About SUPER/IMPOSITION
SUPER/IMPOSITION will be mentioned throughout this manual. SUPER/IMPOSITION is sold as a video accessory for
DAT/EM CAPTURE, or as a part of DAT/EMs SUMMIT EVOLUTION digital stereoplotter. SUPER/IMPOSITION sends
an image of digitized objects into the eye along with the usual photographic view given by the stereoplotter. On
analog and analytical stereoplotters, a special video monitor and optical system are added to the stereoplotter. On
digital stereoplotters, the additional graphics are added to the image view display.
Digitized objects and optional coordinate text appear superimposed onto the images. This makes it easy
to see digitizing progress and object accuracy.
SUPER/IMPOSITION is excellent for map revision. When the older file is superimposed over an area of
new construction, any new features are immediately obvious.
The stereoplotter can check graphical objects without turning away from the image view.

Auxiliary Input Mode on page 3-1
DAT/EM Coordinate Display Dialog Box on page 3-2
In addition to the DAT/EM CAPTURE commands described in Chapter 5, all of the MicroStation
commands are available for mapping purposes. A good working knowledge of MicroStation is valuable
for efficient mapping. However, the beginning MicroStation user will also be able use DAT/EM
CAPTURE. Read more about helpful MicroStation commands in:
Helpful MicroStation Commands on page 3-4
Using Level and Attributes to Separate Data on page 3-4
Always use a 3D design file with DAT/EM CAPTURE. If the file is an existing 2D design file,
convert it to 3D. Select 3D from the Export option on the File pull-down menu in MicroStation.
Step 2)
Move the stereoplotter position. If the cursor is not visible on the screen, use the datem fit
command to set the coordinates so that the cursor appears.
Step 3)
Visit a few control points and check the coordinates against the ground control listing. The
coordinates of the stereoplotter can be seen in the DAT/EM coordinate box.

When the snapz on command is used, the elevation is rounded to the nearest contour interval. The rounded elevation
is sent to MicroStation; any objects digitized with snapz on are given the rounded elevation, which is displayed under
the stereoplotters true elevation in the DAT/EM box. For information about the contour interval, see Datem
Settings on page 5-9. For information about snapz, see Snapz Family of Commands on page 5-23.
When snapz on is active, the
rounded elevation that is sent to
MicroStation is displayed under the
stereoplotters true elevation.
To add, remove, or change commands on the menu, see the instructions in Appendix A.
Placing Cells
Map symbols are drawn in using MicroStation cells. These cells may be placed using MicroStation by setting
ac=<cell name> and digitizing.
In order for MicroStation to find a cell, the appropriate cell library must be attached. This is accomplished with the
MicroStation attach library command or with other MicroStation cell utilities. DAT/EM supplies a starting cell
library called dat_em<version>.cel that can be customized or replaced if necessary. See Customizing the Cell
Library on page 4-2.
If the cells should take on the exact stereoplotter elevation, be sure that snapz is OFF before digitizing.
3-2 DAT/EM CAPTURE for use with MicroStation and SUMMIT EVOLUTION LITE EDITION
It is helpful if the user is familiar with the different kinds of MicroStation cells, consisting of graphic cells, point cells,
and shared cells. Also be familiar with the difference between line pattern cells and regular symbol cells. Please read

3-6 DAT/EM CAPTURE for use with MicroStation and SUMMIT EVOLUTION LITE EDITION
There are many ways to customize components of DAT/EM CAPTURE. This chapter gives an idea of the customizing
possibilities, as well as guidelines to follow. The following items are the most commonly customized:
DatemLite menu, see Customizing the DatemLite Pull-Down Menu on page 4-2 and Appendix A.
Mouse button definitions, see Customizing the Mouse Button Definitions on page 4-2 and Button
Manager on page 5-2.
Seed files that are modified versions of the DAT/EM-supplied seed file
It is strongly recommended to use the original dat_em<version>.dgn seed file for testing new installations. Once
everything is working properly, the seed file may be customized or a different 3D seed file may be used.
Do not use 2D seed files with DAT/EM CAPTURE. If an older 2D file must be used, first convert it to 3D using
MicroStations Export option from the File pull-down menu. For more information, see 2D, save as 3D in
MicroStations help file.
The dat_em<version>.dgn seed file is an ordinary 3D design file that has had a few changes to make digital mapping
easier. This saves the time required to make these changes every time a new design file is started.
dat_em<version>.dgn has the following settings:
No graphic elements are placed
The active z is 0
Boresight lock is on
Perform the following steps when customizing the DAT/EM-supplied seed file:
Step 1)
Step 2)
Step 3)
Make the desired changes according to the project specifications. Common things to set are the
view displays, text size, and active scale.
Step 4)
Enter the FILEDESIGN command or choose Save Settings from the MicroStation menus.
Step 5)
Set the new seed file name in the MicroStation Workspace (see Configure the Seed File and Cell
Library Variables on page 4-2).

Before modifying dat_em<version>.cel, make a copy under a different name. This prevents future
DAT/EM CAPTURE updates from writing over the custom file.
2.
Read the MicroStation Help about the different types of cells. Know the properties of graphic cells, point
cells, and shared cells.
This menu may be customized, and additional pull-down menus may be added if desired. For complete instructions
on editing the menu definition, see Appendix A.

DAT/EM CAPTURE for use with MicroStation and SUMMIT EVOLUTION LITE EDITION
These key-ins set the status of graphic cell placement to either relative or absolute. (The relative setting is
important when using cell placement commands to place graphic cells.)
If Relative is on, a graphic cell is placed on a level or levels relative to the Active Level. For example, consider a
graphic cell that was created with elements on levels 5, 7, and 8. If Relative is on and the Active Level is 1, the cell is
placed on levels 1, 3, and 4. If the Active Level is 45, the cell is placed on levels 45, 47, and 48.
If Relative is off, a graphic cell is placed on the same level(s) as it was created (absolute placement).
MicroStation offers a setting for Relative in the Place Active Cell dialog box:
However, MicroStation does not offer key-ins corresponding to this Relative setting. Because it is important to know
the status of the relative setting when using cell placement commands, DAT/EM CAPTURE offers the crelative
commands:

Datem Coords
Datem Coords
Purpose:
Datem coords activates the DAT/EM CAPTURE coordinate display. This display shows ground coordinates. It also
shows the rounded elevation when snapz on is active.
To display the dialog box, start the command:
datem coords
When the snapz on command is used, the elevation is rounded to the nearest contour interval. The rounded elevation
is sent to MicroStation; any objects digitized with snapz on are given the rounded elevation, which is displayed under
the stereoplotters true elevation in the DAT/EM box. For information about the contour interval, see Datem
Settings on page 5-9. For information about snapz, see Snapz Family of Commands on page 5-23.
When snapz on is active, the
rounded elevation that is sent to
MicroStation is displayed under the

5-4
DAT/EM CAPTURE for use with MicroStation and SUMMIT EVOLUTION LITE EDITION
Purpose:
To set the absolute display depth to dp=-9999,9999 in the view that had the most recently recorded point.
This command is especially helpful when a new design file is started. The new design file may not be set to show the
models Z depth, and since there are no elements in the file yet, a view fit doesn't produce the models Z depth either.
Datem depth sets the Z depth so that any elements that are about to be digitized can be displayed in Z.
The size of the XY and Z displays are controlled by different settings. Datem depth sets a large view depth, while
datem extents and datem fit control XY extents of the view.
To use datem depth, perform the following steps:
Step 1)
Datem depth works on the view that had the most recently recorded point. Choose a view that is to
be used with datem depth. If the most recently recorded point was not in that view, then activate
MicroStations Update View icon and click the mouse in that view. (Update View is suggested as
a method to place the most recently recorded point in the desired view without digitizing an
element.)
Step 2)
Step 3)
If desired, immediately click the mouse in any other views to run datem depth in those views also.
Datem depth produces the same results as if dp=-9999,9999 had been entered in the view that had the most recently
recorded point.

Datem Depth
Datem Depth
Datem Extents
Datem Extents
To zoom View 1 approximately around the model extents, then rotate the View 1 to the model's rotation angle.
Purpose:
This command is especially helpful when a new design file is started. The new design file may not show the model
coordinates in its view, and because there are no elements in the file yet, a view fit doesn't produce the model view
either. By using datem extents, the model view and model rotation are obtained before placing any elements in the
design file.
To use datem extents, perform the following steps:
Step 1)
Make sure orientation is done on the stereoplotter. The datem extents command must be able to
find the orientation file.
Step 2)
The view rotation is obtained from the model's orientation results. The rotation is the same angle used by the datem
rotate command.
The view rotation is only for convenience, and can be changed back at any time using the MicroStation view rotation
utilities.
5-6
DAT/EM CAPTURE for use with MicroStation and SUMMIT EVOLUTION LITE EDITION
Datem Fit
Datem Fit
Similar to MicroStations fit, but performs the fit in XY only; does not change the Z depth or the rotation.
Purpose:
This command combines aspects of both MicroStations fit and datem extents:
Fits View 1 around the (X,Y) coordinate range of the files elements.
DAT/EM CAPTURE for use with MicroStation and SUMMIT EVOLUTION LITE EDITION
5-7
Datem Rotate
Datem Rotate
Purpose:
To rotate the current view to the same rotation as the photographic model.
Datem rotate rotates the current view to the same rotation as the photographic model. After datem rotate is used,
the current view is rotated so cursor movement is in the same direction as stereoplotter movement. That is, if the
stereoplotter moves up on the XY plane, the cursor moves up on the screen, and if the stereoplotter moves right on the
XY plane, the cursor moves right on the screen. This command is useful when north is not straight up on the
photographic model.
To use, simply enter the command,
datem rotate
Datem rotate does not change MicroStation's active angle; it only affects the view rotation.
A similar command is datem extents, which not only rotates the view, but also zooms to the model extents.

DAT/EM CAPTURE for use with MicroStation and SUMMIT EVOLUTION LITE EDITION
Purpose:
To automatically pan the view as the auxiliary input (stereoplotter) digitizer's cursor moves out of the current
view. The stereoplotter's cursor is always displayed on the video screen.
It is often convenient to perform a transparent view pan. A transparent pan will not cancel or interfere with any other
active command. Whenever the stereoplotters cursor approaches the edge of the video screen, datpan sets a new
view window with the cursor in the center.

Mv Tentative
Mv Tentative
Purpose:
To move the analytical or digital stereoplotter to the (X,Y) or the (X,Y,Z) of a tentative point.
The mv tentative command moves the stereoplotter to the (X,Y) or the (X,Y,Z) of the currently active tentative point.
To make settings and use the tentative point move, perform the following steps:
Step 1)
Either use the tentative move family of commands and tentative family of commands, or activate
the datem settings dialog box and make selections:
datem settings
If Move stereoplotter to tentative is checked on,
supported stereoplotters move automatically to a
tentative point as soon as the tentative point is selected.
Note! If Move stereoplotter to tentative is checked
on, the mv tentative key-in command is not
necessary.
Key-ins for this option are tentative move off and
tentative move on.
Step 2)
Select a tentative point in the MicroStation design file. There are two possible results or actions,
depending on the setting for Move stereoplotter to tentative:
a.)
If Move stereoplotter to tentative is on in the DAT/EM Capture Settings box, then the
stereoplotter moves automatically to the new tentative point. The mv tentative command is not
necessary.
b.)
If Move stereoplotter to tentative is off in the DAT/EM Capture Settings box, then move the
stereoplotter to the tentative point by entering the mv tentative command:
mv tentative

Tentative move on causes the stereoplotter to automatically move to tentative points. tentative move off
turns off the tentative point move setting. These commands are the same as turning on and off the Move to
tentative option in the datem settings dialog box.
Description
Tentative move off turns off the tentative point move setting. This key-in
has the same effect as turning off the Move stereoplotter to tentative
option in the datem settings dialog box.
tentative move on
If tentative move on is used or Move stereoplotter to tentative is checked on, supported stereoplotters move
automatically to a tentative point as soon as the tentative point is selected.
The stereoplotter moves to the 2D (X,Y) location of the tentative point if the tentative on key-in was used or
Tentative to XY only is on in the datem settings box. It moves to the 3D (X,Y,Z) location of the tentative point if the
tentative off key-in was used or Tentative to XY only is off in the datem settings box.
To activate the tentative point moves, perform the following steps:
Step 1)
5-26
Make the desired setting for a 2D or 3D tentative point with the Move to XY only setting in the
datem settings box or by using the tentative on or tentative off key-in commands.

stereoplotters move automatically to a tentative point as soon as the
tentative point is selected with the stereoplotter.
Note! If Move stereoplotter to tentative is checked on, then entering
the mv tentative command is not necessary.
Key-ins for this option are tentative move off and tentative move on.
Step 3)
If the tentative move on key-in has been entered (or Move stereoplotter to tentative is on in the DAT/EM Capture
Settings box), then the stereoplotter moves automatically to the new tentative point.
Step 4)
To cancel tentative move on, either enter datem settings and check off the Move stereoplotter to
