Laboratory Report No. 1

Introduction to QGIS in Creating Map
1. Introduction
With the use of map, we can easily familiarize to the places around us
and we can easily locate the places that we are looking for. So, it is important
to use a more detailed map to help and guide us in exploring our amazing
world.
With a QGIS application (formerly Quantum GIS), we can open digital
maps on our computer, create new spatial information to add to a map,
create printed maps customized to our needs, perform spatial analysis, edit,
visualize, analyze and publish geospatial information without cost.
Understanding how to visualize map data is an important skill but it can be
intimidating. Often one needs to create a map that can be printed or
published.
QGIS has a powerful tool called Print Composer that allows us to take
our GIS layers and package them to create maps. A common function of GIS
Applications is to display map layers. Map layers are stored as files on a disk
or as records in a database. Normally each map layer will represent
something in the real world - a roads layer for example will have data about
the street network. Another common feature of GIS Applications is the map
legend. The map legend provides a list of layers that have been loaded in
the GIS Application. Unlike a paper map legend, the map legend or layers
list in the GIS Application provides a way to re-order, hide, show and group
layers.
In this Laboratory Activity, we will make a Municipal Map of Isabela and
should know more about Introduction to Quantum GIS, Quantum GIS
Symbology and Labeling, and Quantum GIS Layer Properties.
2. Objectives
At the end of the laboratory activity, the student aims to know more
about Introduction to Quantum GIS, Quantum GIS Symbology and Labeling,
Quantum GIS Layer Properties and to create a Municipal Map of Isabela.
3. Methodology
To be able to know how to create a Municipal Map of Isabela, the
student followed the video tutorials 1. Introduction to Quantum GIS, 2.
Quantum GIS Symbology and Labeling and 3. Quantum GIS Layer
Properties.

4. Results and Discussion

Figure 1. Municipal Map of Isabela

The Figure 1. shows the Municipal Map of Isabela. It has a total of
31 municipalities. Each area of municipality was assigned with different
colors with labels. The roads are traced with black and the rivers was
traced with blue.
5. Conclusion
The student knows more about Introduction to Quantum GIS, Quantum
GIS Symbology and Labeling, Quantum GIS Layer Properties and to create a
Municipal Map of Isabela. Using this map, we can now easily explore all the
municipalities of Isabela and travel to the places that we want access.
