Two exciting events form the backbone of the new issue of CA Magazine and explain the novelty of this seventh number. On the one hand, is
the great time and success we had in late June with FICARQ, the Fourth
International Festival of Film and Architecture - which this year took us
to Santander (where weve also made our second home). And, returning
to the present, we are thrilled to announce that DmeloaM Productions,
publisher of this magazine, will represent Spain with the VRPolis project
at the First Design Biennial at Somerset House in London. The idea for
the VRPolis project, which was born during FICARQ, has found its way out
of the film festival and onto the global stage at London with around 30
other participating countries. The presence in London of a project born
next to CA Magazine, along with an invitation from the Triennial Festival
of Design in Milan in September has led us to introduce a special bilingual edition of CA Magazine, in English and Spanish. A warm welcome
to our new readers from London and Milan, including our regular readers
in Spain - we hope that you find our articles enjoyable and useful as we
continue contributing our little grain of sand to this wonderful world of
Film and Architecture.

el futuro de las
ciudades al alcance de
todos sus habitantes
The future of our cities has concerned theorists for more than five hundred
years, but never before has technology offered citizens a close up of how
their streets, homes and neighbourhoods could look within a hundred years.
With this in mind and aware that virtual reality (VR) and 3D design are an ideal
technological ecosystem for a collaboration between architects and audiovisual
technicians, the Producer of DimeloAm, specialist in Film and Architecture and
Editor of this publication, has launched VRpolis: Diving into the future.
VRPolis, an idea which germinated at the International Festival of Film and
Architecture (FICARQ), has finally become a long-term project that aims to
bring innovation and sustainability to citizens in a practical and novel way. This
creative project reflects the future of medium sized cities whose demographic
absorption will undoubtedly be of great importance in medium and long-term
solutions to overcrowding in big cities and megalopolis. With the help of this
practical and immersive 3D tool the focus is on urban, sociological and cultural
development, harnessing new technologies to make improvements in the fields
of energy, mobility, connectivity, habitat, architecture, water and waste - without
affecting the livability or wellbeing of the people.

Charles douard an no se denominaba Le Corbusier
William Ritter on June 4. Adding to this, the Swiss architect Rene Chapallaz
also accused Jeanneret of stealing his idea for the project. Rene was six years
older than Jeanneret, with whom he had worked on their first homes from
1906 to 1908, the Fallet, Stotser and Jacquemet. He had also intervened at the
beginning of this work. The reaction from Chapallaz came after recognising
the failure of their facades design contest, which was declared null and void.
Chapallaz disliked not winning, being excluded from the work and verified
that the plans of Charles Edouard greatly resembled his previously made
plans.
This tangle of projects, authorship and disagreements was clarified at the
time by the American historian H. Allen Brooks, and more recently by Andres
Gomez Avila; not forgetting the apposite insights of William Curtis and Charles
Jencks as to the apparent influences on Jeannerets two Neoclassical
facades in relation to the works of Schinkel, Palladio, Sullivan, Ledoux and
even Giacomo della Porta. Apparently, Jeanneret had them present at the
Scala Cinema project.
Our interest focuses on two intertwined directions: the building system
used and the architectural type of the building. The result of both would be
publicly criticized and described by a journalist from the Swiss newspaper La
Sentinelle as a potato cellar among other niceties that appeared in review.
For this lightless box, as a precursor to his Boite a Miracles - Jeanneret had
designed a structure of five porches whose shape was very similar to that
used by Peter Behrens in 1908 for the Berlin AEG turbine factory, formally
and structurally linking brackets with an arched lintel. In both cases, grouping

The Vagabond, One A.M., The Count, The Pawnshop, Behind the screen;
S. J. Dawleys Snow White ... even the adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under
the Sea by Stuart Paton and that of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Berthelet.
American films were being released in rooms designed as modern theatres:
dozens were built in the US from 1913, although the American film industry
demanded a proper architectural solution. Meanwhile, old Europe was
virtually paralyzed, it was then the core of the fierce first World War, the Great
War (1914-1918).
However, in neutral Switzerland, at La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1916, Charles
Edouard Jeanneret, a young architect not yet 29, built one of the first buildings
in Europe exclusively dedicated to film screenings, the Scala cinema. The
situation was not easy - the Swiss had to protect themselves, being completely
surrounded by belligerent countries and during those years, troops were
being deployed along the border with France. Less than four kilometers from
where they were trying to contain the war, the work of the cinema was itself
another conflict.
The project was beset by problems arising from lack of money, delays, fines
and other unpleasantness, resulting in a real ordeal for the architect. Charles
Edouard - not yet known as Le Corbusier, did not hesitate to call his client a
hyena as these complications plagued him on a daily basis, culminating in
him confessing that at least one of the nights spent that summer they came
to blows... there are many nights I do not sleep he wrote to the writer artist

He ah La Scala!.

NEW TECHNOLOGIES
Aware that virtual reality (VR), 3D and innovation in the audiovisual
field are weaving an ideal technology ecosystem for collaboration between architects and filmmakers, in this Fourth Edition, FICARQ expanded its field to include the world of new technologies. The CasycCup of the Caja Cantabria Foundation hosted the program, which
showcased the conferences of Edgar Martin-Blas (NewHorizons) and
Jose Luis Navarro (InMediaStudio) and the large audience who came to
discover the virtual reality in the VR Hall experiences within CasycUp
media library. And one of the pioneering experiments launched by FICARQ in the section of new technologies was an interactive screening
of the film Back to the Future II. TouchVie, the company that developed the app which identifies the extra content of films and provides
that information in real time while the film is showing, was held in the
CASYC Auditorium: the first step: please turn on your phones. There
was a great deal of interest in John Bells work on the film (incorporated
in the extra content of the TouchVie app) - and at the meeting he held
for the public at the end of the film.

UTOPA 500
Alfonso Vegara durante su conferencia / Alfonso Vegara during his talk.
todava podemos identificar fcilmente.
When Thomas More wrote the word for the first time in his 1516 book,
utopia was no-place. Not in the contemporary sense of Marc Augs
non-places but rather in the Greek etymology devised by the Briton
(ou-topos) and in the idea that it was not about a real concept but
rather a grand fable (the island with an ideal society) in order to critique the problems of society. A few centuries later, the term evolved
to mean social and political transformation with the arrival of socialist
utopias: Saint Simon, Fourier and Owen. The twentieth century saw
the triumph and failure of some utopias which tried to introduce these changes (including communism, fascism, capitalism). In architecture,
some notable creators dreamed of other possible worlds, giving the
collective imagination a utopian aesthetic we can still easily identify.
There are some which stand out: the architecture of Antonio SantElia
and his Citt Nuova, nothing less than a Milan of the future conceived
in 1913-1914; the visions of Buckminster Fuller of living on spaceship
earth; the crazy projects from the Archigram group; the Japanese Metabolism movement. There is, we might say, an evolutionary line which
links these together, and which has left us some interesting architectural projects. Nonetheless, in the here and now it is worth asking ourselves whether, as some contend, architectural utopia is dead or whether
we can continue talking about utopia in contemporary architecture. The
next question would be what the digital revolution and new technologies have to do in all this. And finally, if the translation of all these movements to the cinema, with notable examples such as Blade Runner,
designed by Syd Mead, who we also interview in this special issue, has
been left without new icons or if it offers new possibilities. Jos Juan
Barma, Doctor of Architecture at ETSA in Madrid, director and founder of Metalocus magazine, responds to these questions in the article
which rounds off this special issue along with the discovery of a new
classic of 20th century utopian architecture, Gueorgui Krtikov, thanks
to the book, published in Spanish and English by Tenov.

New Technologies
activo y no solo receptivo.
Current new technologies are still very basic. They are obviously a
significant step forward in terms of understanding our environment
and the ways we relate to it compared to only 20 years ago. At that
time, for example, when we made a phone call it was always to a place. We would call and hope that someone was near the telephone and
would pick up and answer. Nowadays, when we make the same call,
we are calling that person directly and we generally dont know where
they are.
This basic example demonstrates the radical transformation that
new technologies represent conceptually, but progress of a revolution
in a radical change of how we understand each other and the context
we operate in have hardly changed. Imagine that after these same 20
years, a game like Pokemon Go has changed the role of the gamer
from that of a static to a dynamic actor. A situation which is still rather
basic, but which demonstrates how the creation of radically artificial
contexts is a long way from the future reality that many of us end up in
when we consider closed environments to develop 3D contexts.
The future and utopias involve a radical anthropisation of our reality, a radical situation like the appearance of a Pokemon hovering
in your kitchen. Everydayness as a tool for utopia. In this sense,
reality is hybridised with the utopia of a technology which has done
nothing more than take its first steps in the creation of contexts,
which we can hardly foresee at the moment, but everyone notes the
need to integrate the spectator as an active, rather than solely receptive element.

(1) Albert Einstein. 1952. Up to now, our concept of space has been associated with a box.
However it may be seen that the formative characteristics of the box-space are independent
of the thickness of the walls of said box. Accordingly, would it not be possible to reduce
this thickness to zero, without resulting in the loss of the space? This, in the limited case,
seems obvious: a boxless space, autonomous. This idea may be formulated drastically: if
one had to make the matter disappear, there would still be space and time, as an objectively
indivisible four-dimensional continuum. Accordingly, another idea is necessary: the point not
only located in time but also in space.

Chus Neira

But when Quintela was rewriting El Balcon, he was lucky enough to find himself
in a scriptwriting workshop with the theatre group La Fortaleza in Nuclear City.
Nestled in the Cuban province of Cienfuegos, this ghost neighbourhood was
created around the Central Electro-Nuclear Juragu. Backed by the Soviet Union, it
would be the most important project of the twentieth century in Cuba with twelve
engineering reactors throughout the island. Construction began in 1982 and was
never completed. In 1992, after the collapse of the communist bloc, work began to
dismantle the complex. In Nuclear City, Quintela found a ghost town, full of broken
dreams, one of the areas with the highest rate of suicide on the whole island. And,
he realized that El Balcon had to become The Project of the Century. Access to all
the audiovisual material generated by the project of the Central Electro-Nuclear is
respected in the film in its own format and colour, as opposed to the fiction, which
is shot in black and white - giving the film a very interesting hybrid character - it
cant be labelled a documentary or mockumentary. It could almost be given a new
category, a kind of nonfiction drama, where all the archived material, functions as
if it were rescued footage and is much more fictitious within the frame than the
footage of the fiction itself, which gets close to the documentary style.
The real wrapper Nuclear City and its collective failure offers, however, is the private
drama facing our protagonists, the three men and their pet fish, a dreamlike quality
and strangeness that lightens the drama and universal dialogue. In this successful
and difficult play between fiction and nonfiction that Quintela achieves with sobriety
and elegance, the harsh reality reduces the viewer to the Cuban political message
contained in the film - what could be summarised as the Revolution failure or the
Happy dreams failure, the broken, unpopulated, remains of a city, its slums and
tower block characters. A city lost. A whole civilization adrift.

London Reflects
A poetic, visual, semiotic game, with the city personified, reflecting on its
identity; what is expected or hoped for from it, challenging the subject to
question how it is and reflecting how it might be contemplated: with all its
grandeur and misery, beauty and imperfection, expressing at times, in a direct
way and other times, undressing in a more subtle or even veiled way, conditioned
by who sees and appreciates how: mirrors are unpredictable. Pascual and
Dampierre, following the rhythm of the poem: A reflection of Imperfection by
The Mandi Monster, introduce us to much more than the reflections of a big
city, they share their personal vision, emotional and delicate in its movements
and exquisite in its photography. Who are they seeing when they look at me?
In this first short feature film by French photographer Cline Billard, the main
protagonist is the Rialto building, designed by Obregon and Valenzuela Studio
in the centre of the city of Pereira in the sixties and decorated by the mosaics
of Lucy Tejeda. It displays the peak of the Colombian elite after the economic
crisis of the 1980s, the subsequent sale of the building, which fell into disrepair
and decay until its transformation into a large supermarket and finally today,
its vindication as an ideal space for creation and cultural research. Rather than
highlighting the unfortunate evolution of the building, the story emphasizes
the need for a commitment by the authorities towards the protection and
revitalization of contemporary Cultural Heritage, which is also in ruins, stripped
of its memory, without the ability to regenerate and meet the new needs of its
citizens as a result of corruption, neglect and scarcity.
Carbuncle Town
(Adam Barnett y Ann McCluskey, 70, 2016)
Since 2000, the publication Urban Realm Magazine has announced the socalled Carbuncle Award, an annual award for the ugliest city in Scotland.
Rather than interpreting this distinction as a humiliation or something shameful,
the intention is to highlight and disseminate these horrible constructions, to
become a stimulus for change for its inhabitants and the necessary pretext to
pressure local politicians towards a solution. Thus, in this documentary, various
socio-political issues are plotted and analysed in a very acute way, underlining
the huge gap between government (and trade) decisions and Community
proposals. Following the specific case of the city of Denny and the mobilization
by Siglo XXI group led by local activist Brian McCabe, we witness the long
struggle to win Dennys heart, to change the status and future of the city. An
amusing testimony of empowerment that, in the end, inspires both admiration
and enthusiasm, frustration and disappointment.

Ive spoken to dozens of professors and creators about Soviet avant-garde architecture. Most of them, when discussing the most important projects
of the twenties, refer to the Flying city of Krutikov [...] as an exceptional
creation . The eminent Russian researcher Selim Omarovich Jan-Magomedov proudly adds that half of his biographical work on the ill-fated Russian
architect was devoted to the city of the future, the original name that the
author had christened his project was a myth supposed lost until he found
the documents and could publish forty-five years later. Jan-Magomedov
went further and in 2008 published in Russian this analysis of the Krutikov
project and its subsequent trajectory. Llorenc Bonet had the good sense to
edit this in Spanish and English via the editorial Tenov.
The virtue of this book is the very necessary vindication of Krutikov and
his youthful dreams. The project of the Flying City and the subsequent
evolution of Krutikov draws the reader into the fascinating world of Russian Arts and Crafts Schools in the twenties, the legendary Vkhutemas, at
the height of Bauhaus, which the brightest minds in the recent history of
architecture have always cited as highly influential, along with the dramatic
destruction and shattered dreams of creativity and progress, that crashed
with the arrival of Stalinism. Krutikov succeeded in raising the bar, quite
literally to the skies when he proposed the sensational idea of raising a city
by suspending its buildings so the land could then be cultivated. His proposals caused a stir and controversy, and finally, he earns his living designing
projects like the building of the Moscow metro, within the constraints of a
new, flat plan and official post-constructivism style. Even with all his successes in this period, his widow reveals he wasnt happy with his creative
activity. The young man, fascinated with airships and space travel, the possibilities of mobile architecture and the contemporary debate of rethinking
urban density making rational use of the land and the elements we inhabit,
became an architect who, under the Stalin regime could only find support
for his faith in the progress of humankind.
He became deputy director of the Office of the State Inspectorate for the
Conservation of Architectural Heritage, and, causing envy, it seems, exerted his position with such zeal that he virtually denied adding his signature
to the demolition of any architectural monument. His bosses, tired of his
idealism left him a trap, admonished and finally fired him. Krutikov worried
himself to death, quite literally, while trying to gather documents proving
the injustice that had been done him.
And though he never achieved his goal; the studies and the books, like
this one by Jan-Magomedov, successfully manage to honour his inexhaustible curiosity and commitment to the progress of mankind, to a place and
name in the Architectural Hall of Fame that this worthy young student, who
dreamt of freeing the Earth with his buildings in the sky in 1928, so rightfully deserves.
