5349. 10 Blk. Monarch 2396 [B-72]. LA SONNAMBULA: Ah! non giunge (Bellini). 1903 piano acc.
recording. Seems to play at 85 rpm in the correct key. Considering her easy high Fs, I dont
think she would have transposed it down. Mme. Helena couldnt have been kinder to yours truly
when he was a very young collector. I should repay her by being generous in my compliments to her
recordings. However, I have to describe this particular record as being sung in some strange Italian
dialect and the execution (word chosen wisely) of it being more an attempt to break speed records
than create a musical interpretation. Youll enjoy it, but perhaps not as an artistic document.

BAPTIST HOFFMANN [b]. Garitz, Germany, 1864-1937. A student of Julius Stockhausen in
Frankfurt, Hoffmann made his debut in Graz, 1888, then appeared in Cologne, Hamburg and finally the
Berlin Hofoper (1897-1919). He participated in several world premieres as well as the first Berlin
performances of Strausss Salome (in which he sang Jochanaan, a role he repeated in London in 1910),
Puccinis Madama Butterfly (Sharpless) and Strausss Der Rosenkavalier (Faninal). His repertoire was wide,
but he was particularly recognized in Wagnerian and Strauss roles. He later taught in Berlin.

HEDY IRACEMA-BRGELMANN [s]. Brazil, 1881-Karlsruhe, 1941. Born of German parents,
Iracema (her stage name, an anagram of America) studied with Max von Schillings at the Cologne
Conservatory and made her debut as a concert singer. Her operatic entry was in Stuttgart, 1910, as
Elisabeth in Tannhauser. In 1913 she made guest appearances at Covent Garden as the Marschallin in
Strauss's Rosenkavalier. From 1920-26, she sang with the Karlsruhe Opera. Her records are seldom seen.

LEWIS JAMES [t]. While James had a substantial career in oratorio and church work, it was through his
recordings of popular ballads and in ensembles such as The Revelers (with tenor James Melton) that he is
perhaps best remembered. In later years he was associated with the administrative staff of radio station WGN
in Chicago. There are few discs to recall his days as a soloist in such works as Beethovens 9th Symphony,
Hndels Messiah, and the Verdi Requiem, which was broadcast live (or radiated, being a more ominous
description in vogue at the time) from Lewisohn Stadium in 1925 with James as tenor soloist.
MAIKKI JRNEFELT [s]. 1871-1929. First wed to conductor/composer Armas Jrnefelt and then
pianist/composer Selim Palmgren, Maikki Jrnefelt was one of Finlands leading sopranos, both in opera but
primarily in concert. She appeared internationally, including the U.S. where her second husband taught at
the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, from 1921 to 1926.

MARIA JERITZA
MARIA JAVOR [s]. Near Budapest, 1889-Honolulu, 1976. A graduate of the Budapest Musical
Academy, Javor made her debut at the Budapest Opera in 1913 as Gilda in Rigoletto. The next year she
married tenor Alexander Varnay (1889-1924). Their daughter, Astrid Varnay (1918-2006), taught first by her
mother, became an internationally celebrated soprano. The family lived for a period in South America and
then New York, where her husband died. Two years later she married tenor Fortunato de Angelis. Both Javor
and De Angelis sang with smaller companies in the New York area and in 1937 were joined by daughter
Astrid in operatic performances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. By this time Javor was singing more
dramatic repertoire, such as Leonora in Il Trovatore. Javor subsequently taught, perhaps her most noted
pupil having been her daughter.

EDWARD JOHNSON [t]. Guelph, Canada,
1878-Guelph, 1959. Johnsons career began in
1899 in operetta. After considerable success in
this area, as well as in concert and oratorio,
Johnson was heard by Caruso in 1909, who
suggested that he study for opera in Italy.
Following Carusos advice, Johnson began
work with Vincenzo Lombardi in Florence. His
operatic debut was in Padua, 1912, as Giordanos
Andrea Chenier and he was La Scalas first
Parsifal, 1915, also premiering works of Pizzetti
and Alfano. Johnsons American opera debut was
with the Chicago Opera in 1919 as Loris in Giordanos Fedora. From 1923 through 1935 he
appeared at the Met in leading tenor roles ranging
from Pellas through Rhadames and then,
through 1950, served as the Mets General
Manager.

MARCEL JOURNET [bs] Grasse, 1868-Vittel, 1933. A February 5, 1910 issue of Musical America
indicated the importance of Journet to the Victor Company by describing his travel from Paris to Camden
just to make records, the most unique trip ever made by any singer. Despite it being the height of the Paris
Opra season, he was granted a special leave by the directors to come to America to fill an engagement with
the Victor company for the sole purpose of making records of concerted arias [sic] in conjunction with
Caruso, Geraldine Farrar and other famous artists. While the basso was here the company availed itself of
the opportunity to remake all [sic] of the old records of Journets solos. A few years later he made a similar
trip, but some special engagements were arranged with the Chicago Opera in conjunction with his recording
activities to make his trip even more lucrative. His career continued unabated until the year of his death.
Journets son, also Marcel Journet (1895-1973) and looking very much like his father, was an actor on both
the French stage and in American and French films.

OLIVE KLINE
OLIVE KLINE [s]. Amsterdam, NY, 1889-Lake George, NY, 1976. Studied at St. Agnes Girls School
in Albany and Troy Conservatory. Upon graduating she moved to New York and studied with Herbert Witherspoon. She also registered with a choir agency and was called to substitute for a pregnant Lucy Marsh at the
Madison Avenue Reformed Church. The tenor (Harry Macdonough?) asked her during service to make a test
for the Victor Company. It was successful and she was put under exclusive contract. Shortly after this she
was booked by the Wolfson Bureau. She toured frequently as an assisting artist to Chaliapin, SchumannHeink, Zimbalist, Amato and others and was a soloist with most of the major U.S. orchestras, singing under
the direction of Toscanini, Ormandy and Damrosch. While offered an opportunity to sing at the Met, she preferred church, concert and oratorio work. In a 1974 interview with Merritt Malvern, Kline stated that her
nickname was Ollie and that she smoked Parliament Cigarettes (something I cant quite picture her doing).

American career began in 1920 where he, Rosenblatt and Hirschmann reigned as three of the most important

being perhaps the highest-paid Chazan of all time.

during military service. After some engagements singing in zarzuela he made his official operatic debut in
Donizettis La Favorita in his native Barcelona, 1910. While mostly self-taught, he did spend a period later
that year studying in Italy with Ernesto Colli, making his Italian debut as the Duke in Rigoletto. During the
summer of 1911 he visited England primarily to record for the Gramophone Company. Lazaro described this
adventure in his autobiography, the following quotes as translated from Spanish in The Record Collector
magazine: I go to the plant, make the records and can hardly wait for my lovely voice to be reproduced
I listen to the records they are terrible. He felt that it was a conspiracy by the company, lest his records
outsell those of another tenor (i.e. Caruso) as the Gramophone Company has spent a great fortune in
promoting [that other tenors] records. Lazaro reasoned, therefore, that the company told the engineers to
make bad records of me, even though my voice is known as the most perfect tenor there is, that has been
and, according to the press, that will be for many years to come. It wasnt until 1916 that he resumed
recording, this time for Columbia, who referred to him as the wonder tenor and advised in their publicity
that he was obviously better than that other tenor as he could sing higher. Despite his contentious
disposition (as aptly put by John Steane in the Grove Opera Dictionary), Lazaro had a successful career that
included most of the worlds major opera houses and that lasted until the early 1950s. He created the
leading tenor roles in Mascagnis Il Piccolo Marat (Rome, 1921) and Giordanos La Cena delle Beffe
(La Scala, 1924). For the latter he sang the premiere but withdrew from further performances after
disagreements with the composer.

Lillie, daughter of Andrew J. Lillie of New York, a prominent Paris financier. In Paris, she moved in prominent social circles, at the same time studying voice. Though she hadnt intended to adopt a professional
career, she was heard at a private concert by Pedro Gailhard, Director of the Paris Opra, who immediately
engaged her. Her first appearance there was in 1903 as Constanze in the Opra premiere (well over a century
after the world premiere) of Mozarts Abduction from the Seraglio. One review mentions her debut as possibly
the most genuinely important of any for years. Her other roles included Marguerite (Faust), Eva (Meistersinger) Sidonie (Armide). After three years with the Paris Opra, Lindsay refused to extend her engagement
over a salary disagreement and she subsequently sang at Monte Carlo and filled occasional guest engagements (Brussels being one location). Exactly why she left Paris, likely late in 1910, is uncertain, although a
magazine article states that it was with the intention of coaching and teaching in Philadelphia. Shortly
after her arrival in that city, however, she lost all of her possessions in an apartment house fire. Two weeks
later (late January, 1911) a benefit concert was arranged at Witherspoon Hall, Lindsay being the featured
soloist, assisted by violinist Thaddeus Rich, and there being a long list of fashionable patronesses to
provide financial assistance. She gave another concert in Witherspoon Hall on December 21st, 1911, but
information as to her subsequent activities and whereabouts has so far reached a dead end.

GTA LJUNGBERG [s]. Sundsvall, 1893-near Stockholm, 1955. A student at the Royal Academy in
Stockholm with Mme. Cahier, Ljungberg also studied with Vanza in Milano and Oscar Daniel in Berlin. Her
debut was at the Stockholm Opera, 1918 and her career continued through the 1930s. Internationally, she
appeared in a wide variety of roles. For the Metropolitan Opera she created (in English) Lady Marigold in
Hansons Merry Mount, also singing there a number of other parts including Sieglinde, Salome and Tosca. In
Berlin, 1929, she was a great success in Benatzkys musical, Die drei Muskatiere, and also was on the roster
of the Berlin Staatsoper. At Covent Garden she was a sensational Salome and also created the title role in
Eugene Goossens Judith (1929). She was both vocally and visually among the more appealing artists of her
era.

GERMAINE LUBIN [s]. Paris, 1890-Paris, 1979.
Lubin studied with Flia Litvinne and coached Donna
Anna and Isolde with Lilli Lehmann and Elektra with Marie
Gutheil-Schoder. She was with the Paris Opra-Comique
from 1912 but came into her own as leading dramatic
soprano with the Paris Opra from 1924 through 1944.
There she was the principal Wagnerian soprano, but also
was active with other repertoire including contemporary
works. Her creations included leading roles in opera by
dIndy, Milhaud and Sauguet. While she wanted to sing at
the Met and Kirsten Flagstad had recommended her, the
War intervened. She was accused of collaborating with the
Nazis when Paris was liberated in 1944 and she was jailed
until being tried in 1946. While then acquitted as a result of
testimonials from many people she helped during the War,
she was still sentenced to dgradation nationale, confiscation of property, and a form of exile originally for life but
eventually shortened to five years. During this period she
lived with friends in Italy, returning to Paris in 1950. A few
concert performances followed, but she retired from the
stage altogether after her son committed suicide in 1953.
She subsequently taught privately, one of her most famous
pupils having been Rgine Crespin.

MacKenzie visited New York with a Hawaiian entertainment troupe (with whom he made one recording) and
by chance was auditioned by Columbia Records, who
signed him to a $500 per disc contract. He then
studied voice with William Thorner and began a concert
career. Despite success, he left America for Italy in
1928 to study for opera and was recommended by
Toscanini and Scandiani to study with Pintorno, who
turned his essentially light lyric tenor into a dramatic
instrument. During the 1929-30 season he appeared
successfully in France, Czechoslovakia and Germany and
returned to America in 1930. He was a guest on broadcasts, did small parts in a few films, toured in concert
(including a season in Japan) and with the San Carlo
Opera Company. Despite several good auditions, GattiCasazza would not accept him for the Metropolitan. In
the early 1940s he was finally offered a Met contract by
Edward Johnson, but MacKenzies wife (twenty-five years
his senior), who had caused numerous problems for him
in the past, told Johnson that the figure offered was
much too low and created a major scene, much to the
chagrin of MacKenzie. As a result, the dream of his life
TANDY MACKENZIE
wasnt to take place. It would seem a likely time for a
divorce, but he remained faithful to her until her death
in the early 1950s. He then remarried, this time
happily, to a woman about thirty years younger. Having spent his limited savings caring for his first wife
during her extended final illness, his income his last years was as a mail sorter at a Los Angeles post office.
He was killed in 1963 by a speeding teenager on the freeway while changing a tire en route home from work.

GEORGETTE LEBLANC MAETERLINCK [s]. Near Rouen, 1875-1941. Certainly one of the most
colorful personalities of her era, Leblanc was a long-time mistress of author Maurice Maeterlinck. Her debut
was at the Paris Opra in the premiere of Bruneaus LAttaque du Moulin, 1893. She added Maeterlincks
name to hers for reasons of propriety and publicity when first appearing in Boston in 1912, an addition she
included on and off until 1919, when Maeterlinck decided to marry a young girl whom they had taken
in some years earlier (shades of Woody Allen). Leblancs career varied from the theater through opera and
film, and she was particularly at home in soires devoted to song and recitation. She created roles in several
operas, including Ariane in Dukas Ariane et Barbe-Blue, based on the Maeterlinck play. Her only published
records were four sides for U.S. Columbia in 1912.

Marcel studied in Berlin and made her debut at the Paris Opra Comique in 1903 (singing there smaller
mezzo roles at the unlikely age of 16). Jean DeReszke, after attending one of her performances, took her as a
pupil. She reappeared as a dramatic soprano, singing the title role in the 1908 Vienna Hofoper premiere of
Strausss Elektra, replacing Anna von Mildenburg, who was originally assigned the part but considered it
impossible. It is likely that Marcel was actually born in 1885 as an article devoted to her wedding with
Weingartner in January, 1913 gives her age at the time as 28. She and Weingartner had a lengthy
romance, the wedding delayed as his second wife hadnt agreed to a divorce until November, 1912. Marcel
sang with the Boston Opera and in several German houses, usually in company with her husband. She died
in Vienna after a lengthy illness, her funeral attracting a huge crowd. Quoting a news article, During the
burial service, thousands of persons made a rush for the graveside, overturning monuments and creating
general disorder. Many were trampled upon and it was necessary to bring out the police reserves to establish
order. The Burgomeister was finally called upon to rebuke the crowd for its behavior.

FJOLA MARINE [s]. Born in Winnipeg, Canada, Marine studied in New York, with Cesare Sturiani and
then in Bologna with Giuseppe Sturani and Giuseppe Arigoni. The article giving this information states that
she is the only Icelandic soprano before the public today, so one imagines that she was born in Winnipeg of
Icelandic parents. She appeared in light opera in New York, Paris and London, and in grand opera as Tosca
in Bologna and Milano,.in Cavalleria Rusticana in Lugano, Switzerland and in Andrea Chenier in Genoa,
London, and New York. Houses for the performances werent stated, and it also mentions that her repertoire
in addition included Otello and Aida. In 1932, she appeared at the Cort Theater in New York in a song
recital, an accompanying photo in a NY Times article showing a very attractive woman. Supposedly Paolo
Civil, the tenor with whom she appears on the (apparently unissued) test pressing below, was smitten by her.

CRISTINA MARISTANY [s]. Portugal,1906 (?)-Brazil, 1966. Gifted with a very attractive lyric soprano
voice, Maristany left Portugal as a girl and spent most of her life in Brazil where she became noted as one of
that countrys leading exponents of Brazilian music. She was highly regarded, in particular, by composer
Heitor Villa-Lobos. One source indicates that she also studied in Russia. Her birth date is listed in various
sources as either 1906 or 1918, quite a difference. The recordings listed below have a mechanical copyright
date of 1938. She taught at the Brazilian Academy of Music. Her recordings were recommended to me by the
late Richard Bebb, a noted collector who greatly admired her discs (for good reason).

singer. In 1932 she toured Scandinavia and also gave lieder concerts in Berlin. The season of 1941-42, Markan appeared with the
Metropolitan Opera and also in the U.S. and Canada in concert.
Although she sang in several Met Sunday evening concerts, she
appeared in only one complete opera: as the Countess in Le Nozze
di Figaro, a role she had sung with success in Germany, Denmark
and Glyndebourne. Unfortunately, the NY Times reviewer found
that she was obviously too nervous to do herself full justice.
[Her] tones were consistently marred by a pronounced tremolo
and often wandered from pitch. She seems to have retired for a
period in the later War years, returning in 1957 to the operatic
stage for at least one appearance (as the First Lady in The Magic
Flute). She also taught.
Martin) studied originally as a composer with Edward MacDowell at Columbia University. Discovering that he
had a voice, he went to France where he studied with Jean de Reszke, Sbriglia and Lon Escalais and made
his debut as Gounods Faust in Nantes. He then made his debut in Odessa as Richard Martin (and appears
to have made unissued Fonotipia recordings under this name). Italian studies with Lombardi followed and a
first name change to Riccardo. His American debut was in
1907 with the touring San Carlo Opera. He was then hired by
the Metropolitan, where he created leading tenor roles in
Horatio Parkers Mona (1912) and Walter Damroschs Cyrano
(1913). His career continued through the 1920s, mostly in
touring companies. According to at least two reviews, he had
difficulties with acting. A 1914 NY Times commentary on his
only Met performance of Dick Johnson in La Fanciulla del
West states that his dramatic method is not such as
to make him so effective a representative of the bandit lover as
might be (whatever that might mean). Two years later he was
singled out in a NY Times summary of a Boston Opera production of Montemezzis Amore dei Tre Re given in New York.
The reviewer cited Mr. Martins participation as the weak
spot. The beautiful love scene in the second act was marred
by his unyielding vocal style and his manner of performing the
stage business. One wonders what he was or wasnt doing.

NELLIE MELBA [s]. Melbourne, 1861-Sydney, 1931. Many considered Melba the true vocal successor
to Adelina Patti. A star from her acclaimed debut in 1887 through over forty years of international triumphs,
Melba was noted for the purity of her voice and its remarkable silvery quality. Her finishing work with
Mathilde Marchesi provided an exceptional technique. Melbas personality was, as with a number of other
divas, bigger than life. When approached by young conductor Eugene Goossens, unexpectedly assigned a
Melba performance at the last minute, as to anything about her interpretation he should know in advance,
she replied, I shall sing the opera exactly as Gounod wrote it. I hope that youll conduct it the same way.
Others referred to her acting skills as consisting of quaint little gestures, but the voice had an ethereal
beauty that could not be duplicated. She was personally the epitome of efficiency and her brusque
directness could often create lasting impressions for better or worse. When introduced to
Rosa Ponselle at a luncheon arranged for the
two of them in London prior to the America
sopranos triumph at Covent Garden,
Ponselle (who bore Melba as her middle
name) remembered Dame Nellies stone-faced
introductory remarks: You must be the new
singer from New York. What sort of voice are
you supposed to have? Ponselle recalled that
she should have been forewarned by McCormack asking her upon her London arrival,
Have you met the bitch yet?, the word the
tenor consistently used in referring to his
Australian colleague. We certainly hear the
voice of an angel in many of her recordings,
although the owner may have at times
seemed to have come from the nether regions.

debut as a baritone in 1913, singing Silvio in Pagliacci. Despite success, he was advised by Mme. Charles
Cahier that his voice was certainly that of a tenor. After studies with Vilhelm Herold he made a second debut
in 1918 singing the title role in Tannhuser. After a period of study specifically in Wagnerian repertoire, he
had a great success at Covent Garden singing Siegmund and he was subsequently a regular there, as well as
at the Metropolitan, Bayreuth, Berlin and Hamburg. His outgoing and good natured personality was such
popular radio shows in the 1940s. During the same period he also appeared as a co-star in several Hollywood
films. While his Met career ended in 1950 after an argument with Rudolf Bing, Melchior continued singing
until shortly before his death.

REED MILLER [t] No. Carolina, Feb. 29, 1880-New York City, 1923. A cornetist as a youth, Miller
played first cornet of the First South Carolina Regiment during the Spanish American War. Working in
construction in 1900, he was heard singing by a voice teacher who advised he concentrate his entire future
on the development of his voice. Miller moved to New York in 1902 and soon gained a position as a church
soloist. Until the time of his death he was a
noted concert, oratorio and church singer. At
his death he was soloist of St. Thomass
Church. His sudden passing was the result of a
cerebral hemorrhage. Miller and his wife,
contralto Nevada van der Veer, conducted a
summer music school in Lake George, NY, from
1920 through 1923. A story told of his first
meeting with Caruso, around 1916, was
recalled at a eulogy for Miller:
Miller was walking along Seventh Avenue
and when he came near 57th Street, he
saw Caruso walking with his throat
specialist. The physician was acquainted
with Mr. Miller and introduced him to
Caruso. So, youre the Mr. Miller who
sings The Messiah, Caruso is said to
have declared. Let me hear how it goes.
Miller sang a few bars from the portion
Every valley shall be exhalted. I cant
do that, Caruso commented, when the
last note had died away, but I can do
this. And the great opera singer, disregarding the fact that he was on a public
thoroughfare, struck high C, holding it
as long as he could, and thereby pleasing
his physician, who was treating him for
throat trouble. "Ill let no church tenor
outdo me, was Carusos final word as he
raised his arm in adieu.

BARRY MORELL [t]. Manhasset, NY, 1927-Cape Cod, MA, 2003. A fine tenor I enjoyed hearing a
number of times at the Met. He was originally in the textile business but studied voice, first as a baritone and
then, through encouragement of Giuseppe Danise, as a tenor. The first years of his career were in the U.S.
in lighter lyric repertoire. He made his NYC Opera debut in 1955 as Pinkerton and entered the Met in 1958 in
the same role. The voice darkened, retaining its attractive quality, and he launched an international career,
singing in principal houses in England, Germany and Italy. His Met farewell in 1979 was again as Pinkerton.
He was still singing well but I suspect his steadily mounting weight and lack of theatrical skills didnt help
him, particularly as acting was becoming a word then heard more and more in operatic circles. His voice
was not huge but focused and very bright and, to my ears, it had a very appealing quality. The 1951 private
recordings below pre-date his commercial recording work by at least a decade.

LAMBERT MURPHY [t]. Springfield, MA, 1885Hancock, NH, 1954. A 1908 graduate of Harvard, Murphy
had begun his musical studies at the age of 16. He and his
brother, Ray, entered Harvard at the same time and were
accepted as members of the Varsity Quartet, along with bass
Leroy J. Snyder (who recorded for Victor in 1926 and studied in
Italy with Lombardi following his years at Harvard). Murphy
became a prominent church singer, first in Boston and then
New York. He was heard in a performance by tenor Riccardo
Martin who, in turn, urged the Mets General Manager GattiCasazza and conductor Toscanini to hear him. This resulted in
a contract with the Metropolitan Opera from 1911 through
1914. His roles were small, but were often singled out by
reviewers for praise. He was featured on a number of Sunday
night concerts, that of Feb. 23, 1913 including the Meistersinger
excerpt listed below, which he repeated March 1, 1914. Despite
laudatory reviews, he wasnt promoted to larger roles, so he left
the Met in favor of more lucrative concert work, his name
already prominent through his first Victor records. He was
active in concert and as a Victor recording artist into the 1930s.
He then taught in Boston at the Malkin Conservatory. When the
Conservatory closed (circa. 1942) Murphy gave group voice
classes in Springfield, supplementing his income by working at
an army war plant. During these later years, two tragedies
affected Murphys life. The first, in 1938, was the suicide of a
namesake nephew. A few years later, during the War, Murphy
was stricken with cancer of the larynx. While he survived the
surgery, he was unable to speak for the remainder of his life.

ALICE NIELSEN [s]. Nashville, 1876-New York, 1942. Having made her debut at the age of eight as
Nanki Poo in a juvenile Mikado company, Nielsen eventually became soloist at St. Patricks Cathedral in
Kansas City, directed by her first husband. From there she moved to San Francisco and appeared at the
Tivoli Theater and then with The Bostonians, appearing in de Kovens Robin Hood. Through recommendation
of his wife, Victor Herbert wrote The Fortune Teller for Alice Nielsen, following this with the less successful
The Singing Girl. Heard by Henry Russell in a London production of The Fortune Teller in 1902, he advised
Nielsen to study for opera in Italy. She did, for a year, and made a successful debut at the Naples Teatro
Bellini in 1903. She soon was welcomed at Covent Garden where she sang Zerlina in Don Giovanni, as well as
Mimi to the Rodolfo of Caruso and Gilda with Maurice Renaud as Rigoletto. Her American debut was with
Henry Russells touring San Carlo Company as Marie in The Daughter of the Regiment. With the Boston
Opera she created for America Lia in Debussys lEnfant Prodigue and Chonita in the world premiere of
Converses The Sacrifice. In 1919 she was offered the leading role in a revival of The Fortune Teller which she
had created 21 years earlier. The role went instead to Tessa Kosta as Nielsen explained, My husband would
not let me do it. Her final performance was in Bostons Symphony Hall in 1920, although she did some
recording work for Columbia in 1923. One interesting tale of her touring days took place in El Paso, Texas,
during a San Carlo performance of The Barber of Seville. Campanari was advertised as Figaro but did not
appear, while the opera was cut to eliminate all of the third act and much of the second. There were cries
of money back or give us the whole show led by the impresario of a rival company. Miss Nielsen left
the stage but was almost dragged back from her dressing room. She sang several selections in English amid
mingled hisses and applause. The audience was finally offered refunds. Miss Nielsen collapsed in her
dressing room and declared that she would never again play in El Paso. One of her husbands was a plastic
surgeon and during a press interview he was asked if he ever performed surgery on his wife. That is a
terrifically pointed question, replied the Doctor. I will answer it by saying that critics recently have said
that Miss Nielsen not only has regained her striking beauty, but has conquered youth itself, singing better
than she ever did and looking more beautiful than ever.

ELIZABETH PARKINA [s]. Kansas City, MO, 1882-Colorado Springs, CO, 1922. Parkina studied
in Paris with Marchesi at the advice of Nellie Melba, who heard her in 1896. Her debut was in 1902 at the
Paris Opra Comique as Lakm. It was as Musetta in La Boheme with Melba and Caruso that Parkina made
her Covent Garden debut. She toured Australia in 1905 with great success. Sometime in the 1907-08 period
she appears to have abandoned her career as a result of ill health. She resided in Europe until the beginning
of the World War in 1914, returning then to Kansas City. Her death, a result of pulmonary tuberculosis,
occurred in 1922 at a sanatorium in Colorado near the home of a brother.

SIGNE VON RAPPE [s]. Stockholm, 1879-Stockholm, 1974. Rappe studied at the Stockholm Royal
Conservatory and with Thekla Hofer in Stockholm (1899-1904) and then, at the instigation of Christine
Nilsson, with Therese Schnabel-Behr in Berlin (1904-05) and Etelka Gerster in Bologna (1905-06). Her
concert debut had been in Stockholm, 1902, in Hndels Samson. Her Stockholm Royal Opera debut was in
1906 as Pamina in The Magic Flute. This led to seasons in Mannheim (1906-08). She was heard there by
conductor Felix Weingartner as Strausss Salome and was given a four year contract with the Vienna
Hofoper. She subsequently chose to work as a guest artist and concert singer and not be restricted to any
one particular opera house. Her performances included, among many other roles, Salome under the
composers direction at the Berlin Hofoper. She also sang the same role in London, Copenhagen, Wiesbaden,
Cologne, Strassburg, Munich, and other important opera houses. She appeared in America in 1914 as the
chief soloist in the Swedish Saengerfest in Minneapolis, 1914. She was in private life the Baroness LumdenWeldn and the eldest daughter of the then Swedish Minister of War, General Field Marshal Baron von
Rappe. She made only three very rare recordings for the Gramophone Company in London, 1910.
