Automatic ECG-Evaluation by means of signal pattern recognition

Working Group 8.42

ECG Signal Pattern Database

The basic tool of this method is a comprehensive ECG signal pattern database which should be validated as well as possible. For the results of
the analyses, the quality and the probability of the findings of the database ECGs are of decisive importance. The accuracy of the results of
pattern recognition altogether cannot be better than the accuracy of the findings contained in the database.
The number of reference ECGs in the database must largely reflect the biological spectrum of the cardiac diseases (e.g. as concerns the
distribution of age and sex). ECGs with rare cardiac diseases or combinations of these which are not contained in the database cannot be
selected and evaluated.
At present, the underlying database consists of approximately 24,000 digital ECG signals recorded with different electrocardiographs. From each
of these ECGs, one representative beat was selected, processed together with other technical information and stored in the ECG signal
database. Add to this the findings and the probabilities that this information is correct. For example, the information "possibly an old posterior
myocardial infarction" is assessed to be less significant than the information "acute posterior myocardial infarction."
