QUESTIONNAIRE ANALYSIS
What went well
In my questionnaire what I found went well was:

All questions were directly related to my ideas

I got a wide range of response from different nationalities and ages

It was easily understood by the respondent

Good mix of qualitative and quantitative data questions

Speaking in terms of aesthetic, I consider it to be quite attractive and clearly set.

It was fairly anonymous which provided more truthful responses

I shared it on my social media page which assisted because of the large amount of
replies I received

What could have gone better

What I would change if was to do it again:

I would use less qualitative data due to people skipping questions

It would have been more interesting if I asked the respondent to specify their profession

More options in the closed questions

I would have taken less answers from my peer group as they werent too serious with it

More audience based questions, i.e. how would you describe yourself in 3 words or
less?

It would have been helpful if I had asked more questions

RESULT ANALYSIS
Gender, age group and nationality

Suhana Lakhani Saturday, October 15, 2016

As expected the response from females was higher than that of males. Reflecting on this data, this is
probably because more females were interested in this particular questionnaire due to most of the
questionnaire being dedicated to the genre of romance.
Studying the data from the pie chart dedicated to investigating response based on age group, I can make
an assumption that most of my target audience lie within the ages of 10-20. Perhaps this is due to the
working class being too preoccupied with business or work to lounge or watch a movie.
This data overall gives me the impression of what sort of audience I should be looking to target and this
will assist with how I structure my film opening. Turning it to appeal more to a younger audience, this
would require me to be more up to date with the trends in my opening and have clean humor as well as
an inviting title that would grab the attention of the mentioned group.
I have received an extremely wide range of response in terms of national identity.
The reason behind asking this question was simply to understand how many people have seen a
Bollywood movie, because my inspiration is largely taken from this style of film making.
I haven't received much of a response from the region in which I would presume Bollywood movies are
viewed mainly but received a tremendous amount of replies from England, UAE and Kenya. This gives
me the presumption that Bollywood isn't very largely noticed in these areas. An opening that is
Bollywood based would turn out quite unique and possibly attract more attention as it is different from
what has been seen in the past.

Type of Romance Enjoyed

Noted from the pie chart. A majority of people love to reminisce in Disney movies, I had previously
predicted this response as the age group in which I got responses from are still quite young.
Very little people enjoy reading romantic novels. This is maybe due to the time consuming act it is to sit
down and read through a book.
Romance has proved to be a genre that isn't too favoured as most of the percentage have chosen to do
none.
This information has informed me to try base my opening over a popular fairytale. The audience
pleasures of Disney movies would include, predictability, a happy ending, relatable characters,
childhood reminiscing, music and unforgettable dialogue.

Male or Female lead?

A great deal of people enjoy a female lead. This was a complete surprise to me as I had expected many
to fall back on the ever popular male lead. I suspect this is due to the recent increase in strong feminist
figures in media. Nowadays Hollywood has taken a spin, creating strong, memorable and quirky female
leads that have stolen the show- and apparently one too many hearts.
In truth my original idea was to be centered on a male, after looking at my data, I have had a change of
heart, basing my plot on a female character.
My regret in this particular question was I had not added an option for people to pick both. My results
might have been significantly different if I had in fact added this as an option.

Favorite Romantic Movie

This was an open question, allowing respondents to choose their own movie that they have preferred
and enjoyed over the course of years.
I categorised the answers into five different areas, as this would be easier to understand and investigate.
Tragic love stories, are the most popular between respondents. These were classed as stories that didn't
have a happily ever after and were left with unrequited love or even the death of a major character.
Personally I wasn't expecting this kind of response as I tend to favor happy endings.
Disney is again a popular scene with this group of people.
I am not planning a tragic love, despite its memorable toll on people and the film industry. Something
fairytale like is running in my thoughts. Maybe a remake of an old story that has been slightly forgotten.

Character Traits

In this question I hoped to understand what kind of characters people fall in love with and largely base
my protagonist over this particular question.
Its rightly said that to make someone fall in love, you have to make them laugh. This is reflected highly
in this question, shown that people take interest in a character that is bubbly, quirky and can make then
laugh.
The second largest vote is for intelligence. I have expected this reply as I, myself love intellectual
characters.
This question was both open and closed, allowing the audience to add their own replies. To my surprise,
not one respondent mentioned anything about the physical features of the characters.
Based on this reply, my character should be intelligent, humorous, mysterious and bold. As well as stray
away from jealous, stubborn and selfish characters as hardly anyone has voted for this sort of trait. It's a
pretty tough requirement to fill but I will enjoy the challenge of writing a mixed character as such. These
characteristics remind me of those princes from Disney movies and books.

What moments do you love?

In two minutes it's quite hard to fully pick a scene which will grab attention and keep people on the edge
of their seats. This response allows me to see what people really love witnessing during romantic
movies.
This was also an open question that allowed people to elaborate their favorite scenes from movies and
books. I have also categorized this data as it is easier to understand. This question was skipped by a lot
of people, perhaps this is due to the thinking process behind this question and no one was prepared to
think as far back.
Individuals enjoy watching characters fall in love with each other. The audience pleasures that show in
this particular part of a movie would be escapism, predictability, its relatable, release of chemicals like
oxytocin that help to relax, lack of a romantic relationship in personal life would create a sense of
fulfilment.
Another people favorite was sad moments. The audience pleasures in this would be unpredictability,
schadenfreude, and maybe even a realistic view of not everything ends happy.
I hadnt previously planned to incorporate a gloomy moment but after analyzing these results, I can see
how much people enjoy these emotional scenes and will try to work it into my opening or plot.

What do you enjoy about Romantic movies?

I asked this question because I wanted to understand what encourages people to watch romantic
movies, and what invokes emotions within people.
The response relies largely on a fan base, people watch romance movies because they enjoy their
favorite actors or they rely on the actors to pull through the movies. In truth, I am also a victim of
movies with famous actors or my personal favorite.
People also love dialogue that is written in movies, perhaps it is because it's something they are afraid to
say, despite what they feel. It could also be something they want to hear. Emotions are taken from
memorable dialogues which are trended and eventually carry the movie.
I'll never let go from Titanic
I wrote to you every day from the notebook
Do you trust me? from Aladdin
People always do crazy things, when they're in love from Hercules
All these are memorable dialogues that promote the love for the movie
Other important aspects include music, character and plot. Music enhances what the scene is trying to
portray, and characters is what creates the movie.

Favorite Male and Female Characters

Suhana Lakhani Saturday, October 15, 2016

Relating back to the question of character trait, it is reflected as what people have put as their favorite
character.
Princess Anna and Rose are bubbly and fun characters, despite their sad histories and family problems
they reflect strength and shine of happiness that light up a scene. Their life revolves around the want for
someone to love and someone to love them back just as much.
Mulan and Elizabeth Bennett take on a whole different approach as they stay away from the status quo.
They both show bold morals and rebellion for a good cause. Their stories are centered with problems
and love seeps into their life without knowledge. I expected this reply as people have shown their love
for feminist movies in recent years as they have risen tremendously. Taking over a scene as soon as they
enter.
This was the most skipped question, which is why the range of response is so niche.
I contemplate I have received a wider range of response in the question of male leads than that
compared to the female character because of the female respondents were significantly higher than
that of the males. Most women would have a favorite male character whether it's in childhood or later.
The male characters that are chosen as favorites in this questionnaire can be pulled into 3 categories.
Firstly, a prince:
Someone who is bold and brave. Fighting for always for the good and always wins his princess in the
end. A prince in a movie usually symbolises a happy ending.
Next, a serious, intellectual character:
These are normally those that aren't looking for falling in love, they usually oppose the idea of romance
and love, and are normally closed up, anti-social and career orientated. These would fall under character
traits such as mysterious, intelligent and stubborn.
Lastly, a good humored commoner:
These types of characters are usually appreciated for their humor and good energy. They arent oriented
around love but dont oppose to it either.
In personal opinion these are the kinds of characters i find myself loving the most. They would spew
energy and enthusiasm. Generally speaking, they light up scenes and are widely known to be
adventurous and have quirky one liners.
Each of these 3 categories have similar amounts of votes, leaving me to choose and play around with
different character types that are all loved and cherished.

If I was to do this question over, I would change a few things. Starting with the wording of the question:
instead of favorite character, I would have put most memorable this encourages people to think
widely and write down not only what they like. But characters that have made an impact on their minds
and left a unique imprint. I would also make it a both open and closed question, giving a few options
before asking for their own answer, as this question was the most skipped between people.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, from this questionnaire, I have understood who my target
audience is; females from the ages 10-20 years. I have also got plenty of ideas
for characters and inspiration from already portrayed characters. This
questionnaire has helped me to understand what type of content people like
to see and hear.
In my film opening I will try to incorporate all the data that I have found from
this questionnaire yet still maintain my originality.
