Gaudeamus igitur Academic Hymn

Gaudeamus igitur,
iuvenes dum sumus;
Post iucundam iuventutem,
post molestam senectutem
nos habebit humus.
Vivat academia,
vivant professores,
vivat membrum quodlibet,
vivant membra quaelibet,
semper sint in flore!

Veselju ivimo,
dok smo tako mladi;
jer kad divna mladost proe,
pa nam kruta starost doe
shrvat e nas jadi.
Stog' nek ive kole sve,
profesori s njima...
Bog poivi i nas ake,
prisutne sve veseljake,
koliko nas ima!

Bologna Process
The Bologna process primarily refers to restructuring of
higher education systems in Europe, focusing on promotion of
student and staff mobility to create the European Higher Education
Area by 2010. The Bologna process is named after the Bologna
Declaration, a document, which was signed in Bologna by higher
education ministers from 29 European countries on June 19, 1999.
Croatia signed the Bologna Declaration in May 2001, in Prague. By
signing the Bologna Declaration on national level, Croatia accepted
provisions of Magnae Chartae Universitatum, which was adopted in
1988 by confederation of European Union Rectors' Conferences. By
becoming involved in the Bologna Process, Croatia committed itself
to reform its higher education system to adapt it to achievements of
the Declaration objectives.
The main goals of the Bologna Declaration are:

Promotion of the European dimension in higher education

Adoption of the system of easily recognizable and
comparable academic and professional qualifications and
diploma supplements for efficient employability and
international competitiveness

Adoption of three cycles of study: undergraduate, graduate

and postgraduate. The first undergraduate cycle shall be
precondition for qualification at the European labor market.
The second graduate cycle shall provide master
qualifications, and the third postgraduate cycle refers to
obtaining of PhD titles

Implementation of credit system ECTS. Credits shall be

accumulated apart from higher education, within lifelong
learning

Promotion of mobility and overcoming of obstacles to free

fluctuations of students, teachers and scientists

Promotion of European cooperation in higher education

quality assurance

Academic Year 2013/2014
ECTS system
ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) is a credit system,
which provides a way of measuring and comparing learning
achievements, and transferring them from one institution to
another. As an effective instrument for creating curricular
transparency and facilitating academic recognition the ECTS system
supports European-wide mobility.
Student workload in ECTS consists of the time required to
successfully complete all planned learning activities within one
course. Credits are allocated to all educational components of a
study program (such as lectures, placements, seminars, mentor
work, individual work, examination, etc.) and reflect the quantity of
work that each component requires to achieve its specific objectives
or learning outcomes in relation to the total quantity of work
necessary to successfully complete a full year of study. ECTS reflect
student workload, so it can be said that the system is fully oriented
towards students.
Credits in ECTS can only be obtained after successful
completion of the work required and appropriate assessment of the
learning outcomes achieved. Awarding ECTS shall be considering the
following:

Credits refer to student workload

164

Student workload refers to overall time needed for successful

completion of enrolled courses, meaning also the time
consumed for individual studying, data analysis after
practical work, examination and other forms of learning
Credits are awarded to all courses that student enrolls at
either obligatory or elective, to projects, final theses, field
works, industry placements, and other activities that are
corresponding to specific study program requirements
Sum of all credits awarded to courses enrolled by a student
per semester shall be 30, counting to 60 per one academic
year.

PROFESSIONAL STUDY PROGRAM - MANAGEMENT
Objectives of professional study program in Management:

Understanding of basic market oriented concept of company

management
Mastering of activities that enable good performance and
management of all business processes in national and foreign
market
Acquisition of basic knowledge also for other analytical and
managerial businesses in entrepreneurial, governmental and
logistical companies

The leading thought of the professional study program in

Management is the education of economists (bachelors) for different
expert activities within companies under conditions of openness of
Croatian market towards organization, marketing, accounting and
trade. Professional study consists of six semesters. Within first two
semesters, students acquire basic knowledge in economics, and
during the third and fourth semester they acquire broader general
and practical knowledge in the same field. The fifth semester offers
the possibility to students to choose courses according to their
personal interests, and also organized professional training. During
the sixth semester students proceed with their professional training
supervised by a mentor and prepare their final thesis.
This professional study, according to its structure and
organization, is comparable to other programs offered in the
European Union. It is also comparable to professional studies in
Republic of Croatia (Zagreb, Split, Poega) and partially with some
studies in the same field at European institutions (e.g. WirtschaftsAkademie in Frankfurt (4 semesters), Universitt Mnster
(Germany),
Berufsakademie
Mannheim
(6
semesters),
Berufsakademie Karlsruhe (6 semesters)
There are suitable classrooms equipped for this professional
study program realization. After completion of the study program, a
student is awarded an academic title:
PROFESSIONAL BACHELOR OF ECONOMICS

Technical Department
PROFESSIONAL STUDY PROGRAM - PRODUCTION
ENGINEERING
Mechanical Engineering is oriented towards creation of new
values, being therefore an important factor in development of
community. Achievements in technology are nowadays mostly
resulting from scientific research work and developments, so there
is an obvious need for well-educated professionals in engineering.
Professionals in mechanical engineering shall possess knowledge in
different technical sciences and also have some basic knowledge in
social sciences.
Within their study in Production Engineering, students gain
knowledge and skills that enable them to work independently within
all technological processes in all areas of production, such as design
of products, production preparation, processing, control, equipment
maintenance and environment protection. Students are educated to
design simple constructions and tools, to use CAD software, to
select materials and technology for production and to provide
logistic support to production.
Graduates from this study program can work in the following
fields:
Operative preparation for production
Technological preparation for production
Organization and supervision of contemporary production
processes
Organization and methods of maintenance for equipment,
tools and power plans
logistic support to production and other processes
quality control and laboratory testing
purchase of materials
presentation of products and company
entrepreneurship related to different areas of mechanical
engineering
sales and purchase of machines, devices and parts for their
maintenance
Future job position of our graduates is primarily focused on
issues in production technology. Mechanical engineers can work in

164

Guidebook for Students of the College of Slavonski Brod

Academic Year 2013/2014
metallurgy, shipbuilding, civil engineering and car industry, as well
as in tool production, construction offices, testing stations, service
provisions, etc. There is also an option for our graduates to start
their own business.
Our graduates can continue education at other institutions
that offer graduate professional study or graduate university study
in mechanical engineering.
Technical Department of the College carries out study
program analysis and adjusts it to requirements of the economy
sector and contemporary achievements in technology. Students are
offered many elective courses in different areas of mechanical
engineering.
Teachers affiliated with the Technical Department have rich
work experience in economy sector, which is a significant
prerequisite for quality teaching.
The study program is organized in six semesters and
provides to students theoretical and practical knowledge. Upon
passing all exams and defending final thesis, students are awarded
an academic title:
PROFESSIONAL BACHELOR
MECHANICAL ENGINEER

Student Identification Card
Computerization of the system of subsidized meals for
students of all Croatian higher education institutions has been
encouraged and supported by the former Ministry of Science and
Technology (today Ministry of Science, Education of Sports).
Students get their magnetic cards with their photos on.
With this Identification Card for Students (Croatian
abbreviation IKS), students can claim their student rights. On the
card there are the following data printed: student home higher
education institution, name of the umbrella institution (university or
college), student card identification number, student name and
surname, student photograph and scanned signature. On the
backside of the card, there is a magnetic stripe with card number,
student identification number and student name and surname. The
card
enables
immediate
identification of the card owner by
magnetic scanner. Student card
can be used only by its owner.
Violation of the rules is considered
as misuse.
Student card is valid until
student is enrolled at home
institution,
and
validity
is
automatically prolonged for the
next semester or year if student is
enrolled. If student is not enrolled
in the next study year, card
validity ceases and student cannot
claim their right to subsidized
meals.
Student administration at
any HE institution is in charge for updated data about their students
and rights. Any complaints concerning student rights about usage of
student card shall be solved primarily by a home student
administration (Student Office).

Erasmus University Charter
At the end of 2010, the College of Slavonski Brod received
the Extended Erasmus University Charter, awarded by the EC
Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency. The Charter is
a sort of a license to the College to organize student and staff
mobility to 27 EU member states, as well as to host students and
staff from abroad. Erasmus exchanges offer students study visit or
realization of practical training abroad in duration of three to twelve
months. Mobility of staff can be realized within activities of teaching
or professional trainings abroad in duration of up to six weeks.
The College of Slavonski Brod disposes of administrative and
organizational capacities for realization of international mobility and
exchange programs. All College study programs are organized in
line with the Bologna Declaration principles. ECTS is implemented to
all courses. Each College department has appointed contact person
that is responsible for providing information about possibilities for
student and staff mobilities. Within its administrative procedures,
the College guarantees full recognition of mobility periods and
gained ECTS to all its students. Erasmus mobility of teaching staff is
also acknowledged within the national academic advancement
procedure.
In the academic year 2011/2012, a group of students was
the first to realize Erasmus professional training abroad with
financial support awarded by Erasmus program through the National
Agency for Mobility and EU Programs Zagreb.

My ERASMUS experience - Graz, Austria
Each student studying in Europe has surely heard about
Erasmus student exchange program. Many would like to participate
in the Program, but are afraid to enter the process of administration
and mobility organization. In addition, many worry about financing
their stay in a foreign country and about adjusting themselves to
new living and working environment. However, these reasons for
not-to-go-away are just excuses to justify students fear of gaining
new experiences. I am saying so from my own experience, as I was
in the same situation! I want to send a message to all students
that in Erasmus mobility program there is nothing to be afraid of,
and wherever you go, you will be most welcome and appreciated, so
you will get in love with your new environment very quickly!

I have chosen Graz for my Erasmus placement host city. Graz

is the second largest city in Austria, located in its southern part. I
started searching for my placement through the Internet, sending
out about twenty e-mails per day, but getting back answers quite
scarcely. However, this was not demotivating, since it usually takes
quite a lot of time for getting right placement position. The most
effective way is to search the Internet for companies in your chosen

59

Academic Year 2013/2014
city to see if they offer some kind of jobs for students. It is also
important to send them your well-prepared letter of motivation. You
should be persistent, do not give up after you receive several
negative answers. It took me 4 months to get my placement
position. After you get it, everything else is much easier. I have
dealt with all procedure and documentation with my home Erasmus
coordinator, Ms. Sanja Kneevi.

Upon arrival in Graz, and after first days on placement, I

realized that all my fear was unnecessary. My colleagues on
placement were very nice and hospitable, so after a week there I
felt like I was at home. The building was located on the slopes of the
famous Schloberg - Castle on a hill, which with its 475 meters in
height dominates the city and overlooks it (the first photo). My
office in Graz was facing that hill, so I had a great view!

My placement was related to coordination of meetings for EU

sports projects in Austria. The meetings were held not only in

164

Austria, but also in neighboring countries (Slovakia, Slovenia,
Hungary, Germany and Croatia), so I was offered a wide
international experience within my travels to other countries and
gained many new acquaintances.

Although in the beginning I was reluctant about applying to

Erasmus program, now I can claim that my Erasmus placement was
the best decision in my life so far. If offered participation in Erasmus
again, I would not think a second about accepting it. My placement
abroad enabled me to fulfill obligations within my study program
and to meet new people, to learn about other cultures and nations.
Since my College has established cooperation with my host
company, my engagement there may continue after I graduate.
More about my plans and future prospects you can hear at our
Erasmus info days!
