Design for Worldview

SEE WHAT YOURE MISSING.

How many triangles do you see?

There are ZERO triangles.

Our brain fills in lines where it wants to see triangles.

Our brains play tricks on us.

We make snap judgments about the world around us.
These snap judgments are the result of unconscious bias.

Why do our brains do this?

Our brains can only process so much information at once.
These shortcuts evolved to help keep us alive.

A Bat and a ball

A bat and a ball cost $1.10. The bat is $1 more than the ball.
How much is the ball?

The bat is $1.25.

The ball is $0.05. The bat is $1.05.
Total is $1.10.

We all have unconscious bias.

We all have unconscious bias.
Its natural, and it can help as much as it can hurt.

What can we DO about it?

Talk of unconscious bias gets us all down, because it can make us feel helpless.
But we can do something.

Raise your hand if

you think you are creative.

Turn to the person next to you.

Sketch your partner in 10 seconds.

Belief in your creative capacity lies at

the heart of innovation.
Tom & David Kelley, Creative Confidence

Creativity is the key that unlocks a problem.

Groundbreaking solutions to gnarly problems like those that
result from unconscious bias require creative thinking.

We are all creative.

We all have unconscious bias.
We are also all creative beings.

Its time to think like designers

Designers use design thinking to create great products.
We can also use it to create more inclusive cultures.

Because we have a design challenge.

How might we use our natural creativity to
interrupt our unconscious bias before it
leads to negative outcomes?

Take A Leap

experience from the perspective of _____(noun)_____.

Test an Action
My partner could ____(verb)____ to learn more
about this new perspective.

Make The Commitment

Take the sticky note you receive, photograph it with your phone
and make it the background of your lock screen.

What did we just do?

We used our creativity to move from uninformed assumptions through empathy to
develop a more informed view of someone else and act on that view.

Was this Design Thinking?

Yes. We used elements of the process with a focus on
empathy and the testing of assumptions.

Will this stop my unconscious bias?

No. We cant and shouldnt stop unconscious bias, but this should help you
become more aware of it and to identify & communicate your assumptions.
