Resonance - Video 1

In this unit we'll be uncovering the power of resonance and the ways in which this
shapes our sound. We'll also be learning how to manipulate the ways in which
vocal tone resonates -- a technique that is integral to belting.
When you think of resonance, think of a guitar (or any musical instrument).
Why? Because then you can remember that the shape of a guitar produces a
very distinctive tone. A string vibrating on its own doesn't sound like much; but
when placed against an intricately and deliberately shaped piece of hollow wood,
it rings our beautifully. As humans, we are our own instrument. Where our sound
"hits" on our bodies changes the way it sounds. As a singer, your sound doesn't
just do what it wants willy-nilly; you have the ability to "aim" or manipulate the
resonance to create a versatile range of sounds.
First, let's talk about chest voice and head voice. These are your two singing
registers. Chest voice is your speaking range; head voice is higher and lighter,
and you can perceive a distinctive "break" or passaggio between the two. The
reason I'm bringing them up in this resonance unit is to explain the origin of this
chest/head terminology. And that origin is resonance.
Chest voice resonates, or vibrates off of, your chest. Whereas head voice
resonates off of your head! As you get higher, the placement of the sounds
resonates gradually moves up your body, from your chest, up to your chin, then
along your face, and eventually into your forehead -- and beyond! (Super high
soprano singing is best described as floating "above" your headbut we don't
have to worry about that in this course. That's just a fun singing fact.)
Watch and sing along with the video as I demonstrate the pathway of
resonance. As singing pitches get increasingly higher, they move up your
body. Place your hands on your chest, followed by chin, followed by face, and
feel the vibrations shifting. If you can't feel them right away, attempt to visualize
the sound as pinging off of these areas. Once you do, you'll understand firsthand
the nomenclature of head and chest voice.
In terms of resonance, sound moves vertically, kind of like an elevator shaft. The
purpose of this unit is to memorize the feeling of resonance and to be able to

manipulate it in subtle and meaningful ways. In the case of belting, belting


happens less in the back of your throat and more forward, in your face, or
mask.
Your mask is your "snout" area, near your nose, sinus, mustache area. It doesn't
completely shift the sound out of your elevator shaft; it just ushers it more
forward.
