Melbourne in 1847
as a criminal and celebrity. Mick examined
the gun, very coolly put it under his arm,
and crossed the road to the pub. Charet
attempted to retrieve the gun in a polite
manner, and was rebuffed by Mick with a
coarse brutality of the lower order of
Micks countrymen.18 Mr. Charet sought a
warrant from the police, stating that from
what he knew of the prisoners character,
as well as by general report, he had no
doubt that he would commit some act of
violence if he encountered him in the
public streets.19 Herein lies evidence of
both the reputation of Mick and his esteem
with the people of Melbourne: he was
found not guilty by a jury despite a great
deal of evidence to the contrary.20
