Cisco TelePresence System TX1310 65 Room

Recommendations
Revised: February 17, 2014, OL-26384-01

The Cisco TelePresence System TX1310 65 (TX1310 65) is designed to be used in a multipurpose room
(for example, a conference room). However, to ensure that you have the best conferencing experience,
Cisco recommends that you optimize your room by using the guidelines and recommendations in this
chapter.
This chapter includes the following sections:

General Room Requirements and Recommendations, page 1-1.

Supported Table Types and Minimum Room Dimensions, page 1-2

Recommended Table Height, page 1-10

Recommended Table Finishes, page 1-10

Room Color Recommendations, page 1-11

Lighting Recommendations, page 1-11

Acoustic Recommendations, page 1-12

Power Requirements, page 1-12

HVAC Considerations, page 1-13

General Room Requirements and Recommendations

The following are required elements for a TX1310 65 room:

You must use an enclosed space.

You must have a room with the minimum dimensions that are specified in the Supported Table
Types and Minimum Room Dimensions section on page 1-2.

The room must meet minimum heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) requirements that
are provided in the HVAC Considerations section on page 1-13.

The room must be supplied with electrical power as specified in the Power Requirements section
on page 1-12.

The power and Ethernet outlets must not be positioned directly behind the TX1310 65 unit.

Chapter 1

Cisco TelePresence System TX1310 65 Room Recommendations

Supported Table Types and Minimum Room Dimensions

If you install two TX1310 65 systems in rooms that share a wall, you must not mount the systems
on the same wall; mount the two TX1310 65 systems on separate walls.

The walls in the room must meet the structural guidelines as specified in the Important Warnings
and Cautions section on page 2-1 in Chapter 2, Assembling and Mounting a Cisco TelePresence
System TX1310 65.

The following recommendations or guidelines ensures that you have the best possible conferencing
experience:

A white room is acceptable but not recommended for the best experience. Neutral colors work best
for the floors and walls.
You can use color, dcor, and signage in the room to communicate your brand and corporate identity.
Cisco recommends that you do not use colors with high contrast.
For more color information, see the Room Color Recommendations section on page 1-11.

Normal office lighting is usually sufficient for a good conferencing experience. However, Cisco
recommends that you perform the following actions for the best experience:
Use indirect florescent lighting and avoid any direct lighting.
If your room has windows, install shades to reduce glare, especially for any windows that are

directly behind the participants.

For more information about lighting, see the Lighting Recommendations section on page 1-11.

The TX1310 65 was designed to well in an office with normal sound levels. Large rooms, or rooms
with high ceilings, can cause echo and reverberation issues. For more information about acoustics,
see the Acoustic Recommendations section on page 1-12.

Supported Table Types and Minimum Room Dimensions

The minimum required room size is 18 x 13 feet (5.5 meters x 4 meters). The table configurations shown
in Figure 1-1 and Figure 1-3 require a minimum room size of 23 x 13 feet (7 meters x 4 meters).
Figure 1-1 through Figure 1-8 show the types of tables that the TX1310 65 supports and the minimum
room size for each type of table. To see the recommended table finishes, see the Recommended Table
Finishes section on page 1-10.
All rooms must have a minimum room height of 8 feet (2.44 meters).
Cisco recommends that you use a table where at least four people sit in a straight line facing the camera.
Figure 1-1 through Figure 1-7 illustrate tables that provide the best conferencing experience.
Some of these figures show the microphone placement for more than three microphones. These
additional microphones are used for audio conferences only. For information about configuring these
additional microphones, see the Configuring Additional Microphones for Audio-Only Conferences
section on page 3-39.

Recommended Table Finishes

Cisco recommends that the table in your TX1310 65 room have the following characteristics:

The table tops should have a low-gloss finish (non-reflective surface)

If you use wood a table, the wood should be a neutral, light color

If you use a laminate or plastic table, the table top should be a neutral, light color (for example,
off-white or light gray)

Cisco does not recommend using the following types of table tops:

A table that uses a very dark or heavily saturated color (for example, wood that is reddish in color,
or uses a dark wood stain)

A table with a glass top

Reference Guide.

Lighting Recommendations
The cameras that are used in the TX1310 65 are designed to work well using normal office lighting.
However, Cisco recommends that you use well dispersed, ambient light throughout the room.
The ideal lighting environment is to use indirect fluorescent lighting that uses bulbs with a rating of
4,100 Kelvins (4100k). You can supply the lighting either through recessed fixtures or pendant fixtures.
Pendant lighting is best if your room is more than 9 feet (2.7 meters) high. Cisco does not recommend
direct lighting.
For best results, one set of lighting should be in front of conference participants, and one set should be
behind the participants.
The lighting in the room should be well controlled. You should block natural sunlight or other light that
could enter through glass or thin blinds.
Cisco strongly recommends that your fluorescent lighting use electronic ballasts.
It is important to consider the direction of the lighting in your room. For conferencing purposes, lighting
can come from three directions:

Key LightThis is the primary source of lighting and typically the strongest source of lighting. Key
light is built-in to the TX1310 65 light reflector.

Fill lightThis light is created primarily from the overhead lights in the room, and secondarily from
the TX1310 65 light reflector. Fill light can reduce or eliminate shadowing on the conference
participants that is created by the key light.

Back lightThis optional light is projected behind the conference participants. Back light is
generally indirect and creates separation between the participants and the room background.

Acoustic Recommendations
The TX1310 65 microphones and speakers are designed to be used in rooms that have typical office noise
levels.
Rooms with excessive noise (greater than 55 decibels (dBA) might not provide the best conference
experience.
Large rooms, high ceilings, or rooms that have a large amount of glass may experience reverberation. If
possible, reduce reverberation to a level that is below 700 milliseconds across the voice spectrum
(between 300 and 3000 Hertz).

Power Requirements
The Cisco TelePresence System TX1310 65 requires one 20amp circuit @100V 120V (US electrical
code requires maximum 16amp on a 20amp circuit) or one 10amp circuit @ 240V. Two receptacles must
be provided for these circuits. The receptacles should be located on the wall near the intended location
of the endpoint but not directly behind the endpoint.

Note

Peripherals such as document cameras or alternate displays will require additional circuits and
receptacles. Placement will depend on the type and location of the peripheral device.

HVAC Considerations
Planning the cooling for a TX1310 65 TelePresence room is important to insure the room remains
comfortable for participants and the equipment is kept safe. As outlined in the overview section of this
document, HVAC considerations should be given from the initial phase of choosing a room. The detail
in the table below outlines the specific BTU output of a TX1310 65 when deployed as recommend and
under typical operating conditions. Typical assumes normal usage conditions such that the system is not
subject to 100 percent utilization rates and deployment following Cisco recommendations. i.e. room
located on interior, proper air circulation, walls painted with neutral colors, temperature expected 72-76
degrees F. Within these guidelines and typical usage, diversity of 25 percent can be equated which lowers
cooling requirements and increases overall efficiency. HVAC considerations should be given from the
initial phase of choosing a room. Installing new cooling (or heating) systems can be time-consuming.

Note

Conditions not consistent with these recommendations or typical usage may require additional cooling.
Consult with an HVAC engineer to define building envelope and unique requirements. Additional
equipment such as data displays, document cameras, etc. will require additional cooling.

Attaching the Mounting Bracket to a Wall With Wooden Studs

This section contains the procedure you use to mount the MSP-CSC6 mounting bracket to the wall using
wooden studs.

Caution

Make sure that the sheet rock (drywall) on the wall is no more than 5/8 inches thick.
To attach the mounting bracket to the wall, perform the following steps:

Step 1

Tip
Step 2

Using a stud finder or other method, locate the studs in the wall.

A stud finder that has a center-of-stud locator is useful for this procedure.
Mark the location of the two studs to use for the mounting bracket.
These studs can be 16, 20, or 24 inches (40.6, 51 or 61 centimeters) apart.

Step 3

(Optional) If your stud finder has a center-of-stud locator, find the center of the stud.

Step 4

Confirm the center of the stud by drilling pilot holes into the wall with the 1/8-inch or 3mm drill bit to
locate the left and right edge of the studs.
After you locate the edges, you can determine the center of the stud.

Step 5

Using the mounting bracket as a template and Figure 2-9 as a reference, measure and drill six holes as
follows:
a.

Note

Drill four 7/32-inch holes in the wall that go into the center of the stud: two holes on the top rail and
two holes on the bottom rail.

Arrange the bracket so that the row of holes are on top as shown in Figure 2-9. If you mount the
bracket upside down, the mounted parts of the TX1310 65 will be too high on the wall. If the
bracket has arrows, arrange the bracket so that the arrows on the vertical cross-pieces point
upwards.
If required, move the vertical cross-pieces for the bracket inward to accommodate the stud location.

b.

Drill two 1/2-inch holes into the sheet rock that go into the slot at each end of the top rail. These
holes are not required to go into the stud.

Attaching the Mounting Bracket to a Wall With Steel Studs

This section contains the procedure you use to mount the MSP-CSC6 mounting bracket to the wall using
steel studs.
Before starting this procedure, be sure to read the guidelines for walls with steel studs in the Important
Warnings and Cautions section on page 2-1.
To attach the mounting bracket to the wall, perform the following steps:
Step 1

Tip

Using a stud finder or other method, locate the studs in the wall.

A stud finder that has a center-of-stud locator is useful for this procedure.

Chapter 2

Assembling and Mounting a Cisco TelePresence System TX1310 65

Attaching the Mounting Bracket to a Wall With Steel Studs

Step 2

Mark the location of the two studs to use for the mounting bracket.
These studs can be 16, 20, or 24 inches (40.6, 51 or 61 centimeters) apart.

Step 3

(Optional) If your stud finder has a center-of-stud locator, find the center of the stud.

Step 4

Confirm the center of the stud by drilling pilot holes into the wall with the 1/8-inch or 3mm drill bit to
locate the left and right edge of the studs.
After you locate the edges, you can determine the center of the stud.

Step 5

Using the mounting bracket as a template and Figure 2-16 as a reference, measure and drill six 1/2-inch
holes as follows:

Tip

Cisco recommends that, prior to drilling these holes, you either use a 1/2-inch drill bit with a pilot tip,
or use a 1/8-inch drill bit to drill pilot holes to ensure that the holes are horizontally aligned and level.
a.

Note

Drill four holes that go into the center of the stud: two holes for the top rail and two holes on the
bottom rail.

Arrange the bracket so that the row of holes are on top as shown in Figure 2-16. If you mount
the bracket upside down, the mounted parts of the TX1310 65 will be too high on the wall. If the
bracket has arrows, arrange the bracket so that the arrows on the vertical cross-pieces point
upwards.
If required, move the vertical cross-pieces for the bracket inward to accommodate the stud location.

b.

Note

Drill two holes into the sheet rock that go into the slot at each end of the top rail. These holes are
not required to go into the stud.

Use a level on the bracket when you measure the holes. Leveling the holes ensures that the bracket is
horizontally level when it is mounted.

Each of these light sources, and the amount of light in terms of lumens or watts, produces a different
color temperature. This color temperature is sometimes expressed using terms such as cool, warm, or
daylight, but can be expressed more precisely in kelvins (K) as a numeric value.
Cisco recommends that you use lighting with a color temperature of 4000 to 4100 K.

Tip

In many cases, the color temperature is printed on the light bulb.

If you are unable to determine the type and color temperature of light bulbs in the meeting room,
experiment with color temperature settings until the color and images on the display screen look lifelike.
Each time you change the setting and click Apply, the color temperature in the display changes. You
cannot see these changes until you set up the cameras. See Setting Up the Cameras section on page 3-8

Testing the Camera Switching

Note

This feature requires a minimum Cisco TelePresence administration software version of 6.0.2.
Although there are three cameras, there is only one outgoing audio and video stream. When a participant
in the room begins speaking (the active participant), the system should switch the camera to the active
participant.
To test that camera switching is working correctly, perform the following tasks:

The system is placed in loopback mode and you see a mirror image of the video stream.

Step 4

Tip

Move between the segments and make sure that the cameras switch to the active participant.

Speak directly at the display, the same as you normally would during a conference.

Arranging the Seat Alignment Guides

Conference participants should be seated in an area that is completely within the field of view of one of
the three cameras. To ensure this requirement, Cisco provides you with Seat Alignment Guides. After
you set up the cameras, you place these guides on the table; these guides show the field of view for each
camera.
To place the seat alignment guides on the table, complete the following steps:
Step 1

Using a supported Internet browser, log in to the Cisco TelePresence System administration GUI.

Step 2

Select the correct table type by completing the following steps:

Step 3

Navigate to Troubleshooting > Hardware Setup > Cameras.

Step 4

Click Start to display the image of the cameras in the displays.

Step 5

Note the field of view for each camera.

Step 6

Using non-marking tape (for example, masking tape), tape a mark on the table that denotes the edge of
the field of view for each camera.
Place this mark approximately 18 inches (46 cm) from the edge of the table, and point the line of tape at
the camera.

Tip

If you cannot determine the camera range, use this guide for marking the table: The focal range of the
center segment is approximately 5 feet (152 cm) wide from where the participants sit. The focal range
of each side segment is approximately 4 feet 6 inches (137 cm) wide.
Mark the table in four places:

Note

Edge of camera view, left camera

Edge of view between left and center camera

Edge of view between center and right camera

Edge of camera view, right camera

If your table is narrow, omit the two markings on the outer edges.

If you have configured a Digital Media Player (DMP) for use with your system, you can use the DMP
audio as the audio input source, instead of a shared presentation, when you are not in a TelePresence call.

Note

Configure this feature only if you are using a VGA-to-VGA cable for shared presentations. This feature
is invalid if you use an HDMI-to-HDMI, HDMI-to-DisplayPort, or HDMI-to-Mini DisplayPort cable,
because the DMP and the presentation cable use the same physical connection on the codec for audio.
Figure 2-50 shows you the connections. For more information, refer to the Connecting the Audio Cable
to the Codec section of the Administration Guide for Cisco TelePresence TX Software Release 6.0.
Connect the DMP to the codec and display as follows:

When Secondary Audio Input Source is set to DMP, audio input is active only when the following
conditions are met:

Note

The Cisco TelePresence system is not in a call

The time period is during normal business hour

You define normal business hours with the Display on Time and Display on Duration fields in Cisco
Unified Communications Manager. For more information about configuring normal business hours for
your Cisco TelePresence system, refer to the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Configuration
Guide for the Cisco TelePresence System.
When Secondary Audio Input Source is set to PC, the audio input is active while the presentation source
is active, both in and out of a call.

Step 5

To end DMP audio configuration, click Stop.
