was, as we all know, not supposed to happen
Thirty years. Over 30 years, Ive been taking pictures of artists on tour. There were
years, I photographed some 250 concerts
- spending more time in airplanes than others in bed. This exhibition is a kind of resum to the der von factor.
Pop star. I regularly asked if I am a pop
star in my very own profession. Or want to
be one. Better not. Im glad Im not a pop
star. Certainly some parts are appealing, so
the money and all the women and stuff. Can
also go up in the pants - and you will be like
Dieter Bohlen. Better not.
nenzulernen, denn sie haben schon zu wenig Zeit fr die eigenen Freunde. Deren Job
ist es nmlich auf die Bhne zu gehen, oder
tolle Songs zu schreiben. Oder gut zu singen. Manchmal auch alles zusammen.
Meine Ausstellung. Deshalb habe ich meine Fotos gar nicht so danach ausgesucht,
in den Augen der anderen die besten zu
sein. Jedes dieser Bilder hat eine Geschichte. Manchmal gibt es so viele, dass mich
darin verlieren knnte, sie alle zu erzhlen.
Nun gehe ich zum ersten Mal mit meinen
Geschichten auf Tournee. Zwei Jahre lang,
so habe ich mir vorgenommen, gehe ich
raus, und treffe Menschen wie Sie, die sich
an meinen Fotos erfreuen.

2004, after years of separation, the Reunion Tour of Wet Wet Wet - was a tour that
I was personally looking forward to with
all my heart (I had already been a huge
fan since Angel Eyes in the 80s)
Since Glasgow was the homecoming
show I knew this one would be very special.
It took me as a complete surprise when
Marti Pellow asked me on stage during Goodnight Girl to the cheers of
10,000 fans with the comment we have
our photographer here tonight and I want
to have my picture taken with you, is that
alright? to capture this special moment
with the fans in the picture.
Only much later did I learn that the show
was recorded Instant Live for a double
live album and so my personal stage appearance is kept not only in the images
but also on the live album :-)
Nach jahrelanger Trennung 2004 die Reunion Tour von Wet Wet Wet - eine Tour,
die ich gerne und mit ganzem Herzen
begleitet habe, denn ich war bereits seit
Angel eyes Ende der 80er groer Fan
dieser Band.
Ich wusste, dass Glasgow - die home
coming show - eine ganz besondere
werden wrde.
Fr mich vllig berraschend holte mich
Marti Pellow whrend Goodnight girl unter dem Jubel von 10.000 Fans auf die
Bhne mit dem Kommentar we have our
photographer here tonight and I want to
have my picture taken with you, is that allright?, um diesen ganz besonderen Moment mit den Fans im Bild festzuhalten.
Erst viel spter habe ich erfahren, dass an
diesem Abend auch das Live-Album Instant live aufgenommen wurde, und so
mein kleiner Auftritt fr immer nicht nur im
Bild, sondern auch auf CD fest gehalten
ist :-)

DJ Bobo, National Hero of Switzerland,
often mocked about, which is, to my opinion, a great injustice. Few artists spend
so much time and effort in the construction of their show, with such attention to
even the smallest detail. I photograph
Ren (so his real name I use when talking to him) for many many years - and
each time it is a real blast to me. I can not
stress enough that he sure delivers firstclass family entertainment,
For years, both photographically and
musically (!), the show is a true feast. I
will never be forget that Ren leaving the
tapes at home and went for a real band,
asking the audience to partcipate: to request a song that he and the band would
play live. But it could not be any DJ Bobo
tune. Being the swine that I am, I asked
for Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Other highlights included Thunder by AC / DC: sold-out at the Cologne
Arena Ren brought a true remarkable
version of his own, with the crowd of
16000, or Abbas Take a Chance on Me
(you remember the chorus line? Then you
sure know why this was an absolute highlight ;-)

The challenge was to bring out stage
and fans alike, while Malcolm was visibly swingin the bell. The very last shot
of me being up there... since I burned by
a** in the cage I was in: no one had told
the pyro guy I was hung up in a cage in
the left wing.
Die Aufgabe war, die Bhne und das Publikum zusammen zu fotografieren, whrend Malcolm am Glockenseil hing.
Der allerletzte Schuss fr mich aus dem
Kfig.... weil mein A**** brannte. Niemand
hatte dem Pyro-Mann gesagt, dass ich da
oben hnge - und so war der Spa dann
fr mich auch mit Glockenschlag zuende
- die Pyros gingen rund um mich los, und
ich ab :-)

One of my all time favorites - see the
sweat running down the guitar. I also
have the image which has Angus in
the center of the image - and has not
half of the energy of the image here.
Eins von all meinen Lieblingsbildernsieh den Schweiss, wie er an der Gitarre runter luft. Ich hab das gleiche
Bild, in dem Angus in der Mitte des
Bildes steht. Es hat nicht halb so viel
Energie wie dieses Bild hier.

On shots like this, all I can recommend is try. I tried nine shots - overand underexposing by 1/2 stops. I
believe this is underexposed by 1,5
stops.

neun Fotos gemacht- ber- und unterbelichtet um jeweils 1/2 stops. Ich
glaube, dieses ist um 1,5 Blenden

Drummers are always hard to shoot,
especially in stadiums or large arenas
where the stage is high and the pit
narrow. I went as much as I could to
the side of the pit and got this with the
300mm.
I recall it took quite some time, since
Tico had to move the head up for me
to get the full face well, almost ;-)
Schlagzeuger sind generell schwierig zu fotografieren, besonders in
Stadien oder in groen Arenen, wo
die Bhne hoch und der Graben
schmal ist. Ich bin so weit ich konnte
zur Seite im Graben gegangen und
habe dieses Bild mit dem 300mm
gemacht.
Ich erinnere mich, dass es eine Weile gedauert hat, bis Tico den Kopf
gehoben hat, damit ich das ganze
Gesicht fotografieren konnte naja,
fast ;-)

I love shooting in mostly seated UK venues, which leave me the option to whether
to shoot from the pit or the aisles, which
I often prefer.
I love this particular shot because of its
history. Ronan introduced the cowboy
hat when being in Boyzone in the shows.
Going solo, the stage crew brought up a
huge box onto the stage containing said
cowboy had. Ronan took the hat did the
Boyzone songs and the hat went back
into the box. Everyone knew there would
be no more Boyzone songs coming that
show.

This too is a night Ill never forget, surrounded by ex-teenagers who all looked
around the motto what on Earth am I
doing here?
Then: the boys ran on the front of the
stage - and all mutated back: a screaming crowd - as if there had never been a
break - and if none of them grew a single
day older.
Auch dies eine Nacht, die ich nie vergessen werde umgeben von ex-Teenagern,
die sich alle umsahen nach dem Motto
was mache ich eigenlich hier.
Dann liefen die Jungs an den vorderen
Bhnenrand und alle mutierten zurck
zu einer kreischenden Menge als htte
es nie eine Pause gegeben und wre
man keinen Tag lter geworden.

An endless day in the middle of - well almost - nowwhere. Leaving Germany in the
wee hours in the morning, fly to Stansted,
shoot through run throughs. This was the
starter of the show, and luckily I had more
than once chances to figure out the lighting.
Ein endlos langer Tag in der Mitte von immer - nirgendwo. Deutschland verlassen in den frhen Morgenstunden, Flug
nach Stansted, Probedurchlufe fotografiert. Das hier war der Anfang der Show
und glcklicherweise hatte ich erneut die
Chance die Lichtsituation auszuchecken.

Photographically an easy job. Unfortunately, I personally am not as happy
with the image, as I could be. I miscalculated the amount of film required,
as I only learned that afternoon that
there would be both a full rehearsal
and, of course, the show that night.
Result: I ran out of my beloved Fuji
professional 800 and I had to shoot
on material I was not at all happy with
afterwards...

Fotografisch gesehen ein leichter
Job. Leider bin ich selbst mit dem
Foto nicht so glcklich, wie ich sein
konnte. Ich hatte zu wenig Filme mit,
denn ich habe erst am Nachmittag erfahren, dass wir sowohl eine
komplette Probe als auch die Show
fahren wrden. Ergebnis: mir ging
mein geliebter FUJI 800 professional
aus - und ich musste auf Material
schiessen, mit dem ich nachher gar
nicht glcklich war.

I metered on the forehead and underexposed two stops to create this
sunset-esque like effect. I had to step
back, otherwise the red sun would
have disappeared behind the head.
Die Belichtungsmessung erfolgte
auf der Stirn. Anschlieend habe ich
gezielt zwei Blenden unterbelichtet,
um den Sonnenuntergang-Effekt zu
erzielen. Zudem musste ich mich tief
in die Barrier verkriechen, sonst wre
die rote Sonne hinter dem Kopf verschwunden.

Howard is one of the first artists, I
toured with for FansUNITED. In the
past years, I most likely have shot
more than 100 shows - and it was always a blast.
The reason why I like this particular
one is that each and every Howard
fan will recognise him from a 1000
images.
Howard ist einer der ersten Knstler,
dem ich fr FansUNITED als Tourneefotograf begleitet habe. In den letzten
zwanzig Jahren habe ich mehr als
100 Shows fotografiert - und es war
immer unglaublich.

asked most who it is. Between the
two images of Sarah Connor in this
exhibition lie just a few minutes and thus show that not only musical
but also the visual diversity of this
talented artist.
Immer wieder spannend, wie viele
Menschen mich fragen, wer das
ist auf diesem Foto. Zwischen den
beiden sarah Connor Bildern dieser
Ausstellung liegen nur wenige Minuten - und zeigen somit die nicht
nur musikalische sondern auch die
optische Vielfalt dieser begabten
Knstlerin.

The tour of Germanys singer Xavier
Naidoo is one I really fought for to be on
though I was warned again and again
how difficult this wonderful artist is at
least when it cames to photography. To
make sure we would not run into a nightmare, both management and lawyer refused to sign my contract before the first
show. I shot the first show, worked all
night on the images with Viola (my assistant at that time) and presented the
elaborate prints at the Concord hotel
to manager and the lawyer in the morning. All good: I landed the job. In fact,
the collaboration with Xavier was an
extremely comfortable one and I have
the greatest respect, how he leads his
whole entourage with personal care in
every detail.

The Corrs: What an incredibly talented (and beautiful!) family. Too bad,
one has not heard anything lately. I
was introduced to the band on the
Rolling Stones U.S. tour, when their
joint agent John Giddings arranged
for the Corrs to play on their U.S. tour
as support act.
At the time of this picture, however,
the Corrs long since were headlining
all over the world.
The Corrs: was eine unglaublich talentierte (und gut aussehende!) Familie.
Zu schade, dass man lange nichts
gehrt hat. Ich hatte meinen Einstieg
bei der Band durch die Rolling Stones,
denn durch den gemeinsamen Agenten John Giddings spielten die Corrs
bei deren US Tour im Vorprogramm.
Zum Zeitpunkt dieses Bildes jedoch
waren die Corrs lngst selbst Headliner auf der ganzen Welt.

and as a special guest of NSync, who
just made it big in the U.S. by and then
with her very own #1 debut album.
From my time with Modern Talking I
know only too well what else goes on
at such a young person, so she has my
full sympathy.

The stage construction made it impossible to get Christoph from the pit. So
I made myself comfortable at the mixing desk, shooting most of the show
with my beloved 300mm, with a 2x
converter bringing it to 600mm.

down a bit with the crowd - a real
joy with 390mm ;-)
And then a light from the back
straight into your lens, what a beautiful way to f*** up your shot - if you
are on automatic, which luckily I
was not.

This tour went over a year. I was
booked from the first German show
in Berlin, and this was the third show
for me. It is not that you can calculate on Sting to jump on a particular
part of the show, so I watched his
movements very closely to get this
one right. I am very proud that this
is one of Stings favorite live shots.
It was also the cover for a box set, a
poster, and, of course, the live video
from The Soul Cages Tour.
In 1992, this image got me nominated as Music Photographer Of
The Year. Later, 2009/2010 this picture came to completely new honor
as it was featured in Tim Mantoanis
exhibition Behind Photographs
- showing 200 of the most relevant
photographers worldwide.

I underexposed by one stop to make
this work. I always suggest to people
to shoot series rather than loose an
important part of the show.
I am not much of a friend of digital
displays. So be courteous and step to
the side on get your head down and
do not block others working while
checking our your images.
Loaded mit hellen weiem Licht
hrt sich leicht an. Wahr, aber
nicht mit den weien Klamotten. Ich
musste hier unterbelichten damit es
hinhaut. Ich rate anderen Fotografen
immer Serie zu schieen, bevor man
wichtige Teile der Show verpasst. Ich
bin kein groer Freund von digitalen
Displays. Also sei professionel und
geh einen Schritt zur Seite, zieh deinen Kopf ein und behindere die anderen nicht beim Arbeiten whrend
du deine Bilder checkst.

Actually, at this point, I should show
you completely different picture .The
tour was marked by the Soccer World
Cup in Germany. Day after day we James, band, crew and us - watched
the games on the jumbo screens of
the stage. Particularly exciting for
us Germans was to see how we were
treated by the foreign media presenters. In fact, they were celebrating - except Holland - almost without
exception.
Therefore James songs such as
High and Youre beautiful forever connect us with the 2006 World
Cup in Germany.
Eigentlich msste man an dieser
Stelle ein vllig anderes Bild zeigen.
Die Tour war geprgt von der Fuball WM in Deutschland. Tag fr Tag
gucken wir eintrchtig die Spiele auf
den Jumbo-Screens der Bhne.
Besonders spannend war es fr uns

Another one of my older goodies. Personally, it was a particular highlight
to me to tour with the Scorpions - having been a die-hard fan since their very
start. Alex Gernand, chief editor of Germanys #1 music magazine BRAVO, once
said that to the Scorpions every tour was
also a question of pride. No one in the
nineties had more lights in the rig, more
motors to move the rig ... It was and is
always a fest to photograph the boys and we got good buddies over the years.
Of course I have with their farewell
tour running while I write these lines a
certain sadness in my heart. However: it
makes sense to go when youre still on
the top. I hereby thank Klaus, Matthias
and, of course, Rudolf for the great years
Scorpions kick ass!

Ein weiteres meiner alten Goodies. Natrlich war es fr mich ein besonderes
Highlight, mit den Scorpions touren zu
drfen, immerhin hatte ich schon als Jugendlicher die Pflicht-Platte Tokyo Tapes
im Plattenschrank. Alex Gernand, Chefredakteur der BRAVO, hat mal gesagt,
dass die Show bei den Scorpions eine
Frage der Ehre sei. Niemand hatte in den
Neunzigern mehr Licht, mehr Motoren,
damit sich die Traversen bewegen, ...
es war und ist immer ein Fest, die Jungs
zu fotografieren - und auch menschlich
ist es jedes Mal eine Freude, sie zu treffen. Natrlich habe ich - gerade luft die
Abschiedstour - eine gewisse Wehmut
im Herzen, aber: es macht Sinn, dann
zu gehen, wenn es am schnsten ist.
So bleibt alles immer in bester Erinnerung. Hiermit danke ich Klaus, Matthias
und natrlich Rudolf fr die tollen Jahre
- Scorpions kick ass!

Elton - eins meiner ersten groen Cover. Die Show war zweigeteilt, erst Elton mit Brille und flashigem Outfit, so
wie man ihn frher kannte und liebte
- dann der Orchesterteil, in dem Elton
in diesem Outfit auftrat
Problem: Elton war krank und musste sich unmittelbar nach den finalen
Nchten einer Operation unterziehen.
Ich hatte 2-3 Minuten fr die Session.
Wie Sie sehen, haben wir mit diesem
Motiv ziemlich rumgespielt - und so
hat Hardy Rube den Hintergrund auf
einen Print ge-air-brushed und wir
haben den dann gescannt. Sicher
wrde man das heute ganz anders
machen, aber: warum jetzt ndern?
So haben das halt 1986 gemacht.

helps on stadium show, giving me a 120300mm zoom from the 70-200.

Nach dem intimen Venue der musikalischen Problem in der Schweiz war es
natrlich ein Riesen-Spa in diese Messehalle zu kommen, wo die volle Open Air
Bhne aufgebaut war.
Dieses Foto ist in einer der letzten Proben
entstanden - und neben meiner Frau und
unserem Hund waren vielleicht noch 50
Menschen in dieser gigantischen Halle und Genesis spielten nur fr uns :-)

Turkey but unknown to the world then.
He took the show - and is one of the

my than me meeting Thomas Anders,
who happens to be now my very best
friend for more than 30 years now.
Here is a picture from the reunion
night of Modern Talking: For the first
time really live, on a big stage, and
truly united. We all know that this unity was short-lived - but the show was
so special that I will never forget.

For this show I almost lost my drivers license. On the trip to Munich, the rental
car I used broke down. Thankfully, I got
get a new car immediately at Nuremberg
airport, but vaulable time was lost. To
make up I raced towards Munich disregarding the 155 zone around Nrnburg
massively -with an estimated average of
100mph - until I got stopped by the police.
They had filmed me as I had overlooked
a total of eleven (!) traffic sings. But God
must be a Hard Rocker: the police officer
was a die-hard Maiden fan, so I ended up
with a moderate fine only :-)

I wanted to create this vintage feel in the image, which due to the VariLights, which sure add
to the image, did not really work. At least this
explains why I chose this particular film for the
shot. In addition to the Partridge Family, The
Beatles were the ones that I adored most as a
child. The two bands are the only ones of which
I have all records both on vinyl and on CD. Nevertheless, working with/ for Paul McCartney
turned out to be one of the few more or less disappointing tours of my career. Maybe there were
just too many of this overly important people
surrounding him.
Ich wollte dieses vintage feel im Bild, was natrlich durch die VariLights, die es in den 60ern ja
nicht gab, nicht wirklich klappt - deshalb die besondere Filmauswahl bei der Aufnahme.
Die Beatles waren neben der Partridge Family
die Band, die ich als Kind am meisten verehrt
habe. Die beiden Bands sind die einzigen, von
denen ich alle Platten auf Vinyl und auf CD habe.
Trotzdem gehrte die Zusammenarbeit mit Paul
McCartney zu den eher enttuschenden meiner
Karriere. Vielleicht liegts auch einfach an diesen
unglaublich vielen wichtigen Menschen, die um
ihn rumwuseln.

I love this photo of the ex-Manowar
drummer Rhino (which I believe now
plays with Manowar again and in HolyHell). This was my first session with
this incredible band - in a tiny church
in upstate New York.
What a nice coincidence that the
churchs clerk himself was a huge
metal fan - and so there was nothing
in the way for this session.

glaube ich wieder bei Manowar und
HolyHell spielt). Dies war meine erste Session mit dieser unglaublichen
Band - in einer einsamen winzig kleinen Kirche im nrdlichen New York.
Ich war vllig von den Socken, dass
der Kster selbst ein Riesen-MetallFan war - und so der Session nichts
im Weg stand.

Die Verwaltung und das Editing der Bilder
erfolgte mit Adobe Lightroom 3 und FileMaker 11. Die gesamte Bildbearbeitung
und die Gestaltung dieses Katalogs erfolgte
mit Adobes CD5. Und was htten wir blo
ohne hardwarekalibierte EIZO Monitore gemacht...
