Purpose:
This assignment will enhance the research skills, analytical ability, logical thinking of students, which
will empower our future managers in crucial areas of MIS which are necessary to gain a niche over
other business competitors in each sector by utilizing the facilities of new age information technology.
Learning Objectives:
1. This assignment is aimed at providing students with information and knowledge of applied
aspects of MIS.
2. To describe students how information systems integrate and support enterprise wide business
processes.
3. To make students identify and understand the cross-functional concepts, and how they can
provide significant business value to a company.
Instructions:
Assignment should be in RDIAS folder on A-4 size sheet in typed form with times new roman
style and font for heading should be 16, for subheading 14, and for normal text 12 with 1.5 line
spacing. Unformatted or poorly formatted documents will be penalized
Students have to submit the soft copy of the assignment on portal along with plagiarism report for
the same. If the plagiarism report shows that more than 40% content is copied from internet, the
assignment will not to be accepted.
Students have to submit hard copy along with plagiarism report to the respective faculty.
While submitting the hard copy of Research Assignment to the faculty they need to sign on the
submission list available with the faculty.

Q. 1 The Finance Manager of a local company wishes to develop his own spread sheet based Decision
Support System (DSS) that will help determine the financial feasibility of any potential project the
organization is considering. Discuss the benefits and potential problems that might arise as a result of
the DSS being developed by the Finance Manager.

Q. 2 A firm of solicitors wishes to develop a knowledge-based system for use by its customers.
Competing firms of solicitors only provide telephone or face-to-face advice. The solicitors would be
responsible for entering the knowledge data and for answering any queries beyond the scope of the
new knowledge-based system. The firm broadly agrees with this approach but is concerned that its
reputation could suffer if the knowledge-based system gave the wrong advice. As an independent
consultant brought in to advise the firm of solicitors.
a. Describe knowledge-based systems and explain how such systems could be
implemented.
b. Explain how the knowledge-based system should be tested.

Q. 3 A transport and logistics company has decided that it no longer requires a Head Office and its
strategic aim is to become a virtual organization.
a. Discuss the various MIS technologies that could be used to create a virtual
organization.

b. The companys auditors have concerns that information held by the virtual
company would lack security. List and describe FIVE measures that could be
adopted to ensure this information remains secure.
