Huskies Host Beavers For Homecoming
THE GAME: The Washington football team (6-0 overall, 3-0 Pac-12) plays host to Oregon State (2-4,
1-2) in the Huskies homecoming game this Saturday afternoon at Alaska Airlines Field at Husky
Stadium. The game, the UWs only home game in the month of October, kicks off at 3:30 p.m. PT
and airs on Pac-12 Network. The Huskies enter the game riding a nine-game win streak and are
ranked No. 5 in both the Associated Press top 25 and the USA Today coaches poll. Following the
Oregon State game, the Dawgs play back-to-back road games at Utah and California.
QUICK SLANTS: The Huskies current nine-game winning streak is tied with Western Michigan
for second-longest in the nation ... UW leads the nation in completion percentage (.727), team pass
efficiency (208.37), fumble recoveries (12), sacks (4.0 per game), turnover margin (2.17 per game)
and are second in fewest interceptions (2) and both fewest turnovers (4) and most takeaways (17)
... UW is also third in scoring offense and seventh in scoring defense ... the Dawgs have yet to
allow a point after a turnover this season while theyve turned 17 takeaways into 66 points ... UWs
streak of scoring 40 points was broken in a 35-28 win at Arizona, but the Huskies have now topped
40 in eight of their last nine ... Jake Browning, who ranks No. 1 the FBS in pass efficiency (204.9)
entering this week, broke the school record with 6 TD passes at Oregon ... with 23 TD passes in
2016, hes already easily surpassed his 2015 total of 16 ... Browning ranks No. 2 in the nation in
touchdowns and No. 1 in completion percentage ... linebacker Keishawn Bierria leads the FBS
with five fumble recoveries this season, tying the UW record ... the Huskies had a kick return for a
touchdown (John Ross, 92 yds.) and a punt return for a TD (Dante Pettis, 68 yds.) in the win over
Rutgers ... only twice before in recorded history have the Huskies done that: 1940 vs. WSU (Ernie
Steele had an 87-yd. KOR and an 83-yd. PR) and 2001 vs. Idaho (Roc Alexander, 95-yd. KOR; Charles
Frederick, 87-yd. PR) ... Ross now has five scoring plays of 90 or more yards in his UW career four
kickoff returns and a 91-yard TD reception ... five true freshmen have played for the UW this season:
DB Myles Bryant, WR Aaron Fuller, OL Nick Harris, DB Taylor Rapp and LB Brandon Wellington.
TELEVISION: The UW-Oregon State game will air live to a national audience on Pac-12 Network
with Ted Robinson (play-by-play), Yogi Roth (color) and Cindy Brunson (sidelines) providing the
commentary.
RADIO: The Washington IMG College Network, with its flagship station KOMO AM-1000 and FM97.7, will carry the live broadcast of every football game on 17 Northwest radio stations. Longtime
play-by-play man Bob Rondeau and color analyst Damon Huard are joined by sideline reporter Elise
Woodward. The home broadcast of the game will also air on Sirius (145) and XM (197) satellite radio.

100 WINS: With the 2014 victory over Washington State in the Apple Cup,
UW head coach Chris Petersen reached his 100th career victory. At the time,
it put his record at 100-17, meaning that it took him 117 career games to reach
his 100th victory. Only four coaches in major college history did it faster:
Gil Dobie (North Dakota State, UW, Navy, Cornell): 108 games
George Woodruff (Penn): 109 games
Bud Wilkinson (Oklahoma): 111 games
Fielding Yost (Neb., Kansas, Stanford, San Jose St., Michigan): 114 games
Chris Petersen (Boise State, Washington): 117 games
Knute Rockne (Notre Dame): 117 games
Additionally, Petersens 117 games were fewer than any ACTIVE FBS coach
required to make it to 100 victories. Here were the top five, at the time:
Chris Petersen: 117 games
Urban Meyer: 118 games
Bob Stoops: 122 games
Gary Patterson: 128 games
Steve Spurrier: 129 games
PETERSEN THIRD ON LIST: The 2016 NCAA record book lists the top active
FBS coaches in terms of winning percentage (minimum five years at FBS) and
the Huskies own Chris Petersen is No. 3 on this list. Here are the top 10 FBS

nator Pete Kwiatkowski was on Petersens staff in Boise in all eight seasons
as head coach, including the last four as coordinator. Kwiatkowksi, a BSU
Hall-of-Fame defensive lineman, also worked at his alma mater from 1988 to
1996. Associate head coach and offensive line coach Chris Strausser spent
12 of the last 13 seasons prior to UW coaching in Boise (he coached at Colorado in 2006), meaning he was with Petersen seven of eight seasons at BSU.
Running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Keith Bhonapha was also
on Petersens Broncos staff during Petersens entire eight seasons, though
he started as director of operations. He coached running backs his last five
years at BSU. Assistant head coach, special teams coordinator and linebackers coach Bob Gregory came to Washington having spent the previous four
seasons at Boise State. He was the defensive coordinator at California from
2002 to 2009 and, along with also having coached at Boise State in 2001, has
also worked in the conference at Oregon. Former Oregon State quarterback
Jonathan Smith, who turned in several top-class performances vs. the Huskies during his playing days, was quarterbacks coach at Boise State for Petersens last two seasons. Previously an offensive coordinator at Montana, he
continued in that role (along with QBs) at Washington. Defensive backs coach
Jimmy Lake, who spent the 2004 season in the same position at Washington
under head coach Keith Gilbertson, was Petersens DBs coach in Boise the
last two years there, having spent five seasons in the NFL before that. Lake
added co-defensive coordinator to his title this offseason. Tight ends coach
Jordan Paopao is entering his fourth season in that role, having worked as a
Husky GA the previous two. The two newcomers to the Washington staff are
not entirely new. UW alum Ikaika Malloe, who lettered as a Husky from 1993
to 1996, once worked as a graduate assistant at his alma mater. He joined the
staff after last season, coming to Seattle from Utah State. New wide receivers coach Bush Hamden was an offensive quality control assistant for the
Huskies in 2015. A former Boise State quarterback, he worked at Davidson,
Arkansas State, Florida, Sacramento State, Maryland and Colorado before
moving to Montlake. Three of Washingtons four graduate assistant coaches
are in their second season: former Boise State receiver Kirby Moore, former
Stanford defensive back Terrence Brown and former Kansas State linebacker
Hansen Sekona. The newcomer is former North Carolina offensive lineman
Kyle Jolly.
THE YOUNG AND THE OLD: Washington was one of the countrys youngest teams in 2015, as the UW roster included 52 freshman (both true and
redshirt freshmen) and 24 sophomores, as compared to just 13 seniors. Not
surprisingly, the Huskies returned a great deal of experience in 2016. In fact,
not counting specialists (kickers, punters, long snappers, returners), a total of
33 different Huskies have started at least one game in a Washington uniform,
18 on offense and 15 on defense. However, the 2016 roster still includes just
13 seniors to go along with 41 freshmen and redshirt freshmen, as well as 28
sophomores.

HUSKIES vs. BEAVERS HISTORY: Washington holds a 62-34-4 record in the

all-time series against Oregon State, having won the 20 of the last 28 meetings
and 30 of the last 39, dating back to 1975. The series against the Beavers is
the second-longest (to Stanford) active series in Washington football history
in terms of years and third-longest in terms of total meetings (to Oregon and
Washington State). The teams first met on Dec. 4, 1897, with Oregon State
earning a 16-0 home win. That game was Washingtons second-ever against
a major college. The next OSU-UW game didnt come until 1902, a 16-6 UW
win. Last year in Corvallis, the Huskies won 52-7 as Jake Browning threw four

goal from Travis Coons with one minute, 20 seconds remaining. In 2011 at OSU,
the Beavers upset the UW with a 38-21 victory. In 2010 in Seattle, Washington
won 35-34 in two overtimes, denying a two-point conversion for the winning
play. Jake Locker tied a then-school record with five TD passes, including four
to Jermaine Kearse. In 2009 at OSU, the Beavers got 159 rushing yards from
Jacquizz Rodgers to roll to a 48-21 win over the Huskies. In 2008 in Seattle,
James Rodgers rushed for 110 yards on only three carries and Lyle Moevao
was 18-for-22 for 191 yards to lead OSU past the UW, 34-13. The 2007 game in
Corvallis was memorable for an injury to Locker, controversial calls from referees
and five Alexis Serna field goals in a 29-23 Beavers win. In 2006 in Seattle, QB
Isaiah Stanbacks college career came to an end with a devastating foot injury
and the Huskies lost, 27-17. In 2005, the Beavers got six field goals from Serna
in an 18-10 win over Washington. In 2004 at Husky Stadium, OSU picked up
its second win in four seasons against the UW with a 29-14 win, the Beavers
first at Husky Stadium since 1985. Serna kicked a then-school-record five field
goals to provide the winning margin. In 2003 in Corvallis, Charles Frederick
piled up a school-record 371 all-purpose yards, scoring three touchdowns, as
the Huskies cruised to a 38-17 win. The Beavers next-most recent win (prior
to 2004) in the series came in Corvallis on Nov. 10, 2001, when the Beavers
broke a 13-game losing streak to the Huskies. That day, an unranked OSU team
trounced No. 8 Washington, 49-24, the first Beaver win (home or away) since
the 1985 Husky Stadium game. Several other recent meetings have come down
to the wire. In 2000, Ryan Cesca missed a game-tying field goal in the closing
seconds as the Huskies held on for a 33-30 win. In 1998, the Beavers went for
a two-point conversion with no time left. The pass attempt was batted down
by Husky safety Nigel Burton and the Huskies won, 35-34.
DAWGS AND THE NORTHWEST: Washingtons most-played rivalries are
against the other three other northwest Pac-12 schools. The Huskies have faced
Washington State 108 times, Oregon in 109 games and Oregon State on 100
occasions. Washington owns the advantage in all three series. The Huskies
lead the Ducks 59-45-5, Washington State 70-32-6 and Oregon State 62-34-4.
Combined, Washington has a 191-111-15 (.626) record against its northwest
rivals. Washington has played all three of the Northwest teams in a season
on 87 prior occasions. Over those 87 seasons in which Oregon, OSU and WSU
were all on the UW schedule, the Dawgs have swept all three 28 times. In
the meantime, the Huskies have lost to all three in the same season on only
seven occasions.
THE DEFENSE: Washingtons defense was the strongest it has been in years
in 2015, leaving a standard for this season that will be a challenge to match.
Last year, the Husky defense finished first in the Pac-12 in scoring defense,
allowing just 247 points, or 18.8 per game, the best average by the UW since
1996 (18.4 per game). The Huskies gave up 103 fewer points in 2015 than in
2014 (though, the UW played one more game in 2014). The Dawgs also led
the conference in total defense (351.8 yards per game), opponent first downs
(19.1 per game) and red-zone defense (79.5 percent). In the red zone, UW
opponents managed just 17 touchdowns in 39 attempts (43.6 percent), best
in the conference.
THE OFFENSE: Washingtons offense finished last season on a high. Over
the three-game win streak that wrapped up the 2015 campaign, the Huskies
posted 52, 45 and 44 points, an average of 47.0 per game. Over the last four
games of the season, the Huskies amassed 2,052 yards of total offense, or an
average of 513.0 yards per game. Over the final three (Oregon State, Washington
State, Southern Miss), the Huskies racked up 807 rushing yards (269.0 per
game) and completed 55-of-75 passes (.733) for 698 yards, four touchdowns
and just one interception.

RECORD COLLECTION: The Huskies have broken or tied a few school records
over this early season. The UW scored 40 points or more in six straight games
(dating back to the 2015 Oregon State game). Never before had they scored
40 in more than four straight (1944). Against Rutgers, John Ross fourth career
kickoff return for a touchdown broke Jim Kriegs old mark of three while Dante
Pettis tied Beno Bryants career punt return TD record of four. Against Idaho,
the Huskies tied the school record for passing touchdowns (6; tied record set
vs. UCLA in 1970) and Jake Browning tied the Husky record for individual
passing TDs in a game, with five (shared with Keith Price, 2012 vs. Colorado;
Jake Locker, 2010 vs. Oregon State; and Chris Rowland, 1973 vs. California).
Browning broke that record with six TD passes at Oregon, taking sole possession
of the mark. He also rushed for two TDs, giving him eight total, also a school
record. Additionally in that 70-21 Oregon win, the UW set modern (post-1945)
records for points, touchdowns (10) and PATs (10) while linebacker Keishawn
Bierria tied the Husky record for single-season fumble recoveries with his fifth.
THE PAC-12: Prior to the 2011 season, the Pac-10 Conference added Utah
and Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along with California is one of two schools who have been in the conference since its founding in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other three Northwest
schools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and California. Under current
plans, each school will play all five division rivals, plus four of six teams in the
other division each season. The first two seasons, the Huskies did not face
UCLA or Arizona State. In 2013 and 14, the Huskies didnt face Utah or USC.
Last year and in 2016, neither UCLA nor Colorado are on the UW schedule.
THE 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 202-65-3
(.754) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. The Huskies were
5-4 in such games in 2015 and are 3-0 this year.
HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go handin-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game
104 times. The Huskies record stands at 87-16-1 (.841) in those contests.
Since 1995, UW is 62-13-1 (.822) when rushing for 200 yards.
HUSKY STADIUM RENOVATION: Husky Stadium underwent a major renovation over from Nov., 2011, through Aug., 2013, as the entire lower bowl and
south upper deck were demolished and replaced. The new facility features a
new, state-of-the-art football operations center (weight room, training room,
locker room, meeting rooms, coaches offices) in the west end, much more
premium seating options and a new playing surface. Husky Stadium had featured a track up until 2011, so seats that were once far from the field, particularly in the west end, are much closer to the action. UW is 19-7 at home since
the re-opening of Husky Stadium.
ALASKA AIRLINES FIELD AT HUSKY STADIUM: The Oregon game on
Nov. 5, 2011, marked the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renovations that have now been completed. The Huskies re-opened their home field
with a 38-6 win over then-No. 19 Boise State on Aug. 31, 2013. The 2016
season marks the 96th season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction
on the facility was completed in 1920 when Washington played one game
in the new campus facility. UWs all-time record in Husky Stadium stands at
375-176-21 (.674).

HUSKY HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2016

This weekend, a new class will enter the Husky Hall of Fame. The class of 2016: Olin
Kreutz (football, 1995-97), Sara Pickering (softball, 1994-97), Nate Robinson (basketball,
2003-05; football 2002), Bob Rondeau (radio announcer, 1978-present), Sanja Tomasevic
(volleyball, 2002-05), Brad Walker (track & field, 2002-05), Mary Whipple (rowing, 19992002), 1984 Washington football team - winners of the 1985 Orange Bowl.
