Nauseaandvomitingoccurinupto80%ofnormalpregnancies.Hyperemesisgravidarum,resultingin
dehydrationandketonuria,isamoresevere,disablingandpotentiallylifethreateningconditionaffectingup
to1.5%ofpregnancies.Treatmentissupportivewithintravenousrehydration,antiemeticsandcorrectionof
vitamindeficiencytominimizecomplications.Therearegoodsafetydatatosupporttheuseof
antihistamines,phenothiazinesandmetoclopromideinhyperemesisgravidarum,thoughtrialsofefficacy
arelackingandthereislittleevidenceonwhichtochosetheoptimumtherapy.Thisreviewdiscussesthe
diagnosisandmanagementofhyperemesisgravidarumandtheprevention,recognitionandtreatmentof
theseriouscomplicationsofWernickeencephalopathy,osmoticdemyelinationsyndromeand
thromboembolism.
