Three seat designs

The standard polymer seat (SO2) is
bi-directional with an extended pressure
responsive sealing lip.
The patented
fire-tested, bi-directional metallic seats
(FO2) provide a metal-to-metal pressure
responsive seal. Properly fitted with
metallic seats and high temperature seals,
DynaCentric valves have demonstrated
they are capable of providing fire-test
performance in accordance with API 607.
This unique design provides fire-test
capabilities regardless of flow direction.
Valves constructed of 316 stainless
steel and assembled with the proper trims
and Ni-Cr Alloy (UNS No. 6625) seats
(M03) are capable of handling temperatures to 1000F. MO1 seats are suitable
for temperatures to 750F.

SO2

FO2

Drop tight sealing to 1480 psi.

SO2 and FO2 seat designs provide drop
tight sealing: SO2 to 720 psi, FO2 to
1480 psi.
Disc design reduces seat wear
Precision machined from carbon steel or
alloy steels, the rugged valve disc is
designed for gradual engagement into
seat to prevent pinching or cutting.
Eccentric positioning of stem allows disc
to swing free of seat in open position,
reducing operating torque and wear.
Special surface coatings such as stellite
overlay are available for critical or severe
service conditions.

Seat retainer has many advantages

Lug body seat retainers are designed to
minimize deflection and provide fullpressure, end-of-line sealing capability.
Seat retainer capscrews for both wafer
and lug body designs are outboard of the
lading to prevent corrosion and positioned
so they do not interfere with flange gasket seals, including API 601 standard spiral wound gaskets. An additional body
joint gasket on metal seated valves
between seat retainer and body assures
zero leakage. Absolute containment of the
lading is assured under the most adverse
conditions of shock, vibration or line
stress.
Deep stuffing box for extended life
Deep stuffing box design includes
stainless steel fasteners as standard and
is available with TFE chevron or hightemperature compression packing for
long life and positive stem seal. Live
loaded packing assemblies and double
stuffing box with purge/monitor port
available upon special request for
critical applications.

flange patterns.
Multiple pressure ratings
Three drop tight pressure ratings are
offered for 2" to 12" sizes. Normally, 200
psi shutoff is used in butterfly applications.
However, 285 psi shutoff is optionally
available for higher pressure applications.
For smaller actuator sizing, 50 psi valves
offer reduced torque. 50 psi and 150 psi
drop tight pressure ratings are offered on
14" to 48" sizes. For minimum torque
where drop tight closure is not required,
throttling valves are available.

DEMCO

A L V E S

Dry stem journal eliminates

potential for leakage
The Demco disc is uniquely designed
with a continuous annular raised land
around the stem hole and disc edge which
presses into the seat flat at every angular
position. The resilient seat presses back
with a higher specific force than the line
pressure, preventing leakage to the stem.
In addition, two O-ring ribs are provided
in the seat stem bore creating a triple
stem seal.
In competitive stem seal designs
with boot seats, a seal is accomplished
by an interference squeezing on the
stem or an O-ring in the stem journal.
The potential for leakage behind the
seat is high. As the disc wipes the seat,
elongation of the stem seal area allows
leakage to collect behind the seat. This
condition is eliminated by Demcos dry
stem journal and hard-backed seat.

Hard-backed cartridge seat (2"- 36")

The Demco cartridge seat is constructed
by permanently bonding a resilient elastomer to a rigid backing ring. In addition
to superior sealing integrity, this design:
1) makes valve installation easier because
no special precautions are required for
disc position. This is especially advantageous when installing valves with fail
closed actuators; 2) eliminates high
torque and premature failure caused by
elastomer distortion as found in other
non-rigid seat designs; 3) simplifies seat

SPECIFICATIONS

replacement because it is slip fitted into

the body, with no need for special tools.
Positively oriented disc
Proper orientation of the stem/disc
connection is assured by the rectangular
drive. In 2" - 24" size valves, the disc is
permitted to float on the stem to perfectly
center in the valve seat. This design
enhances drop tight sealing and prolongs
service life.
End-of-line service
Lug body valves may be used in end-ofline service, with downstream piping
removed. (Only weld neck or socket
flanges can be used for this service.)
Since upstream pressure is excluded
between the flange and the seat face by
the exclusive Demco flange seal, there is
no effective force to slide the seat downstream. Demco 2" - 12" Lug Butterfly
Valves are suitable for liquid service up
to 200 psi with downstream piping
removed (150 psi 14" - 36").
Lug body valves are recommended
for isolation of pumps, control devices
or other system components which may
need to be removed for repair or replacement. Lug valves are also suitable for
installation at points from which piping
expansion may proceed. Such valves
are normally blanked with blind flanges,
to protect the exposed seats, until new
piping is attached.

See page 21 for technical specifications.

system gives absolute assurance of sanitary butterfly valve construction.

Drilled passageways, a design originated by Demco, vent the entire interior
of the disc to atmosphere. No closed
chamber is provided for the culture of
undesirable organisms.
Discs are produced from investment
castings, smooth and non-porous. Stem
bosses are minimized for increased flow.
The projecting inner surface of the
resilient seat contacts and is compressed
by the mating flange to form a smooth
and uninterrupted flow way. This positive
seal between the innermost contact of the
seat and flange ensure aseptic conditions
after a piping flush.

Sanitary Features
B

Series NEI-T Teflon Valves

Because of the inert, aseptic non-stick
character of Teflon, Demcos NEI-T
Teflon-lined butterfly valve is ideal for
clean lines in food and beverage plants.
The Teflon seat consists of a virgin
Teflon liner overlaying and bonded to an
elastomer cushion (either Buna-N or EPT
are available) which provides resilience
for sealing. The Teflon liner extends over
the seat faces, completely covering and
sealing the resilient material from contact
with line fluids.
Exclusive design features of this
valve confine wetted parts to the disc and
seat. The stems and body are permanently
sealed from line fluids. The flow way
formed with adjacent piping is free of
traps to assure aseptic conditions when
the lines are flushed. The series NEI-T
also features the same vented disc and
stem design as the NE-I Sanitary valve.

Special Service Valves

Oxygen Service
DynaCentric valves provide the positive shut-off and tight
sealing necessary for gaseous oxygen service. Due to the risk of
explosion and fire inherent in such service, positive grounding
for the disc and stem with the Belleville disc springs is standard. Positive safeguards have been established in order to conform to the requirement that valves for oxygen service must be
completely free of oil, grease, combustible material, slag, metal
shavings, paint, rust or various fibers. All parts are cleaned in
solvent and carefully inspected under black light for contamination. After assembly and testing with Nitrogen, each valve is
individually tagged and sealed in a polyethylene bag. Valves for
such service may be supplied in any materials, but 316 stainless
steel or Ni-Cu Alloy (UNS No. 5500) are recommended.

High Temperature
DynaCentric valves for high temperature service are equipped
with a 316 stainless steel seat (M01), 316 stainless steel stem
bearings and high temperature seals. This seat/seal combination
is rated up to 750F in carbon steel bodies. Ni-Cr Alloy (UNS
No. 6625) seats (M03) and stainless steel bodies can be utilized
up to 1000F. Leakage rates for metal seated valves are within
the service limits of ANSI/FCI 70-2 Class IV. DynaCentric
valves furnished with this seat perform well in steam, hot oil
and heat transfer fluids.
Vacuum Service
The drop-tight sealing capabilities of DynaCentric valves
make them an excellent selection for vacuum service. S01,
S02, and F02 seat-seal codes are suitable for vacuum service
to 20 microns absolute. Inverted packing or purged stuffing
box configuration is available on request.

Steam Service
DynaCentric valves are ideally suited for applications in service
steam. Reinforced TFE seats (S02) with high temperature packing will handle steam to 100 psig saturation pressure. When fitted with 316 stainless steel seats with reinforced TFE inserts
(F02), the DynaCentric valve is suitable for steam to 125 psig
saturation pressures. The combination of rotary operation,
streamlined flow and positive shut-off can result in years of
maintenance-free service without the seizures on cool-down,
flashing or stem leakage associated with conventional gate or
globe valves.

Sour Oil and Gas Service

DynaCentric valves with sour gas trims are available for H2S
service in accordance with NACE MR-0l-75, latest issue.
Low Temperature Service
DynaCentric valves for temperatures to 50F are available
in both 316 stainless steel construction and low temperature
carbon steel.

Ratings shown above are maximum working pressure ratings for

the valve body at various temperatures. All pressures are PSIG.
Practical pressure limitations according to actual service conditions
are determined by the seat ratings shown on page 11.
These valve body ratings are based on the following material
specifications: CS-ASTM A516 Grade 70 and A216 Grade WCC
(NOTE: Carbon steel listed is not recommended for prolonged
usage above 800F.) 316 SS-ASTM A351 Grade CF8M.

Valves with 17-4 PH stems are only recommended up to a

maximum temperature of 650F. Ni-Cr Alloy (UNS No. 7718)
stems are required for temperatures above 650.
NOTE: Cold working pressures for the DynaCentric valves
equipped with 316 SS stems will be derated. See table above.
Ni-Cr Alloy (UNS No. 7718) or Ni-Cu Alloy (UNS No. 5500)
stems can be furnished for applications requiring high corrosion
resistance and full ANSI ratings.

Valve Sizing Formulas

Proper valve selection is dependent on several factors for both
liquid and gas flow, as well as the physical limitations of the
valve as established by the manufacturer. The following information is presented for handy and quick reference.
The flow coefficient (C V) is the most universally accepted
measure of a valves capacity to handle flow. A dimensionless

for assistance in sizing.

Cavitation
DynaCentric valves, because of their inherently high flow
capacities, have a greater tendency to cavitate at high pressure
drops. Cavitation occurs in liquids if the static pressure of the
flowing liquid decreases to a value less than the fluid under
pressure. This phenomenon can create accelerated wear and
deterioration of valves and piping as well as annoying noise and
vibration problems. To avoid cavitation in piping, the following
formula should be employed:

arrangement is often employed with DynaCentric valves where

the desired C V for the control valve results in a valve size that is
smaller than the line size.

coefficients for the DynaCentric valve when installed in combination with reducers.

entity, C V is defined as the number of gallons per minute of

water at standard conditions (60F and 14.7 psia) which will
flow through a given flow restriction with a pressure drop of
1 psi. Once determined, the C V of a valve provides a capacity
index by which one is able to readily estimate the required size
of a flow restriction for controlling the fluid flow of any system.

Flow Characteristics (CV)

The practical control range of this type of valve occurs where
continuous throttling can be effected without significant loss of
accuracy or decrease in valve life.
The usable rangeability for DynaCentric valves is between
20 and 70 opening, resulting in a ratio of 10:1. In sizing the
DynaCentric valve for throttling applications, a full open C V
should be selected that is approximately 1.8 times the C V determined from calculations. Under normal flow conditions, this
selection will provide a valve opening of 50-60.
C V values equal the flow of water in U.S. gallons per minute
per 1 PSI pressure drop.

W-K-M DynaCentric Valves Manual Actuators

Worm Gear Actuators
Worm gear actuators are available as optional equipment, for
DynaCentric valves sizes 3" through 8". All larger size valves
require worm gear actuators or power actuation.

Handle operated valves, sizes 3" through 8", can be converted

in the field to worm gear operation. No modification is required to
accommodate the addition of the worm gear unit.

DR S

E R I E S

I S T O N

Consult the factory for complete data sheets showing mounting configurations. Flatted stems are standard on 2"-12" Butterfly Valves
(NE-C, NE-I, NE-D), whereas 14"-48" NF-C utilize a keyed stem.
Series DR Actuators are available as Double-Acting or Spring
Return. Double-Acting is the most economical, requiring either air
or hydraulic pressure for opening and closing (fail last position).
Spring-Return Actuators use compression
Remove indicator
spring(s) to move valve in one direction,
for access to manual
override wrench flats
while air pressure moves it in the
opposite direction. Spring Return
Actuators are used when valves
must move to a predetermined
position upon air supply failure
(fail open or fail closed).

Demco Series DR Piston Actuators consist of two opposed pistons with integral gear racks which are coupled to a common central drive shaft to produce rotary motion.
In the basic unit, the Body, Pistons and End Caps are aluminum; the Central Drive Shaft is hard anodized, high performance Aluminum Alloy 70-75. The Fasteners are plated steel; the
Seals are Buna-N. All units are totally enclosed and use gaskets
for weatherproof operation. Carbon filled teflon guide bands support the pistons to eliminate metal-to-metal contact during actuator operation. As a result, piston o-rings designed for sealing are
not required to perform bearing functions.
Mounting the actuator to the valve for many popular sizes is
direct, requiring only a splined, aluminum stem adapter. Other sizes
may require the addition of an aluminum adapter plate, but still
make a closed coupled unit. Some sizes (mostly the larger valves)
will require the traditional steel brackets/coupling mounting kit.

Position Indicator Switches*

Position
Indicator
Position Indicator Switches are available to
Switch
provide an electrical contact closure at open
and closed positions, normally used for OnOff service. Independently adjustable SPDT
switch elements are arranged so that each end
of the valve travel is indicated by separate circuit closures.
E

weatherproof or NEMA 7 explosion-proof enclosures are available. Solenoid valves are available as 3-way valves for spring
return actuators or 4-way for double acting actuators. Four-way
solenoids are equipped with a push button manual override.
Exhaust metering valves are available to control opening and
closing speed of the butterfly valve.

Gear Overrides are available for
size 40 through 4004 DR actuators. Especially applicable to
spring return actuators, the handwheel can be engaged with a
special declutch lever to hold the valve in its last position until
the actuator is returned to automatic operation.

Positioners*
Pneumatic positioners are offered for modulating
service. The standard signal range is 3-15 psi, and
may be generated by temperature,

Solenoid Valves*
Solenoid Valves are used to direct
supply air to the actuator to open and close the butterfly valve
at the command of an on/off electrical signal. Direct attachment
to the actuator through a manifold eliminates all external piping.
Pressure connections are 1/4 NPT. Standard voltage is 120
VAC; other voltages are available on special order. NEMA 4

Spring Diaphragm Actuators*

Spring Diaphragm Actuators have the characteristics of springreturn cylinders but are applicable to lower air supply pressures.
The larger area of the diaphragm as compared to a cylinder provides greater force from the same supply pressure. Demco Series
R diaphragm actuators for butterfly valves with drilled stems utilize a heavy-duty rack-and-pinion linkage to operate the valve.

Diaphragms are made with steel case and diaphragm plates,

Nylon-reinforced Buna-N diaphragm,
303 SS stem and Buna-N seals.
Rack-and-pinion components are
ductile
iron or
steel.

3-way Adapter for Valves

Orientation

3-way adapter assemblies mechanically link two butterfly valves,

to close one while opening the other, with a single actuator.
Valves are commonly connected in this manner by assembling to
a flanged tee for diverting service.
3-way adapters for valves may be used with piston, cylinder,
diaphragm, or electric actuators, gear operators or manual handles.

Pressure Rating
Three drop tight pressure ratings are offered for Demco
Butterfly Valves. Normally, 200 psi shutoff is used in butterfly
applications. However, 285 psi shutoff is optionally available
for higher pressure applications. For smaller actuator sizing, 50
psi valves offer reduced torque.
For minimum torque, throttling valves, which do not provide drop tight closure, are available.
Wafer valve connection

Vacuum Rating
Demco Butterfly Valves will seal against 10 microns of vacuum
(29.9 inches of mercury). For reduced torque and extended seat
life, 50 psi discs are recommended for the dry service conditions found in many vacuum applications.

Marking
Each valve is positively identified by marking and tagging
per MSS SP 25.

End-of-Line Service
Lug body valves may be used in end-of-line service, with
downstream piping removed. (Weld neck or socket flanges,
only, can be used for this service.) Since upstream pressure is
excluded between the flange and the seat face by the exclusive
Demco flange seal, there is no effective force to slide the seat
downstream. Demco Lug Butterfly Valves are recommended
for liquid service up to 200 psi with downstream piping
removed.
Lug body valves are recommended for isolation of pumps,
control devices or other system components which may need
to be removed for repair or replacement. Lug valves are also
suitable for installation at points from which piping expansions
may proceed. Such valves are normally blanked with blind
flanges, to protect the exposed seats, until new piping is
attached.

Actuation
Positive latch handles, worm gear operators and automatic
actuators are available and totally interchangeable on the
Demco valve.
The Demco top flange is dimensionally compatible with other
competitive butterfly valves. With optional utility top stem, the
Demco valve interchanges directly with competitive valves, allowing valve replacement without the need for new actuation.
Installation and Maintenance
Demco Butterfly Valves are bi-directional, with identical flowway from either face. To install, simply close the valve, insert
between flanges and make up with studs or cap screws. No regular maintenance or lubrication is ever required. Disassembly is
simple, for inspection or replacement of parts. Open the valve,
remove handle or actuator, remove tangential pins, pull out the
stems and push the disc and seat out of the body. Reassemble in
reverse order, with a small amount of general purpose non-hydrocarbon based lubricant on the outside of stems, seat and disc flats.
Steel or cast iron flanges of either raised or flat-faced type
are suitable for use with Demco Butterfly Valves. Plastic
flanges are subject to damage at installation by over-tightening
the bolting and may deflect or cup, resulting in flange leaks.
Refer proposed plastic flange installations to Demco Valve
Quotations Department for review and recommendation.
Throttling discs, with no seat interference, do not
provide a stem seal. Stem o-rings are provided for this
application. Flange gaskets assist the o-rings in 2"-12"
valves, and must be used with throttling discs, only.

N F O R M A T I O N

This nomograph gives corresponding values for the parameters of

flow rate, valve size, disc angle and
pressure drop of Demco Butterfly
Valves in 1.0 specific gravity water
service at 68F.
The shaded portion of the nomograph represents line velocities
below 15 feet per second and is
normally used for valve sizing in
liquid applications.
Butterfly Valves are economical
throttling devices. Reliable throttling
can be attained at disc openings
from 25 to 70.
Sample Computation for Water
Water, with specific gravity of 1.0
and flow rate of 1200 gpm, through
6" Butterfly Valve. Required:
Pressure drop at full and 75 disc
opening.
Project horizontally from 1200
gpm to 6" valve curve. Project
vertically upward to full open valve
curve, then horizontally to read
0.35 psi pressure drop. Continue
upward projection to intersect 75
opening curve, then horizontally to
read 0.8 psi pressure drop.
Sample Computation for Air
Air, with density of 0.217 lbs./cu. ft.,
flow rate of 40,000 cu. ft./hr., through
5" Butterfly Valve. Required: Pressure drop through full open valve.
Disregarding change in gas condition by pressure drop across valve,
proceed from 40,000 cu. ft./hr., as in
liquid computation, to read 15 psi
pressure drop. Convert pressure
drop from water to air by multiplying
this value times the ratio of air-towater densities:
15 psi x 0.217 = 0.052 psi
62.4

To determine pressure drop for

any fluid, multiply value obtained
from the nomograph by the quotient
of the fluid density, in pounds per
cubic foot, divided by 62.4.

Pressure (max) = Interrupted velocity (fps) 58 psi/fps

Pressure drop is computed by rearranging the formula to:

In other words, pressure increases 58 psi for each foot per

second of interrupted pipe line velocity.
A pipe carrying fluid at 15 feet per second velocity will
have an instantaneous pressure increase of 870 psi under rapid
closure conditions.
The effects of water hammer are seen in a butterfly valve as
bent disc and stems, broken bodies or both.
Water hammer can be minimized or eliminated by slowing
valve closure time in accordance with the following formula:

Q2 x D
CV2 x 62.4

Sample Computations
What is the flow rate of water at ambient temperature through
a 4" butterfly valve 70 open when pressure drop across the
valve is 0.5 psi? (Density of water at 68F is 62.4 pounds per
cubic foot.)

Water Hammer
Water hammer is a series of shocks in a piping system caused
by rapidly stopping the flow of fluid in that system. Although it
is difficult to measure pressure spikes caused by water hammer
shock with ordinary equipment, maximum obtainable pressures
caused by instantaneous valve closure can be approximated by
the following formula:

P x 62.4
D

Q = CV x

open, flowing 2000 gallons per minute of solvent with a density
of 55 pounds per cubic foot?

Generally, a closing time of 6 to 8 seconds is sufficient to

eliminate water hammer.

output must meet or exceed the maximum torque requirement

of the valve.
Normal Wet Opening Torque requirements due to interference are tabulated below. Dry service will increase opening
torque significantly. Consult factory for dry service torque
requirements.
The disc of a butterfly valve, in partially opened condition,
is subject to lift forces from passage of fluid over its surfaces.
This effect is analogous to an airplane wing and results in an
unbalanced turning force on the disc. Dynamic torque is proportional to pressure drop through the valve and may become
significant in some applications.
Dynamic torque typically is a maximum at about 70 disc
opening. Under high differential pressure conditions, such
torque may exceed the design strength of stems, connections or
actuators. The curves at right may be used to calculate dynamic
torque for Demco Butterfly Valves and should be consulted in
any case where high differential pressure may occur during
operation of a valve.

Liquid flow is accelerated as it passes through a valve in such

a manner that pressure is decreased below the vapor pressure
and bubbles form. Immediately downstream of the valve,
velocity decreases while pressure increases and the bubbles
collapse causing noise and possible mechanical damage to the
valve and piping. This is called cavitation. Cavitation can
often be identified by the noise of the collapsing bubbles
which sounds like gravel flowing in the pipe.
Generally butterfly valves operate with high flow capacities and at low pressure differentials and are not particularly
susceptible to cavitation.
When butterfly valves are used as control valves, one can
assure that cavitation will not occur by applying the following
simplified formula:
Pmax = KC ( P 1 P V )

Where:
Pmax = Differential pressure across the valve.
KC

DEMCO

= Cavitation constant
(approximately .35 for butterfly
valves).

P1

= Inlet pressure (PSIA).

PV

= Vapor pressure of the flowing liquid

(PSIA).

Example:
What is the maximum pressure drop possible through a butterfly valve at 100 PSIG inlet pressure with water at 68F (.339
PSIA vapor pressure)?
Pmax = .35 (114.7 .339)
= 40.03 psi

Under the above conditions it is possible to take a 40.03 psi

pressure drop across the valve before cavitation will begin.

Torque
The torque (turning effort) required to operate a given butterfly valve is determined by two factors: friction of disc and seat
due to interference, and dynamic forces of flow through the
valve which tend to open or close the valve. Actuator torque

the failure of Seller to exercise any of its rights
hereunder shall not be construed as a waiver
or relinquishment of any such term, condition,
or right hereunder and shall not affect Sellers
right to insist upon strict performance and
compliance with regard to any unexecuted
portions of this contract or future performance of these terms and conditions.
All orders must be accepted by an
authorized employee of Seller. The rights
and duties of the parties and construction
and effect of all provisions hereof shall be
