To date some community members still encounter some difficulties in accepting people with

disabilities. Disabled children are seen as in in various situations, such as sad, tragic, and passive
and bitterness, twisted and aggressive or brave. As a result, they are perceived as people in need
of help, protection ,care, pity, charity, sympathy, special services, special schools and charitable
donations. Therefore it is against this background that the groupworker have a fundamental role
in the community to provide services for children with disabilities. This essay is going to explore
these roles of a groupworker as the essay proceed.
WHO defines disability as an umbrella term ,covering impairments, activity limitation and
participation restrictions. Impairment is a problem in the body function or structure, an activity
limitation is a difficlulty encouraged by an individual in e3xceeduing a task or action while in
participation restriction is a problem experienced by an individual in involvement in life
situations. Therefore disability is a complex phenomenon ,reflecting an interaction between
features of a person body and features of the society in which one lives.
The purpose of the roles of a groupworker is to promote measures for prevention of disabilities,
to rehabilitate, to help disabled people realize their goals or their full participation in social life,
and also to advocate for development and equality amonst the disabled children in the
community. Their first role is to raise awareness of issues of disability in the community. There
are number of issues which has to be met or known abt children with disabilities in a community.
And in this case it is by no means that if a group failed to raise these issues, children with
disabilities will have no help they can get. Due to negative connotations about disabilities in
various communities and societies, groupworkers must be in front of highlighting the plight of
children with disabilities. In other words a grouper has to advocate for some polices to be
adjusted concerning children with disabilities. A groupworker as an advocacy can even lobby for
the government to pass legislation specifically targeting chidren with disabilities. By so doing
this will enhance children with disabilities to better have greater opportunities to realize their
potentials and avoid segregations.
Aprt from the point above, gruopworkers can be a psychiatric in a hospital within a certain
community. In this case he or she will be working with a group of children with mentally
challenged problems and also with their families by providing counseling sevises. In this case as
a counselor in the community, a group worker will help children with disabilities to persistently

take or comply with their medication. They also help these children and their families prepare for
returning to their homes after discharged. According to Zastrow (2000), discharge planning is
especially important in some rehabilitative settings, such as hospitals. In some cases children
with disabilities may fail to go to their homes due to various problems or considerations. So in
this case a groupworker have to arrange the placement of the child, like for instance to a nursing
home or a group home. So a groupworker will also have to pay some visits to these children they
have placed in various homes to make sure if they are complying with their medication or to see
if they are adhering to the medication regime after they have been discharged so as to avoid
relapsing. So in this case considering these issues , a groupworker has a pivotal role in the
community in relation to children with disabilities.
Moreover, a groupworker has a role in the community to act as a broker or a mediator. In this
essence, it has been noted that, disabled children in the community face various problems or
challenges than those who are not disabled. These challenges or problems includes, financial
costraints, need of wheel chairs, transportation and many other examples. Hence as a result,
children with disabilities for themselve cannot be able to manage access these things, and hence
became a barrier to their success and also to improve their wellbeing in the community. It is of
great importance of a groupworker to stand in between the se chidren with disabilities and
various helping organisartions. As a broker or a mediator a groupworker will play a fundamental
role to link children with disabilities with other charity organisations like Care. Department of
Social Welfare services also have a fundermentasl role to provide public assistance to children
with disabilities. These organisations have poverty alleviation programmes for children with
disabilities. By linking them with these organisations a particular group of children being dealt
with will be able to fully realize their potential or their capacities. As a result a groupworker has
a great role to play in the community regarding children with disabilities.
Furthermore, a groupworker in the community has a role of giving information about devastative
things thriving in the society that can harm or have an impact on children with disabilities. For
example the issue of HIV and AIDS. With the devastasting effects of HIV and AIDS in todays
world it is wise for a groupworker to provide information about the pandemic to children with
disabilities. In this case a groupworker may probably encourage a certain group of children he or
she is working with to get tested and know their status so that further steps can be done. Like for

instance ,if a gruopworker have manged to encourage his or her goup to be tested and found that
there are children who are infected by HIV and AIDS, he will be able to seek help from various
charity organisations to help the children with financial assistance so that tese children will be
able to sustain their lives and restore their wellbeing. So in tis essence it is of great importance to
have a groupworker in the community working with disabled children so that he or she can
inform them abiut various things hovering during that time that might have negative effects on
children with disabilities.
Groupworkers role include preventintive, curative and rehabilitative services for disabled
children in the community. Disability care includes improving capacity for caregivers and
parents to care for their disabled children and facilitating integration of disabled children into
mainstream schools and other socieal settings. A groupeworker have to pay visits to various
homes of the children of whom he or she is working with to see if the child is being taken care
of. Because in some cases there is a lot of abuses happening towards children with disabilities,
some will be given hard work and athers are emotionally abused, raped and many other
examples. So in this case paying visits, for a groupworker would be of great importance so that
the groupworker will knew how his or children are living. If possible when probably found that
the children faces a lot of challenges or abuses he or she may take various procedures to help that
child with disabilities. So in this caes we are saying, a groupworker has a fundamental role to
play in the community when working with children with disability.
Disabled children are seen as sad, tragic, and passive or bitter, twisted and aggressive or brave,
courage and inspirational accordind to Oliver (1990). Henceforth, they are seen or perceived as
people in need of great help, protection, care, pity, charity, sympathy, special sevices, special
schools and charitable donations. Through what is known as the mirror effect, mant disabled
children in the community have become to believe that they are unable just like the attitude
portrayed by the people around them. A lot of desrimination is happening towards children with
disabilities, hence it is the duty of a groupworker to restore the identity of these children through
giving them psychosocial support like counseling as being discussed earlier. In various ares like
in schools, hospitals and even in the families, disabled children faces a lot of discrimination for
they are seen as outcasts and as a result they will go under a certain level of a miserable life,
always sad and so forth. Thats when a group worker will jump in to provide helping services so

that these children will not feel out of place or give up in life but rather continue with their lives
as normal as others. Burton (1996) notes that people with disabilities have been treated as
outcasts for over 100 years and whatever attention is drawn to them, it is only with sympathy and
pity. So according to Burtons view point, a group worker has a pivotal role to help children with
disabilities in the community from these challenges so that they can be accepted as others in the
community.
Furthermore, in addition to point above, disability has been presented as a culturally embedded
socially accepted form of oppression against people with disabilities. To date some communities
still encounter difficulties of accepting people with disabilities. It is against this backgroumd that
a group worker have a vital role to provide services to children with disabilities. According to
Harris and Enfidd (2003) impairment in many societies is traditionally interpreted according to
religious beliefs. This impairment is regarded as a punishment from God for a sin committed by
oneself or ones family. As a result having a disabled child is a source of shame, often for the
whole family. Hence, disabled are seen as a tragic of suffering people to be pitted and cared for ,
it is only the group worker who can better understand this situation and be able to help children
with disabilities in the community. With this evidence a group worker can be credited to be of
great importance within each and every society for enabling human functioning and enabling the
wellbeing of people with disabilities especially children.
Moreso, a group worker has a pivotal role in the society or community to provide vocational
guidance and training skills, literacy and numeracy training skills. For instance, technical skills
in metal work, leather work, carpentry, seewing, knitting, agriculture, general repair skills, and
all other sorts of training so that children with disabilities will have something they are good at
or that can sustain their lives in future.
