.
Once the online help has been launched, you can use the Index, Contents, or Search to locate the
help for a specific topic. The context sensitive help works as well.
2.5c
Each HyperWorks Help book can be invoked via command prompt by pointing to the
altair/scripts/help script.
2.5d
If you have chosen Server setup type described in Section 2.1, each client is installed through
NETSETUP as described in Section 2.2. HyperWorks applications will be available from the Start
menu. If both the HyperWorks application and help are installed on the software server, help can be
accessed on this client as long as a valid browser is installed on the client machine.
