Process Engineering Design Project 2016

DP3 Instructions

Final Submission
This is the final design package submission of your design project (HAZOP and presentation
still to come though). The final design package consists of three volumes:
Volume 1: Project Extended Executive Summary
Volume 2: Engineering Design Summary
Volume 3: Calculation Appendices
Volume 1 is a team effort. Volumes 2 and 3 contain the individual work done by each member
of the team. The following outlines the content of these Volumes. You will need to ensure that
reports are collated and presented in a consistent, clear and professional manner.
Since this is the culmination of your work in this project, it will strongly influence how we
view your work during the semester when we sit down to review marks (e.g. your mass balance
should be in better shape than DP1 and DP2). Revisit the Style Guide for all Reports to ensure
you have not missed any obvious presentation points.
All reports are to be submitted as one hard copy to Victors office and one PDF copy to
Victor by email and uploaded to Blackboard.

HARD COPY
All three volumes are to be placed in two A4 lever arch (or ring) folders as this is easy for you
and the markers to deal with. Do NOT bind your submission as markers need to take stuff out.
Volumes 1 and 2 will be placed in one folder and Volume 3 in a second. A3 sheets need to be
folded in the correct manner with the title block showing. Put your team letter on the spine of
the folder (e.g. Team A). Strict page limits apply.
The hard AND soft copy must be submitted on the due date. Compiling your hard copy
will take a lot of time. Please leave yourself enough time to do it properly (I suggest a day).
You can cost yourself a lot of marks for no good reason if this is done sloppily and stuff
is omitted or put in the wrong order.

SOFT (PDF) COPY

Markers will generally use the hard copy but they may refer to the soft copy if something has
printed poorly. Soft copies will be used during the marking mediation process so it is important
that they are submitted and are the same as your hard copy. Your soft copy must be submitted
to Victor by email and uploaded to the Blackboard site:
1.

Transmittal letter and Volume 1 (DP3_GroupX_ Volume1).

2.

Volume 2, including PFDs, PCDs, P&IDs, and equipment drawings as a single file in the
same order as your hard copy (DP3_GroupX_ Volume2).

3.

Volume 3 with Contents Page at the start (DP3_GroupX_ Volume3).

If anything is unclear, please see Victor well before the due date.

Letter of Transmittal. The letter must be signed by all (signing not required for soft copy).
Overall Contents Page. This will list the volumes and tabbed sections in folder 1 and the
corresponding author of that tabbed section. It must list the tabbed sections containing PFDs,
PCDs and the Hazard Study as well.

Volume 1
Title Page
Executive Summary
Matrix of contribution to Volume 1 and Section 1 of Volume 2 (if it is team based), with the
hard copy signed by everyone.
Table of Contents
1

INTRODUCTION A description of your design task, including the information given,

bounds and specifications of products. Also include a description of which section(s) each
person completed for Volume 2.

PROCESS FLOWSHEET DEVELOPMENT This will include a description of the

major aspects of the process (e.g. chemistry etc), your screening of alternative processing
schemes and the selection procedure for the flowsheet. What are the big things that shaped
your process?

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT This includes resources used, emissions and hazards. It

must be specific to your process, not generic safety hazards that are present on any
processing facility (e.g. noise, trip hazards etc). What are the major hazards? What are the
emissions that leave your plant, your plants total equivalent CO2 emissions, water
consumption etc? Where are these things used and generated on your plant?

OVERALL ECONOMIC ANALYSIS

REFERENCES

BLOCK FLOW DIAGRAM (BFD) Single A3 sized BFD as a summary of the major
features of your process.

OVERALL PLANT LAYOUT This needs to be at the major unit operation level of
detail. It does not require minor units like pumps etc.

50 page limit for Sections 1 to 6

Volume 2
TEAM (optional). 20 page limit. This will cover any or all of the sections below with any
decisions or criteria that were made as a team or used by multiple people. 20 pages of well
targeted stuff here could save you 80 pages as a group! If it helps the readability of your report,
it can only help your presentation and teamwork marks.
INDIVIDUAL. 50 page limit for Sections 1 to 6. Each persons whole section will be
tabbed. Your section number and your name must appear in the header or footer.
Title Page. Stating the tabbed section number, author and to which PFDs and P&IDs the
tabbed section refers (remember all of the groups PFDs and P&IDs go in their own section).
Executive Summary
Table of Contents
1

INTRODUCTION This will include a description of where your section fits into the
process, the design basis of the section, the feedstock, products, specifications and
performance issues for your section(s).

PROCESS FLOWSHEET
2.1

Description and justification Description of the principle unit operations with

justification of the specific processing route taken.

2.2

Mass and Energy Balances Assumptions and critical information used for the M&E
balances.

UTILITY REQUIREMENTS A summary of the utility usage in your section, so that the
reader can quickly see where all the water, power etc has gone.

ENVIRONMENTAL EMISSIONS What emissions (continuous or intermittent) come

from your section? What will need to be implemented, in terms of procedures,
measurements and/or containment, to meet environmental regulations/obligations?

ENGINEERING DESIGN This section is for all your designs.

5.1

Process Design Reason(s) for equipment selection, basis for design and design
summary. Highlight the two pieces of equipment that were designed in detail.

5.2

Process and Instrumentation diagram Outline how you arrived at the control
structure in your PCD(s) with emphasis on any difficult decisions or ones integrated

with other sections. Outline any justification for additional valving and instruments
not in the PCD.
5.3

Detailed Design Justification of detailed design features not covered by the previous
two sections for your two pieces of equipment.

CAPITAL COSTING The capital cost for your section with analysis of the costs are and
discussion of any areas where you have explicitly traded off operating and capital costs to
make a design decision.

SECTION LAYOUT & DETAILED DESIGN SKETCHES Pages do not need to be

numbered or have header and footer like the rest of the volume. However, they need
distinct drawing numbers.

After the individual sections above, more TEAM sections are required with each section
tabbed separately.
TEAM PFDs. On A3 single sided pages, folded correctly and in correct order.
TEAM PCDs. On A3 single sided pages, folded correctly and in correct order.
TEAM P&IDs. On A3 single sided pages, folded correctly and in correct order.

*************** Second Folder ***************

Overall Contents Page. This will list the tabbed sections in folder 2 and the corresponding
author.

Volume 3
TEAM and INDIVIDUAL. 70 page limit per tabbed section.
Title Page. Stating the section number, author of that section in Volume 2 (s) and to which
PFDs and P&IDs the section refers.
Table of Contents. This table of contents does not have to be like the other sections. It can
simply list the contained calculations/information. How you order your appendices is up to
you. The over-riding consideration is ease of finding information. If a markers want to find the
calculation that corresponds to (say) R-201, they (not you) should be able to find it in a few
seconds. If it is a team section, state the % contributions of each team member to each
appendix.
Calculation Sheets and Procedures. These are all your calculations. If you are using a
template prepared by someone else, make sure they are clearly credited at the start of the
calculation and in the footer or title block. Your calculation sheets do not have to have page
numbers that are continuous through the whole section. You should be able to put them in order
according to the numbering system you have used. This in conjunction with the TOC for your
tabbed section should enable markers to find your calculations quickly.
The presentation of Volume 3 will affect your presentation marks. Clarity and ease of finding
stuff is the key!
