An electrodynamometer movement that has a full scale deflection current rating of 10mA is to be used in a voltmeter
circuit. Calculate the value of the multiplier for a 10V range if Rm=50.
An electrodynamometer movement that has a full scale deflection current rating of 10mA is to be used as a 1A
ammeter. If the resistance of the moving coil is 40 , what is the value of the shunt?
A series of type Ohmmeter designed to operate with a 6V battery has a circuit diagram as shown in Figure 2. The
meter movement has an internal resistance of 2000 and requires a current of 100 A for a full scale deflection. The
value of R1 is 49k .

Assuming the battery voltage has fallen to 5.9V, calculate the value of R2 required to zero the meter.
Under the conditions mentioned in part (a), an unknown resistor is connected to the meter causing a 60
percent meter deflection. Calculate the value of the unknown resistance.
A PMMC instrument has a three resistor Ayrton shunt connected across it to make an ammeter (multirange
ammeter). The resistance values are R1=0.05 , R2=0.45 , and R3=4.5 . The meter has an internal resistance of
Rm=1k and Ifs=50 A. Calculate the three ranges of the ammeter.
A voltmeter having a sensitivity of 1k /V is connected across an unknown resistance in series with a milliammter
reading 80V on a 150V scale. When the milliammeter reads 10mA, calculate the
a. Apparent resistance of the unknown resistance (neglecting the resistance of the milliammeter)
b. Actual resistance of the unknown resistance
c. Error due to the loading error of the voltmeter
Draw a schematic, including values for Ayrton shunt for a meter movement having a full scale deflection of 1mA and
an internal resistance of 500 to cover the current ranges of 10mA, 50mA, 100mA and 500mA.
The circuit diagram of Figure 3 shows a full wave rectifier ac voltmeter. The meter movement has an internal
resistance of 250 and required 1mA for a full scale deflection. The diodes each have a forward resistance of 50
and infinite reverse resistance. Calculate,
a. The per volt rating of the ac voltmeter.
b. The series resistance required for full scale meter deflection when 25Vrms is applied to the meter terminals.

A 1mA full scale deflection current meter movement is to be used as an Ohmmeter circuit. The meter movement has
an internal resistance of 500 and a 5V battery will be used in the circuit. Mark off the meter face (dial) for reading
resistance with a 20%, 50% and 100% deflection.
Identify the advantages of using rectifier type instrument compared to electrodynamometer and thermocouple type
instrument.
