Dear string players,
You will find here the entire part Beethoven's Symphony 8. Violins and violas will
also find one or two excerpts coming from Glazunov’s Concert Waltz No. 1. We will
perform both pieces in the spring, Once you look at all the pages, you will notice that
the audition excerpts are numbered and clearly marked. These are the excerpts that
you need to learn for your audition.
| included the whole part of the symphony so that you will have a better
understanding about the entire composition. Most of the excerpts are difficult, and
by preparing yourself during the winter break we will ensure that you will not get
overwhelmed with academics having little time to practice
‘Once you learn the audition excerpts, you are asked to film yourself (you can
use your phone, iPad, etc.) and send me the video. This can be done ina
number of ways
- The best way is probably to upload the videos to your Google Drive at
Miami and share it with me.
- Alternatively you can upload it into YouTube, but don't forget to make it
“unlisted” or “public” and send the link to me.
Make sure that the video isin a readable format!
The deadline to submit your video is Monday, January 17, 2016, therefore you
have a little over one month to do it. Our first rehearsal will be on Monday,
January 25 - first day of classes - at 2:30PM in Presser Hall room 7.
Here are a few tips for you as you prepare for your audition:
+ Be sure to tisten to the excerpts in context. In other words, listen to a recording
of the piece on YouTube or iTunes so that you have an idea about the tempo,
style, mooe. «sd eynamics. Frequently students pay attention only to pitches. It
is crucial that vot gerform with the correct rhythm, dynamics, phrasing,
articulation. nd everything else that brings the character to the music you are
playing. There are many excellent recordings on YouTube. Here is one example:
Beethoven:

(By the way, the concertmaster of this orchestra was my student and played in
the university orchestra I conducted before coming to Miami)
Glazunov:

satch?v=CIC2-NZzTuk+ As you look at each excerpt, try to discern which techniques are being tested.
Good intonation and rhythm are very important, but so is the ability to play with
a good tone, shape the musical phrase and give the music direction.
+ Ifyou have divisi, play the upper one. If you are not sure if a passage should be
played divisi or multiple stops, play divisi.
+ Ibis better to play slowly but correctly than to play fast and in a disorganized
way, stopping and loosing the pulse. If you are able to play slowly and correctly,
we will speed it up gradually.
Tam loos forward to working with you Have a wonderful 2016!
