The 11th Month
The 11th Day
November 11, 2016
On October 18th this year, I observed the day fifty years ago that I swore to defend
the constitution of the United States and this nation from all enemies foreign and
domestic. It is hard to believe that it has been that long ago, but it is a fact, it was
long ago. It is also a fact that we were all indeed once young and in much better
shape than we are today. As I reflected on that day I remembered a number of other
young men that I served with both here in CONUS and in the Republic of South
Vietnam. I wondered what might have become of them and how their lives may have
turned out. As we approach this coming Veterans Day I hope that the memories that
creep back into your lives may bring a smile to your face as you recall the better
times from so far back. I hope also that you can plan to take part in some way to
honor all those who committed their young lives to the ideals that shaped our time in
uniform. I hope that you can see that our efforts were honorable and that those who
gave the ultimate sacrifice and their families are deserving of our respect this
Veterans Day, as are all of you who sacrificed by serving in our nations military. I
hope that you can take the time to join other chapter members by attending the
parade or attending another event to honor our service and the service of all that
served. It is an honor to be among all of you and I am proud to salute your service.
John Lavelle, chapter secretary.
